Oneshot

The infirmary is the second-largest building in the village, bigger than any of the houses but smaller than the commissary. Like all of them, it is constructed from wooden boards, but is painted bright red. The interior of the infirmary is set out much as one would expect. There is a smaller entrance and reception area and beyond that is a larger room with a collection of six beds, all with bedding present. At the back of this room is a storeroom that once would have contained a collection of medical equipment kept on wooden shelving, although all the equipment and medicine has been removed.

The travel had been surprisingly uneventful. Once Tirzah and Wyatt had finished carrying out their “business transaction” they had set off back up the island. He had passed the time waiting for them by figuring out how to work the night vision goggles. Their final destination was in a shack on the outskirts of the village, close enough that they could observe it but far enough to not be easily spotted. The three of them weren’t going to be popular sights for many of the other students. Tirzah’s two kills would make it especially difficult for them to deal with any tense encounters. The good news was that with both him and Wyatt armed they were already coming out ahead on the deal they had made. Tirzah wanted protection and they had made that deal. But Bret was also aware that any deal was tenuous at best. There was nothing keeping Tirzah from putting bullets in him or his brother as they slept and as far as she knew there was nothing stopping them doing the same.

The fact a deal had even been made was irritating to him. It was unnecessary and if it wasn’t for Wyatt’s low bargaining point it would never have been made in the first place. But Bret couldn’t let that show, so he continued as normal. They had plenty for food with the addition of Paloma and Ron’s bags. It was a good thing too, it gave him excuse enough to reign Wyatt back. They could wait and make use of some of what they had acquired. They didn’t need to rush things. It was a good time to conserve energy.

The watch was sorted out and Bret made it clear to Wyatt that one of them always needed to be awake. Then they settled in for the evening. He hadn’t been expecting an easy rest so he wasn’t disappointed when he was woken up. He heard the heavy movements of his brother. He kept his eyes closed and breathing steady while Wyatt left. Then once he was satisfied his twin was far enough away he rolled over and opened his pack to retrieve the goggles. Sliding them onto his head he watched Wyatt as he approached a light in the village. He watched his brother go up to a window. He watched him yell and speak to someone. He crouched there and watched everything. He made a note of it all.

By the time Wyatt returned to the shack Bret was back in bed. They could continue as if nothing had happened.
