and i know i need to feel relief

The footbridge is a raised section of boardwalk in a squared 'n' shape, that goes out into the river, running parallel to it before returning to shore. The footbridge is wide enough for bikes and people to comfortably walk side by side and there are benches at regular intervals allowing people to sit and enjoy the view.

It was a real cold night- by the river in January, who would have figured, right? But somehow the winter chill wasn't getting to her. Her wardrobe wasn't helping- Ivy was not one to make sacrifices of style on the altar of comfort, and the miniskirt/thigh-high combo she had gone with was hardly seasonal. Her fluffy lavender cape and pink sheepskin boots were her only concessions, and it's not like they weren't cute as fuck. She was starting to sweat a little under it, though.

Being three drinks down probably had something to do with it.

>> IVY LANGLEY: START

This wasn't normal Tuesday night behavior.

Well, the drinks were, for Ivy. Three glasses of wine was pretty standard- enough that there was a warmth burning in stomach, enough that it was just a bit difficult to keep the music in her ears from escaping her lips, but not enough that she wasn't in near-perfect control of her actions. No, the weird thing was being here. On the riverfront. Alone. After dark.

Some nights just drove her absolutely fucking stir-crazy. Long as her father wasn't home her house was quiet as the grave, unless Adrienne was tripping down another flight of stairs or some shit. Usually on weeknights she made plans, or had lessons, or had cheer practice, or something, but tonight there was not a goddamn thing to do, and though she'd settled in for a quiet night at home, after a few drinks she just wanted to move. She'd also had a powerful urge to just group text everyone she knew and see if someone, anyone was free, but that whole "near-perfect control of her actions" thing was more than enough to prevent her from doing something so utterly humiliating.

She couldn't resist a few texts, though.

Her alcohol-fueled wanderlust had taken her somewhere pretty, at least, if not particularly interesting. The sun had just gone down, and the last rays of light hadn't quite faded from the horizon; it was a romantic view, she thought, if only Bret hadn't also been busy with something or other. Whatever. His loss. Her earphones pumped a steady stream of Lana Del Rey into her ears as she found an empty bench to sit on. There weren't many people around, unsurprising considering the chill, and Ivy smiled to herself as she sunk into the music.

"Near-perfect control" wasn't quite perfect enough to keep herself from singing, though it was at least enough to keep her voice low.

((Lukas Nielson continued from Future Loves Me))

It didn't take much convincing to be allowed outside at night. After reassuring his mom that he'd make sure to stay safe, Lukas beelined towards the riverfront. The place had become a frequent haunt for him, both during the day and night. During the day, he would casually observe people as they went about their daily lives and at night, he'd appreciate the beauty of the grass and waters. The day brought forth new ideas, the night was a time to meditate on said ideas and while the night was chilly, it was one of the rare times where the beauty of the riverfront wasn't lost to the throngs of people who populated it during the day.

Lukas's apparel prioritized function over form, with a black jumper and dark chinos being engulfed in a thick brown jacket that reached to the ground. A maroon scarf casually tossed around his neck, Lukas braved the evening weather, a small bag with his journal and stationeries slung around his back while his hands were tucked into the jacket pockets. It wasn't appealing, but it certainly kept him warm during the harsh January evenings. There was still some time before he wanted to present the idea he had in math class and he wanted to make sure he worked out all the details before he was comfortable.

It looked like he was lucky enough to catch the sun just as it was about to finish setting. There was something about how the lights danced across the river that always captivated Lukas. It was as if he was able to catch a glimpse of the last little bits of magic from the day before it was eventually replaced by the night. It was certainly enough to set his heart at ease and he fondly remembered many nights where he would just sit and watch the day go by whether alone or with his family.

He was snapped out of his brief reverie by the garish sight of a figure on the bench. The fact that someone was there was enough for them to become a significant presence for him, especially during this time of year. He would've thought it was an illusion, if not for the bright colours that stood out against the darkness of the evening. After taking a few steps closer, the identity of the figure became clear.

Ivy.

A groan quickly escaped from his mouth. Why the hell was she here of all places? He almost immediately turned around and made his way back home before he stopped himself. Something was wrong. Her clothing hardly suited the weather and her general demeanour was completely different to the one she had at George Hunter.

