Empyrean

Calling Coleen, after that open

The main structure at the supply depot, the docks are designed to accommodate small to medium sized boats which would deliver food, general supplies, and luxury items such as books and newspapers for the staff. Originally a wooden construction, the docks were quickly reinforced with some concrete and steel to ensure they would last for the duration of the asylum's life on the island. The concrete gangways and metal railings that now make up the docks have proven to be sturdy constructions, even if they are not the most glamorous.

Coleen sighed, then let her lips slide themselves into a sorry excuse for a smile.

"Yeah... alright. Boy, Coleen, you find the person least likely to make fun of your face, and you totally blow the social interaction. You go, girl." Now was probably just as good a time as any to head on out, before she had to go and actually make Kimiko angry.  She gently pushed off of the old rusted railing and adjusted the strap on her backpack, still clinging to the spear. Once she was a healthy distance away and likely out of sight, she'd have to switch over the gun and be ready for anything.

Vanessa, killed by Maxim. Cameron, killed by Alessio. Brady and B.B., killed by crippling anxiety wondering where their missing friends could possibly... ah, heck, the whole world probably figured it out by now. Now if only the governments of the world, with all of their resources, could track down an entire island and save them. It had been more than a week after all and Google was a thing. So... so why? To know that they were all that unimportant, at least in the eyes of the world, would be disheartening to many.

No time to think about that. Coleen mattered to herself. Enzo and Kimiko mattered, at least they did.

All that had to be forced out of her head. Now, only one thing was allowed to matter and until she accomplished it, she wouldn't let herself lose focus.

Coleen walked backwards the first couple steps but then turned her shoulder and walked the rest of the way off the docks. No sense in keeping her face towards Kimiko. It's not like looking at the girl could stop a bullet if she decided to draw her weapon, so one final display of at least the slightest modicum of trust... even if trust is what apparently got Vanessa killed, not that the voice in the sky could be believed even a little bit, not after the ration of shit he'd been feeding them.

Finally, her feet stepped off of the wood and concrete construction.

"... I have to do something, Enzo," Coleen said flatly. "Keep Kimiko company until I get back."

"And for the love of god, DON'T follow me."

Coleen didn't respond to Enzo's shake of the head. The sickly feeling in their stomach plunged yet further.

They hated this in every possible way. They didn't want to have to treat Kimiko like a live grenade. They didn't want to have to worry that letting Coleen a short distance from them was putting her in great danger. It wasn't right; more than that, it was completely and totally fucked up. Sure everything about this was fucked and they'd known that from the start, but this was pushing it into sickening relief. More than Blair suddenly firing off, more than Olivia going out of their sight for a couple seconds and getting shot, more than Cameron dying.

And maybe that just happened to be because they'd met—and trusted—Kimiko before, and nothing had happened. So why was that? Why was it okay then and not now?

Cause they were changing too. And they didn't want to.

Even with the two of them just talking over there, it was—what if something happened? Would it make any difference being over there to being here? Maybe it wouldn't. But being over here definitely wasn't gonna give them an opportunity to help out if it kicked off.

That's what sucked. As torn as they were they couldn't even bring themselves to let it go. Coleen had asked them to stay, so they'd stayed.

And they didn't trust Coleen—Kimiko—themselves enough to be happy with that choice.

Vanessa was dead now too. Someone else they'd met. Right after Cam, sure, but there was another fuck up, there was another let down for Brady and B.B and even Cameron herself. Fuck's sake. Striking out over here, and Coleen was the only one left they could even try to keep that promise with.

Cause you know, over a week deep, the cavalry was still just right around the corner.

They were still just talking. Or more aptly, Coleen was talking and Kimiko was gesturing a little. Maybe things hadn't soured just yet but.

Enzo put a hand across their face, over their glasses.

"C'mon, Enzo," they took the hand away, still there. "C'mon, Goomba..."

And she moved, walked back and then turned towards Enzo completely. No gunshots, no violence. Kimiko was still there. 'Cept there was still a look on Coleen's face, and Enzo knew they didn't like it this time.

Vinny blinked at her.

"I, uh... the fuck? What do you—what do you even mean? What's 'you've got something to do'-? Goom—Coleen! Coleen for fuck's sake, answer me!"

She just kept going.

