Final Third Foul

Bodycheck - Phillip Ward, End of the line.

Those expecting quick and easy escape will find themselves out of luck when they find themselves at the docks. They are a long L-shaped series of sturdy wooden planks with multiple spaces for boats to park. The boards are often wet and slick during turbulent weather and one slip could send a student into the salty sea below.

Alex arrived shortly after Jennifer got there. The killer, Jimmy Brennan according to some other loudmouth idiot in the distance, was just as crazed as Alex was. Whatever, he and the others would be marked for death too. Alex would kill every damn one of them if they came between him and his prize.

Unfortunately, Brennan kept his filthy hands on it.

Who the hell is he, holding what should be mine? Little insignificant bug. That weapon should be mine.

Alex was unable to see that the 'weapon' as he believed it to be, was little more than a piece of driftwood. But to him it was a murder instrument of heavenly appearance.

Brendon, Brenman, whatever his stupid name was, was smacking himself with the branch for some reason or other. With every 'thwack' and 'thud' Alex glared at him even more intently. He eyed Brennan, yeah that was it, intently. Absolute loser that he was, he had no right to hold a weapon when Alex had none.

So what if he killed Phil? Phil was already injured. It wasn't his own work. It meant nothing. Alex failed to see the hypocrisy in those thoughts, seeing as how he went through the same thing.

But hypocrisy wasn't going to get in the way. Nothing would. Brennan would die one way or another, and Alex would pry his new toy from the little bastard's cold dead fingers.

So caught up in his thoughts, and the hallucinations of blood and death all around him, Alex was completely oblivious to the fact that Brennan had charged them. He was oblivious to the fact that Jennifer likewise had gone ahead as well.

Alex was lost in his own world.

But not completely.

A single thought entered his head.

You are going to die if you don't move NOW.

He had no idea where that thought came from. He didn't care either. With that one thought, fear entered him. The sleep deprivation and fatigue had kept him lost in his mind. But that thought broke the spell long enough for him to realize that standing around with two armed people in front and a possibly angry person immediately behind him was a bad idea.

A look of pure fright was upon his face, and he stumbled backwards trying to get away.

Move. Live another day. You can't play if you're dead.

Much as he wanted a weapon, so badly, so very badly, Alexander Seymour wanted to live long enough to get that weapon. And even a wimp like Jimmy was dangerous to him right now. So Alex skirted back in fright. He wasn't going to die. Not if he could help it.

Survive. Survival above all. I don't wanna die. I don't want to die. I DO NOT WANT TO DIE!

Marco was closing in on Alex and the two others. Jennifer had already reached Jimmy, Alex was nearly next to her and... someone had just screamed at Jimmy?

Marco glanced over towards the treeline as he ran and saw two more people arriving on the scene. He didn't know if that was a good or a bad thing; either they'd help them deal with Jimmy or they'd only end up as his next victims. He was dangerous, no doubt about that. He sounded like he'd gone insane and he had a weapon to boot. It was only a piece of driftwood, but Phil had sadly experienced first hand just how deadly it was. And now Jimmy was whacking himself with it. 'What the hell is he doing?'

Okay, Jimmy seemed to have gone off the deep end a lot worse than Marco had initially thought. And then when Marco came close to Jennifer and Alex, he was struck by a blow. It wasn't a physical one from Jimmy's weapon, however. It was a mental one that came from Jennifer's mouth as she turned to face him. 'Did... did she just tell me to fuck off?!'

Marco stood dumbstruck for a couple of seconds. Her words were unbelieveably cold. There she was, running blindly towards someone who'd just that second killed Phil, and she was telling him to leave her alone to fend Jimmy off? She was in danger of getting herself killed from either him or Alex, for God's sake! He was only trying to help her, and she goes and tells him to fuck off and never come back.

'You... you ungrateful little...'

Marco would normally have remained calm and maybe would have backed down, but with the high pressure environment and having just witnessed his friend being beaten to death, Marco damn near exploded.