It would've been so easy for him to have just pretended he never saw her and just went back home. Ivy never treated him well and she was a toxic plague of gossip and bitterness wherever she went. In fact, some would say that it would've been justified for him to just leave her to freeze outside. At the back of his mind, he knew he couldn't do that. Even though Ivy was a complete, unapologetic bitch, Lukas couldn't just leave her there on her own in the harsh January night. Though he knew he was going to loathe every second of it, Lukas was compelled to help her.

His first steps towards her were tentative, gauging the atmosphere as he approached Ivy. When he heard Ivy's singing, Lukas felt a chill rush through him, colder than the winter air around them.

Something was definitely wrong.

She certainly seemed to be lost in her own little world. Though he briefly toyed with the idea of just heading home now and potentially avoiding the wrath of an angry Ivy, he was already committed to following this through. Against his better judgment, he continued walking until he stood just beside Ivy.

"Hey. Umm, are you ok, Ivy?"

His voice was uneasy. Well, it would be considering he was trying to talk to one of his main tormentors. He didn't really know what else to do but stand awkwardly waiting for a response. From someone who hated his guts.

Lukas, why do you do this to yourself?

((Oh shit it's Wyatt Carter continued from the computer labs))

Man, sometimes his brother was such an idiot.

Ivy wasn't exactly an easy girlfriend to get. Well, okay, she was easy in at least one sense but it wasn't like a girl like her could go out with just anybody. And sure, she could be a little high maintenance, a little bitchy, but not having a personality of sunshine and daisies tended to be balanced out by her bod. Turns out being a fine, fiiine piece of ass was worth being a bitch every now and then.

So, then, what was Bret doing? Well he knew what he WASN'T doing... he wasn't willing to get his ass outside to go see anybody. Something about a lot of homework, responsibilities, that shit went right over Wyatt's head. They weren't going to be 18 and in high school forever, and Wyatt often found himself wishing that they were both on the same page regarding having just a little bit of fun.

Bret also wasn't keeping tabs on his brother. Either he didn't notice his twin reading over his shoulder, or he just didn't give a shit. It was that stunning lack of motivation that planted the idea in the younger, stronger, and dare he say more handsome Carter twin's head to go and give Ivy some much needed company. That's what good siblings did, after all, clean up after your fucking mistakes. Of course, finding Ivy wasn't really a guarantee, but Wyatt had a pretty good idea about all her particular haunts. Either he'd get lucky on the first couple of his guesses, or... eh, he'd probably just give up and go buy a smoothie or something. The little things in life, you know?

Much to his pleasure, though, it seemed that he had guessed right. Even in the dullest of lights that illuminated the footbridges, Ivy's reddish-pink hair made her stand out in a crowd. There wasn't really a crowd out tonight, but it still made her easy to pick out from a distance. Wyatt wasn't normally one for false hair colors, but he had to admit, Ivy really rocked it. There was no shame in also admitting he'd thought about pulling that hair while going to town on her. No guarantee through personal experience that she'd actually like that but if he remembered correctly from conversations with Bret (prying information out of him under duress but it still counts!), she was a total freak about that sort of thing.

Speaking of company... ugh. And speaking of freaks, it looked like somebody else had decided to approach her this fine evening. The little creeper hanging around Ivy -- Wyatt knew his name was Lukas but he literally never called him that -- he couldn't have come out together with Ivy. He wasn't the sort of kid Ivy would hang around with, not willingly. Well them... who better to save the day than himself?

"Ives!" Wyatt called with a jerk of the chin, stuffing one hand in his wallet-side pocket and letting the other arm swing as he approached. She looked nice, like usual, but she was dressed for the middle of the day and here it was, freezing cold below 50 degrees and in the dead of night. He wasn't really one to puss out about this sort of thing, and even he decided to wear a Carhartt hooded sweater over his lucky chartreuse workout tank. Maybe she'd benefit from him giving her his sweater... ha. THAT would be a fun explanation to his brother, and probably another shoving match. Bring it on, Wyatt thought, approaching Ivy and AssSpank McBallgag over here. He gave all of his attention to the former. "Aren't you fuckin' cold? Shit. 'Choo doin' out here?"

Ivy was just sober enough to realize her drunk realizations probably weren't reliable, but, like, didn't her voice kind of sound better like this? Not that her voice needed any improving, but the slight slur tugging on her words was kind of attractive in a weird way. Very Amy Winehouse. The barest hint of the chill that she could still feel seemed to fade with the last rays of the sun as she settled into the dark, and some part of her was aware that that third drink, as it often did, was hitting her a little late. Whatever, though! It was fine. Great, in fact.

