I Pray to the Lord You Reveal what His Truth is

Open

Unlike the east side of the village, the west side of the housing has remained in much the same condition it was left in. The houses here are all in the same state as they were when they were first built, the identical houses all sitting in identical rows with the only difference being their color. The interior of the houses all share the same layout, with a shared living area/kitchen and a separate bedroom. The state of these rooms is surprisingly clean and consistent throughout the western side of the village as well, with all the beds appearing to have been made and the houses tidied, with chairs tucked into the kitchen table before the residents departed.

((Tanisha Abbey continued from What a Wicked Way to Treat the Girl Who Loved You))

"Okay, so I guess we just go West, and then we'll get to high ground," Tanisha said, looking at her party and off into the western view of the island. "Just like the pioneers or something."

Although she doubted they would find gold, Tanisha had to hope this journey would yield some treasure. They had just left the commissary and were heading west in hopes of getting to some of the hills and mountainous areas of the island. This gave the trio a good look at the surrounding area. It looked like they woke up in some kind of summer camp island or something. Maybe that wasn't what it actually was, but there had to be some kind of community with a communal dining area and similar looking homes. She'd wait to call it a summer camp island until she saw some archery ranges or some canoes though. That's the definite sign.

Tanisha felt the shotgun start to weigh her down. It wasn't too heavy, but even just a short walk keeping her arms bent to hold it was starting to strain on her. She might have to do some lifts or curls with it if she was to survive here for a while. Maybe she'd find some time once they made camp for the night. Until then, it was just Tanisha, Cammy, and Jeff starting their odd trek to the mountains.

"So, what kind of place do you think this island was?" Tanisha asked her team. "Like, what kind of people lived here?"

(Jeff Greene following along from What a Wicked Way To Treat the Girl Who Loved You)

Jeff was feeling the strain in a different way, having decided that he would just carry his gear instead of stowing it. If someone ran at them with a sword or something, he’d be hard-pressed to strap his shield on then, so he might as well just have it out at all times. Always be prepared. That was, like, the Boy Scout motto or something. Close enough.

That’s where the problems came in. While not exactly heavy, the bat and the shield together were a little uncomfortable to walk with. The shield especially was almost as tall as he was, and if he let his arm fall, it began to drag along the ground and bump into his feet. As if he needed a reminder that he was short.

Still, he felt secure enough to take in the environment around him. Tanisha asked what kind of place this was, and he kinda wondered that himself.

“Looks like some vacation getaway,” he posited, and pointed back the way they came. “That weird building we were in, felt like a hotel lobby.”

Course, if this WAS some corporate holiday island or whatever, where’d all the people go? Did the company go bust? Then why’d they leave all this behind? Should have bulldozed it, right? The houses had signs of falling to pieces, but they weren’t THAT old. Unless maybe...

The shield dug into the ground again, and Jeff tripped forward and smacked it into his shin, interrupting his thoughts. “Grgh, son of a...” he growled, rubbing the affected area. He was feeling less cool every time he did that.

If only she had some weed. That would be good way to relax. To take the edge off, if only a little bit.

Cammy was pretty on edge right about now.

Sure, nothing bad had happened yet, but Cammy was still unable to relax. As they travelled up to higher ground, she could almost pretend that it was just a weird, slightly off-putting vacation spot, but then she'd look back and Tanisha still had the gun and Jeff still had the shield and the bat and she'd be pulled back into the reality of the situation.

She had been noticing Jeff's little trips and stumbles every so often as they walked. She hadn't really been affected by the walk itself. This was nothing to her, after all, but perhaps the others...

"Maybe... we should take a small break?"

Whatever the island was, it wasn't going to be a summer camp island or any other kind of island besides "that place a ton of teenagers got murdered in." Tanisha could hope that they'd find a way to let the ocean swallow it up once the ordeal was over and the bodies were returned home, but otherwise, it'd just remain there as some weird testament to the chaos.

But Tanisha could ruminate on that later. Apparently, Jeff was having trouble walking and Cammy was suggesting they take a break.

"Okay, a quick one though," Tanisha said. "We're not even out of this town area yet."

Maybe the village was larger than Tanisha thought, but they had to be getting closer to the hilly areas soon.

"Jeff, do you need help?"

Fine, sure, take a break. Jeff wasn't feeling tired. He wasn't even breathing heavily. But whatever, all part of working with a team. He could just twiddle his thumbs and pretend to look busy while they were congratulating themselves for stepping out the front door of their friggin' house.

And what was she talking about offering help for? He gave a sardonic huff. "Not unless you can saw a few inches off this thing." He waved the shield to indicate what he was talking about, because he wasn't sure that Tanisha wouldn't take that the wrong way, and he was already in a bad enough mood without some hi-LARIOUS misunderstanding involving wordplay.