"Jennifer, have you gone fucking insane?! Get the fuck away from him, he's going to kill you!" he screamed at the icepick-wielding girl, fury etched on his face. Then he turned to face Alex. That bastard was still hanging around, still being a potential danger, both to him and Jennifer. Not if Marco had any say in the matter. "And you," he seethed, putting his hand inside his bag and feeling around for own his weapon, "you can just get lost! I shouldn't have brought you along with us, I should've just left you behind!" His fingers wrapped themselves around the candelabra and he yanked the weapon out, pointing it right at Alex's frightened face. He didn't plan on using it other than a way to intimidate the boy. Hopefully he'd take the hint.

A primal scream grabbed his attention, Marco whipping round to see Jimmy hurtling towards the three of them, bloodied plank in hand, murder in his eyes. 'Oh shit.'

"Jennifer! Move it!" he hollered, barely having enough time to shout at her, let alone turn to run away.

((Cassidy Wakemore continued from The Moon is Laughing at You))

The three of them walked through the woods, chatting it up, nattering on about a conversation topic that Cassidy couldn't even remember five minutes after the talk cut short. She remembered her contribution, talking about a character named Sword man, who wielded swords instead of hands. He also had swords for legs and swords for arms and swords for a head. She got a laugh out of that mental image, and tried to focus on it a bit more as Duncan's eyes crept towards Maria's bare torso. Maria didn't bother Cassie as much, obviously. She'd go topless too if her shirt wasn't so comfortable. Yeah, that was the reason. It had nothing to do with shame about her height. Why the fuck would you even think that?

Once again, the screeching of the announcements, a surefire attention-getter if there ever was one, made her spasm and drop that javelin. Fucking Danya couldn't let her rest in peace, could he? Whoops, bad choice of words.

She listened again, trying to piece together the names, but once again she felt weird and scatterbrained. Didn't know him, didn't know her, might have taken art with her that one time, shared a grand total of two jokes with that guy, and so on and so on. When the announcements ended, she realized that Maria'd heard something in them that shocked her. What was it? Oh right. Omar. Warren's killer, now killed himself. Duncan didn't know what to say about that, and Cassie didn't either. She just settled with giving Maria a big hug along with him.

"Duncan," she heard Maria whisper. "I... I lo-"

Cassie blinked a few times. What was-

"RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWRGH!"

That killed the hug pretty quickly. The three of them untangled themselves from each others' arms and rushed towards the source of the roar, only to discover an ultraviolent spectacle unfold before them. At least the others did. Cassie spent thirty seconds tripping and getting back up and remembering to pick up her javelin again.

The first participant in the struggle was a big, beefy sports guy. Maria didn't know who he was; she knew none of the sports guys. None of them. Well, she kinda knew that one guy who was an asshole on the first day. Wasn't he dead now? That kinda sucked.

This particular sports guy wasn't doing too well, either. Cassie saw him brush away some soda stuff from his face when she caught up with Maria and Duncan, and within seconds, he went from trash talking to falling speechless, choking on his words collapsing to his knees. The sounds of his struggling mouth reached Cassie's ears, and before she knew it, she started giggling. She couldn't help it. The sounds sports guy was making sounded like a duck quacking. An angry little duck fending off attempts to get her wee little ducklings. Fucking hilarious.

And to top it all off, combatant number two rushed forward and hit the duck pinata with his big stick. It was good old Jimmy Brennan, the loser that nobody believed in! The man no one wanted! And he's proving himself with the final whack of a pinata at the world champion's pinata-whacking competition! Go get 'im, Jimmy! Oh no, the bat's breaking the candy inside! Shame on you, Jimmy! Now you won't be able to eat the candy!