The bench was just high up enough that her feet didn't quite touch the ground. She swung her legs back and forth childishly.

She almost didn't notice that she wasn't alone.

There was a figure approaching, and sure, it was dark, and sure she had no real way of defending herself, but she was feeling some real kind of invincible right now, so who cared, really? She still looked, though, since odds were real good that they were someone she knew. Maybe Myley actually came to rescue her- but no, this guy was tall. And vaguely familiar? She squinted at him in the dark.

Wait, what the fuck?

The static in Ivy's brain didn't clear enough to put two and two together until he was literally speaking to her. Lukas. Nielson, she clarified to herself, because there were like twelve Lu(k/c)ases at George Hunter, only one of which would've been a potentially welcome sight, and this one sure as fuck wasn't him. Her mind flipped through stored files. Nielson was the one with the porn mom, right? Yeah, definitely. Gross. Way gross. Why the fuck was he talking to her? "Are you ok?" Like, why the fuck would he care? Ivy idly wondered if her expression was displaying an adequate amount of incredulity as she stared blankly back at him, too confused and too intoxicated to come up with a witty response.

Then she heard another voice, one significantly more familiar. For a passing romantic moment she thought maybe, just maybe Bret had dropped whatever the fuck he was doing and come to find her (had she told him where she was? the things she did on the way here were increasingly blurry), but that daydream only lasted as long as it took to look past Lukas and spot the approaching and overwhelming figure of Wyatt. And sure, she was a touch disappointed, because she was suddenly very much in a very particular mood that she technically shouldn't be taking out on anyone not named Bret Carter. But there were plenty of good things about Wyatt being here. At least one of which was his ability to pick Lukas up and dunk him directly into the river. That would be ideal. And hilarious.

"Hiii, Wyatt," Ivy said sweetly, eyelashes aflutter. God, she was hopeless. Also, she was slurring a little more than she'd expected. She'd only had three drinks, right? ... Had she ate dinner?

"It's not thaaat cold. Pretty... pretty warm where I'm sitting, actually. What are you doing here? You're not one for random walks on the waterfront." Okay, cool. She had her voice under control, mostly. She glanced back at Lukas as the pieces clicked together in her head.

"And you. Lukas. Right? Question. When people call you a motherfucker... does it piss you off? Or get you hard?"

It didn't take long for Lukas to regret going anywhere near Ivy. The incredulous look she gave inspired no confidence in his actions. Nor was the arrival of Wyatt. He instinctually moved out of Wyatt's way so that he could approach her, knowing that it'd probably be a death sentence if he got anywhere near him. Afterwards, he just stood there, hoping that maybe if he stood still for long enough he'd just fade into the background and they'd completely forget his existence.

He was starting to feel real awkward now. Like he'd walked into the wrong classroom. At least Wyatt didn't acknowledge his existence, more focused on checking on Ivy for similar reasons that he did. It was interesting to see a side of Wyatt that wasn't awful, though he wouldn't be surprised to find out if his motivations for finding her were not entirely altruistic. As long as Wyatt's attention was more focused on Ivy than it was trying to make his life miserable, he was happy. Or well, happy may not be the word for this situation. Relieved was more appropriate.

Ivy really seemed to be out of it, probably drunk knowing her. Who gets drunk on a Tuesday night? He really shouldn't be judging Ivy during this moment of vulnerability. At the same time though, he could feel the bile of disgust bubbling in his throat as Ivy gave puppy eyes to her boyfriend's brother. He strongly doubted Ivy had any idea what a polygamous relationship was, let alone think about practising one. Plus, there were so many better guys in their school than the roided out numbskull. Then again, there was something to be said about Ivy being able to find attraction in something so putrid.

And then there was the bombshell that forced Lukas back into the conversation. And here he was hoping that they'd just focus on each other and he'd be able to slip out of the conversation. A huff escaped his nostrils as Ivy's words stung him. Goddammit, that was a good zinger. Ivy was always a maverick of insults and even in her inebriated state, she was still able to deliver them just as well as she would at school. Though he could feel the anger and hurt concocting inside him, he took deep breaths and took a moment. He'd been on the receiving end of so many from Ivy, Wyatt, and that posse that he knew better than to give them the reaction that they want. It didn't make ignoring those feelings any easier.

"Look, all I wanted to do was check that Ivy was ok. It's freezing cold plus she was alone and didn't really look ready to brave the weather."

