[open] oh god oh fuck oh god oh fuck

The waterfall overlook presents one of the best views of the island and its surrounding area if one isn't afraid of heights or slipping. The area around the waterfall itself is very rocky as a result of constant erosion from the river. Despite this, the land on either side of the river is home to lush vegetation as this area has remained mostly untouched by the actions of the community, who saw it as a place of natural beauty that was to be preserved.

Lucas Diaz pressed his newly cleaned glasses back onto his face and looked out onto the world, for the final time.

[B032 —- Lucas Diaz: Game Start]

It looked strangely peaceful to his eyes. Serene, almost. People hadn't started murking each other yet was why. He hadn't heard a gunshot yet, even if there had been a few screams of shithivefuckingmaggotsimgoingtodie. Including his own, which went something like, paraphrasing, "oh holy fucking shit, oh fuck, I'm going to die, dear Lord, thank you, this is all I've ever wanted, praise the god that doesn't exist hallelujah, shit fuck, oh my god," and such and such and such.

Milo probably didn't like that. Neither did his parents, or Ophelia, bless her gay heart. But that was other people! And if there was anything he learned in therapy, it was that the perceptions of other people did not matter. Nope! Not at fucking all. He'd yeet himself off this fucking waterfall and when he hit the base he'd break all his bones and drown, because he couldn't fucking swim, that's how much of a loser he was. Just days ago he was waggling dicks with the worst people alive and now he was going to die. Maybe that's how he worked himself up to do it. Some weird intuition in his brain knew he wouldn't have to live with the shame.

But he couldn't do it. Or, for some reason, he was hesitating. Tears running down his cheeks like some kind of coward baby, because he couldn't fucking work up the courage. This was the antidepressants talking, he told himself, that was the thing keeping him from dying and going into the sweet nothing of oblivion. Yup. And in a day or two, those would wear off, because he didn't have them on him anymore. All he had was some fuckin' Minecraft merch. Maybe he could stick the pickaxe up his ass, but that was all the use they had. Oh, and a weird hard plastic rod inside the sword that he could feel when he slapped it against his forehead around seventy six times when he woke up, but yeah, that was it.

So basically, what anyone sees when they walk by is me being a loser again, he thought, something they got enough of at home. Hopefully, that pisses someone off enough to just shoot me already.

His head was in his hands as he wept, cursing himself for being a fucking loser. What shitty luck he would have had if it existed, to be cursed with this situation. Maybe if he threw a Minecraft sword off the waterfall he'd feel better, but he felt too terrible to do that. And eventually he'd need to take a piss. And somebody would watch that. The waterfall was looking more and more appealing every moment.

Lucas stood up, shouted the word "FUCK!" really loud, and started crying again.

"Jesus Christ, you're pathetic."

B070 - DANE LENNOX: ISLAND START

And what a first encounter to have after waking up on hell island.

Dane was angry. Oh, he was seething. Everything he'd worked for in his life had been yanked out from under him. All of his effort, his discipline, was now for nothing. Now, he was stuck in a dead end situation with little chance of getting out. Dane knew that there were people from his class who hated him. Of course they would. It's easy to hate someone so above you, someone you could never hope to level with. He knew there was a non-zero chance that one or some or all of those people might try and kill him. But he had a gun. And if he had to use it, he would.

Not that he would actively stoop to their level of course. He wasn't a murderer, and he wasn't going to be. He wasn't going to stoop down to their level.

But... the matter in front of him.

Lucas Diaz was not a person Dane knew well. Of course he wasn't. Dane didn't feel like knowing one poor kid from another would do him any good. And looking at the boy in front of him, he felt that that had been a wise choice. But still...

Dane sighed, annoyance evident in his posture, his face, everything.

"Are you even trying?" he said coldly.

Lord knows Dane couldn't stand people who didn't try.

Lucas froze up, unsure if he was hearing a voice in his head already or if there was someone behind him. He took a step back from the edge and turned around.