Jeez, how was he this pissed already? What was he going to do if he met someone who actually wanted to hurt him? Well...actually, he knew the answer to that one, and frankly, he'd just as soon not say it out loud. Jeff knew who he was, what he was like, how he'd react. All he could hope was that these two ladies weren't there to watch him when he did.

Shaking his head, he stretched out a bit and said, "Well, if we're gonna stop, now's a good time to get this out of the way...who are you two exactly? Never took the time to know anyone at school. Didn't see the point. Better late than never, I guess." While he was talking, he scanned the alleys between homes, looking for any signs of movement. Be just his luck if he tried to make conversation and he got himself shot while he wasn't looking.

Oh shit. Oh man. Oh geez. This was not good. In fact, this was the very polar opposite of good. This was downright terrible. There was absolutely no way that this trip could have become any more of a disaster, short of the earth opening up and swallowing them whole in the middle of the bus ride.

Scratch that, this outcome was definitely worse.

B071: Salvatore “Sal” Bonaventura - Start

Bile rose in Sal’s throat as he sat in the alleyway, his head in his hands. He could feel the familiar tightness in his chest as the world seemed to spin around him, his breathing coming out in sharp, shallow breaths. This was it. The end. The conclusion. The final curtain. He was going to die here - no doubt about it. A cold feeling began to spread through his body as yet another wave of self pity crashed onto him, cause a faint choking sound to erupt from his throat.

In the midst of his freakout, he became aware of distantly approaching voices, the sounds coming closer and closer with every passing second. Sal’s entire body began to tense up, his hands shaking as he waited. What should he do? The idea of a gang of killers roaming the alleys, looking for victims made him sick to his stomach. On the other hand, maybe they were the opposite - decent people sticking together for their own self-defense. It was really up to a coin flip, and Sal wasn’t feeling lucky. At all.

He sighed. If they were looking to kill him, it wouldn’t matter if he stayed put or walked out. They’d find him eventually. On the other hand, if they were safe, it wouldn’t be a good idea to just let them pass him by. There was safety in numbers, and hanging out with a group of people who were (ideally) stronger and better armed than he was would be the best chance for his survival, at least in the short term.

Still… Sal looked down at his shaking hands, sniffing. He was clearly a wreck. What if they didn’t want him to tag along? Someone like him was definitely a liability, especially in a dangerous situation like this. He took a few deep breaths, attempting to calm himself down. There was no way he could let them see how messed up he was.

In theory, it was easy. All he had to do was act calm and collected, just like playing a character on stage, only instead of a fictional character, it’d be the persona that he put on every day at school. Sure, it wasn’t very honest, but if the alternative was dying, what choice did he have? He rubbed his face with his hands and fixed up his hair, or at least did the best he could without a mirror, before stepping out of the alleyway in front of the group of three of his classmates.

Holy shit.

The first thing he noticed was the massive shotgun in Tanisha’s hands, followed shortly after by the imposing melee setup carried by the hulking figure that was Jeff. The shock was almost enough to make him break character before he even began, though an almost herculean effort allowed him to keep his composure. He cleared his throat before waving at the group, keeping both hands in the air, above his head.

“Hey guys, sorry to interrupt! Um, don’t worry...I don’t have any weapons on me.”

He swallowed dryly as his eyes scanned their expressions, his heart pounding in his chest. If they didn’t buy this, there was a good chance that he wasn’t going to live long enough to get a second try.

Cammy nodded in agreement. She wasn't the one who needed the break, so she was fine with a short one.

After that, she kept quiet. Jeff and Tanisha exchanged a few words, and Cammy decided to look down to the ground. She stooped down when she noticed an insect in the grass. What was that? Her eyes strained to focus on the insect and, for just a few seconds, everything else was pushed into the background.

And then Jeff asked her a question, directly addressing her, and she was pulled back to the present.

"Um, I'm C-" she started, but she was interrupted by someone else popping out of the alleyway.

Camellia jumped, her current words dying in her throat as new ones took their place.

"Wh-Who are you?"

"Sorry, can't help you there," Tanisha said to Jeff's comment. "Whoever sawed off this gun could have had the foresight to leave me the saw, but I guess they decided against it."

It looked like they were willing to take a moment to catch themselves. Tanisha wasn't sure how long they'd wait around. Maybe Jeff needed the break, or maybe Cammy was a little afraid to keep going. They could figure that out in a few minutes. In the mean time, Jeff wanted to know a bit more about the girls. Tanisha could understand why. The three of them never hung out back home, only had a few passing interactions over four years of high school, and they were now expected to somehow work together to survive a death game for as long as humanly possible.

