The Gods Hate Us

Celeste's Death

The tunnels, as the result of the failed mining experiment on the island, are rather simple, leading into the mountain and heading out towards the mansion grounds. While the entrance from the mine is still clear, the entrance from the grounds is more overgrown with thick foliage as if the owner of the mansion wished for it to be kept as invisible as possible and prevent the local populace from trespassing. It is hard to breathe and almost impossible to see without a light source down in the mine. These tunnels stretch all throughout the Northern part of the island, allowing access at several points in the felled forest and near the beach.

[[Celeste Beaumont continued from Living In The Aftermath]]

Fuck...fuck...fuck... Celeste leaned against the wall of the tunnel, mentally swearing in time to her tired pants. She'd been running since the Sawmill, not very fast, and she had to stop and rest so many damned times...What I get for skipping Gym, looks like. Karma finally catching up with me for that. You anger the Gym Gods and they pull this bullshit on you, she thought, laughing dryly to herself. Put ya on some bullshit island in the middle of fucking nowhere, send your own classmates to kill you...

Kill.

Celeste looked down at her hands, as if she'd just now realized that her sledgehammer was gone. Well, fuck. How was she to defend herself now? She'd be fine as long as she was with a friend, she had reasoned--well, not even a friend exactly, just someone who wasn't insane or a jerkass in general. They would have a weapon, they would protect her. They had to, right? Celeste was just a small, thin little girl, and...well, people protected girls like that, didn't they?

John woulda protected me, she thought to herself, curling her fingers towards her palms, nails digging into the skin til they made tiny crescents in her skin. She hadn't heard his name in the announcements yet...so he must still be okay. Hell, he was a big guy, he could protect her and Kayla--Celeste didn't wanna leave Kayla by herself, Kayla didn't seem too confident herself.

Wait...Kayla.

Celeste looked over her shoulder into the darkness, struggling to see someone's--anyone's form. Kayla was missing...Where did she...?

It started to come back to her. Celeste's hands had gotten sweaty in her running, in her panic. She had to let go of Kayla's hand a few times, wipe her own hand...at some point or another, Celeste supposed she'd had to let go for longer than three seconds, just kept running in blind panic...

Which meant she'd lost Kayla.

Oh....shit. "Kayla?! You follow me in here?!" she shouted, straightening up, shouting down one random direction.

((Meredith continued from http://s10.zetaboards.com/SOTF_V2/topic/7298468/3/))

A day had passed since Meredith took her bath in the stream and when she'd had her moment with Thea and Evie. The rest of that day seemed rather dull and hazy in comparison.

She returned to the mirror house to get some fresh clothing. More importantly, she'd picked up one of the longer shards of mirror and wrapped the base with one of her shirts to form a shiv. She'd tested the edge with her fingers and it had sliced through her skin quite neatly. As soon as she was done, she'd realised that she had no bread or water and no way to replenish them. She headed for the tunnels soon after, seeing them as a way to keep out of sun, and had spent the rest of the day sleeping. She hadn't gone far into them, since she didn't want to get lost.

She was awake now and thinking through the day's events. Even now, she still wasn't quite sure what had happened between her and Evie. She remembered hitting Thea with the baton, remembering how good it felt that for once in her life, all eyes were on her and nobody else.

Was she evil?

The beast wanted to eat. It had made a game to get its food. Feeding the beast had felt so good. She'd never experienced a rush quite like that before.

Was she evil?

Meredith wasn't sure. She felt a little guilty that she didn't feel guilty at all. Thea deserved to be hit. Hitting Thea had made her smile. Hitting Thea felt right.

Was she evil?

Meredith didn't have an answer, but she wanted to feel that beautiful feeling again. Besides, she wouldn't be evil if the person getting hit this time fully deserved it just like Sofia, Evie and Thea did.

Somewhere further down the tunnels, she heard a voice call out for someone. She recognised it. Celete Beaumont.

Meredith grinned and walked towards the source of the sound, her weapon at the ready.

She didn't hear a response--didn't see anyone either. Damn it! she thought, curling her hands into fists again. She'd gone and lost her only companion in this game, the only person who could watch her back--the only person who had a weapon at the moment, considering...

It's a lose-lose scenario, looks like, Celeste couldn't help but think to herself as she leaned forward, hands against the cool wall of the tunnel, fingers digging into it. Breathing heavily in anger, trying to calm down some, she rested her forehead against the wall now. I left the hammer, guess that's okay, cuz it woulda slowed me down and I'd end up with a cap in my skull...On the other hand, now i can't defend myself. Yeah, the thing was heavy, but Celeste could have lifted it. She thought.