Yes! He did it! He proved himself to the world! Maria felt like cheering, right up to the point that the scent of hot, spilled blood reached her nose. That's when it hit her, when she realized what really happened. Jimmy wasn't a scrappy underdog, he was a petty, vicious self-absorbed cuntblower who'd become the butt monkey of Bayview High for very good reason. The sports guy wasn't a pinata, he was a normal sports guy who lost his temper, also probably for very good reason. And there was no cheering crowd, just Maria breaking her stunned silence in order to give that whorefucker a piece of her mind.

Cassie had actually slipped into another world, a world was red was green and wrong was right. The thought of it made her spew the meager contents of her stomach onto the ground below.

She shivered and looked up, dreading the sight of Jimmy basking in the sports guy's blood. She also saw three others, two guys and a girl, who were none too pleased with Jimmy either. The feeling seemed mutual for Jimmy, and he screamed like a monkey and charged at the rest of the group.

Shivering fingers gripped the hard wooden shaft of her javelin. Cassie frowned and lifted it into the air, determined to strike down Jimmy like an angry god. With a sudden jerk she bent forward and threw it with all her might.

It buried its head in the sand with a feeble nosedive, hurting nothing. Probably for the best, though Cassie didn't think of it that way at the time.

Nobody was listening, or really even paying attention to her, other than a curt "Fuck off." Looks like there was gonna be another fight to the death between Jimmy and this other girl. She was gonna have to watch somebody else die right in front of her. Even though she herself had taken a life (maybe even more so BECAUSE she'd taken a life,) she was getting sick of all the death and killing and killing and death and killing going on right in front of her. And how she felt like, even when she was directly involved in it, it still felt like it was all out of her control.

She was desperate. Reaching back and grabbing hold of the flare gun in the back of her jeans, she whipped it out and pointed it right at the two.

"EVERYBODY JUST KNOCK IT OFF!"

Maria stood there in silence for a moment, looking between the two. She didn't give a shit that one of them was Jimmy Brennan, and that he'd just killed someone. She just wanted it to stop. She wanted to assert some control over the cascading situation in front of her.

"Uh...Maria? Y-you aren't really gonna shoot that thing, are you?"

Maria was brought back to reality by a clearly surprised and somewhat shaken Duncan, and began to realize just in how much deep shit she put herself in. She'd gone and pointed her gun at a group without any kind of plan, and better yet the damn thing wasn't even loaded. And this wasn't something she could take back either. One doesn't just point a gun at a bunch of pissed-off people, and then just put away and go "Oops sorry I didn't really mean it let's just pretend that didn't happen so how about this weather?"

Duncan noticed as Maria did her best deer in the headlights impersonation as her situation dawned on her, seeing her breaking out into a cold sweat. What the hell do they do now? Should they just make a run for it? That seemed like the best ide-

Suddenly, a javelin landed in the sand nearby, and looking back revealed that it was Cassidy that threw it, only serving to elevate the situation. What the hell, did SHE want to fight, too? Duncan was starting to get the idea that this whole thing was gonna end even worse than it already was.

Flying towards Jennifer, swinging his weapon wildly about in the air, Jimmy Brennan was locked in a dream. An over saturated, adrenaline fueled hell ride, his body screaming with the pain of every jolting motion. But he couldn't stop. He was on autopilot, his mind working, his body functioning on it's own. And even then, rage was pumping through his mind, blasting on loudspeakers, obscuring natural thought. Jennifer was all that mattered. Jennifer and her brains, splattered on the course sand.

"FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Jimmy screamed as he swung the stick toward Jennifer's head.

The crack was deafening. Jimmy had never seen the parry coming, if it was even intended. Jennifer's icepick was up, locking with Jimmy's weapon, breaking the tree branch to splinters. Through a red tinted haze, Jimmy met the force behind the parry full on. He stumbled and careened, head over heels. His weapon was gone, broken into a thousand pieces. With a painful crunch, Jimmy's blood smeared head hit the sand and he gradually grinded to a stop.

His vision was fading, black seemingly coming in from all sides. His heart pounded in his chest.

They want this to be the end, don't they?

