This entire area is quite dank.

Open, Day 4, just after the announcements.

The east side of the community housing shows the wear of abandonment. The wilderness has started to reclaim the land the village was built on, meaning that many of the houses furthest from the center have become overgrown with vines and plants. The frequency of tropical storms has had a more noticeable impact on this side of the village as well. Some of the houses have been hit with debris from uprooted trees, while others have been torn asunder by a combination of debris, rain and wind. This has left a scattering of large wooden boards painted various colors across the entire area.

((Catherine Zier continued from Do not collect $200.))

She hadn't run into anyone from then until now.

That was... a positive, she guessed.

Her clothes were soaked.

That was definitely a negative.

She recognized the area she'd found herself in. How could she not? She was basically walking in circles at this point. She'd ducked into one of the building to shelter herself from the rain.

Because, well, being rained for several minutes as one sat on a beach was fine, but minute 12 is where a line must be drawn.

Of course.

Her thoughts were still a churning torrent of half-formed plans. She'd congratulated herself on making it this far, but eventually, it would all catch up to her, no?

She had to do something while she still could.

She idly tapped the blade of the shiv against the table she was sitting at like a drum stick.

She was starting to... get lonely? Was that the right way of saying it? She didn't know. She wanted someone to talk to at least. Being trapped with her thoughts was getting tiring. She looked out the window, noticing how bright it had gotten. She'd lost track of time. Great.

(Jeff Greene continued from Back in the Saddle)

Jeff had to admit, it felt good to have a free hand, whether to push away hanging branches or just so he could actually eat and drink on the go. Yesterday, he'd had to drop his shield, open the water bottle with two fingers, take a drink, screw the top back on, pick up his shield again...

Point was, it had been a pain in the neck, and having a hand to do things felt almost like an unearned privilege.

With this frame of mind, he came striding through the village, chomping one of their tasteless energy bars as he scanned for movement. To be honest, he was being way too reckless. He'd passed by at least a dozen houses where someone could have poked a gun out the window and plugged him without a second thought. Wouldn't THAT have been embarrassing. But hey, if it happened, it happened. Before he could be worried about something like survival, he needed to first verify something very important, almost invaluable even.

As he passed a tree in the village, a bit of movement caught his eye, and he jerked his head over to see what clearly was a human face, peeking through the window of a house not 20 feet away. Looked like a girl, from what he saw, but that was all he could tell. He stepped back behind the tree, out of sight, pondering his next move. She'd probably seen him, or at least caught sight of something moving. He wouldn't have surprise here, and she'd probably already drawn a gun if she had one.

It was time to do something daring.

And by daring, he probably meant stupid.

There was another tree about 10 feet away. A long ways to run, but it was at an angle to the window. If he could make it, he could move around the side, catch her where she didn't have a line of sight to him. He'd have to be fast and sudden. Whoever this was would give him maybe two seconds. He needed a distraction...he looked down at the candy bar, with maybe a little nub left on the end. Yes, this would do.

32...32...HUT!

He burst from cover, sprinting right through the killzone as he launched the inedible missile in this stranger's direction. With luck, she would have bad reflexes or flinch or...well, not have a gun at all. Until he could get his own gun, he needed all the luck he could get.

Something hit Catherine in the face. At first, she thought she might have just imagined it. It wouldn't be out of place, given that she hadn't gotten a good night's sleep in three days. For a few milliseconds after that she thought it might have been the rain starting up again. But rain didn't feel that heavy. Or horizontal.

Catherine blinked, before looking down at the thing that hit her, which had conveniently landed on the table. She stared at the thing for a second, trying to process what it was. Once she recognized it, her head whipped to the window. She didn't see anyone there standing there, but... it undoubtedly came from outside.

"Who's there?" she called, her voice betraying a hint of disbelief.

Also...

"...Why?"