Yeah, she could have, if she had enough adrenaline.

"Fuck my life," she grumbled, beating her head against the wall, trying to calm the pounding in her head as her heart beat faster. No use getting too angry...she'd turn around, go back for Kayla, regroup...they'd be safe. All she had to do was turn around and go back the way she came.

A task that was easier said than done, she realized as she lifted her head away, eyes adjusted enough to see that she was well and truly lost. The tunnels formed a maze of sorts, it was easy to get lost if you had no map, didn't make a trail. And Celeste, frightened as she'd been, hadn't thought of either. She'd just ran for it, taking each turn as it came to her.

"...fuck."

Nothing to do now but...at least try. Celeste shoved herself away from the wall, walking in the other direction, grumbling angrily. It was okay, though...she was safe in the tunnels. No one would stupid enough to come in there.

Right?

((Kayla McArthur continued from Living in The Aftermath))

Kayla was lost. She couldn't remember exactly when she had lost sight of Celeste. She assumed it was somewhere around here, when she had tripped, nearly stabbed herself on her sword, and looked up in time to see Celeste run into the tunnels. That was a fairly safe assumption. Adrenaline and fear had spurred Celeste further onward, ignoring Kayla's yells. Had it not been for the fact that Kayla had twisted her ankle, she would have been up immediately and sprinting to catch up, but....

So now, with her ankle throbbing and unable to run, Kayla limped through the dark tunnels, listening closely. Calling out was a dangerous thing to do right now, despite the fact that she was unlikely to find Celeste without sound. She had also elected to avoid using her flash light for as long as possible. So far that had earned her two banged knees and a scraped shin, but she was starting to get used to the darkness.

Wait. What was that?

She had hear her name, yelled out from somewhere up ahead. It had sounded like Celeste, although the darkness seemed to distort sounds. The smallest footfall sounded like the step of a giant. Still, Kayla was on the right track, hopefully.

Unfortunately, no other yells came from ahead. Kayla, still nervous about other people being around, didn't call out in reply. She merely continued walking forward.

Meredith sidled forward until she could see Celeste's outline in the darkness. She'd been walking in a straight line from where she was and her eyes had adjusted to the dark somewhat. She wouldn't have a problem exiting the tunnels later, she thought.

She shuddered, holding her baton in front of her, her shiv neatly tucked away in some part of the jacket for now, point down so that she could grab it by the hilt. Not that she cared if she cut her fingers on it if she had to use it. It wasn't so sharp that it would slice anything open without a proper slicing motion anyway - she'd tested it on some of her other clothes first.

Still, she didn't want to be evil. Maybe this girl would actually do the right thing for once. Maybe she'd write in the notebook. Then, Meredith wouldn't have to kill her. She reached into another pocket with her left hand, pulling out the ring-bound "Sandman's death" notebook and holding it out in front of her.

"Welcome. I am Pandora Black. I've been trying to keep the records of the beast's game. Would you, perhaps, like to write a letter home?" she said, a faint smile on her face.

She held the book out in front of her, pushing it towards Celeste. As she did so, her fingers clutched her baton tightly.

Someone was coming. Celeste straightened up further, looking like there was a yardstick down her shirt and she was nailed to it, the way she stood. Allowing a tense, though somewhat-friendly smile to appear on her lips, she jogged forward. "Ah, thank God... Was afraid I lost ya for--wait." She stopped at the same time the other person did, and though it was dark, Celeste could still see that this was not Kayla.

"Damn..." she grumbled. Well, it wasn't so bad. This chick was still a person, a potential bodyguard of sorts--

"Welcome. I am Pandora Black. I've been trying to keep the records of the beast's game. Would you, perhaps, like to write a letter home?"

"Wait...what?" Celeste asked incredulously, squinting at the girl and tilting her head. What...who? She didn't remember a Pandora Black in any of her classes--a name like that, that sounded like either a video-game slut or a porn star, of course she would have remembered her. And...oh God, she sounded like a video-game character, too. "What do you want me to write with?" Celeste couldn't help snapping, though she tried to keep her irritation in check. "I got no pencils, pens, no pin to prick a finger with--a letter home would have to be mailed out, how the hell do you expect to do that?!" She leaned forward, squinting at the paper for more writing...damn tunnels made it hard to see if there was any, though.

"Top of everything else, I can't see... How can I see what I'm doing, huh?" she added, in a slightly softer, though still frustrated, voice.