Flailing his limbs, Jimmy twisted around onto his back grabbing for a splintered piece of the branch. It wasn't a bat, it wasn't an icepick. But it would cause a nasty wound.

If I just try, I can break them all. They want it to be done, they want me to give in. Well fuck you, you faggot. 'ain't gonna be that easy, no, NOT AT ALL!

Gripping the broken branch end in his hand, Jimmy spit sand at the group. Marco and Alex were holding back, watching the scene. He jabbed the shiv menacingly a them, his face contorted in rage.

"Back you motherfuckers! I'll stick you, I'll stick you two, and the bitch!" He screamed, edging back through the sand, away from the group.

You wanna maul me to death? I'll take your eyes with me! I'll rip out your throat, bash out your brains from the inside! I'll do it all, just gimme a chance, gimme a reason, gimme a CHANCE!

Shouting.

Threats.

A gun.

Fuck it.

No way they'd shoot her.

No way they'd shoot Jimmy.

Not a thing she could do if they did.

Someone tossed a spear or something.

Big fucking deal.

Jimmy was coming closer.

Screaming.

Yelling.

Waving that stick.

Trying to kill her.

Someone was actually trying to kill her.

Death.

The end.

He wished that on her?

Smile.

A flash.

Why had she moved her arm like that?

Splinters flying everywhere.

Jimmy toppling, confused.

Shocked.

Disarmed.

Helpless.

Jennifer blinked.

Her wrist hurt.

Not badly.

What now?

The answer should have been simple. It was easy. He had attacked her. Tried to kill her. Murdered Phil. Jennifer had been expecting her reflexes, her automatic reactions, to carry her through this, to cause her to fall upon Jimmy, laughing and shrieking and cutting and stabbing, to extract vengeance, satisfaction, blood and guts.

There was none of that.

Jennifer simply stood, looking down on the boy. Watching him grope for a weapon, start backing away. Automatically, she followed, matching his crawling pace. Smiling still.

On some level, she wasn't surprised at all by what came next. Oblivious to the others, totally ignoring Maria, Duncan, Cassidy, Marco, and Alex, she locked eyes with Jimmy as he spoke, as he threatened her and the others. Then, she spoke.

"I know what those words mean.

"Don't think that way.

"You're worth more than that."

Not her own words. Not her own thoughts, but someone else's. Something someone had said to her a lifetime ago. Something that seemed fitting now.

She kept going, and now the words were different, now they were her own.

"What you did doesn't matter. What you do doesn't matter. We're all going to die here, Jimmy. The only choice we have left is how we do it. And Jimmy, whatever you've done, whatever anyone else has done to you, you always have a choice. At the end of the day, you can always decide who you are. No one else can take that away from you."

She blinked a couple of times. Her grip on the icepick was loose. She glanced around. People here. Lots of people.

Jennifer shivered. What the fuck was she doing? A quick glance at the body, just a body, not Phil anymore. Nothing she could do to help him. Nothing she could do to help anyone. All her calm, her cool, was evaporating, leaving her aching and terrified.

Without a word, she raced to where her bags had fallen, scooped them up, and just kept running.

Get away.

Get away now.

Alex stared, mouth agape, not believing what had happened.

His prize... shattered beyond usability.

"Brennan... bastard... this can't be... ARGH!" He yelled in frustration. He rose to his feet in anger.

Why you little... you stupid... can't even think straight!

He glared at Jennifer. To his surprise, she left. She didn't finish the loser off.

Neither was Alex going to. Not without a weapon. Especially with the hallucinations getting worse.

Blood was replaced by a thick black tar. Brennan didn't even look like a person anymore. He was a horrible little imp who had broken Alex's last and best hope for making it in the game.

As infuriated as Alex was, as much as he wanted to throttle the life out of that thing, he couldn't.

Run.

That was the only option left.

Alex turned around. "Screw this. I'm leaving."

