Stranded in this Shopping Hell

Open

It's your normal mall food court. Eateries are in place to serve the high brow and the low brow, the extravagant and the money-minding. Pizza, pasta, hamburgers, Oriental, you name it, it's here. A vast sea of tables and chairs sprawls forth from the food court, and it never seems to be empty.

Stranded in this Shopping Hell

((Aaron Hughes continued from Eleutherea))

Aaron did not like the Promenade, in fact, his dislike and disdain for the establishment went beyond the realms of the normal and into pure detestation. It stood for everything that was wrong with American culture and Aaron's generation. It was idiotic commercialism, a place where people came to purchase images instead of displaying any imagination or originality. Worse still, it also catered to preteens. Aaron did not like kids. Hell, he hadn't liked kids when he was one.

Tragically, he was obligated to spend his Sunday afternoon here, all because his parents had gotten it into their heads that he needed some sort of half-baked life lesson. They had decided that he needed new pants, because most of his old ones had holes in them, but rather than just picking them up for him, they'd given him some money and dropped him off at the Promenade, telling him that he'd have to shop for clothes on his own someday, and by someday they meant today, and that they'd come pick him up in six hours. They'd suggested he "make a day of it".

He'd argued and whined and complained the entire way there, and, for once, they'd displayed some backbone and forced him to go through with it. He was sure there was some other reason behind stranding him at the mall for such a long time. They probably planned to force him to search around for good deals or socialize or something, to learn to be thrifty or outgoing. He wasn't having any of it, though. No, he'd gone to the first department store and bought four new pairs of cargo pants. It had taken him twenty minutes. Now he was in the food court, holding a tray on which rested a greasy cheeseburger and fries, wondering how on earth he was going to survive the next five hours. He'd already tried calling his mom to come pick him up, but her phone was off.

He sighed and made his way to a table, sitting down and taking an apathetic bite of the burger. He really was stuck. There was nowhere to go and nothing to do. He resigned himself to his fate. He'd be spending quite a bit of time at the mall today.

But he sure wasn't going to enjoy it.

((Rizzo Vitoria continued from Locked Door; Pants Down ))

Rizzo was in a daze as he walked. He didn't know where he was going until he realised he was in the Food Court. He blinked - why had he come here? Was he hungry?

He sighed and shook his head. Probably - but why eat? He'd been home since leaving the scene of last night's house party, but when he tried to talk to his parents, he'd drawn a blank. If they didn't have time for him anymore, why talk to them? And about a girl... No, he was better off internalising this until it ate away at him and caused a heart attack...

He went to the sub booth and ordered a meatball foot-long and can of coke. He took the tray and wandered to the seating area.

Did anyone actually talk to their parents about girls? Or boys? And what about in the event of his situation? It didn't help that his parents were older than the bible...

He sits down at Aaron's table, opposite him. He didn't even realise he had done it, his gaze looking into thin air and his hands still holding the tray that now rested on the table.

((Debut of Amber Whimsy))

"Hmm, it's kinda dull lately."

Amber had arranged to go shopping with her friends that day; she hadn't gone shopping in weeks, and she'd heard a rumour that a sale was going down that very day!

Sadly for her, those rumours turned out to be false. Whilst she took pride in her ability to find out the details on what's happening around St. Pauls, it was true she still made mistakes on the odd basis.

And to make matters worse, it turned out that all her mates cancelled on her: one's Grandma was in the hospital; one had to write an essay she'd spaced out on; and one had told her she was broke and decided not to come, but in truth she was actually just blowing off Amber out of revenge for spying on her when she was trying to ask out her crush.

It was a pretty disappointing day, overall.

Giving up her plans of finding some good clothing, Amber had decided instead to go to the food court and eat away her sorrows with a tray of nachos. Oh sure, 90% of the time she was supposed to be on a diet to watch her figure, but it was okay to have a bite when things went badly.

Paying for her snack, Amber ended up sitting just across from Aaron's and Rizzo's table, possessing the two of them in her eye sight. Whilst she wasn't deliberately trying to observe the two strangers, she enjoyed the opportunity to have a look at what these two ended up talking about. Who sat on the same table as someone and didn't talk to them, after all?