He wasn't seen...good. Jeff took a moment to peek around the tree, fully aware that this meant that his shield was also protruding out into view. He could see that this girl looked panicked...maybe a bit confused? Point was, she wasn't sticking a gun out. Maybe she wasn't packing after all.

What was his next move...try to get a conversation going? Keep moving around? He'd already thrown away what could have been a useful bit of food, so he couldn't give up halfway through.

He broke cover, walking cautiously towards the side of the house, an eye on the window at all times.

"My name's Jeff Greene," he shouted, before breaking into a sprint the rest of the way and sliding over against the small building. He couldn't see into the window, but he could see around the side, watch for anyone trying to go through the front door. As he watched, waiting for her next move, he suddenly realized that he'd left an "and" hanging in the air. She'd asked two questions after all. No point in bullshitting or trying to walk around his intentions. He was never good at lying and it'd just sound fake and weird.

"Right now?" he said, matter-of-factly, "I'm looking for weapons. Tell me what you have, and if it sucks, I'll let you live."

Simple as that. He wasn't in it for the big kill count. That'd just be stupid and reckless. The only kill he needed was the one at the end. In the meantime, everything else was just preparation. If this girl didn't have anything that he wanted, there was no point in exerting himself for it.

Jeff Greene, and weapons, and... what?

Catherine didnt know how to respond. She looked down at the shiv, sitting on the table. Did it suck? What was the other boy's metric for a 'suck' weapon, then? If the boy already had... well, maybe not a gun. She didn't really think someone would need to find another weapon if they already had a gun... but well, was her knife better than whatever he had?

Could be. Maybe he had nothing at all. Could the bou really kill her unarmed?

Actually better not to think about that. Why play with that chance at all?

She quickly flicked her wrist, sending the shiv careening across, and then off, the table.

"I don't have a weapon," she said, as the shiv flew under a couch, "Had one. It was a lobster... like, alive. I let it go."

A lobster.

That was almost stupid enough to be real.

Jeff just stood silently against the wall, trying to rattle that information around his skull. To be honest, if he’d been issued a lobster...well, first off, he’d have been pissed, but after that, he’d have probably just tried to get some water boiling and eat it. That’s some good protein right there, not too big on the fat and pretty easy to digest. No seasoning, of course, and separating the meat from the shell would have been a pain, but...

Oh right, he was threatening someone’s life here. He worked his way around the wall so he was standing face to face on the opposite side of the window, holding his shield up and peeking around it.

“Well,” he said, “if you don’t have anything, that’s pretty sucky. Lucky you.”

He wasn’t going to try engaging in conversation. What was the point? Today was a day to get work done, and if she didn’t have anything for him, then he couldn’t be wasting his time. Instead, he just backed away, keeping an eye on her until he was out of possible throwing range, then he turned and picked up the pace as he distanced himself from the scene.

“Should have kept that lobster,” he called behind himself. “Could have pinched someone in the nuts.”

Maybe there were other uses for a crustacean, but nothing came to mind. Still, it was better than going empty-handed. In her present condition, Jeff couldn’t imagine this girl was long for this world.

She saw the boy, hiding behind the shield as he slowly backed away from the window. Catherine didn't say anything as he eventually left the area.

Only once he was gone did Catherine let out a breath. She slunk over to the couch, getting on all fours and reaching her hand under the couch to retrieve her shiv. She vaguely considered just leaving it, but...

Well...

Her hand stopped. Maybe she should leave it behind. What use did she have for it, yeah?

Right?

She blinked, before resuming her blind search for the weapon. Her hand eventually found it, and she pulled it out.

What use did she have for it now has the question. And while she didn't think she would ever use it, there was still that part of her mind that said she was better off with it.

She stood back up just as the speakers crackled to life. So it was time, then?

Catherine sat on the couch and listened as the names went by. This time, however, one name stood out to her, above all else.

Marco. Marco went and did it. He'd found Arjen, and he'd gotten his revenge.

So that was it, then? Maybe she should have stayed with him. Maybe this wouldn't have happened. Then again... maybe she would have been killed instead. Maybe it was too late to help him. Maybe it wasn't.

