Sebastian "Seb" Conway

#1

Post by ifnotwinter† »

Name: Sebastian "Seb" Conway
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Grade: 12th
School: George Hunter High School
Hobbies and Interests: Drawing, photography, hiking/camping, folk music

Appearance: At 5'11" and approximately 145lbs Sebastian is slightly built, weight distributed evenly throughout his long torso and slender limbs. His arms are long and completed with slender hands and long fingers; a silver ring in the shape of a feather adorns his right index finger. His calves and thighs are lightly muscled, his knees knobbly. His skin is pale and during the sunny months he's often pink with sunburn but rarely tans.

His face is narrow with a prominent chin and high cheekbones, his nose long, straight, and thin. Large hazel eyes with naturally arched eyebrows give him a look of perpetual slight surprise, while his small mouth and plump lips are normally found curled in a faint smile. His teeth are slightly crooked with one top incisor overlapping its neighbor, but otherwise are white and undamaged. Unruly brown hair with a hint of curl at the edges falls thickly to the nape of his neck and flops over his forehead with bangs that almost brush his eyes, most often swept to the side but with a tendency to revert to their normal straight position. A short scruff of brown facial hair covers his chin, neck, and prominent Adam's apple. His pale skin is very clear with only the rarest pimple or blemish, usually on his neck or chin.

Sebastian favors casual dress shirts in muted tones and khaki slacks while at school, but outside of school he prefers T-shirts with bright colors and amusing slogans and denim jeans or jean-shorts. He is rarely cold and only wears his jacket, an old black bomber, when he absolutely must. For shoes he favors a pair of black sneakers or, in the warmer months, a pair of leather sandals. He wears a green and brown paracord bracelet on his left wrist at all times.

Biography: Sebastian Conway was born the third child and first and only son to Marsha and Emmett Conway, both realtors working in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The couple's first two children, Alicia and Jillian, were six and four respectively at the time of his birth, and both were excited to have a new baby brother.

Sebastian's childhood was fairly unremarkable. His family was firmly middle-class and while there were occasional unexpected financial expenditures, they lived comfortably for the most part with little concern for money. Despite the four-year age difference he was close to Jillian from a very early age and the two frequently enjoyed playing make-believe together. The family's annual summer camping trip was also a highlight of his young life, especially the Junior Ranger program which, after seeing his older sisters participate, he begged to be enrolled in as soon as he was old enough. He loved the outdoors and the rustic fun of camping, spending most of his time exploring the woods or swimming in the lake.

Once in school, Seb proved himself to be a bright and capable student. He enjoyed learning and was more than happy to participate in group projects and discussions, although he found taking leadership roles difficult and prefered to be instructed than to be the one doing the instructing. With his quiet but friendly attitude and frequent sunny smiles he made friends easily and his relaxed approach to life made him popular with his teachers, who rarely saw him upset or disruptive in the classroom. His passive approach to life and willingness to say yes to most things in order to avoid potential conflict gave him a wide and varied circle of friends and acquaintances, although he was only really close with one or two.

Both of his sisters participated in extracurricular sports -- Jillian in volleyball and Alicia in soccer -- and as such his parents encouraged Seb to find a sport of his own, but he was never particularly interested. PE was his least favourite class and although he participated well enough to achieve a passing grade, he disliked the feeling of competition especially with regards to team sports and preferred working out or running alone, feeling better if he was competing against no one but himself. His favourite outdoor activity was to go on hikes with his father in Prentice Cooper State Forest or on the Cumberland trail. Each time that he was able to go a little farther or feel a little less winded felt like a victory to him and he frequently begged for outings or to camp more often.

In middle school, Seb found that he had a natural aptitude for art although he struggled somewhat with creativity and composition, preferring to draw from reference photographs. Drawing quickly became his favourite hobby and he began to carry a sketchbook around in his schoolbag or when out, determined to improve his skills. Hiking and exploring nature continued to be a big part of his life that he now shared with sister Jillian, who had come to love it as well and took him out frequently on hikes or short camping trips. The outings gave him a chance to practice sketching nature and wildlife and his skills in both soon improved, with a particular strength for sketching animals.

In freshman year he joined George Hunter High's track and field team. He did well but quit shortly before the end of second semester as he still strongly disliked the idea of competing against other people. Never a sore loser, he struggled with the often hyper-competitive attitudes of his teammates and preferred to get his exercise hiking or walking and running on his own, where there was no pressure to be the best or beat anyone but himself. His parents were somewhat disappointed as they felt that school sports were an essential part of education, but for once Seb stuck to his guns and firmly refused. Although this did lead to some small conflict between his parents and him, they eventually agreed that he was clearly much happier outside of sports and stopped badgering him to try out for various teams.