There was one thing though...Celeste managed another little smile at this thought--calling this situation "The Beast's Game" was kinda cool. Props to Pandora for that.

((For future reference, I don't really care if you guys skip me. Kayla is mostly going to be lost for now, and therefor all my posts will be boring and short. So yeah, just consider me out of the post order for now.))

Kayla found herself hopelessly lost. With no other auditory input, she suspected she had completely missed the tunnel leading to Celeste in the dark. So, to keep from freaking out and also to keep from spooking somebody dangerous, she sat down near the wall and stared into space. She kept her ears open, for Celeste's voice.

She heard nothing.

((Ooc: Sorry took me so long. Having some busy days at work.))

Meredith looked at Celeste and sighed, a slow, wistful sound. "I have implements of writing, so you need not use your own. Since you cannot see in this darkness, I can lead you out of these tunnels in exchange for a bite of your bread and a sip of your water."

Her hand hovered momentarily over the hilt of her shiv, fingers just touching the cloth part. It would be so easy. So easy right now to cut into the other girl's face, but Meredith knew that the girl hadn't damned herself yet.

Besides, she had a duty to perform and the girl hadn't quite said no, even if she had smiled. She hadn't rejected Meredith, just voiced some frustrations. She didn't deserve to die. Not yet.

"Will you come with me? What is your name? I doubt it is on the lists of the dead since you seem to be alive right now." Meredith whispered.

Bread and water...like a fairytale witch, Celeste couldn't help think, wondering why she was thinking of fairytales of all things right now. She'd never liked those--Mom had read them to her and her sister at night, when they were little. Celeste had hated them, found them boring for some reason--that was the exact opposite reaction of what they were supposed to get, weren't they?--but for some reason, the witch/fairy/what-the-hell-ever who did a good deed in return for a small kindness stuck with her. She didn't know why, after all, where would she really run into someone like that?

Yet here they both were.

Why not? she thought to herself, grinning even wider--an ironic grin now, not holding much good humor. "Yeah, sure...water and bread in return for leading Red Riding Sweater out of the dark and dank tunnels, eh? Can I call you 'fairy helper?'" she asked, holding her hand out for a pencil.

Oh, but wait--Celeste pulled her hand back again, slightly. This Pandora chick might not stay with her after leading her from the tunnels--in fact, Celeste wouldn't out it past her to be staying in there, hoping to ride out, or rather hide out, the entire game. Least 'til the tunnels become a danger-zone, she thought to herself. But if Pandora really was staying in here...

"Wait. I got a friend I lost here--can't remember when exactly," she half-lied, "but she's probably stuck here too. She's got a weapon, I don't. I need to be with her if we're gonna live through this--gotta go back for my hammer of course," she shrugged. "But yeah, she's stuck here too. You wanna lead us Both out, Fairy Pandora?" Remembering what Pandora had offered, Celeste quickly followed with "I'll give you double the bread and water you requested."

Meredith looked at the other girl, just staring for a moment as she considered Celeste's counter offer. Her fingers tickled the makeshift hilt of the shiv in her coat. The little blade was calling out to her, begging her to end the other girl's pain right now, while she still could.

Except, she couldn't because the girl was so cheerful and kind. She hadn't taunted Meredith. Hadn't called her a loser or insulted her. She'd simply made a counter offer, one that Meredith couldn't refuse.

She'd taken Meredith seriously.

Meredith swallowed and forced her head to nod. She tore hand away from the shiv, that ever present temptation, and held it out for Celeste to shake.

"Very well." She said, "I will do as you ask, for a loaf of bread and bottle of water. You will follow me closely and hold onto the edge of my cloak. Do not let go. I have no wish for you to disappear into the darkness. Hades is big and the labyrinth is deep. I will not find you if you disappear."

"Thanks," Celeste grinned, mostly in relief, as she reached out, squeezing Pandora's hand tightly in hers. Giving it one good, hard shake, she nodded her head in thanks. "'preciate it. Dunno if you wanna leave the tunnels yourself--I mean, hey, if you're good at hiding in them and you've memorized the layout, why spoil a good thing, eh?" Well, until it was announced as a danger-zone. "Wait, no...when you hear it in the announcements, the tunnel fairy's gotta leave, 'kay? Hide in the trees maybe." Celeste shrugged a bit. Would Pandora hide in trees?

Maybe she was so attached to a particular spot that she'd stay in the tunnels after after they were announced as "blow your head up" areas, she'd stay in there. Celeste couldn't say she'd be sad, but she still didn't like the thought. "Don't want your head mangled..." she muttered.