At this point, Lukas just wanted to go home. There was no way he was going to get anything productive down so long as Ivy and Wyatt were polluting the riverfront. It was becoming clear that he made a big mistake going anywhere near Ivy, especially since Wyatt was there to look after her. At this point, all he would be was a punching bag for the pair and he wasn't going to be a victim tonight.

"Now that you're here, I think I'll be going now. Hope you feel better tomorrow Ivy."

When they go low, we go high.

That's how you're gonna get through this.

"Holy shit, it's Bondage Kid!" Wyatt blurted out in his approach, loudly booming over and mostly brushing aside everything Lukas had to say to him. Just as in school as in life, Bondage Kid was best tucked away into a little societal corner and neither spoken to nor heard from. The muscle-headed boy, who would probably have no issues affirming his identity as a total beefcake, leered down at Lukas who, if retroactive hearing was working properly, seemed to be tucking his tail and running. Such a scene wouldn't be totally out of place in a nature documentary, with an omega backing away when knowingly in the presence of an alpha. Ha. At least some people knew their place around here.

"Ives, Ives... you can't be askin' him that question. He'll pop a boner and then we're ALL awkward," Wyatt said with a cruel laughing note to his words. "It's bad enough he already smells like lube and the back room of a Mapco. Hey, Bondage Kid!" Wyatt finally addressed Lukas, using the only name Wyatt ever cared to refer to or think of him as. "You're not wearing the buttplug your mom got you for Christmas in public, are you?"

He didn't wait for a response before pulling his camo baseball cap off his head and sticking the back of the band between his teeth. Raising his arms over his head, Wyatt began to pull his hooded sweatshirt off of his body. The moment he started, air rushed up and hit his lower back... damn it, right in the sweaty part of the small of his back where the cloth of his tank was sticking to his skin, too. This was a mistake, but it wasn't like he could go back on his undressing actions without looking like a total asshat. The shirt finally removed itself from his bulky body, coming up over his broad shoulders and head. Jerking his head back and freeing the cap that was still in his mouth, he sloughed the thick fabric down off his wrists and tossed the bundle to Ivy.

"Here. Like I said, you gotta be fuckin' freezing out here." He offered Ivy a smile. Yup, she was definitely drunk, had a few. Was she fighting with his bro right now? Wyatt worked over the possibility through a clenched jaw. That'd make a lot of sense, actually, seeing as he was apparently too busy to come see her himself, plus those messages that he snuck a peek at seemed kinda aggressive. On the other hand, Ivy was kind of aggressive. All four feet of her. It's always the tiny ones who can suck dick like a hoover vacuum, wasn't it?

Their walls at home were way too thin, honestly. The shit he heard when Ivy came over to play.

Feeling satisfied to have taken care of #JustDrunkWhiteGirlProblems, Wyatt turned his shoulders and feet square with Lukas and took a few steps, letting his face turn last. "Hey, hey. That was awfully good of you, checking on a lady like that."

Going somewhere?

Yeah. Right.

There was this really persistent nagging voice in the back of Ivy's head reminding her of a number of rather important facts. Namely, that she had absolutely forgotten to eat dinner and in fact had totally ignored the call that food was ready in favor of sulking in her room with her bottle of Merlot. Also, she was going to be hungover as fuck the next morning. Also, she wasn't entirely sure how she was supposed to get home from here? But these, the bulk of her thoughts reminded that voice, were problems for Future Ivy. Present Ivy had more important things to consider, like the complete obliteration of Lukas Nielson.

"Wyaaaatt," she drawled, as that nagging voice pointed out how rapidly she was losing control over how she sounded. "Don't ask questions y'don't want an answer to. M'sure he's waaaay too happy t'share."

And then a bundle of fabric fell into her hands, which was actually not a possibility she'd considered.

Ivy looked up at Wyatt in genuine surprise. Sure, she knew he wasn't the complete asshole most of the school thought of him as- she'd spent enough time around both of the Carter boys to catch at least a glimpse of the fabled Soft Side. Moreso Bret than Wyatt, she mused, but it was always easier to see that part of a boy once you'd fucked the energy out of them. God, was Bret mad at her? She hadn't thought she'd been, like, overtly bitchy when he'd turned her down for the evening. Just a touch of healthy passive-aggression. Totally normal stuff that she could brush off with an "oh I was drinking" and a kiss the next day. But if he was actually mad at her? Like, not that she didn't have other options lined up if worst came to worst, but...