He ran, to where he didn't know but he knew he had to get out of there.

The smell of the ocean filled his nostrils. Very salty, it stank. Maybe because it was made of blood.

That was probably why.

Not crazy. Not crazy. Not crazy.

Marco didn't believe that the situation could get any worse than it already was. Yet, despite what he thought, it just did. A javelin of all things landed point-first into the sand a few yards away from him, dragging his attention away from Jennifer and Jimmy. Looking back to the trees, he saw three people where there had been two previously. And to make matters even worse, one of the original pair was pointing some kind of gun at the group. 'What the hell? They're not helping things!' he exasperatedly thought.

CRACK

Marco whirled back round to face the confrontation and saw Jimmy on the floor, Jennifer standing over him with the icepick on her hand. At first Marco throught Jennifer had hit him, until he saw the piece of wood had been reduced to splinters. Some still looked quite big and some were pretty sharp, perfect for inflicting serious stab wounds.

And then Jennifer finally decided to take Marco's advice and run for it. Marco would've run after her, but after what he'd just seen, he determined that she was dangerous to be around with. Not to mention the fact she didn't want him around, she'd said that herself. And as for Alex...

'...Hang on, where is Alex?'

Alex was no longer where he was standing last, and looking around the vicinity he could see him running away as well. 'Well good riddance to him,' Marco thought, turning back to the wretched boy sitting up on the floor. It would have been all too easy to overpower him, pummel his head in with the candelabra, make him experience what Phil must've felt when he was being killed. But Marco wasn't going to fight him, oh no. Violence was not the answer. He was just going to leave him. Leave him to think about what he'd done.

"I won't bother with you, Jimmy," Marco coldly spoke, standing a safe distance from him. "I'm not gonna stoop to your level. You killed someone, Jimmy, remember that!" he shouted, pointing at the redhead while still gripping the candelabra tightly. "Enjoy being a murderer, Jimmy, enjoy the fact you just took someone's life!"

Turning around on the sand, he started to sprint away from Jimmy in different directions to Jennifer and Alex. As far he was concerned, he never wanted to see either of them ever again.

Cassie blinked and looked back and forth between her javelin and the other combatants, who didn't seem to notice her at all. Then she turned back to Duncan and Maria and the debate on whether or not to use her flare gun. Didn't Maria run out of flares earlier? Apparently not.

But her attention shifted back to the javelin, which was just lying there and could be stolen by anyone near the melee right now. She got ready to haul ass and go back for it, crouching and making motions that almost started her run towards it. The perfect opportunity came when the girl down there countered Jimmy and shattered his branch weapon, making it look entirely effortless to thoroughly disarm the dumbass.

She sped across the dunes and grabbed the shaft of her weapon, pulling it out of the sand and holding onto it as tightly as he could. There wasn't any more fighting left to be done, though. The other girl just made an appeal to Jimmy's better nature and ran. So did the rest of her companions, though they didn't so much run as scatter.

They left her with just Jimmy nearby, and Duncan and Maria were much farther away. As soon as Cassie realized this, she started backing away from Jimmy, trying to keep her weapon ready for defense without looking threatening to Jimmy. Running away seemed like a great idea right now.

Jimmy had never been more confused in his life. Scrambling backwards on the beach, panting out what he was sure would be his final few breathes... The idea his foes, moments from victory would cut and run? It was unthinkable. But as Jimmy watched the three figures of Jennifer, Marco and Alex disappear in the tree line he realized it wasn't some clever ruse. They'd turned tail, run without leaving a scratch on him. How? Why?

Do they think I can't take it?! I can't take death? No... no. I scared them. I scared them off, they know I'd take them, they know I'd have fought it out.. Hah! They ran!

Giving a shaky laugh, Jimmy clambered up to his feet. His body ached and his head was numb. The trio was far away. Jimmy laughed. He could hear Alex- or was it Marco? Marco. His words, ringing in his head. Anger danced across his face. Cupping his hands, Jimmy took a step forward, shouting at the top of his lungs after the boy.