Casually dipping her snack into the free sauce, the nosy girl nibbled on the end whilst her eyes drifted around, before quickly ending up on the pair in front of her. With any luck, this would end up in some juicy info on people, even if she didn't have a clue who they were!

A meal with a show: exactly what she needed!

Aaron picked up his burger and took another bite. It wasn't even any good. Here he was, eating a crappy burger in a stupid mall surrounded by idiots. He wondered if his day could possibly get worse.

As if summoned by some accidental eldritch incantation, Rizzo appeared and plopped down across from him. Aaron recognized him; he wasn't the best with faces, but he could at least keep up with who was in his grade. Moreover, even with Bayview's large number of interestingly named students, "Rizzo" still stood out. It only took Aaron a couple of seconds to conjure the name.

He looked at Rizzo curiously for a couple of seconds. What on earth would possess the boy to come sit next to Aaron? Was he bored? Did he need something for a class? Was he just here because they happened to share the misfortune of attending Bayview Secondary? Whatever it was, he'd say something soon, and Aaron could give whatever response would end this awkward little encounter the quickest and then go back to being bored and miserable but at least not crowded.

Unfortunately, it soon became evident that Rizzo wasn't going to say anything at all. Aaron mentally cursed his luck, and tried to remember anything he knew about Rizzo. He was pretty sure the boy was neither mute nor retarded, so that ruled out a couple of reasons for his silence. That was about the extent of what Aaron could make of him, though. He couldn't remember if Rizzo was into hard drugs or was cripplingly shy or something like that.

Well, if he is shy, I can handle this pretty easily.

Aaron put his burger down, and then coughed loudly. He followed that up by saying "Oh, excuse me. I didn't notice you there. I didn't mean to offend you by not saying 'hello' and just sitting there eating and ignoring you. I mean, that'd be pretty creepy."

That sounded a lot worse out loud than it had in his head. He wasn't having a very good day, but it wasn't fair to take it out on Rizzo. Quickly covering up his impoliteness, he smiled, half a beat slower than he probably should have, and laughed.

"I'm just kidding. How're you today Rizzo? I didn't recognize you for a little there."

Success. Scene averted. Now Rizzo could give his greetings or whatever and then leave.

"... I mean, that'd be pretty creepy."

Rizzo blinked, looking at the scene in front of him - where did that guy come from? 'Wait, what's creepy...? Did I mutter something? Or someone else...?' he wondered before the guy smiled.

"I'm just kidding. How're you today Rizzo? I didn't recognize you for a little there."

"Huh...?" Rizzo asked, looking down at his tray, then at the other tray on the table. He interrupted this guy's lunch... Aaron, was it?

"Uhh, yeah I'm just... You know, eating..." he shrugged. "Like you... Did I just sit at your table...?"

He regretted saying that instantly - of course he did! 'Who the fuck would sit at a table and just start talking to a guy from school?!' he screamed in his head. This was going to be great for his self esteem... Have sex, get shouted at and become a complete wreck...

Amber smirked as she watched the two guys opposite each other. From the look the guy on the right was giving the other one, it seemed neither of them were that familiar with each other, so why sit with each other? The mystery in the meal was starting to show its features!

As the two sat across from each other for a moment, without saying a word, Amber felt the tension crawl over in her direction; one of them seemed oblivious to the other's presence, whilst the other was trying his hardest to work out why he wasn't paying attention, or at least wondering why, giving him those eyes.

Finally, one put down his burger and spoke up:

"Oh, excuse me. I didn't notice you there. I didn't mean to offend you by not saying 'hello' and just sitting there eating and ignoring you. I mean, that'd be pretty creepy."

She laughed to herself; he seemed a little nervous to Amber, and now he was trying to cover it up with a weak attempt at pretending not to have noticed him, before saying stuff that just sounded weird; he sure didn't look comfortable.

Awkward situations always made for a good laugh.