Where the hell had she been going with this? Oh, right, sweatshirt.

It was huge- seriously huge, like Ivy was fairly certain three of her would fit inside- and warm, and smelled like Wyatt. She didn't put it on (she was still half-warm from the alcohol, plus there would need to be way more of a real threat of frostbite before she'd willingly compromise her look, plus she was pretty sure she'd drown in it), but she pulled it up to her neck like a blanket instead.

Another wave of warmth ran through her. It was nice. Wyatt was nice. She was not entirely sure that was a thought anyone else had ever had.

She turned to watch as Wyatt turned to square off with Lukas. Who was also kind of cute, in a weedy kind of way? God, she must be really drunk. Also evidence of her level of intoxication was the incredibly strong urge to reach out and pull Wyatt back to her, which she was just barely sober enough to recognize as a really bad idea. Instead she took out her frustration on her phone, managing to steer herself away from Bret's number.

Lukas had a thoroughly unimpressed look in response to Wyatt's tirades. Not because they didn't hurt. Lukas never enjoyed being slung with insults about him or his mother. It was that he'd heard it a billion times. You'd think that he'd have more content to go off of, but he always stuck to the same checkbox of personal attacks. Bondage, check. Something about sex toys, check. Wow, how amazing. Bet no one's thought of that before. He expected nothing more from the guy who made more muscles than brain cells.

He found himself surprised at just how terrible Ivy and Wyatt could be. Lukas could understand why they did these things at school. They had reputations to protect and he knew his mother's former occupation wasn't getting him in the upper rungs of the social ladder anytime soon. The fact was, he and Ivy were still treating him like shit, still acting like they did in school, even though it was literally just the three of them with not another soul in the area. It begged the question of whether it was anything he had done wrong to inspire such vitriol. Was it the way he dressed? The way he acted? He didn't think he'd done anything recently to garner such a visceral reaction from the pair.

And it looked like they were going to end up a pair by the end of this evening. Why anyone would willingly want to have anything to do with Wyatt's disgusting clothing, Lukas would never know. A part of him would almost prefer to freeze to death than smell Wyatt's sweat clinging to his clothes. Even with that, however, he still couldn't help but contrast their treatment of each other to their treatment of him. It was a light switch. At one moment, they'd be cruelly insulting him and trying to pick him apart and the next would show a semblance of normality and kindness to one another. It reinforced the thought at the back of his mind that it was his fault for some strange, twisted reason that he didn't really understand or quantify.

And that sucked.

As easy as it would've been to just contribute it to their generally toxic personalities, Lukas felt like life couldn't be that simple. He had evidence right here and now that Wyatt was capable of not being a total dick. That had to mean something. Maybe, deep deep down inside Wyatt's rotten heart there was something good there. It was only a maybe, though. He didn't want to get too ahead of himself. This was still Wyatt Carter he was talking about, after all, one of THE premier douchebags in George Hunter. It could just simply be that Lukas was able to appreciate these things while others couldn't. He had probably had more meaningful interactions with his classmates than Ivy and Wyatt combined. That had to count for something, right?

Lukas noticed Wyatt squaring up to him and backed away, mimicking his movements. He was really going to do this, huh?

He didn't dignify Wyatt with a response. That'd only feed into his already swelling sense of ego. Instead, he returned a scrappy, indignant scowl. He wasn't looking for a fight. That'd probably end up with him going headfirst into the river. It did seem like Wyatt was more than happy to pick one because of course, he was. One thing that was immediately clear to Lukas was that they weren't in school. There was a possibility that Wyatt could beat him up and get away scot-free. Even if authorities arrived on the scene, it was his and Ivy's words against his own and Lukas didn't fancy those chances. He was in between a rock and a hard place and that situation was frustrating in itself. However, he refused to let himself be scared by Wyatt and his grandstanding. He wasn't going to pick a fight, but he wasn't going to let Wyatt walk all over him.

"Do you have a problem with me leaving?" He asked tersely, making eye contact with Wyatt.

Go high.

Stay high.

Don't buckle.

That's what they want.

These thoughts buzzed in his head as he stood there, preparing himself for whatever Wyatt had ready for him. He could feel the urge to run jittering inside him, but he refused to that show Ivy or Wyatt. Was it fruitless? Probably. If people could see him now, they would probably call him an idiot. In fact, he could recognise that what he was doing right now was probably retarded.

