The Dilemma

[G102] Start!

The area was once green and wooded, however this portion of the island has since been logged through and the damage is plain to see. Large unkempt logs are scattered across the clear-cut area, caught amongst the endless stumps and what sparse foliage is available, which provides little cover. The area is silent, with little to no noise to be heard, creating an eerie sense of isolation.

Phew, glad that's over. Tobias thought to himself, pleased as punch with himself as the red headed boy got off the girl and stood up... and was startled to find out that the boy much bigger than he'd originally reckoned. The unknown fiery-haired giant stood almost a good head's length taller than him, and was built like a pure athlete. If it came down to a fist fight, Tobias was unsure that he could beat him. Even worse, it looked like the red-head knew it; he'd gotten off the girl, but deliberately stared Tobias down before almost dismissively 'allowing' him to make the next move.

"Hoooo kay, this can't be good. Toby, what have you gotten yourself in to?" he asked himself before taking a deep breath, his resolve somewhat wavering as he realized what he was doing. Here he was, pointing his gun at a fellow student who could likely kick his ass any other day of the week as if he was some sort of cowboy.

As a hunter, he'd been trained to handle firearms before. If there was one thing he'd been taught to do, it was to never, EVER, point the business end of a gun at someone unless you meant to use it. And right now, Tobias had no intention of shooting someone he'd never met with his arms raised in surrender, even if he had been attacking someone just moments before.

"All right," Tobias continued yelling at the boy, not wanting to get particularly close to the clearly stronger individual that stood before him. "That's good. We don't want any trouble here. I know we've all kinda had a bad day today, but that don't mean we should be turning on each other like a bunch of animals, right?" Just to show that he was on the up and up, and because he also really didn't want to shoot the guy, he began to lower his arms, slowly bringing his pistol down as if he'd just finished a clip at the firing range.

"So, I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. You go your way, and we'll go our way, and when we get back to school, we'll all just laugh at this here incident as if it never even happened. Sound good to you?" He asked the basketball player, somewhat regretting stumbling upon the fight in the first place.

God damn, he thought to himself as he waited for the guy's reply. Who knew doing the right thing would be so hard?

Janet stared at Tobias. He honestly believed somebody was going to come rescue them? Had he never seen the show before? How had he not come into contact with it in the three years it was running? She shook her head and stood, slinking out of the line of fire as surreptitiously as possible. Possibly, although unlikely, Robert would charge Tobias in the interest of taking his weapon instead. More likely, although still unlikely, would be Robert charging and Tobias shooting him. She had heard from her Uncle Charlie about how a vest only stopped the bullet from hitting the body and damaging organs, but force would still be transferred to the body. Presumably, Tobias would shoot him in the center of mass, which would at least slow Robert down slightly.

The most likely option was Robert and Tobias just facing off until one of them left. This was the option Janet liked the least. She knew that both of them would need to be eliminated eventually, but she would prefer not to get her hands dirty. That being said, she wasn't planning to stick around after whichever course of action took place. She primed herself to bolt. The hockey stick would slow her down slightly, especially once she hit the forest, but that hardly mattered.

Reconciled with the failure, Rob stared at the guy, waiting for the end of his monologue. He planned to just leave, as any more conversation would be pointless and risky for his body if the boy suddenly felt an urge to become a killer.

That's when the guy (who apparently was called Toby) suddenly went with a pure comedy gold about going back to school. Also, he lowered the gun. Normally, Rob wouldn't even think about doing anything tricky at this point. Too risky, and besides that, He was always more straightforward 'take the ball, put it in the basket' type of guy, rather than some sneaky liar and trickster, but this guy here was just asking himself to show him the truth hard way.

"Fuck, dude, are you for real?" Robert chuckled nervously and a smile came back on his lips, as he couldn't believe he really just heard those kinds of words from Toby. He even put the hands down, as the Norse wasn't pointing the gun at him anymore. "I don't know shit about how the three previous programs went, but I know that they were FINISHED. Nobody saved anyone. Thinking we will be saved by the cavalry at this point is just not smart."