And for added fun, the little guy seemed to finally notice that he wasn't alone at the table, as he blinked dumbly at his fellow table sitter. Maybe he was distracted, so that's why he didn't notice anything?

Distracted with some juicy story, hopefully!

Her mind began conjuring up all sorts of long-shot gossip as the two continued talking: maybe he was in trouble with the cops, or he was a shoplifter with a coat full of stolen CDs! Or maybe he just found out he's got some terminal illness, and was trying to maintain some sense of normality in his quickly declining life!

Bit of a fetch, that last one.

Now quite excited, Amber took a bite of another nacho, eagerly watching the pair in front of her.

Who knows what she was about to find out!

Rizzo seemed totally out of it, not even catching what Aaron was saying for a few seconds. That actually was for the best. Aaron did his best not to snap at people, but sometimes they were just so stupid. If everyone were as oblivious as Rizzo, things would have been much easier. Actually, it would probably have ended conflict worldwide entirely, as everyone lived in their own little worlds and ignored everything else unless it affected them somehow.

Rizzo made some vague comments, ending by asking whether he'd just sat down at Aaron's table. Was he really that clueless? What the hell was he on?

"That's affirmative," Aaron said, still smiling a little. Then he had an idea. If Rizzo was this out of it, he'd actually probably be an interesting enough person to chat with. At the worst, Aaron could try to remember some of his stumbling speech in case he ever got another D&D campaign going, and at the best, well, Rizzo could maybe listen to him rant some.

"So," Aaron said, "What brings you to the mall today?"

That was a good opening. Now Rizzo would give some stupid answer and then most likely bounce the question back to Aaron, which was the only reason he'd even bothered with it in at all. He didn't care why Rizzo was at the mall; he did, however, feel like explaining his own woes.

"So, What brings you to the mall today?"

Rizzo shrugged, looking down at his food. Like this guy wanted to hear his troubles... Nobody would want to - and one person would kill him if he did give out every detail... It was a secret.

"Dunno..." he shrugged again, looking back at Aaron. "Just a place to go..."

He picked up his sub and took a bite. He didn't feel like eating. He didn't feel like anything. But his body needed food. Hell, he hadn't even taken a caffeine tablet since he got out of that room. The room he lost his virginity in...

"Why're you here?" he asked, crumbs falling from his mouth. He didn't project his voice enough to spray them all over the other guy, luckily. He didn't feel like talking, but he did interrupt this guy's lunch.

The air on that table was definitely heavy: in Amber's opinion, the guy on the right looked to be nervous about this strange person opposite him; meanwhile, the other one was more worried about whatever it was that was on his mind. What developments awaited, she wondered?

Unfortunately, her eavesdropping was interrupted as a large group of people decided to take up seating in the table behind her, their amassed conversations projecting much louder than the two targets of her spying.

Darn it; don't people appreciate it when someone's trying to spy on people any more?

Not one to be denied her story, Amber tried to ignore the noises coming from behind her, and instead focus on her original target; whilst the large group of friends could quite possibly be discussing any number of exciting rumours, it was far more interesting to pay attention to these two shady figures!

Or at least it would be, if she could actually get some of that listening done!

Seeing the noises come out of their mouths without hearing a word they were saying was torture to Amber; further actions were needed!

Sliding over her tray of nachos, Amber took her phone out of her pocket; this was a trick she had learnt whilst watching an old spy film! Flimsily pretending to accidentally drop it on the floor next to her, Amber practically shouted:

"Oh dear, I seem to have dropped my phone!"

Getting up and moving over around the corner of her table, Amber retrieved her deliberately lost mobile, before taking a seat that was practically adjacent to Rizzo. She even leaned over to the two, quite obviously, just to be sure she could hear the details.

Now, let the show recommence!

Rizzo gave the expected noncommittal stock answer, followed by the expected reciprocating question, and Aaron smiled. He was good at judging people. Now Rizzo would listen to him for a bit to be polite, at the very least. Of course, Rizzo was not the optimal audience; he was dribbling crumbs and still seemed distracted or high, but one had to make do with what one had at times.