But if he just ran, he wouldn't be able to live with himself. Nor would he hear the end of it from Wyatt. Right now, it was about making a point. He wasn't going to let Wyatt walk all over him easily. That motivation was what allowed him to remain steadfast, even under the gaze of Wyatt Carter. The ball was in his court now.

Wyatt belted out another bellowing laugh in response to Ivy's slurred speech. Fuck, she was so cute. If Bret didn't want her, well... listen, backup options were always a thing. He'd break her in half over a good time. But Lukas's presence was a funny, special thing, because just having this kid around automatically wanted to bring to mind anything OTHER than sex. Quite the feat, considering Wyatt didn't consider himself a prude at all. On the contrary, he took pride in his conquests and frequently boasted about them to anybody who would listen, typical locker room talk. But there was being promiscuous and being a freaky little deviant.

Aww. The little man was trying to play tough. Well, he wasn't exactly tiny by most standards. Lukas might actually even be a bigger kid in some circles... but depressing fact of life, kiddo, there was always somebody bigger. And where Lukas didn't have to crane his neck up as far as most to look Wyatt in the eye, there was still a near 100-pound difference in total body mass. Initially, the smaller boy had given up ground as he should have but now he was holding his ground: that was a foolish move on his part.

"Of course not!" Wyatt answered. In fact, the night would have been better on the whole if he had stayed away rather than leave, but now they had to go for the next best thing and, while the night would be more peaceful once Fetish Lad had been sent on his way, he felt he was owed a little bit of fun first. "But what's the rush?" Wyatt turned his shoulder and stepped to the side, then even turned his back and moved into position to stand beside Lukas. His left arm reached out for Lukas' back, clasping down on his far shoulder. "Stay and talk with us, Bondage Kid!" Wyatt smiled, the same smile a crocodile might give to a gazelle before chowing down.

Ivy drew her legs up to her chest, Wyatt's hoodie easily dwarfing her body. It was that weird simultaneous warm-and-cold feeling she got on drunken winter nights, where she could barely feel the wind chilling her exposed skin, as the heat inside her seemed to outweigh it. The hoodie was turning it back into a warm-and-warm feeling, though. Which would... just be a warm feeling, then. Probably?

Her head was real fuzzy.

The water looked strange in the dark, like something had sucked the life out of it. Ivy frowned. She kind of wanted to stand up, but even sitting her limbs felt wobbly, and the bench she was sitting on was dangerously close to the river's edge, and she was pretty sure falling in would be a bad idea?

She glanced back at the boys. They were kind of blurry? Wyatt and Lukas. Lucas? Lukas. God they were tall. Why were boys so tall all the time? Not that she was complaining. She was pretty sure Wyatt could pick her up with one hand. Not that she was complaining.

Her phone buzzed in her lap, taking her by surprise. She withdrew her arms from under the hoodie.

Lukas could feel the discomfort worm through his body as Wyatt laughed at Ivy's slurred speech. Maybe it was because he hadn't had much experience in dealing with drunk people, but seeing someone not functioning at thier full mental capacity wasn't something Lukas found funny. Looking at her now, curled up on the bench in the middle of the riverfront, it was hard not to be sympathetic. Though he hated Ivy and nearly everything she stood for, it was difficult for him to find pleasure in seeing her in such a pathetic state. Seeing Wyatt laugh at that just made him feel sour.

It also worried him. Ivy wasn't really in a good state to give consent. Wyatt was probably the type of guy who'd take advantage of the situation or not recognise that Ivy wasn't really in the right state of mine to be making such decisions. In an ideal world, Wyatt would take Ivy back home and then just let her sleep. But it was no secret that Wyatt openly talked about his "conquests" at school. Now, the question was whether Wyatt was an awful or stupid enough person to try to have sex with a drunk Ivy, even though she was his brother's girlfriend?

Of course, he was. Lukas wasn't fucking stupid.

So that was why, against his better judgment, Lukas decided to stay, even when the opportunity presented itself when Wyatt moved. He knew he was playing with fire. Wyatt obviously was toying with him, like a predator taunting its prey before they struck. On any other day, Lukas would've extracted himself from the situation as fast as possible. But for now, he'd have to play along. The thought of which repulsed Lukas, but he almost felt duty-bound to make sure Ivy didn't do something she regretted the next day just because she drank too much. From the few news articles he read online, things tended to end badly.