Then, the summer before sophomore year, his parents announced that they were getting a divorce. This came decidedly out of left field for Seb and his sisters, who rarely if ever saw their parents fight. Both Marsha and Emmett had been working hard to keep their marital discord under wraps and unknown by their children but rather than helping, it simply made it harder. Almost overnight Seb found his trust in his parents broken and started questioning what else they might have been dishonest about with him in their life as well as whether he might have contributed to the divorce in some way. Although his parents assured their children that it was not their fault, Seb struggled to trust them and began to internalize the idea that their conflict over sports might somehow have contributed to the fractured relationship.

Seb found the divorce stressful and upsetting; his parents refused to talk about it after the announcement and instead tried to pretend everything was normal which led to a significant disconnect between them. He began spending more time away from the house and with his friends, nervous that if his parents had managed to keep their issues a secret for so long that other people could do so too and might be harbouring resentment or ill-will towards him. His attitude became even more laid-back as he struggled to avoid offending or bothering anyone at any time, often changing his stance or opinions multiple times throughout the day depending on who he was talking to. It didn't take long for his friends to realize that he was being less than sincere and many began to pull away from him, ironically seeing him as two-faced or untrustworthy.

It was around this time that Seb discovered his love of the folk music genre. He happened upon a radio station that played mainly folk music hits and had his first encounter with the music of Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, a folk music duo. He instantly fell in love with the quick fiddles, smooth guitars, and beautiful lyrics which helped him to escape mentally when life became too much as well as acting as inspiration for his artwork.

By the time Seb entered junior year his parents had separate houses and he was shifting between the two frequently; living at his mother's house with Jillian during the week and at his father's apartment during the weekends, Alicia having since moved into her own place. He saw himself as something of a peacekeeper and tried his hardest to prevent any conflict in the two households, going out of his way to soothe and flatter his parents to try and keep them in good moods if he had any feeling that they were upset. He had slowly stopped being quite as appeasing with his friends at school but the damage had been done, and what had once been an extremely wide circle had dwindled to a couple of close friends. He spent more and more of his time drawing in his room or out hiking, and had begun to practice photography as a way of developing his creative composition skills as well as getting reference photographs that represented what he saw in his mind but struggled to put down on the page.

Around that time his friends began to become more and more sexually and romantically active. This was difficult for Seb, who had never felt romantic feelings or sexual attraction for anyone (although he had strong feelings of love for family and friends). For a time he wondered if he might be gay, only to dismiss this after realizing he felt the same way towards both women and men. Initially he tried to hide it and even dated a girl for a few weeks, but found himself unable to maintain a relationship he had no real interest in. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as his honest confession to the girl about his lack of feelings led to her introducing him to the idea that he might be an aromantic asexual. After further research on his own Seb concluded that the girl was right, and felt much better knowing that he wasn't broken as he had intitially felt. However, he decided against telling his parents, concerned that they would react badly and cause more conflict within his life.

Now in senior year Seb continues to live part-time with both parents and Jillian, who lives only with his mother. He has developed a reputation for being a passive, relaxed, easy-going kind of guy who never gets into conflict or ruffles any feathers and has a generally good relationship with most of his classmates, although some remember when he could be more two-faced. Underneath his relaxed exterior, however, he still struggles with trusting others and often feels anxious about his status with friends, wondering if perhaps there are things they aren't telling him or that they are lying about their feelings. Although a few friends know that he is aromantic asexual it is not common knowledge and he hasn't yet come out to his parents, too nervous about how they might react.

His grades are mostly Bs with the occasional A and he continues to develop his photography skills; although his camera is just a small point-and-shoot as he can't afford a nicer one he has still managed to improve. His artwork continues to be a source of relaxation although he's shy about showing it off, suspicious that people might praise it without actually meaning it. He still hikes frequently with Jillian and occasionally with his father, and is participating in this year's Tennessee State Parks Adventure Challenge. He continues to enjoy folk music as his genre of choice, with tastes ranging from Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen to Mumford & Sons, Feist, and Of Monsters and Men, although his favorite artist remains Tracy Grammer. After high school he plans to pursue a bachelor's in environmental studies and potentially become a park ranger.

Advantages: Seb is physically fit with good endurance from his love of hiking, and his frequent camping expeditions as a child and teenager have given him some outdoor skills such as fire-building and keeping safe. He is generally well-liked and unlikely to be a target.
Disadvantages: Seb has difficulty trusting others. He has a strong dislike of any kind of conflict and may not be emotionally able to deal with the situation.