Enjoy being a murderer?! I'm not a murderer. What's he talking about? That... that was justice. Retribution. Satisfaction.

"MARCOOOO! MARCO! YOU KNOW WHAT? I WILL ENJOY IT, YOU SON OF A BITCH! I'LL ENJOY EVERY LAST SECOND! IF I EVER SEE YOUR FUCKIN' FACE AGAIN- MARCO! MARCO I'LL BE COMING FOR YOU NEXT TIME!"

Letting his shout echo off down the beach, Jimmy panted in relief. The dizzy feeling in his head hadn't receded yet. He wasn't sure why. His heart was pounding like crazy, holding his left hand over it he felt it thump against his rib cage, puttering along without fail. Jimmy spit, red blood on the sandy beach. His clothes were a mess, wet and now covered in sand. The discomfort was notable, but he had bigger things to consider, much bigger things.

From beside Jimmy, there was movement. Looking up, he saw a girl, someone he didn't recognize. Evidently she appeared to have been retrieving the thrown spear from just a little while ago. Jimmy cocked his head, looking at the girl with confusion. A part of him wanted to leap out, wrestle the weapon away... But no.

Jimmy was tired. He could feel it, thumping in his bones. He could fight, he would fight if need be... But no. She could keep the damn spear if she wanted. Shooting the girl a nasty glare, Jimmy turned and began to walk down the beach, back toward the jungle, not bothering to even pick up his pack.

What now... where to? Anywhere. Anywhere I fucking want.

He giggled despite himself. He could hear Jennifer talking, telling him he was going to die. It was ridiculous, absurd. Heroes didn't die. And Jimmy was, if nothing else, a hero.

This is how it starts. I take it to them now, all those motherfuckers. I can win this game. I WILL win this game. Not for them, not for America or Jesus. Me. Only me. Because I'm the motherfucking fittest. Thanks Danya. Thank you, more then you know, you fat bastard.

Jimmy stumbled into the jungle, laughing a bloodthirsty laugh.

Thanks for the intervention buddy...

...what the hell? Maria had just pulled out a flare gun and yelled for everyone to cut this shit out right now, and nobody even reacted. In fact, they all acted like she wasn't even there. She was relieved that nobody was hurt, but she also felt rather insulted, too. Did she really have that little presence?

Maria let out a deep sigh as everyone vacated the premises, leaving just her, Duncan and Cass.

...and Phil.

Maria walked up to Phil and stared down at his battered body, and honestly didn't know what to think. She just stood there, unable to conjure up any kind of emotion, until a thought came to her.

That was it. Everyone who had wronged her on the island so far had been dealt with. Omar, Phil, they were both dead, and in fact she'd just watched as Phil got a blow back for every one he'd given to her.

It was justice.

Suddenly Maria could feel the bile rising in her throat, and turned away from Phil, scrambling to the nearby building before doubling over, emptying the contents of her stomach onto the ground beneath her. Her head spun with dizziness and nausea, and even as there was nothing left to let go of, she felt like she could keep going, as if her own body was punishing her for thinking like that.

"M-Maria!" Duncan shouted, running over beside her and kneeling down, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?"

"I...I-I..." Maria's breath was heavy and a bit ragged, and tears were running down her face and she didn't even know why. Duncan let out a sigh and helped her to her feet, letting her brace herself against him as she got her bearings back.

"Duncan...Cass, let...let's just get out of here. I don't want to be here anymore..." Maria said weakly, pulling away from Duncan and sticking the flare gun back into the back of her jeans again, picking up her pack and staggering away, not even bothering to look back, lest she catch sight of Phil's corpse again and the sudden rush of nausea and emotion come back for an encore.

Cassie nodded and followed Maria and Duncan away. As she left, she glanced back at the corpse on the beach and sighed.

"So long, sports guy."

He'd be lonely for quite a while longer.