Rob took a step forward, still in the surprisingly good mood, probably the result of sudden change of climate after adrenaline-buzzing scuffle with Janet.

"But, hey sure, I'll take your offer. I'm feeling much better without a bullet in my skull, thank you. So, let's shake our hands, go the other way, and we'll probably never see each other again. 'No harm done' as you put it..." Rob took a few careful steps forward (better safe than sorry), extended his right arm in the friendly handshake gesture, waiting for Tobias to respond.

"It's a bit of an useless information right now... But you're right, we should keep it civilized. I'm Rob."

"I don't know shit about how the three previous programs went, but I know that they were FINISHED. Nobody saved anyone. Thinking we will be saved by the cavalry at this point is just not smart."

Did he just say THREE previous programs? Like a TV show? Tobias thought to himself as Rob continued to talk to him. No, that just couldn't be possible. How could it be possible? Not for the first time in his life, never watching much TV besides wrestling was coming back to bite him in the ass. Nah, couldn't be. Who would even want to watch it?

However, doubt began to creep into his mind as Tobias began to wonder if what the redhead was saying was true. If this had happened three times before, and no one ever got saved, how could that even be possible? Could the American government really be so inept as to allow a terrorist group to get away with the same things four times in a row? Rob at least seemed pretty convinced about it at least. He'd have to ask what's-her-face over there and a few other people if he got the chance about it later.

"But, hey sure, I'll take your offer. I'm feeling much better without a bullet in my skull, thank you. So, let's shake our hands, go the other way, and we'll probably never see each other again. 'No harm done' as you put it..." Rob said as he warily approached Tobias, offering him his had as a peaceful gesture of solidarity.

For a brief moment, Tobias began to feel slightly more hopeful about the situation at hand. Maybe if everyone could be as civil as ol' Rob here, there was still hope for them yet on this island. He smiled and nodded as Rob apparently agreed with him. Without a second thought, Tobias shifted his gun into his left hand, holding it loosely by the end of the grip as he extending his right hand out to meet Rob's.

"I'm Tobias; Tobias Elwin. Glad to see we can all be civil-like here, Rob..."

Janet was... a little surprised that this was the course of action taken. Tobias seemed to be a more trusting fellow than she had anticipated. She knew that, even if she didn't know SOTF was real, she would be suspicious of somebody who was just accosting a supposedly defenseless female. Even if the guy was twice her size, the gun would be quite the force multiplier.

A part of her, a really big part of her, wanted to run. Run now, run fast, and get away before the temporary peace was broken. Get to the forest, set up an ambush or something. The only way to live was to play the game. And playing the game meant... killing her classmates. Unbidden, faces flashed in her mind. She... didn't have a lot of friends, but among them she counted Jay Holland, Alexander Campbell, and maybe even Hayley Kelly, although she wasn't sure about her boyfriend. He seemed like the sort of person who crushed beer cans against his forehead. The point was... she wasn't certain she would be able to just... kill them. Especially not Jay. She liked Jay.

Still, she ignored that part of her that said run for just a little longer. It would serve her purposes well if Robert did what she almost expected him to and tried to snatch the gun. Somebody would get shot, hopefully not Tobias. Guilt would probably drive him to run, which would give her a chance to loot Robert and take his vest. The vest was key to winning here, at least until she got a gun of her own. It evened the playing field that little bit that would give the ruthless and intelligent a better chance of survival. The Fittest isn't always the strongest. Sometimes the fittest happens to be the person who knows how best to use what she has.

(We're gonna improvise a bit here, but the result is already decided between me and Lawther, so all GMing and that stuff...)

Rob just couldn't believe in what he just saw. Tobias, who just witnessed Rob ATTACKING fellow student, believed him that everything's good and shiny now. But that wasn't a problem. Certainly not a problem for Rob. He almost heard TV speaker's screaming 'Jenkins with a golden opportunity for the steal!'.

