#2: In this waking hell I am

The deep, dark jungle finally begins to grow lighter, and then, seemingly out of nowhere, the coastline appears. Nothing, except miles and miles of white sand. It seems so out of place on an island which reeks of death.

[Julie continued from The Marsh. I think]

Sato was frantic. Moving quickly, he navigated through the jungle as best he could, dark eyes darting between the map in his hand and his current surroundings.

Search as he might, his sister was nowhere to be found.

Somehow this situation sounded all too familiar in the world of SOTF. Someone searching for a person dear to them, only to have it all end in tragedy was a scenario that seemed almost a cliche in the series. Hell, wasn't there a guy who died trying to find his younger sister when she wasn't on the island?

So what if it's turned into an old story that's been made and told before, Sato could care less about that right now. He was single-minded in his search for his twin sister, Rio.

People would think it odd of him to be concerned about someone who had outright bullied him for the better part of his life, but how could he think about that right now? She was his sister, and a world without her would be like an Earth without a sky. Sato couldn't imagine coming home everyday receiving a drop-kick (from hers truly) to the forehead upon stepping through the front door. She had taken YEARS off of his life, but she was his sister, and he had to find her...

He didn't even want to think about the game. Killing other students? That was already out of the question for him. No, the game called SOTF was something beyond his care, out of his hands, and none of his concern. His own classmates were killing each other, and as much as it tore him apart to think about it, he simply couldn't let it occupy his thoughts right now.

Sato emerged from the forest, meeting an expanse of white sand... for a moment he thought he'd stepped out of a dream, it was hard to believe that he was still on the same blood-covered corpse-strewn island when there was simply this deserted, relatively untouched shoreline....completely void of life.

The voice of the surf was almost meditative. He wondered if death was this peaceful.

A groan interrupted his thoughts.

Looking sidelong, he frowned slightly, before something caught his attention, and hurriedly he made his way across the sand towards the body lying on the ground.

He recognized the student almost immediately by her tall physique and coppery hair. He'd only spoken to Julie Mikan a few times on occasion, and Sato noticed that she seemed to be a rather solitary individual: taciturn and stoic in outward appearance, and rather reluctant to associate with others.

Somewhat like himself, Sato thought to himself.

He was more concerned of the fact that she was injured, and badly it seemed. He noted a sparse trail of blood which indicated the direction she'd arrived from.

Come to think of it...wasn't her name on the announcements? Didn't she kill someone? Two people, even?

Without a second thought, Sato let the spade fall and dropped to one knee. Whisking out his daypack so it was in front of it, he quickly unzipped it open and pulled out the first-aid kit.

Looking at her, Sato knew she needed help, and fast. Her wound looked as though they'd been left untended for a while, and as such Sato worked quickly. He'd treated his own injuries in kendo, but of course he had never had such experience with gunshot wounds. Nevertheless, he worked as best he could, disinfecting her wounds and bandaging them up. All the while she remained perfectly still. Sato noted the butterfly knife in her hand, for maybe a second or two out of curiousity....but then turned his attentions back towards treating her wounds.

"...I think....you'll be alright now," He remarked quietly, though he probably couldn't hear her.

It surprised even himself that he wasn't questioning or thinking second thoughts about helping this person he barely knew...one who was a killer, even.

Well, it wasn't as though she was a complete stranger. As mentioned before, they'd talked on occasion. Sato never thought she was a bad person. Just a bit....detached. Maybe lonesome, even.

He'd lost track of the time before he realized...he had to keep looking for Rio.

Julie had yet to wake, but Sato had done all he'd been able.

"Sorry... I gotta look for my sis. You'd understand, right?" The look on his face was apologetic as he picked up his daypack, and his assigned weapon, and quickly took off again along the shoreline.

Only a few seconds later did, Julie awoke to the feeling of dulled pain in her injuries, and freshly applied bandages around them.