Before Tanisha could explain herself, someone else appeared. Tanisha turned and saw Sal Bonaventura appear. Sal was a theatre geek, but that was about all Tanisha knew about him. He had his arms up and was trying to inform them that he wasn't a threat. Tanisha doubted he could be when she was packing that much heat and Jeff looked like something out of Mad Max with his shield and bat.

"Yeah, we're not looking for trouble as long as you don't bring any," Tanisha told Sal. "But maybe you can help us. We're looking for some people, so maybe you can tell us if you've seen any of them."

Jeff was going to tell his unlikely posse to look alive, but it seems like they caught sight of the new kid around the same time he did. He didn’t know him, probably some nerd or other. They all just kind of blend together after a while. Besides, Jeff’s eyes weren’t on the guy’s face but his hands which, to his credit, appeared to be empty.

Not that he believed him about not having a weapon. Everyone had a weapon. Question was whether it was a good one. Maybe it was a taser or something and he was bluffing to get close. Naw, he’d get smashed or blown to bits regardless. If he was going up emptyhanded, he was probably clean. Besides, if Tanisha was vouching for him, he figured that he could go along with it. No point in beating someone to a pulp based purely on a hunch.

“Yeah, what she said,” he added to Tanisha’s greeting. “Long as you don’t start anything, we’re cool.” She was leading with the questions, so he’d just be ready to back her up if things went wrong. Eyes were on the hands. If they drifted to his pockets or anywhere else, well...then they’d have a problem.

Whoa there, that was a lot of questions! Not that he was complaining, of course. Being interrogated like that wasn't exactly the most pleasant feeling in the world, but it sure as hell beat lying on the ground while slowly bleeding out from being blasted by that huge-ass shotgun, the one that he totally wasn't imagining going off and blowing his head off. Nope. Not thinking about that at all.

Anyway, his continued existence was definitely a sign that things were going in the right direction. Not to say that things couldn't go sour later, obviously, but the initial danger was over. In retrospect, the possibility of an armed group of players coordinating at this early stage in the game was fairly unlikely. Not unlikely enough to make it a smart decision to lay his guard down, but enough to at least bring down his heart rate to a level where it didn't feel like it was going to explode, which was good, because it was a lot easier to play things cool when you weren't in the middle of a panic attack. Sal cleared his throat and spoke, trying to sound as casual as he could.

"Ah, sorry, I haven't seen anyone since I woke up. Well, besides you guys, of course. If you want, though, I can help you look for whoever you're trying to find." He paused for a moment to breathe before continuing. "Who are you looking for, by the way?"

Sal knew how this was going to play out. It was the same in every single movie ever made. Going looking for someone in these sorts of situations always ended up with the main characters finding the person dead or somehow unable to help. Of course, pointing that out wouldn't do any good for the situation, since his primary objective for the moment was to avoid pissing off the folks with the arsenal of deadly weapons at their disposal.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. He turned to Cammy and gave a reassuring smile to the girl who seemed to look exactly like he felt. Funny how those things work out.

"And, yeah, my name's Sal. I think maybe we've had a couple classes together, though I think I've forgotten your name. What is it, again? Sorry…"

Man, it was a good thing he was used to talking fast back home, or this conversation would be a lot more painful than it already was.

"It's... it's Camellia... er, Cammy."

Did she ever have any classes with this boy? She probably did, but she didn't recognize him. She thought that maybe his name sounded familiar, but other than that, nothing.

Anyway, as it were, there was another question that Sal had asked. Who was she looking for?

Cammy opened her mouth for a few seconds, before closing it again. Maybe she should let the others answer first? She looked to the other two. Maybe she should. Yeah, maybe she would.

So she stayed silent until the others named names.

Tanisha could relax a bit since Sal made it clear he was no threat. She knew the time to be that gracious would be reduced the longer they were here, but for now, she could at least trust Sal to just be there and do nothing. He at least was willing to work with the group, so Tanisha could at least give him the chance.

"Well, we've got a few people we're looking for. I'm mostly interested in finding Joanne Coleman and Adele Jones," Tanisha explained. "But really, I'd take anyone from the dance team as well, but Jo and Dell are my main targets."

Tanisha looked over to Jeff and Cammy.

"How about you guys?"

Sal and Cammy. Okay, cool, that was two-thirds of the group identified. Between that and his knowledge of the football team, he had about 5% of the island population tucked away in his memory. Some would consider that a failing grade, but he believed there was room for improvement.