"Thanks Tobias" Rob shook his hand firmly and smiled at him. "I think, I'll..." He paused for a while, looking for the correct words. "...Go hiding for know. You know, survival and all that stuff. But before I'll go, let me give you one last piece of advice about staying alive on this island..."

Robert took one last step toward Tobias, lowered his head a bit so he could speak directly in Toby's ear.

"Never. Trust..."

At this point, Robert delivered the most powerful blow to the stomach he could deal with his left fist.

...Anyone"

In an instant, Rob freed his right hand from the handshake and attempted to quickly snatch Tobias' gun with it.

For a brief moment, Tobias felt like things might just work out after all, what with Rob and him shaking hands like gentlemen. Tobias naively smiled as the taller boy began to impart his advice to him, before realizing all too late what kind of trouble he was in.

"Hrrgghhhhhh"

The unexpected punch to his stomach was devastating. Had he been ready for it, had he been expecting to fight, the blow certainly would still have hurt but it probably wouldn't have taken the wind out of Tobias' sails quite as easily. The barrel-chested boy's legs buckled as his grip on Rob's hand loosened, dropping him to his knees he gasped for air.

He tried to react quickly as Rob reached for his weapon, swinging his arm out in the hopes of keeping it out of his reach. If it had worked, he might have been able to reposition the gun in his hand and taken a shot at his opponent. However, Rob's reflexes were faster; before Tobias could register the blow, Rob's right hand was already inches away from the gun. Tobias' awkward swing of his arm was not enough to keep Rob's attempted grab from catching the edge of the pistol, knocking the gun out of his hand.

The M15 General Officers pistol flew out of Tobias' hand, flying a few inches away thanks to the momentum of his arm. Desperate to get a hold of the weapon, he lunged his body towards the pistol on the ground, his outstretched arm barely an inch away from the gun...

And that was her cue. Without even glancing back for a moment, Janet bolted for the forest in the distance. She didn't watch the outcome of the fight, nor did she care. She hoped somebody got shot, and the part of her that wanted to survive the most said that it hoped the one who got shot would be Robert instead of Tobias. If it was Robert who was shot, and he wasn't shot in the center of mass, the bullet proof vest would be a useful prize, if she could get back here and get it before someone else took it.

She glanced back only once, when she was cresting a hill a distance away. She could see them still scrabbling on the ground, probably for the gun. She slowed down slightly, pacing herself as she continued to the forest.

((Sorry for the absence. Busy weekend ^^))

Surprise attack was a success. As Rob predicted, even though Tobias looked like a guy who could put up a fight, he certainly wasn't the guy who could fight back after this kind of hit. Hardly anyone could anyway, but that wasn't Rob's fault that the Norse was naive enough to believe that Rob had no hostile intentions.

The bastard managed somehow to pull out the gun of Rob's reach though and eventually he dropped it to the ground several inches from them. Rob had to give some credits to Toby for being able to make an attempt to get it back while stile trying to catch a breath, but it was still more or less useless. Rob was in full strength (minus few minor bruises and one more stingy one on the stomach after fighting with Janet) and in standing position with full spectrum of possible moves.

Without giving the situation a second thought he went for the most obvious one - he decided to step with his foot on Toby's hand reaching out for the handgun. That should give him enough painful distractions, while Rob would try to reach for the gun himself.

((No worries mate))

As Tobias lay on the ground, his outstretched hand desperately close to the pistol, a shadow loomed over him. Robert Jenkins was quick to put an end to Tobias' desperation. Pain resonated throughout Tobias' hand as Rob crushed it beneath his heel, his cry of pain muffled by the dirt. He weakly clawed at Rob's leg with his free hand, trying with all of his might to free his other hand from below Rob's shoes.

It was too little to late. Tobias had no strength left in him after having been dropped by Rob's punch, and he had no heart left in him either. He felt foolish for having believed that everything could be right as rain, and for feeling overconfident just because he had a gun. A gun that was now in Rob's hands.

