"Yeah, I know." Desiree dropped the plastic wrap under the table, and it silently stopped on the floor. She watched Violet press down on the planchette. Her hands raised to join Violet's but only made it up as far as the edge of the table before she hesitated.

Was she really going to do this? Risk summoning a poltergeist just to apologize to a rat?

It wasn't too late. She could back out right now. Violet would understand.

Moments passed, and the stalemate carried on. With a sigh and a whisper of an "okay" to herself, Desiree's hands moved again. Her fingers joined Violet's on the planchette, pressing down on the wood.

"Do you... mind being the one asking the questions?"

Fighting the urge to pull her fingers away was harder than she was comfortable with. This was the closest she had come to touching someone in a good long time, and she had intended on pushing things further even before this. Now she knew she could not do that; now she knew she had to do this.

Violet was hoping, personally, that she'd get to take on the other role. The role of merely contributing energy, letting Desiree guide the experience, since she knew her chinchilla quite a bit better than Violet did. Having to come up with questions for a specific spirit that she had never known and was an animal and on the spot too was kind of hard.

"Sure," she said, nodding, "I can do that."

She took a deep breath inward and thought of some positive things. Warmth. Sunlight. Violet closed her eyes.

A light emanating from her coming from her forehead, connecting to Desiree's heart, connecting to the vortex points of all things.

Vast oneness.

The universe as mental.

The correspondence of all things.

The vibration of all matter.

The polarity in each circumstance.

Masculine and feminine in each living being.

Cause and effect. Effect and cause.

The pendulum rhythm of existence.

Exhale.

"Hello," Violet intoned.

"Are there any spirits out there that would like to speak with us tonight?'

Nothing happened. Desiree cleared her throat and pressed down harder on the planchette. Whether do to Violet's or the lack of any spirit's influence, the piece didn't budge.

A chill ran down Desiree's spine.

And then the piece moved.

Desiree's eye widened and followed the planchette as it spelled out a message, a message she silently mouthed with each revealed letter.

Violet nodded and exhaled slightly. They had a presence. It was now time to make a guess on what that presence was. They wouldn't need to ask for a name yet, though. This first question, they could choose whether or not to continue pretty instantly. After all, they were only searching for a specific person. Animal. Thing.

"Thank you for joining us," she said, nodding her head slightly.

"We would invite you to answer some questions for us tonight, if it wouldn't trouble you."

Her hand tensed a little. Violet had to remind herself to keep composed. Gentle, yet firm.

"Were you, in the realm of the living, a human being?"

Oh.

Desiree grunted. Was this a setup? What was Violet planning?

"...I thought we were looking for a chinchilla," she said flatly, her eyes not moving from the planchette. She shuffled in her seat, her fingers pressing down even harder.

Huh.

Well, to say that she was expecting to get the chinchilla on the first try would be a lie. She was tempted to start from scratch and dismiss the spirit, but she also felt like it was special that they got into contact with anything in the first place. It was unlikely that the spirit would know of the chinchilla's passing, but it might be worth it to try once they ascertained its trust.

"How many of you are in this room with us, tonight?"

This might help. If this human spirit was the only one in the room they may as well dismiss it immediately. If not then they could ask it some questions and fish for another one afterwards.

Three ghosts? This was getting annoying. Desiree's fingers dug ever so closer to shattering the board. If this was some sort of elaborate mind game by Violet, then fine. Desiree could handle that.

"Where is Toby?" she demanded before Violet could intervene. "We have business with him."

Everyone else could take a damn number for all she cared.

Desiree's hands pulled back and left the planchette on the O with Violet's. Her blood boiled. "Wh-what the hell is this? What the fuck are you trying to pull?"

Violet fought to keep her own hand on the planchette.

"Wh-what are you talking about? I'm not pulling anything, I swear!"

She looked anxiously past Desiree and towards the back of the room.

"Please, calm down!"

Desiree pushed herself out of the chair. "Am I a fucking joke to you?" her words cut, her voice trembled. Her hand balled into a fist, fighting the urge to smack Violet across the room yet was dangerously close to knocking her the fuck out right there.

A loud bang rocked the room, right behind Desiree. She flinched and then turned around when it was safe. What was once a window had, on the inside panel, shattered into a quadrillion fragments that crackled and grew by the second.

She breathed and waited for her heart to calm down a little bit before sitting right back down.

Fearfully, Violet looked Desiree in the eyes. "No!" she spoke loudly, "I don't take anyone for granted like that! I— oh fuck!"

Interrupted by a loud banging sound from the other side of the room—the side she had been staring at—the side that she had just taken her eyes off of for a second—that side of the room, Violet half-jumped out of her seat, leaning far back in her chair, threatening to tumble over but teetering back to safety.

Desiree had frozen as well. She slowly swiveled her head to look behind her at the window. The glass had shattered for no reason at all.

Or, maybe, the glass had shattered because Desiree had taken both of her hands off of the planchette.

She made to sit back down. Violet put her other hand back on the planchette.

"I'm sorry," Violet said.