Facing him was a literally-who with weird glasses and a pissed off look on his face and a motherfucking gun. Oh, shit, was this it? Did he die this way? To some random? He'd really, honestly prefer it if Charelle or Yuko killed him. That'd be poetic, in a fucked up shitty edgy thirteen year old way. And, shit, was Ji-hyun on this trip? Both of the Christensen's were, right? They could do it to him, and it'd be like a book or something. Some fucking movie. Maybe a friend could do it, but, this guy?

"They," he said, voice catching in his throat. The state he was in was terrible, terrible, terrible. He needed a drink. The alcohol prep pads in his medical kit could be eaten later, when he wasn't being stared down by a big fucking guy with a big fucking gun.

"They fucking gave me Minecraft shit, man!" Lucas finally cried, new tears running down his face, "How the fuck am I supposed to try with a shitty fucking, a fucking, FUCK!"

He wiped at his face with his hands, which came back snotty and gross. Those got wiped on his shorts.

"You try 'trying,'" he managed, "when all you get is something that just tells you flat out that you're a joke!"

And suddenly, the sobs quieted down and gave way to shaky, awful, hoarse laughter.

"As if I n-needed a f-fucking reminder!"

Wouldn't it have just been the worst if she'd fallen on the way up here? Funny, yes, but there was a time for pratfalls and a time for quick wit. If she was honest with herself, this wasn't either, but she wasn't prepared to do anything else just yet.

As her glasses misted up from the force of the water falling and her ears took in the difference in opinion of two boys she couldn't put a name to off to the top of her head, all she could do was...

G71 - Sakurako A. Jackson - Game Start

Witness just how how beautiful this place was. By itself, it wouldn't have been a bad place for a class trip. Taking a heavy breath, she approached her classmates carefully, focusing on keeping her footing sure and steady. It was a long way down, and there were no barrels to make taking a trip over the falls a fun prospect. It was tough making her voice carry over the rushing water considering how sore it was, but she did her best.

"You're not any more of a joke than the people that gave you that. Don't they know that Fortnite is what's in? It would have gone with their dumb rules and everything!"

Either would have been less fundamentally intimidating than the weapon the other guy carried. He seemed more grumpy than anything, but did he call himself showing off? Tacky, tacky... she couldn't help but chuckle.

"Any chance that thing'll just pop a flag out instead of... you know, a real bang?"

"So, what are you going to do? Give up?" is all Dane said in response.

The boy in front of him was honestly acting like a waste of space right now. Lack of a good weapon wasn't even an excuse when the objective was "not dying". Sure, if his aim was to kill people then having a bad draw would be a hindrance. But that wasn't the name of the game. Survival was. And all you needed to survive was to be smart. If the boy in front of him wasn't going to see that then honestly it wasn't going to be long until his name was on the announcements as a victim.

Or maybe that's what he wanted. And that was probably even more pathetic than the crying.

He turned to the newcomer. Another girl he wasn't familiar with. She asked him about his weapon, made a joke about it. Dane squinted slightly.

"Is this a joke to you?" he asked, "You think this is funny?"

Push, push, push.

If she just kept on pretending this was just the worst shopping trip in decades - nay, centuries, it'd be bettter than focusing on the fact that some bishes were about to go crazy and start maiming people.

In no way, shape, form, prayer, or incantation did Adele support that kind of mindset.

[G068 - Adele Jones - START]

Part of Adele simply wanted to scream, to let out all her anger and shoot some targets, but here on death island, that wasn't exactly a possibility. besides, that was what a crazy-ass person would do, and she was not crazy. Just rightfully pissed, because her life was being taken away from her for the amusement of the weird, sick people who would actually watch this shit. What, to go laugh at the fat girl trying to push a shopping cart up a rocky incline? What was she, some kind of comic relief for them to laugh at be amused by? No, Adele Jones was 170-something pounds of woman, and she was not going to take being disrespected like this lightly.

