Flagrant One

PM first!

The woods themselves are still lush and green, with copious amounts of vegetation. Due to all the foot travel over the years, paths are still present even as the ferns start to grow. Despite this, it is still easy to get lost if one was to venture off the path as the woods are quite densely packed.

((Quinn continued from Fly Back To School Now, Little Starling))

The woods weren't comfortable, but losing herself in their midst had both familiarity and appeal. Quinn had made a path through the trees plenty of times over this last week, and though she never let her guard all the way down, it was significantly easier to concentrate when she didn't have to rubberneck every couple of seconds to ensure she was safe. Maybe others would feel paranoid here, fretting about a murderer around any given tree, but frankly, if someone wanted to make an ambush, there were so many better places to do it than hiding here and waiting to jump out on someone. There was nothing here, nothing to draw anyone except the simple point A to point B of getting around the island. If Quinn decided to set a trap—she didn't think it would be her style, personally, too much waiting around—she'd prepare it in a high traffic area, one that was enticing to others. Not the middle of nowhere. Camping out here actually sounded like a great way for someone else to sneak up and stab you square in the back while you were setting up your master plan.

She had better things to care about. For instance, keeping up her stamina and supplies. She was fairly well set for food and water, although some of the more perishable items she'd looted were starting to become questionable at best. The humidity was poor for that, but there was a balance to strike between eating the food while it was still good and tearing through all her rations. They weren't yet that deep into the game, and while there would be opportunities to scavenge later, the likelihood was that the later she killed anyone, the less they'd have on them. She could hunt, maybe, though she had her doubts as to both the efficiency and effectiveness of making an attempt. Quinn was well aware she'd struggle to hit anything, and if she missed, the would be target would be gone and there she'd be having just sent up a signal that she was in the area for absolutely no gain. Quinn didn't need to take a risk like that. Something to consider if the food situation worsened, but to keep shelved for now unless a golden opportunity presented itself.

Secondarily, all this walking was beginning to push fatigue through her muscles, making her feet sorer and sorer. Presence of mind worked to an extent, willpowering her way through the pain, just, when her legs were tired, her legs were tired. Perhaps she needed to bolthole for a day or so, catch some legitimate rest. If the idiot boy in the house could barricade a door, so could Quinn. Mulling it over, that sounded pretty worthwhile, though it had also been a while since she last let loose, and the memories of that particularly frustrating failure loomed large enough to chase away any thought of resting. Not now.

Quinn stopped and stretched, tilting her neck this way, then the other.

Yeah. Not just yet. Today was a good day for it. Always was.

((Jonah Heartgrave continued from Life is Just a Memory))

It took almost a day.

Jonah and Arizona left the blood drenched house and started covering ground. They stayed away from the beach because the sand would have swallowed any helpful evidence. The pair traveled as fast as they could. They hiked and rested now and then beneath the trees that were floating pollen and flowers above them. Jonah was asking for rest more often than Arizona was but he was finally asking and she didn't mind. They became wolves working in a comfortable silence, pointing, inspecting, leaping, and running. They collected rocks of a certain size and weight, and Jonah stored them in his bag.

At night they became human again. They slept in a thicket and talked in hushed tones about if Michael Meyers could beat Jason Voorhees until Arizona fell asleep. Jason was a zombie, probably, maybe. Jonah thought as he followed her into sleep that it was okay if he and Arizona lived their lifetime together in these last couple of days. Wild animals lived their whole lives in a shorter time compared to house pets, he thought. They would never have a wedding day, and he would never ruffle his grandchild's hair, but this was its own sort of different happiness. The crickets chirped for companionship and to impart their good luck.

She shook him awake the next morning; the morning of day six. The seagulls that cried gently as they packed up scattered like smoke when the announcement played, revealing that Quinn had killed another person.

Jonah and Arizona were having better luck today. They compared the foot prints to the foot print on the piece of rug that Jonah had cut from the scene of Bert's murder, though at some point he no longer needed to look at it. There was a lead to follow and it got stronger and clearer the more they followed it. Soon they were in the forest and had even more to go on. There were disturbed branches, broken twigs on the ground, lizards no longer darted off at their approach.

Finally the signs were clear and they knew. Jonah gave Arizona the gun and hugged her tightly. He let her go and pulled out one rock.

"I'll be here if you need," he whispered.

She nodded and with that, they parted

((Arizona continued from Life Is Just A Memory))

Arizona took a deep breath.

They had found her.

It hadn't taken that long all things considered. One day of solid searching and they'd tracked her down. The serenity of the woods helped calm her nerves and belied the danger that was just out of view. Arizona could feel her presence, the feeling of her nearby. Jonah had already left her to take his position. Whatever came next she was on her own. Standing of the precipice of whatever would be.

She took another breath and steadied her shaking hands. There was an energy building inside her, a trepidation tinged with excitement. The closest comparison she could think of was the feeling she had before a championship game. The atmosphere of the arena building as the spectators filed in. Meanwhile, in reality, a specter lurked just out of her vision. Her grip on the gun tightened as she readied herself. The shape had stopped moving. It was time to confront the person who had once been her teammate. She was still herself though. She was still Arizona and Arizona didn't scare. She owned this shit. MDK all fucking day.