Wyatt's arm was tight around Lukas. Almost as soon as it went around, Lukas forced Wyatt off, swapping sides with him and turning to face the pair. Wyatt was dripping insincerity with everything he did. He tended to forget how repulsive Wyatt could be if he was stuck with him for more than 10 seconds. Even though he knew that he was about as trustworthy as a used car salesman, Lukas knew he couldn't just stand there and do nothing.

"About what?" He asked, his voice lacking sincerity or excitement. At this rate, Wyatt was just going to steamroll the conversation. As much fun as that sounded, he wasn't sure how much he could endure Wyatt's voice before he'd try to rip his own ears off. Instead, he shifted his attention towards Ivy.

"Hey Ivy, why're you out here alone tonight if you don't mind me asking? You're not normally the type of person to be alone."

Ok, maybe this was going to get some unwanted attention from Ivy, but at least they'd be more focused on him rather than on boning each other. At least, he hoped? He really didn't want to end up in the river tonight.

You know, for somebody who asked a lot of questions, Lukas sure didn't have any problems playing traffic controller with the conversation at the moment. Wyatt rubbed his chin and nodded as if he cared what Bondage Kid actually had to say, grinning between his thumb and his forefinger.

"Yeah, that's actually a pretty good question, Ives," Wyatt said in agreement. "Even I'm not exactly sure why Bret blew you off. Something happen or somethin'?" He threw his head in a nod to the side. "I can drive you to my place and we can fuck with him." Though there was still the present matter of their third wheel hanging out. Their third, gangling little wheel that Wyatt could have sworn smelled uncomfortably of latex.

"I mean, unless you wanna keep hanging out here. You're in such good company now, though, aren't ya? Two strong men to keep you safe, ain't that right, Bondage Kid?" Wyatt directed over Ivy's head (not a real feat, even when standing at her full height and not slovenly drunk on a park bench) to Lukas. Right now, as petty as even he could admit it was, he had a bit of a hair across his ass about how that little Oedipal cuck squirmed away from him. If that kid was going to be overly defensive and act like he was seconds away from being attacked at any moment, then... fuck it, Wyatt was going to play Make-A-Wish and fulfill some dreams.

Not yet, though. The bulky young man shifted his weight in a half-step towards Ivy on the bench, who had all but disappeared under his sweatshirt. Kinda adorable, kinda hot. She could wear the sweatshirt, and only the sweatshirt, and rock it like a dress without even showing her ass when she raised her arms. And no, he wouldn't mind testing that theory at all. He also wouldn't mind Empress Ivy giving the thumbs down on dunking Bondage Kid's ass in the river, but all things came in good time.

They were talking to her, Ivy thought. That was strange.

She'd tucked her phone back into her cape pocket, retreated her arms back under the hoodie, assuming she wouldn't get any more messages anytime soon. It seemed like a safe bet. Why would anyone want to talk to her? Hahaha. Ha. This is a particularly terrible time to be sad drunk, she admonished herself, but she was definitely drunk, and she was increasingly sad, and all of this was feeling very much like a mistake. She should have had eaten, she should have stayed home, she shouldn't have texted Myles, who usually made her feel better. She was happy like five minutes ago. She was happy like thirty seconds ago? She still felt warm, too warm, even, but she still felt goosebumps rising on her skin as a chill ran through her. It felt, more than anything, like a fever breaking.

They were talking to her, Ivy remembered.

It had probably only been a couple of seconds of silence, but she rushed to fill it. She didn't owe Lukas an answer, but she should probably give Wyatt one.

"Everyone's... busy. Got bored." She frowned. "Bret saaaaid... s'busy. Always busy. I..."

She trailed off. The alcohol coating her tongue made her want to say a whole lot more, but she was savvy enough to stop herself. Wyatt wasn't exactly a paragon of discretion, and Lukas was friends with Gaelan, and there was always a chance anything she said would make its way back to him.

Ivy pulled herself closer together, held the sweatshirt a little tighter as another shiver ran down her spine. A moment ago she'd been having fun taunting Lukas; now she just wanted him to be anywhere but here. She was acutely aware, suddenly, of how vulnerable she was. It was a hideous, paralyzing feeling, keeping her still, her mouth from moving. She'd shown far too much already.

She glanced up at Wyatt. He was closer, now. He was giant, to her. She wanted to grab him, but she'd have to come out from under the hoodie for that. She was becoming more aware of just how cold really was, though her stomach still felt like fire.