Besides, she swam, she danced, she fought for the underprivileged, so yeah, she could push a damn cart, even if it was crammed with both of her bags. She was a big girl, a strong girl, and big girls weren't about to cry, not when these terrorists were watching to see who would crack and who wouldn't. Adele was a - the daughter of cops, okay? She would not be shaken and stirred over something just like this.

No point in giving in. Not when they had all of these people, all of these people who cared, and weren't just gonna go ham right off the bat. Some would, duh, would be stupid not to think that, but people wouldn't, too. They'd be hoping, they'd be praying, they'd be working to find a better way. The best way.

Presumably, it wasn't gonna involve continuing to push this cart, but she was going to get it up to that darn waterfall, mmhmm, or she was going to die trying. Well, hopefully not actually die, because she would've at least appreciated enough time to get out of these wedges. Looked damn good, yeah, but they were beginning to dig into her feet, and that wasn't good at home, and it wasn't good here.

Adele was still trying to get up this great big incline, get all her stuff there, just to prove she could, when she began hearing some choice words over the rushing water.

She continued pushing, hands on metal bars slowly ratcheting up the rocks, the sounds of the metal jangling on the jagged edges, until she came to a point where everything was relatively stable, and-yep, there was a guy with a gun. One of those rich douches who liked to walk around as if he owned the school. Name with a D or something, probably real pretentious, and there was one of the million Lucases, who was quiet, yep, and Sakurako! Who was actually someone who she spoke to outside of all this. So, yeah, one out of three. Not very good odds.

Still probably best she was directly behind 'Rako, and neither of the guys with guns and all, and she would've really mcuh preferred finding Joanne, 'Nisha, maybe even Bree and finding some way the hell out of here, but she wasn't just about to stand up and watch shit go down. Wasn't the good way.

"What the hell," she began, looking D-bag straight in the eyes, back straight as it possibly could be while still gripping onto a cart. "Are you doing?"

Normally, he would've taken time to admire the view. And for a few seconds, he did. After that, though, he had to remind himself that he shouldn't do that all day.

Those few seconds were all somebody needed to catch him off guard.

((BLAKE DAVIS V7 START))

It would've been idiotic of Blake if he wasn't keeping a watchful eye on everything around him. Why wouldn't he? Everybody was dropped off somewhere in the middle of nowhere and only one person can go home! Who knows where the hell they might be?

Even then, he couldn't believe it. Out of every school those damn terrorists could've picked, they chose this one? Couldn't they prey on some other district? What made them so special?

Whatever the case is, he was here. Nothing could change it.

He made sure to grab his bag and map before heading for the closest thing to him: the waterfall. After a bit of walking, he saw some figures in the distance, one of them holding a gun in his hands. Squinting his eyes, he recognized that one person as the familiar stick-up-his-ass look of Dane Lennox. Why the hell did he, of all people, get a gun? Was it because of how much of a prick he is?

Adele, on the other hand, was a pleasant sight. He wouldn't call her a close friend, but she seemed to be friendly enough. He didn't know much about the brown haired guy-Lucas, he remembered, but he definitely knew the other girl, Sakurako. She was one of the more reliable ones around school, and nice at that. She can be annoying in class, though, but she was clearly messing around. So that's them against Lencocks, unless that other guy wants to get involved.

This might be less risky than he thought. Even if he isn't itching for a fight, this might make the others trust him. But still, he should be careful. It only takes one itchy finger and a bullet might go through his head.

He approached them by the side, keeping a respectable distance away just in case.

"What's going on here?"

Lucas stood dumbfounded at the waterfall's edge as more and more heads pulled up. It was dumb as fuck of him to believe that he'd have any peace and quiet up here while he considered the strong appeal of a self-yeet into oblivion, but this sure was a lot more people than he expected. The tears began to slow down. He couldn't do anything with this many eyes watching him, and he couldn't do anything in general for the next few days.

"The jokes that gave me this shit," Lucas said, as he walked over to where his bag was on the ground, "can get their shit together enough to pull this game off, several times over."