"Well," Aaron began, "my family decided that I needed new clothes, because my old ones are deficient or something, so they abandoned me at the mall. In all their unquestionable wisdom, they decided that I was indecisive enough to need to spend six hours looking."

Some girl dropped her phone, then picked it back up, wandering a little closer to their table. She looked almost familiar, like Aaron had seen her before, but that really didn't mean anything. The female teenage population of Saint Paul was largely interchangeable. The temporary amusement evoked by her clumsiness past, Aaron returned to his story without skipping a beat.

"So, I finished shopping after half an hour, but now I can't reach them on the phone. I'm stuck here with absolutely nothing to do. I really hate how stupid my parents can be sometimes. I mean, who needs six hours to shop for clothes? It's not like I weigh five hundred pounds and need to see a special tailor or something. I'm not picky. I don't need to dress in the height of fashion. I get all my shirts online, anyways."

He was rambling now, he realized, and took a break to compose himself and think through his next few sentences under the cover of taking another bite from his hamburger. Besides, that would also give Rizzo a token chance to say something, if he was so inclined.

Rizzo only half-listened to Aaron speak - something about clothes. He didn't even notice the girl drop her phone and move closer to them.

His mind was still on Janet. She made him feel amazing - so wanted and attractive... Then took it away with screams and accusations... The best night of his life followed by the worst morning.

He noticed Aaron had finished talking to eat something, so he nodded and half-smiled as he processed his words.

"Maybe they're fucking." he offered. "Is it their anniversary? Or one of their birthdays?"

It made sense to him, and the mental images weren't disgusting even when considering his own parents in bed. Sex was a loving, wonderful thing. Like it was for him and Janet... Until she sobered up...

The perfect entry.

The Slip 'n Sly: A guide for amateurs

The first step to successfully pulling off this infiltration maneuver is to observe your tagets; if there's more than six, then this technique is probably not needed: they'll be far too busy talking to each other to notice you!

Secondly, make a conveniently placed distraction for use in step three; dropping something small, like that phone we just saw, is an excellent example. Whilst you're doing so, be sure to be covert.

Step three: Loudly draw attention to yourself whilst interacting with your distraction. Now kids, this may seem counter-productive, but did you know that studies have shown people are eighty per cent more interested in things that they don't spot by chance?

If all of those steps are successfully completed, you should be able to safely approach your target within earshot, and eavesdrop away!

It may have made her look like an idiot, but that didn't stop her from slipping in unnoticed!

Whilst she ran over her memorised plan in her head with a side order of ego indulgence, despite already having successfully pulled it off, the salsa dripping off her nacho and on to her leg (staining her favourite pair of jeans; damn it!) reminded her that she was there on a mission!

"Maybe they're fucking. Is it their anniversary? Or one of their birthdays?"

A huge grin spread across Amber's face.

Pay dirt!

This required some extra records! Reaching down into her pocket, she pulled out her ever reliable notebook and pencil, flipping over past her incessant doodles to a blank page.

Wild Couple Engages in Rampant Sex Romp!

Catchy, but a bit technical for her tastes. What else?

Wild Couple Engages in Rampant Sex Romp!
Sexy Hijinks at Saint Pauls!

Oh sure, if she wanted to make it sound tamer than a circus lion.

Wild Couple Engages in Rampant Sex Romp!
Sexy Hijinks at Saint Pauls!
Who's Wearing the Pants at the Shopping Center?

...what the hell was that meant to mean?

Hrm, what was the headline she sought...

Aha!

Unstoppable Orgy At Bayview Mall!

Perfect! Just the title to attract readers for her blog! Or at least it would be, if she hadn't been reported already and had it taken down. First amendment her foot!

But that wouldn't matter at all if she couldn't get herself some more details! Further listening was in order!

Leaning back in her chair again, Amber kept her pencil at the ready to jot down any more incriminating notes for her personal exploits whilst listening in on her two targets.

Keep it coming, fellas!