"No..." Tobias whispered to himself. This wasn't right. Nothing was right. He'd tried to help someone, for Christ's sake! He even forgave the man for his transgressions, just like his father would have done. And yet here he was, laying prone on the ground as the man he had forgiven stood tall. All because he had trusted him. Now his gun was in that man's hands, and Tobias could only wait with his face in the dirt as Rob stood victorious above him.

FINALLY!

Rob finally reached his goal. Better even, as he aimed for Janet's hockey stick, and now he had much powerful toy in his hand. Actually, considering the numbers of bruises and scratches (along with the new one coming from Tobias' fingers trying to dig into Rob's leg just a moment ago), the stick would be hardly a fair reward for his actions. But the gun...

Rob was a complete greenhorn in terms of shooting, and anyone with at least a sliver of knowledge about the topic (like say... Tobias for example) would immediately notice it. What Rob knew however, is that even pistols can have a dangerous recoil, so just to be on the safe side, he grabbed the gun with his both hands. Then he made a few steps back from Toby to be as far away as possible from any potential shenanigans from the wounded boy.

The redhead took a quick look around the area. Janet was nowhere to be found. Since she wasn't a problem anymore, he concentrated 100% of his attention back on Tobias.

"So, she ran away... I expected that to be honest. But, I don't need anything anymore from her, so I don't care."

Robert aimed the pistol at it's (previous) owner. As noticed before, he had no idea how to aim properly except from the tips he saw in several movies, but at this distance it wasn't a problem. Point a gun, pull the trigger, bam, person dead. If Toby will try to do anything stupid that is.

"Stand up, and put your hands up in the air, where I can see them".

Tobias cringed as he heard Rob call out to him, telling him to get up. That wasn't happening right now. He was still lying on the ground, gasping for air as he clenched his fists to relieve some of the pressure and pain that welled within him. His guts still hurt from the sucker punch that had been delivered to him mere moments before. Stupid, how could I have been so stupid...

However, Tobias knew that it was foolish to try to ignore the man with the gun that stood before him. After taking a few moments to catch his breath and let some of the pain subside, Tobias slowly began rise from the ground, panting on his hands and knees like a wounded bear. There was no guarantee that Rob wasn't going to kill him here and now. The only option left was one that most prey had when a predator came around: Abandon any belongings it could to save itself.

"Alright, alright. Don't shoot." Tobias said in between short breaths. He grimaced in pain as his abdominal muscles pulled his upper body up from the crawling position he was in. "There... There's a bag over yonder with the rest of the clips for that gun and all of my supplies. Just take it. I don't want no trouble anymore." He pointed towards the stump in the distance that held the SotF daypack and the backpack filled with his personal effects for the camping trip. He hoped that would be enough to appease Robert into leaving him alive.

Rob waited patiently as Tobias slowly stood up. He had time. He was in total control, and he really hoped most of his future encounters will look similar. As he waited, obvious question came to his mind: What next?

I don't know how many bullets has this clip, but certainly not much. I wonder if this guy has some more of it...

"Alright, alright. Don't shoot. There... There's a bag over yonder with the rest of the clips for that gun and all of my supplies. Just take it. I don't want no trouble anymore"

Oh... I guess that solves my problem...

"You're reading in my mind, dude." Rob replied with a small smirk on his face. Still concentrated on Toby, the redhead started his slow march toward Tobias' daypack. He didn't suspect much more from the guy, but you never know.

After a few seconds (which really felt like an hour), Robert reached the daypack with black 'B049' sign on it. In a manner which would probably made his eyes fly out of his orbits if repeated more often, he quickly shifted his look from daypack content to Tobias, to daypack, to Tobias until he counted everything inside the bag. Standard food and water rations, first aid kit, spare clips he was talking about and a gun manual which would be and interesting read in the near future for Rob, that's for sure.