For emphasis, he pulled out the pickaxe they had given him. "You all see this, right? Tell me what is wrong with this picture."

And the two other rando's had much, much more boring quips. They just wanted to know what was going on. At least Ms. Karakorum over here had something kinda funny to say even if it was a little tasteless and tactless and a teensy weensy bit mean. He liked her, a little. Using funny jokes and whatever the fuck to defuse a situation like that showed the mark of an actual human being.

But look, one of the rando's had a shopping cart! It looked like he wasn't the only totally unlucky one on this hell-hole. The shopping cart had some utility, but it wasn't a gun or a sword or a bomb or anything. He briefly imagined his prospects of trade, and then imagined how badly he'd be laughed at if he seriously pursued them. What did he seriously have to offer? He could write people poems, if they gave him a pencil and paper to do it on. Maybe he'd piss someone off with his uselessness so badly that they'd do him the favor of arranging a death worth dying to.

That is, if Lil Uzi Vert didn't fucking shoot him first.

"And this is what they do with all those resources. Respect where it's due, but it seems like such a waaaste."

The urge to try to make herself understood was strong, but it seemed a hopeless endeavor. Not just because she barely understood herself at times, but because the amount of pantomime it would take to get her point across would surely send her flying over the waterfall. Even shifting her weight from foot to foot with the bags strapped to her was making her a bit nervous at th-

Was that squeaking? Ah, must have just been her shoes.

"Okay, neither of you think this is even a little funny? We literally just left the capital of the good old US of A and got kidnapped, what are the odds of that?"

Even in the worst of times, people always wanted her to get serious.

Tilting her head back, Sakurako blinked and kept blinking, and just like that three became five. A group implied cohesion that didn't seem to be happening now, but the familiarity of Adele and Blake's voices made her feel a little better about things. She didn't look back at the pair just yet, but her wave in that direction was definitely friendly. Almost cheerful, if not for the odd little tangle they'd all found themselves in.

"Ah... grumpy guns is okay, I think? Maybe dickish, but I can only blame 'm so much at a time like this. You guys okay so far?"

Where were all these people coming from? The surrounding had suddenly gone from holding two people to holding five. And of course all of them were people Dane wasn't well acquainted with. Which meant that he was the only one on his side.

From what he could see, though. None of them had the firepower that he did. If any of them tried to attack him, they'd regret it.

The corners of his mouth twitched upward, imperceptibly short, before they return to their neutral position. He still wasn't happy about it, but the fact that he had a real gun made him feel better, feel more secure, if only just a little bit.

But... questions were being asked. Dane pushed up the bridge of his glasses.

"What's happening," he said, motioning to Lucas, "is that this kid here is throwing his life away. Being in such a shitty situation doesn't mean you get to not try."

Dane grimaced slightly.

"The name of the game is survival. I'm not going to sit around waiting for someone else to come and kill me," he continued, "I would advise you all to do the same. If you've resolved yourself to just lie down and die, then get out of my sight."

So, here was the thing: Adele had a headache, because she hadn't been able to have good cup of joe in more than a few days. Here was the second thing: That headache was presently getting much, much worse, because some entitled a-hole refused to shutup about how they were ll giving up and laying down, and no one should've been here for that. no one should've supported that, because it was just such a stupid thing. Obviously, what was most stupid about the whole thing was that he was doing this all while thinking he was probably helping them, advising them on this new life of island murder or whatever, but it was not right. It was not good. It was certainly not godly.

Blake was there too, okay, if kinda whitebread, but she had to go rub her head in a vain attempt to get the pulsating throbbing feeling out of her head, because people were joking, too, with their fake pickaxes and all of it just made her want to scream. She was going to help people here, get people out of this place, but she wasn't going to be able to do it if people were acting like damn fools and managing to make a really awful just that much worse, because it hurt, a lot, and she wanted to keep it in but-

"Can you all just pipe down for a minute?" It came out, suddenly, a torrent of words like a burst water pipe, a pure stream of thoughts into words she hadn't really thought of saying. Well, she thought about them, but not of saying them, because she was meant to be the calm one here. She was meant to be the chill one here, and okay, she could still be that, but she had to take control. Had to find some foundation.