So she stepped out.

"Hey, Quinn!" She called to her former teammate, making the presence of the gun clear. "We need to talk."

Every modicum of Quinn's cheer and thoughtfulness was eradicated the moment, in some twist of deeply frustrating irony, someone appeared in front of her. From behind a tree, because of course.

The one person, the one person Quinn didn't want to run into had to just go and show up, didn't she?

Quinn's locked her jaw and stared Arizona down. The hyper-competitive member of the team, the one who really did care about winning more than any of the others. Fierce. Bold.

She knew all of these things about Arizona, and all of those things were the reasons that Quinn hadn't wanted to encounter her, especially after the Rhonda fiasco. Any of the people she killed would have accordingly upset classmates who were within the dead's sphere, have an axe to grind after what Quinn had taken from them. None of that concerned Quinn. The team, though, was different, and the most different of them all was Arizona. She wasn't afraid of Arizona, she just knew that out of everyone that would draw a line, it would be her, out of everyone, she'd take what she'd done the most personally.

And now there she was. Armed.

Quinn flexed her fingers.

"No we don't."

"I got eight names that say otherwise."

They stared each other down, eyes locked. Neither of them giving an inch or any outward sign of their emotions. The woods had gone quiet. For as long as it lasted the only two people in Arizona's world were her and Quinn. She towered over the other girl. In any other context, it would have been a funny visual. Arizona looked over her former teammate's face, taking in her angular features, still the same person. Still, the exact same person who always looked slightly like shit. It was disappointing.

Quinn had always been quiet though. Even on the court, she was nearly non-verbal. So it wasn't much of a surprise that she didn't want to talk. She was as close as you could get to being a human ghost. Besides the one time she had nearly started a full-court brawl. And the other where she injured Sam on purpose. Knowing all that, Arizona was going to keep going. She had spent over a day looking for Quinn. There was no chance she was leaving now.

So she pressed on.

"Why'd you kill Rhonda?"

Quinn showed more restraint than she had all week by not immediately biting back. Arizona probably didn't even remember all of those names. Who, hand on heart, could say that they actually cared about eight different classmates? Really cared, didn't just find tolerable, or decent to spend a little time around. How many of them did Arizona think about when she wasn't at school, make time to spend with them, beyond what was already there?

Quinn was willing to bet she'd spent more time in Arizona's company than anyone else she'd killed but Rhonda.

So, was Arizona upset because of eight, or because Quinn was in her sphere? Quinn was a known quantity, a subordinate, somebody whose skill on the court supported the efforts of Arizona, the 'star'. Quinn had escaped her orbit by doing this, and now she wasn't in control. Arizona wasn't angry about the dead for who they were, she was angry because she felt responsible for Quinn.

Arizona hadn't owned her then, she didn't own her now.

Quinn's eyes slowly roved around, taking it in. Arizona's distance, the stature and strength she was very familiar with. The gun. The surroundings. Arizona was very fast.

"I told her I had nothing to say to her and she still decided not to let it drop."

The wandering ceased, focused dead on Arizona. Narrowed.

"Kind of like you're doing."

"Ooooh. Scary."

There was no humor in Arizona's voice. Just the blunt discarding of the attempted threat. She'd seen Quinn's eyes roving around. Figuring something out or checking some aspect of their surroundings. Arizona had a good idea of what she could have been thinking. You didn't get to eight kills without picking up some skills. So even though Arizona didn't like Quinn, she was forced to respect what she could potentially do. But she had been thinking about that the entire time they'd been searching for her. Visualising the encounter over and over again, playing out different scenarios in her head. It was no substitute for actually standing opposite the other girl. But that was the trick, Quinn was just another girl.

Arizona glanced down at the weird double dagger thing Quinn held. There was also a bulge of some sort in her hoodie. Her grip on the gun tightened.

"And Bert? What'd she do?"

Quinn shifted her weight onto the other foot. She was mocking her. Irritating.

Quinn's fingers twitched. She stilled them. Rising to the bait was the kind of stupid move that would get her killed. What would charging down a gun get her, other than shot? Arizona didn't even have to be good with a gun, she just had to be lucky. Quinn refused to invite dying to a complete fluke.

"I'm not standing here and going through them one by one," said Quinn, watching Arizona watch her. Even if Quinn remembered which person was which kill, she really didn't care. Arizona wasn't capable of understanding in the first place.

"What do you want?"

Quinn was getting annoyed with her. Good. That was part of the plan. It had been a part of how she operated on the court as well. People tended to forget their own gameplans and strategies when they got emotional. Instead, they became focused on getting back at her. So Arizona welcomed Quinn getting riled up. It was exactly what she wanted. Of course, there was a good chance Quinn was also aware of that.

Arizona couldn't help the corners of her mouth turning up into a small smirk as Quinn continued. The adrenaline was pouring through her body as they edged closer to the inevitable. Stood there, face to face with the person she had spent much of her time thinking about Arizona found that her nerves had vanished. She knew what she had to do. It was just a matter of doing it. It was that simple. But she still had one question.

