A small crowd had gathered around them as Regina continued to cradle Adonis on her lap. He was still unconscious, and she didn’t know what to do in a situation like this. It scared her, and she felt so helpless. She wasn’t used to being so powerless in a situation, and she felt her chest tighten in anguish. The tears of frustration that had begin to pool in the corner of her eyes were well on their way to becoming full-on sobs any minute. She just wanted her friend to be okay. She’d never seen someone lose consciousness in front of her like this before. What was someone like her even supposed to do when something this terrible happened? She was most definitely not equipped for this kind of thing.
A section of the crowd parted, and Regina looked up to see the commanding form of Coach Oppenheimer standing before them. If it had been any other situation she would have found the fact that even on prom night he still wore a tracksuit, albeit one that looked a bit fancier than his usual day-to-day ones, absolutely hilarious. However, in this situation she couldn’t have been more grateful that he was the teacher that came to the rescue. From behind him the worried face of Ms. Prescott peered around him, looking slightly out of breath as if she’d just run to find the stronger man for this situation.
“Adonis, he-he just passed out, I didn’t know what to do. Is he going to be okay?” She questioned to the gym teacher, hoping he’d have a better answer than her own muddled brain could come up with.
The man squatted down and put a hand on her shoulder in reassurance. He motioned for her to lift his head, and he quickly and easily scooped Adonis out of her lap and off the ground into his own arms, carrying him bridal style, the boy’s head resting on the teacher’s chest.
“Don’t worry, it’s okay, we’re gonna make sure he’s just fine. Do me a favor, grab a cloth napkin and run it under some cold water, and wring it out nice. We’re gonna need a cool compress to put on his head.” The man smiled down at her, making her feel like he knew exactly what he was talking about.
He stood up with the boy in his arms and nodded to Ms. Prescott, alerting her that he had everything under control. The woman came up to Regina and offered her a hand to pull her up from the ground. Regina muttered a quick thank you before rushing off to grab a napkin off the closest table. Napkin in hand, she ran to the ladies room as fast as her dress would allow. She quickly doused the napkin in cold water, making sure the entire cloth was soaked, before wringing out as much water as she possibly could. Just as quickly as she entered, she left to find where the Coach and Adonis had made camp.
Finding them in the main hallway, she rushed over to the two. The Coach had lain the boy down on one of the sofas in the lounge area to rest. Seeing him still unconscious made her chest tighten a bit more, and she swiftly handed the cool compress over to the adult. He smiled at her and ran the cool cloth over Adonis’ face, before letting it stay on his forehead comfortably.
“Alright. Just stay here with him for now, and if nothing changes, then we’ll call an ambulance.” Regina looked at the man in horror, but he waved it off with a smile.
“It shouldn’t come to that though. He’ll probably wake up soon. He may have just been a little overheated. Nothing to worry about. His pulse is fine.”
Regina let out a sigh she didn’t even know she was holding in and thanked the man, taking a seat on the couch next to her friend, entwining her hand with his as she looked down on him, hoping he’d open his eyes soon.