"We," Adele said, taking one hand off the cart to point at Dane. He started this, hadn't he? He was the one who came in all high and mighty with his gun, which he probably didn't know how to shoot because most spoiled rich kids had no idea what to do with it, yup. "Are going to find a way off of this place, and you?"

Her eyes narrowed, and maybe it was the anger at the bastards who put them here, or the suddenness of this situation turning mere irritation into aggression bu she was not going to let him speak. Wasn't going to let him spew his shit.

A finger, that finger, no not that one because that would be unholy, but her index finger, was raised right at D-bag.

"You'll be about to find out what a shopping cart at ramming speed's gonna do, unless you put down the gun and get the hell away."

Grumpy is one way to put it. But that's likely the general attitude of a lot of people right now, to put it mildly. Maybe Blake could've tolerated him at least for a bit.

But after hearing Dane talk down to Lucas like that and acting all high and mighty, as if being kidnapped isn't traumatizing for people, he couldn't let it slide. Especially when there was a good chunk of people. If Blake lets him get away with that, he's going to look weak and someone who can be pushed around. Like hell he was going to let that happen.

Even if Dane had a point.

"You know what," Blake said in a raised voice as he walked closer to the group, "you're right. We shouldn't just let ourselves be picked off."

He then pointed towards Lucas.

"But give him a break! We didn't exactly to get sign up to be here, and a good chunk of us aren't exactly ready to just murder people! So why don't you lay off and-"

He didn't get to finish when Adele yelled out. Gotta say, he didn't expect her to. Well, scratch that, it was a little expected given the circumstances. What was unexpected, however, was her threatening to ram Dane with the cart. Really? What the hell is she doing, threatening the guy with the gun? Is she asking to get shot?

To be honest, he didn't know how Dane was going to react to that even with his dickish attitude. He was probably going to threaten her back, but was he really going to follow through with it if shit hits the fan? He looked like the guy more worried about getting his blazer dirty rather than actually fighting.

One way or another, though, it wasn't looking good. Considering that someone has to get killed by the end of the day, it's better to be prepared. He divided his attention between Dane and Adele and waited to see what they were going to do.

"Stop talking about me like I'm not standing right in fucking front of you, guys," Lucas said, sticking his hands in his pockets, "It's not cool." Things were escalating, and Lucas really just hated it. He wanted to be alone, or with someone that wasn't nuts, and cry for a bit, and maybe have someone cradle his head in their lap before tragically and emotionally putting him out of his misery. Was there someone here that he wouldn't mind doing that to him? The plucky Krakatoa girl—some of his classmates had strange names, okay?—seemed pretty chill, and maybe he'd just, y'know, ask her to spend some time somewhere else with him later. Maybe she had a gun, or she'd be okay with choking him out. Either way, he wanted to get to know her a little better before he metaphorically drop-kicked the proverbial bucket into the figurative stratosphere, because she seemed pretty nice, and was kinda cute.

He cursed himself for the lack of booze to make this whole thing go down a little easier. The thought of the alcohol pads in his medical kit got a little more tempting, but he still wasn't desperate enough for it yet. The thought briefly flashed through his mind that there might be someone on this island with something to ingest. It wasn't unlikely that if the terrorists had the sense of humor that precluded Minecraft imagery, they might have thought to give some people some alcohol, right? Or some drugs, or something?

And with that, a new objective revealed itself; find some booze, get wasted one last time, and then go out in a blaze of glory. He might have to substitute 'a blaze of glory' for 'the most pathetic way possible' but that was also fine, and seemed to work as a grand close to the entirety of his life too. It wasn't really a life of glory that he lived in the first place. If this was it, things should end in the same fashion as they had proceeded for the last few years.

"Hey, you," he said, pointing roughly over in Sakurako's direction, "you seem like you're handling this shit pretty well, right?"