Rizzo didn't seem to pay any attention at all to Aaron's complaints, until, all of a sudden, he dropped a nice little suggestion that Aaron's parents had gotten him out of the way for personal reasons. That was absolutely disgusting, and, worse, probably correct. He couldn't ever admit that, though, not out loud, not in his head. No. That was one image he absolutely did not need.

"No," he said, "I don't think that's it at all. I... They weren't going home. They were going furniture shopping."

It wasn't one of his best lies, not by a long shot. Then again, he could probably have claimed to be an extraterrestrial trying to learn about human nesting habits without causing Rizzo to bat an eye. What on earth was wrong with him?

It wasn't any of Aaron's business, but that didn't really matter to him at all. He was curious. He just had to figure out some way to spin the question, some way to work it into the conversation naturally. After all, he couldn't just drop it in with no warning; that would immediately put Rizzo on the defensive, maybe make him believe Aaron was some goody-two-shoes trying to get him busted or something.

One thing was sure: whatever was wrong with Rizzo probably wasn't pot, since he didn't smell like smoke. It could have been some other drug, though. Aaron didn't know very much about drugs at all.

Then it clicked. He just had to get Rizzo talking a little more, or, better, get him to just sit weirdly like he had been. Then he could pretend to notice something wrong with him and feign concern. That would probably make him seem more trustworthy, maybe even a potential confidante. Then he'd know, and he could leave the food court for somewhere not full of freaks.

"So, how's school been?" he asked. That was the easiest topic possible to get a fellow student talking about. Complaining about teachers was the one thing practically everyone at Bayview had in common. If Rizzo didn't say anything big in response, it would be a perfect opening.

"Yeah..." Rizzo nodded before shaking his head and shrugging. "I dunno... Normal? Shitty? Maybe?"

He hadn't noticed that Aaron seemed more interested than before - he still wasn't paying attention. He took a bite of his sub and sighed through his nose. Things were worse than this time yesterday. At least then, he was in a dumpster out the back of the mall. Now he was heartbroken, had been threatened by a drug addict and was ordered by the hot,and sexy cheerleader he lost his virginity to, to not talk about it!

"Uhm, hows school been for you?" he asked, realising he had drifted off there. His mouth was still full of part-chewed food, so this time crubs did spray forth. He actually noticed, this time, and grabbed his napkin to clean up.

'These meatballs have no taste...' he thought, as a reason he simply forgot he had food in his mouth.

Amber had let her imagination get the better of her: rather than write down what she knew about the scoop, she had done as she occasionally did and let the scoop write itself. She had already spun in a weave about failing marriages and uninhibited imaginative sex in order to keep the family together so as to not cause their mentally unstable son a breakdown when she actually decided to start listening again.

"They weren't going home. They were going furniture shopping."

It was even juicier! Not only was there some kinky sex going on with this guy's parents, they were doing it in public! If she could find out which store they had gone to, perhaps she could even some photographic evidence!

Actually, that thought was kinda gross.

Taking her pencil away from her stream of notes, Amber continued her eavesdropping. However, it was no use: she needed to know some names if she wanted a good article! Her experience had led her to know no-one gave a rats ass about 'anonymous couple', they need some names dropped! Sure, it had led to more than one controversy over her articles, but it was a noble sacrifice!

Time for another investigative technique!

As the two blathered on something about school, Amber took it upon herself to reach into her phone, and open up the settings; the trick with this one was to make it seem like you were being called from somewhere else, so as to give you an excuse to look around!

One fake call later, her maneuver was initiated.

"Hey Jen! Yeah, I know. I'm in the food court, where are you?" It was at this point she began to look around, making eye contact with the faces of Rizzo and Aaron after a few seconds of glancing around, and even throwing in a look of fake surprise for good measure. "Oh really? That suck. Okay, I'll see you later!"

Putting her phone away in her pocket, after hanging up from the one sided conversation, she turned around so that she may as well have been sitting at their table.

"Hey guys! Long time no see! I didn't realise you were sitting right there!" A fake laugh accompanied her attempt to put herself on the same base as them; if she could make them try to remember her name, then they'd have made an approach at her, and she'd be in the perfect spot to begin infiltration.