He also reminded her of Bret, and she wanted to cry, a little, but she would not cry. She'd rather throw herself into the river.

Hey, you know what always cheered her up?

"Wyaaaaatt," she sang, her expression turning into a perfectly practiced pout. Rote repetition- the secret to being cute as hell in the most strained of circumstances. "S'entertaining an'all. But I want you over here."

This was certainly a surprising turn of events. Unexpected, but most certainly welcome. He was expecting Wyatt to immediately shut him down again. Instead, he shifted his focus more so onto Ivy, expressing more sympathy and concern than he ever would've expected to see from him in a lifetime. Granted, Wyatt always found a way to meet expectations, so most of the positive feelings he would've had for him got swept away with his next sentence before they even had a chance to fully coalesce. Lukas knew Wyatt wasn't serious about him being strong because seriously, when would Wyatt ever give a legitimate compliment to someone outside of his social circle? He still nodded in response, knowing that kicking up too much of a fuss about it was going to be pointless.

It was a weird experience for Lukas, having Ivy talk about and express her feelings. He felt like a voyeur, looking in on something that was deeply personal, fascinating and taboo. Seeing Ivy be vulnerable, instead of the strong facade that she put up in school, made her worryingly human. When Lukas saw Ivy at school, she was a caricature. She was every queen bee. Every popular bitch on TV. Every rich, spoilt princess that you'd see in media. It was so easy for him to hate a figure like that. That was something that could easily be rallied behind. Seeing Ivy with emotions and problems of her own was something that Lukas had to reconcile with. In a way, he wished that he hadn't seen this side of her so that he could continue blindly loathing her and everything she did.

How lonely was Ivy? She hung out with so many people that Lukas thought he'd never see her without at least 2 of her friends circulating around her like satellites. If she had to drink to cope with her feelings and loneliness, it suggested that there was probably something much deeper going on in her life. Ivy shouldn't be deep. She should've just been Ivy, the one that he and his friends all hated. In a way, his friendships were pre-mediated on a mutual hatred for the girl that made their lives miserable. Yet, he couldn't just ignore the Ivy curled up in the cold January night.

And in the end, Lukas couldn't help but wonder why. Ivy seemed to go out of her way to assert her authority and hurt others. Before, he could've just excused her for being a heartless banshee or some other kind of colorful description. Now, Lukas couldn't help but question whether her behaviours were caused by other problems in her life. If that were the case, that meant that Ivy must've lived a sad existence. And maybe, in another world, Lukas would've been able to help with them.

Lukas stayed quiet, even as she tried to woo Wyatt. What he would've attributed to sleaziness he now saw as a cry for attention. He wasn't sure what to do at first. Even though Ivy answered his question, her answer was addressed more so to Wyatt than him. He was just there, getting in the way of things. But Lukas still wasn't comfortable with the situation. While he could possibly understand why Ivy was trying to flirt with Wyatt, he knew that it wasn't the right thing for her.

"Wyatt, would it be possible for you to take her home?" Lukas asked with a concerned look. "I mean, she's had too much to drink. I think the best thing for her is sleep."

It was probably a pathetic plea on his part. Wyatt wasn't going to listen to him, but at least he tried. It was better than just standing there and letting the catastrophe happen in front of his eyes.

As he stood there, Lukas was starting to truly recognise how powerless he was.

Wyatt was a mutt coming when Ivy rang his bell. It wasn't a secret he dug Ivy. Shit, he really, really dug her. He dug her so much that he wouldn't mind her digging him right back... rather, in his back, with her nails. But there was just one teensy, tiny, 6'3" obstacle getting in the way of that dream, and that was Bret. Getting fucked with the more awesome of the two Carter dicks could only keep a mouth glued shut for so long before you obviously wanna tell the whole world, and it was just like Wyatt had always thought: word gets around. It was only a matter of time before his brother heard about the betrayal and then that was just the 'shit where you eat' kinda mess that he really didn't want to deal with.

Oh and he supposed he was already dating somebody else, that too, whatev.

Wyatt stood beside Ivy on the bench and set his hand down gently as he could on the back of her neck. Heh... the way she was sitting, and with his height, she was at the right height. He kept the thought in the back of his mind and let his eyes find Lukas before the rest of his head followed.

"Uh... the fuck you still doing here, dude?" Wyatt asked. "And what the fuck do you think I'm gonna do? Just leave her here?"