Catherine laughed. She started laughing as the speakers died down, her laugh sounding unnatural. Forced.

It was absurd. This whole thing was absurd. Marco was... Marco wouldn't have... but Marco just did.

Funny. Good joke. Life is strange sometimes, isn't it?

Her laughter died down. She felt empty inside, with nothing inside her except her darkest thoughts.

Freeing people... saving people...

She looked at the shiv. Then, the ceiling. She let the hand holding the shiv drop, landing on the couch with a thump.

((Adonis Cohen continued from Staring over Wonderland Wood's))

Adonis had been quiet while travelling with Myles and when the announcement had started up again; he had felt a wave of fear and guilt. Just hearing Tristan's name was a reminder of what he did and he just felt like he should give up on trying to survive. But.... He couldn't be that selfish, could he? He had to keep on going for Myles and he felt that he had to atone for his actions. But he didn't know how to. Also hearing that Marco had gotten his revenge on Arjen was a bit of a surprise and then he remembered that Marco had wanted to do it in the first place. What would Marco think of him for murdering someone...? How was Myles feeling over hearing Tristan's name again...? Was Adonis going to have Tristan's friends coming after him to avenge their fallen friend...?

He didn't know anymore.

I can't even imagine how my family is doing right now. I don't want to think about them right now and I need to concentrate on surviving this for as long as I can. Come on, Adonis!

"...Myles?"

He felt a lump in a throat and he felt himself trying to keep up a brave face, feeling the heaviness taking over on the inside more.

"...H-Hey, we should.... we should take a break. Right...?"

(Zachary Beck, continued from What’s This? Another Inner Turmoil Post? Who Would Have Guessed?)

Zach found himself back in the village once again. If he arrived at the infirmary at this moment, he’d have gone in a big circle. Regardless, he carried on, and so did the rain.

To cope with the weather, Zach had improvised a raincoat with his emergency blanket. It was a pain to keep wrapped around his body, but he wasn’t as soaked as the day before. And thankfully, he hadn’t caught a cold either. He kept his bag opened slightly, just enough to draw out his gun, just in case of an emergency.

Zach had his head lowered. He wasn’t entirely sure of what to do next. Zach had considered going back to the infirmary. However, what if Sean and the others were looking for him, would they think to look there? He could try somewhere else, like maybe the menagerie? That place wasn’t a danger zone anymore, right?

Just as Zach thought on his next destination, the little voice interrupted.

Look in front of you, dumbass!

Zach lifted his head and noticed two figures ahead. One was taller than the other and both were kinda familiar. Zach stopped and tensed up. His hand was near the handle of his gun, ready to whip it out if need be.

((Myles Roux continued from Staring Over Wonderland Woods))

"Hm?" Adonis's words reached Myles, but it took a minute for them to get through. "Oh, sure. A break."

They'd made it back to the village in their aimless wandering. There were no real memories here, just a night spent in relative peace. Tristan warm against his back.

There was nothing here, so it was fine for them to stop and hang out for a bit. Myles wished that he'd slept better, because a more well-rested Myles could probably find something to enjoy in Adonis finally figuring out their respective places in this arrangement, but he'd had too much on his mind. There was a lot to think about, and a lot to avoid thinking about.

Myles shrugged, gesturing at the rows of identical houses around them. "Pick one." The movement of his arms lifted the hem of his jacket, revealing the knife for a moment before it settled back into place.

((Brandon Murphy continued from Staring over Wonderland Wood's))

It had taken him a while to catch up to the two. They had circled back to a place he wished they hadn't, he had hoped for a bigger place that he could call his base, but this would have to do despire the bad memories. An image of the blood covered Ty flashed in his mind for a second before he swallowed and steeled himself. His role to play now.