Coleen gave a weak smile and muttered something to herself as she backed away from Kimiko. Once she had gone far enough she turned and walked over to Enzo saying something before departing. Kimiko watched her go knowing she was never going to see the girl again. Wherever she was going she would die there. She was hesitant and unsure of what she wanted to do and Kimiko knew that at the very end it would be what killed her. She would find whoever she wanted to kill and she would have the chance to kill them but she would hesitate. That would be it.

Enzo was yelling after her, maybe they also realised the same thing as Kimiko did or they didn't like the idea of being left alone with her. Kimiko merely watched as Enzo was abandoned by their travelling companion and perhaps friend. She didn't envy the position Enzo any. It must have been hard to deal with the decision they had been given. They could either wait with her, which based off their body language while Coleen had been speaking to her was not an idea they found appealing in the slightest or they could leave and potentially never see Coleen again.

For Kimiko's part her job was simple; she just had to wait for Enzo to make a decision, even then they were only being motivated by the fact Enzo had treated them like a real person. It had looked like Coleen would do the same but that hadn't been the case. Despite that Kimiko wouldn't stop Enzo if they wanted to leave. She looked at them once more before turning and continuing to lean on the railing of the docks looking out over the ocean.

It would have been easy for her to kill both Coleen and Enzo at any point in their conversation if she had felt like it. She hadn't though. There was no reason to do it. They had been non-threatening, even going out of their way to appear so. Coleen in her mind had risked her life just to talk with her. Kimiko drew the glock and ejected the magazine, counting how many bullets were left. She had taken two lives with the gun since she had taken it from Nancy by force.

She knew when she had left Enzo last that she was going to have kill again. She had killed three more times since then. Once to get a gun, once by accident and once because they had wanted it. At least that was what she told herself.

Finishing her count Kimiko slide the magazine back into place and replaced the gun in her pocket.

Her fingers reached up and gently felt the gash above her eyebrow. It was a clean vertical slice just above the outside edge of her brow. It still stung every so often and she could feel the dried blood around it. She hadn't seen a mirror yet on the island but she was sure she looked horrifying. Blood running down the front and back of her clothes, tired eyes, the cut on her face, her roots were probably coming back through too.

Stupid thing to think about, her appearance but it was better than allowing her mind to wander as she waited for Enzo to make their decision.

Coleen had just up and ditched them.

Coleen had just up and freaking ditched them.

What the fuck!?

Okay, okay, things hadn't been going great necessarily, but what was going right here? This wasn't part of the fricking plan! 'Stick together' wasn't much of a plan, but the beauty of it was that it was pretty fucking hard to fuck that up. All you had to do was not. Leave. Each other. Something to do? Keep Kimiko company? There wasn't anything that Coleen might just be—

Doing.

Oh.

Oh no.

Something she needed to do. Something which she specifically didn't want Enzo to see and equally specifically had been talking to Kimiko about.

They'd made up their mind early about whether or not they were gonna try and get one back for Cameron, and they'd stuck to their guns with that since. With Blair, with Fiyori, and with Alessio. Hurting them wouldn't bring anyone back, no matter how much they might wish it otherwise, no matter how stupid it'd been in the first place. Dead was dead, and that hurt, but more death wasn't the solution.

That was Enzo's mind. Nothing said it was Coleen's too.

Vinny had frozen up as they came to the realisation. Time wasted. Time they hadn't been moving. Coleen had already made distance; they had to hope to god that it wasn't too much for them to catch up on.

"Kimiko—" there were about a million things to say and not a one of them really seemed right. "I gotta stop— I gotta— later!"

They broke into a run.

"COLEEN! DON'T YOU DARE!"

Enzo spluttered out some words and sprinted off after Coleen. She was alone again, it was what she wanted though. The rest of the students on the island didn't care for her or see her as person. She didn't feel any connection to them anymore and knew they would all have to die but the conflict within her was still there deep down.

Truthfully she was still contemplating what home would be like and if it would even still be home if she returned. She doubted it would be.

She ejected the magazine from the glock and inspected the bullets. Still the exact same amount as when she had last checked.

Sighing Kimiko pushed it back into place, raised the gun up and fired.

The shot split the air and the casing span out of the gun before landing perfectly upright by her foot.

Kimiko left it there as she returned the gun to her pocket and walked away.