"My question is, how the fuck are you taking this so lightly?"

"Why haven't you been crying like I just was?"

He let those last few words hang in the air before he realized that he sounded like an accusatory dick.

"I mean, I'm just curious," he added, sniffling, "like, no offense, or anything."

If she blinked fast enough, maybe everything would just calm down a little. It wasn't like she didn't understand all the frustration and rising hostility, but it was just ratcheting up so fast. Had she been at home, it wouldn't have been anything at all to get them to slow down, even laugh and tell her to shut up. Such was the life of the person she'd chosen to be. But now she didn't have a lot of those, did she? Shaking her head, glancing back at the one-woman supermarket sweeper, Sakurako giggled even with the tears that streamed down her face.

"I'm gonna have to ask you not to do that, Addie-girly. Not because it wouldn't be effective, but doing that would do the same thing to you as it would to him. There's no way you could stop with that momentum, and I'm sure he knows it, just like I'm sure G.G.'s aware that shooting a gun that powerful would make him lose his balance. Doing something like fighting up here's just m.a.d.ness, right Lucas?"

There was no need to shout, though her voice was in danger of giving out from the strain of making sure it carried. Facts were facts, a stalemate was a stalemate, but she'd be willing to bet that none of them were ready to set it off. There were people in school that didn't have the self-control of a puppy in front of a new toy, but the simple fact that they were just talking meant present company was likely excluded. See, she hadn't wanted to think what was going on everywhere else on this island at all. It could have been all jokes and showmanship, but now...

Sakurako turned her face and attention to Minecraft. Maybe, just maybe, he'd pick up what she was trying to gently set down.

"No fences taken. But why do you think my voice sounds like garbage, man? Wasn't from swallowing swords." Heh.

Sadly, neither screaming herself hoarse or cracking wise could stop the thoughts running in the back of her head. Waiting to be heard. Begging to break out, like the prisoners they all were. While the big gun was unsettling, and this whole scenario was horrifying, just now was the first time in a long time Sakurako felt like shoving her hands over her mouth. Then she could tape them down. Maybe someone even had super glue. Nevertheless, her lips persisted flapping, the rush of words surging as fast as the water making it's voice known in front of him.

"Most people will take a sure shot over a possibility as far as escape is concerned, even though we'd have at least three months if we stuck to the strict letter of only one of us dying a day. Resources would be the toughest part to deal with, but I'm sure the lack of entertainment would bore our kidnappers enough to personally intervene. I know we aren't a school of future MENSA members; numbers would make that less important, so we could focus on figuring out the two main things keeping us here.

But without the class working together, time isn't on our side. We'll never be in better shape mentally than right now, jacked up as that is."

Orange you glad she didn't say banana?

She was talking about escape, he was talking about murder, she was threatening to charge him. Dane shook his head. At least someone was making some sense, even if was Little Miss Jokester over there.

And Lucas was still being a pathetic little baby.

Dane's head shook again. It felt it was going to do that a lot, before the day was done.

"Ramming, murder, is all you people think about violence?" he said, his voice trying very hard to sound calm. Truthfully, he was probably the most calm person in this scene, but that wasn't really saying much.

Dane pointed to Sakurako with his free hand.

"She's right, by the way. I mean, about the whole logistics with the shopping cart," he continued. He wasn't going to entertain the thought of escape because, really? These damned things around all of their necks would prevent that in a heartbeat, and did anyone here really think they'd be able to get them off? Realistically, even if someone here managed to figure how such a high-tech device worked, he really doubted that those terrorist fucks would just sit around and twiddle their thumbs while they got to work getting them off. Dane was all for people working hard and making an effort, but that effort had to actually lead somewhere, and right now the only thing Dane saw it leading to was death.

Dane looked to each of them in turn. He shifted his weight slightly. He wasn't going to use the gun. Not unless he had to.

"You really think we'll get off this island?"

Because, honestly, if they did, they were stupider than he originally thought.