Hugging one of the trees once again, he watched as they seemed to decide which of the houses to go into, once they did. He'd have his chance. Brandon knew he had a catch if he played this right and that wouldn't be too difficult once he moved in. Neither were well armed and both were going to be rattled after Tristan's death. That was his card to play.

There were stray thoughts along the way as he watched. Was he going to be recognised across the internet for this? He'd seen his fair share of SOTF stuff that the edgelords would post now and again, that could be him pasted across the net in shock images and gifs. He was not going to let that happen. The two boys in front of him were a testament to that.

Brandon Murphy is a survivor and he would prove it. If not to them then himself.

He shook his head and breathed slowly to himself. He was starting to go lose it from all this hiding. He needed to act soon.

Adonis felt himself stop breathing for a moment as he saw the knife again and he saw Tristan's face in front of him, making him want to curl up into a ball of a complete mess. But he had to keep it together and he didn't want to bring down the mood more. Okay, so they just needed to do to one of the houses to rest and then they could talk about what they were supposed to do next.

Okay, okay, Adonis. Just focus, focus.... Don't think about Tristan. Don't, don't, don't....

"This one." Adonis said with a weak smile as he pointed to the one that was the closest one to them and he thought that it looked better than the other houses. He wasn't sure how Myles felt about it; but he wanted to stay in Myles' good graces and he just didn't want Myles to see how close he was to crying once again. "Y-Yeah, this one seems like it's not bad to rest in...."

We'll be safe. I hope we really will be safe. I can't let anyone else touch Myles.... Uh, not like that. I can't get too overprotective over Myles right now. Ha-Haha....

Adonis' smile turned more warm as he was looking at Myles and he headed over to the house, stepping inside.

"Come on, Myles!"

It looks like neither of the guys in the distance noticed him, and they were taking shelter in one of the cabins. Good. Looks like Zach didn’t have to use his gun.

Zach was about to turn around when he noticed another figure, this one following behind the previous two. Zach wondered if they were with them, or maybe, were coming towards them with sinister motives.

Curiosity had overtaken Zach again. A part of him wanted to get closer to the cabin. Another part of him, however, was trying to dissuade him.

If you go over there, you could get seriously fucked.

Although, there was a chance things would not go to shit. Maybe they would have a friendly chat and Zach could be on his way. He had to know for sure. Zach closed in on the cabin the others were nestled in, hiding in the spaces between each other cabin, trying to be as discreet as possible.

((Hello losers, it's the new Catherine handler. The original quitter of sotf.))

After Jeff had left, Catherine sat there, waiting. She wasn't exactly waiting for someone or something to happen, but to get up. It was as if control had left her body momentarily and she needed a tiny push to go down the slide of action once again. It was strange, but there had been stranger thing happening.

For example, she knew for a fact she wasn't alone anymore.

It was that type of thing that motivated Catherine to get up and just get going. Normally, she wouldn't have panicked and rushed to a closet. Normally, she wouldn't hide behind those things that you could obviously see through if you got close enough. Normally, Catherine wouldn't be fearing for her life after hearing Adonis's voice.

It was another reminder of a mistake. She wasn't sure what was her mistake, but she knew she made one. Somewhere along the line, a mistake was made and put her on this path. Perhaps Jeff was right, perhaps she needed her lobster to pinch someone in the balls.

But right now, the only thing she could do is wait.

Once again, she wasn't sure why she was waiting.

"Sure, looks great." It looked more or less exactly like all the others that were intact, only hopefully it was one of the ones that didn't have bodies in it. They hadn't seen any yet, but Myles was sure there had to be some in the village by now. Probably some in all the places that people would gather to get out of the elements.

He let Adonis take the lead, of course, hanging back just in case trouble reared its head. Hoping that it wouldn't was probably too much to ask for. The world was playing with him, throwing him a bone here and there only to take it away again and probably laugh at his suffering.

Still, he asked. "Nobody home?" It was directed more at Adonis than anyone who might be inside. If there was somebody there, they ought to make themselves either useful or scarce. Myles wasn't feeling personable today.