For instance, Joanne Coleman and Adele Jones, other names to file away in the old mental Rolodex. Granted, he had no earthly clue who they were, but apparently they danced and knew his traveling buddy. Under the circumstances, that was everything Jeff needed to know about them aside from their current weapons and whether or not they’d killed someone.

When the conversation swung around to Jeff, he pondered the matter and concluded, “Eh, I’d say folks from the team like Connor or Ace, but those assholes are probably shooting the island up right now.”

Facts be faced, there was no reason to find any of those musclebound doofuses. In a game about conquering your peers, Jeff assumed that folks like, well, himself would be trying to carve out a domain on this meager landscape. Maybe forming rival gangs, invading territories and stockpiling weapons. That’s what HE was trying to do, after all, and nobody on that team was better than him. Under the circumstances, running into those dudes was tantamount to suicide.

“This ain’t a game for assuming the best of folks,” he remarked out loud with a dismissive shrug. “Just the facts, everyone wants to kill you.” Or do something worse, he conceded in his head. But mostly kill you.

((Yuka Hayashibara continues from Quintessential Thinking))

Yuka had acted foolishly back in the forest. She realized this as she walked towards the village, heels off, salt gun in her hand, panic still bubbling below the skin, though less so now. She had tried to alleviate this by screaming, once she was well and truly alone, but instead of 'AAAAAAH,' what came out was 'aaaaah,' a remark rather than an exclamation, like a sound you make when a light bulb goes off in your head, not a release of tension. And that sound that she had made had her double over in laughter, and that helped things for a while, clear her mind a bit. And then, she continued walking, and got to thinking.

She shouldn't have had the salt gun out. Either it scared off friends, potential allies, like it did just earlier, or worst case scenario, it got her shot as people either viewed her a threat or called out her bluff. She considered using it as a bludgeon, but that idea came with the thought of actually striking people in the head with it, and she would rather not. Not until she got there, if she got there, and hopefully she didn't.

In any case, the weapon reminded her of those toy guns she'd see in the Toys R Us she used to go to, the aisle next to the makeup kits and Barbie dolls. Those guns didn't seem that strong, that durable. So, into her daypack it went, nestled on top of the First Aid Kit and the map.

Once she got into the village, she found a small alleyway between some of the houses and sat down. She put on her heels, seeing as the dirt paths here had become less rough here and the thought of dusting up her black knee socks any more brought her pain. She rolled up her sleeves. And she honestly should have done more than that to adjust to the climate. It felt like Chattanooga on a bad summer day. It felt like the air itself was sticking to every bit of skin, exposed and not exposed. But to remove her makeup, to switch out the fedora and heels and black skirt for more practical indoor clothes felt like removing part of her identity. Just for today at least, she still wanted to be the Yuka people knew in school. So, the sweat dripped down her neck, inside and outside her collar.

After taking a swig from the bottle of water she'd been provided, she looked at the map. 'Menagerie' was a foreign word to Yuka, but one she knew. She had encountered it in one of the books they'd been assigned in English class back in middle school, and Yuki told her that menageries were basically zoos. Yuka wondered if the animals were still there. Yuko liked animals. Maybe she'd be there.

Before she could wonder about where Yuki would be, words came to her from afar. She quickly but quietly stashed her stuff inside her bag, listening to them. She couldn't quite make out the words, but it was the tone she was listening to. And it sounded normal. Even tones, no sudden changes in volume or anything. She thought she could recognize a few of the voices, but there was only one way to find out.

Take two. Hopefully it goes better this time.

She walked out of the alley, hands up, level with her head. "Hey guys. I'm safe, don't worry."

And then she saw who exactly she was talking to. Her eyes lit up and a grin broke upon her face.

"Tanisha! Sal! How've you guys been?"

Joanne and Adele? Sal swallowed. Not that those two were bad people or anything, but there was no way a group of six people could possibly stay together in a situation like this. Hell, even four was a little too much, if you thought about it, but...

Somebody else was going to point that out, right? He wasn't going to say it and go and piss everyone off, but surely the others were thinking it? His eyes darted between Cammy and Jeff's faces, watching for any sense of disagreement.

His rising anxiety was quickly brought down by the arrival of a friendly voice. He turned to look at Yuka, a smile rising on his face as he saw the her walk out of the alley, dressed as always in one of her wacky outfits. He slowly moved closer to her, feeling a little safer being near someone that he could actually trust. He laughed a little nervously as he spoke to her, his guard letting down just a little bit as a barrage of questions tumbled out of his mouth.

"Not too great, honestly, but I mean, you were probably expecting that. How've things been for you? You holding up ok?"

Sal could feel the tension in his body relax slightly as he waited for her reply. The fact that he had at least one friend here was a huge weight off his shoulders. Hopefully things would only go uphill from here...

Hopefully.