"I want to know why," She started, her mouth setting back into a line. "And don't give me any of that 'to survive' shit."

Quinn laughed.

For all her caution, for all that she knew that Arizona was a person she hadn't wanted to encounter, the question was the same.

They just didn't get it, did they?

They didn't understand how someone could view them as something less than people, how Quinn could go from behaving and toeing the line to killing one after the other.

Arizona wondered how she could have missed it, that Quinn was capable of this. What made Quinn flip now.

Quinn wondered why it had taken her so long.

Arizona wanted an answer? Quinn would give her an answer.

"It was fun."

Quinn laughed and Arizona's mask slipped for a brief moment. For a split-second she was off-guard, then her focus returned.

Arizona heard Quinn's answer and for what felt like an eternity, there was silence.

Just the two of them, at the end of time.

"Fair enough."

She rolled her shoulders and dropped her pack to the ground. Eyes still focused on Quinns

"All a part of the game, right?"

She whistled for Jonah.

Jonah's eyes blinked, looking at the pair from behind some tall foliage next to a tree. He was in a semi-crouched position like a runner at a starting block, and he was a acutely aware of his breathing, which was even and deep. His heart beat was a little quicker than normal.

He couldn't hear everything that they were saying, but he could hear enough to get the general idea of the conversation. His eyes were trained on Quinn's hands. Jonah gripped the rock in his hand and felt the rough texture of the stone on his fingers. It was different than the smooth and stitching of baseballs. He had done this thousands of times, maybe into the millions. Two hours a day, three days a week, for seven years: throwing a ball at a target. His pitches had clocked in at 85 mph on the field. He'd never actually hit someone with a pitch before.

Arizona's signal pierced the heavy air and made his nerves spark from his spine to his finger tips. He let out all of the air in his lung, gripped the rock, lifted his left leg, brought his arm back, and then used the momentum of his body to launch his projectile as fast as possible.

Batter up, miss

Arizona was going to lunge, it was just a matter of when.

Quinn had seen that expression on her face before. It was the look she wore when she was about to tear through the other team on the court. The expression that was one of the few times Quinn felt that she could properly understand another person. It wasn't about winning the game in that moment, it was about crushing the opponents.

The moment Arizona showed up, Quinn had accepted that this was inevitable. She wasn't just going to let her off with a stern word and an interrogation. One way or another, Arizona was going to try and stop her. Quinn hadn't wanted to handle that.

A gunfight didn't sound like a good prospect. Too many risks. Could she outrun Arizona? That would avoid this being a problem for now, but Quinn wasn't as certain as she would have liked to be. Both of them were quick, but they were carrying weight. Arizona was built better for that—

She whistled.

Quinn's gun was halfway out of her pocket when the rock connected with her arm with an audible crack. The dual-blade fell to the ground as her whole body recoiled from the impact, an explosive burst of pain radiating outward.

Someone else—somebody—this bitch thought she could just lure her in like that!?

Stumbling ungainly to a tree on her right, Quinn started firing back at the direction of the rock. Nobody hurt her. Nobody hurt her.

Jonah heard the sickening crunch and peered up from above the leaves to see more clearly. He had a second rock ready in his hand.

Quinn was laid out and her arm looked strange. He was aghast at his own handiwork for a moment. He looked at Arizona to make sure she was okay.

It was time poorly spent and soon Quinn was back up and raising the gun. Jonah quickly ducked behind the tree before she sent a barrage of bullets his way. He pushed his back to the wood, trying not to stick out too far in any direction. The tree, whatever sort of tree it was, was thick and ancient and was just slightly wider than Jonah was. It took the hits for him and he covered his ears to block out the loud crackling. He saw bark exploding out of his periphery and then felt stinging -- some of the wood that had splintered from one of the shots and stuck into his left forearm.

Jonah covered his mouth with the hand attached to the injured arm; he didn't want to drop the rock and he didn't want to inadvertently make any noises of panic or pain. He could see the blood making its way down his arm.

Maybe he could get Quinn with the second rock if Arizona could get her attention back. If he tried to move away from his cover while she was looking his way there was a good chance she'd shoot him. He held on tight to the rock, gulped and concentrated on being as quiet and still as possible.

The only noise he heard was the soft patter of a few drops of his blood hitting the dirt.

Quinn fired at Jonah and Arizona fired at her in kind. The problem was that Arizona had never fired a gun before. So when she fired her first shot with the desert eagle it sailed wide. It also jumped her arm and hand back. As it did so she felt a sting like someone had pinched her forearm and a dull fuzzy pain slowly spread across her wrist.

Her teammate had scrambled behind a tree. The weird double blade she’d held lay discarded in the grass. Arizona ran over to it and picked it up. To cover herself she attempted to pull the trigger on her gun but found the strength drained from her fingers. She could feel them, but they weren’t responding properly.

Instead of wasting time trying to figure out the problem she instead rushed for cover behind a tree of her own. Ignoring the desire to charge Quinn down for shooting at Jonah. As she did so the adrenaline that had been waiting was finally set free. With nowhere else to hold the blade she stuck the handle in her mouth and grit her teeth as she fire off two more shots at Quinn.