At first, he just wanted to take the bag and go away. But then he stopped for a while and looked at Tobias once again. The Norse was his enemy, just as everyone else in the long shot, if Rob would really want to leave the island, but he was also his fellow student and normal human being. Toby had to die at some point, but... Leaving him die out of starvation and dehydration? No, that would be just wrong. Or rather, even more wrong than all the things he was prepared to do to win.

Finally he grabbed Toby's daypack, took the clips, manual as well as one tube of crackers and went back to hid it in his own bag of supplies. Then he threw the bag back in his owner's direction.

"There you go. At least you won't starve now. Get the fuck out of here, before I'll change my mind." Rob tried to say it with as cold tone of voice as possible, but he doubted the effect himself. He still had much to learn if he was supposed to play a ruthless killer one day.

As Tobias watched Rob slowly make his way towards his daypack, his pain slowly began to evolve into rage. It wasn't anger that was just limited to the fact that he'd just been sucker punched and laid out like a wimp. No, it was much more than that. He was angry at having been so careless in a dangerous situation. He was angry that the girl he just saved had simply run away when he could have used her help. He was angry at the terrorists that had forced himself and his classmates into becoming their own personal playthings. It was anger at the world. A righteous fury.

He stood there stewing in his own rage as Rob rooted through his day pack, reflecting on the words of wisdom he had imparted. Never. Trust. Anyone. No, Tobias was not about to trust anyone on this island ever again. From now on, the kiddie gloves were off. Clearly no one was willing to just live and let live on this island, if Rob's words and the girls actions were true. There were no laws keeping people at bay. Anyone could easily become a killer in this new world. If Tobias was able to live through this encounter, he wouldn't let anyone get the drop on him ever again.

Soon, Rob had found what he wanted and zipped up whatever remained in his day pack, completely ignoring the other bag filled with his personal effects on the ground behind the stump. As he began to head back towards Tobias, Toby prepared himself for round 2 with the athletic red head. He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, waiting for the moment Rob decided to try to end his life. If he was going to die, Tobias Elwin was ready to go down swinging.

Instead of coming in to finish the job, Rob tossed Tobias' day pack at him.

"There you go. At least you won't starve now. Get the fuck out of here, before I'll change my mind." He said coolly, keeping his distance like Tobias should have in the first place. He was being spared.

Tobias held his tongue from trying to make a snappy comeback like a fool. He'd already lost this round, and with Rob acting cautiously there was no way he would be able to launch an assault on him before he pulled the trigger. At this point, conceding the victory was the only option.

Tobias nodded his head begrudgingly in agreement as he cautiously began to step backwards away from Rob. He wasn't about to be shot in the back after all that had happened to him. His eyes bored into his assailant's skull with killing intent that was held at bay like a caged animal. Before long, he had backed up far enough that he felt confident Rob would probably miss if he took a shot. The way he held the gun was a dead giveaway of his inexperience.

"You best watch your back, Rob. Next time we meet, it's round 2, you fuckhead." he whispered to himself as he turned around, making haste towards the forest.

And in an instant it was over.

Robert stood alone watching as Tobias ran toward the forest line. Rob could swear the boy said something as he went away, but the redhead couldn't hear it. And even if he could hear that warning, that could be just as well some Tibetan mantra, because Rob didn't care anyway. He was alive with only minor injuries, and right now, he was probably one of the best equipped people on the island. Mission accomplished.

As Rob noticed, the day was slowly coming to an end. He didn't know much about the climate of the island he was on, and he didn't know how cold the night can be, so he decided to be on the safer side and find some closed space to rest. He took his map from the daypack and checked the location.

Okay, this is definitely a felled forest. But which one, north or south? He pondered for a while. Never mind, whatever the place, it's better to go south or east. Going toward the cliffs or swamp right now would be extremely stupid...

And so, the basketball player packed all of his things, except from gun he was still firmly holding in his right hand. He looked once again at the barren area and as soon as he was sure no one was observing him, he started walking away.

It's gonna be a long ride home, but at least now I'm prepared...