"Soooo....'Hades.' The notebook. All that shit...coping mechanism, right?" Celeste asked, tilting her head a bit. "Treat it like a game or something, things are better? Or a fairytale?" Wasn't a bad method, she thought...She wanted to keep Pandora talking--hearing someone speak in the dark made her feel a bit safer, and Kayla might hear their voices and find them again all the faster. "Where'd you come up with that stuff?"

Meredith nodded, listening to Celeste's chatter. It didn't bother her. Everyone was scared. The harsh reality of the past four days made Bayview and St Paul seem so far away, like a distant memory that didn't matter.

But Meredith remembered. She sympathised.

She used the same strategy when she was in Bayview.

Talking staved off the fear.

"I speak as I always have. It is then as it is now as it will be until my flesh and bones are cold in the heat of the sun." She said simply, "We have been forsaken and thrown into the realm of nightmare. The beast hungers for our hatred."

Making sure that Celeste was following her, she turned a corner, knowing that it would lead the pair deeper into the tunnels. Meredith had time to explore the tunnels. She'd kept a small map of them in her head, but mostly, she kept a map in her notebook. She consulted it now.

"I listen to the words of the dead uttered by the mouth of the beast in the morning. I do not go to his lair." She continued as she checked her map, making sure she knew where they were going. "I closed the eyes and covered the face of the burned boy who stared at the stars from the steps of the black palace. This book is my mission. It will be taken to the place of shallow lives that lies beyond the nightmare."

She made two lefts, then a right. Then paused and turned to face the girl behind her. If they were to search for this friend of hers, they would end up searching quite methodically combing the tunnels until there was not a part of it that was left unexplored. Hopefully, their search would bring up Celeste's friend.

"Where did you lose your friend in Hades?" she asked.

((I appear once more! WAHA))

Kayla jerked into wakefulness once more. She had sat down, resting her tired body and tired legs. Unfortunately, her tired eyes and mind had taken over and dropped her into sleep. She panicked for a moment, then found her sword lying beside her. She stood up and yawned. It was then she realized what had woken her.

Footsteps nearby. And voices as well. Specifically one voice- Celeste's. Kayla started walking toward the voices now, slowly, keeping her eyes open for paths.

A second voice. Kayla froze. She didn't recognize it at all.

"Celeste," she called. "Is that you?"

Celeste just stared at the back of Pandora's head, an eyebrow raised. Wow. Even if it was a coping mechanism, it was a creepy one. All the talk of the Beast was making Celeste a bit nervous, and the fact she spoke so casually about a burned body...touched it...Celeste suppressed a shudder. She couldn't imagine touching a dead classmate. Much less facing one. Christ.

"Hm...can't really remember," Celeste shrugged, hands on her hips. She tried to appear and sound as casual as possible, tried not to let Pandora's...semi-crazy-talk get to her. "I held her hand for a while...then I remember letting go, but that was way at the start. And I can't remember where exactly we did separate, all's I know is I just realized she was gone. ...oops?" She grinned in part amusement, part shame, ducking her head a bit. Saying it out loud, she felt pretty embarrassed. Losing her partner/bodyguard like that...

A faint voice was heard down the tunnel, and Celeste straightened up. "Speak of the devil...THAT YOU?" she shouted suddenly. She grinned wider, teeth showing, as she turned to face Pandora again. "Hey, might not need your services much longer after all."

((ooc: Apologies. Was busy.))

Meredith stiffened when Celeste began to shout. She hissed at the girl.

"Do you want to attract the shades of Hades? Keep your tongue still lest they come for us both." she murmured.

At the girl's next words, Meredith gave a shiver, whirling around on the heels of her boots and whipping her coat out of Celeste's hands. She didn't want the other girl to leave her, not this girl who had accepted her at face value, who wasn't afraid. Her fingers inched towards the hilt of her shiv. If she killed the girl now, then Celeste would never leave Hades.

Meredith shook her head, there were other, pressing matters at hand. She had made a promise.

"I will take my payment now, please. One loaf of bread and one bottle of water. Then I will lead you and your friend out of Hades. Would that I could trust you, but the actions of others have left me wanting."

She glanced over at the remainder of the tunnel and whispered, "Pay me not and I will strike you dead where you stand. Or perhaps I will simply disappear and let you and your friend wander Hades until the beast builds its lair here. It is your choice."

She stared at Celeste, daring the other girl to respond.