Groggy, disoriented, and completely bewildered at the sight of her newly treated injuries, she held her head shakily, looking around.... that's right, she'd fainted from all that running, and the anemia. And yet somehow she was still alive...

Ugh...was that sand crawling up the leg of her jeans?

...She shook her head to clear it, and then looked around frantically? Who? Who was the one who looked after her? The only person she could think of was Adam...to be fair, she'd treated him before. But then again, she'd also shot at him too...

Julie could see the figure in the distance ahead, someone she didn't quite recognize, as his back was towards her. "H-hey! Hey you!" She called after him. But of course he was too far away to hear.

And with that, Julie was left to her own to come up with an explanation for this unexpected benevolence... why help her? HER, of all people? There was no answer for it, no reason she could think of. It was hard to believe, and it didn't make any sense to her at all. She didn't deserve this, she ought to have been left there, no one had any reason to help her, and if she was a sinner damned of her right to live then she ought not to have been given that second chance.

And yet...

Somehow a wave of emotions hit her hard there and then. Lacking the strength to move from where she'd woken up, she sat up and curled her arms around her knees. Making sure she was alone, Julie lowered her head, and let the tears come for as much and for as long as they needed to.

[Sato continued elsewhere]

(Dominica Shapiro continued from Hatred)

Leaving Matthew behind was probably the worst decision she could have ever made. Dominica Shapiro had just realized this detail but it was far too late to change her mind and go back. For a time it was as if she had forgotten why she was running. She KNEW why she had left in the first place. She had been going for more than thirty minutes so no matter how she looked at it she would have caught up with whoever she was chasing. Either that or she had lost the trail completely and was now wandering aimlessly. Dominica had a strong urge to keep going, to keep stumbling forever with no reason to go on. The gun she had wasn't helping matters either.

She found herself on the verge of fainting, her heart pounding like a drum against her chest. She winced slightly, her whole body propping up against a nearby tree, Her legs felt like they were going to give out from under her but she found the strength to keep that from happening. What was the point in trying? It felt like a fruitless venture, her stumbling on like a drunken fool. Dominica had found some semi balance of hope, a shimmer of light in her dark world but was that enough to contradict her good sense? Certainly not. In any case, she had wandered too far off to simply just walk back.

She pushed her whole body off the tree trunk, finding herself able to stand up straight with ease. Walking forward was a completely different story but she was still able to keep herself upright for the most part. She finally reached the opening from the trees.

The beach was so bright it could blind someone. It glowed in the darkness of night and not even the dark clouds hovering over it could do anything to cloak it. Dominica had never been to the beaches covering the strip of land, and she had just assumed it was like any other beach. She was wrong in that case, but the beach wasn't memorizing by any length. In any case, it was enough to distract her. Through the rain, Dominica could hear something. In reality the rain was falling to hard and she was too far away to actually recognize them as sobs, but she could hear something distinct in any case. She looked to her right, then to her left.

"Is... somebody there?"

She looked around, finally noticing a body curled up against the sand. The figure was far away from where she was standing, but it still stood out from the bright colored sand. Dominica stared for what seemed like the longest time. It could have just been another body. It probably WAS another body. The sobs however stuck out in her mind and it became more and more impossible to shake the feeling she had in her back.

Dominica felt that something was caught in her throat. "Uhh... H-Hello?"

Matthew had not followed her like a fleeting sheep. She frowned. The only thing her eyes had to look at was her eyes staring at Julie. For the first moment in days, Dominica was actually alone. She had no allies in sight.

And she didn't enjoy it one single bit.

Upon sensing the presence of another, Julie's head snapped up suddenly in surprise. What an idiot she'd been! If she kept letting her guard down, it wouldn't take long until she ended up dead!

And she'd rather end up dead than be caught crying of all things.

She quickly got up, trying not to wince too visibly as her weight transferred onto her injured ankle. Though it had been treated relatively well by...her unknown benefactor, it still caused Julie an irritating amount of discomfort.

Tightening her grip against her butterfly sword for a bit of security, though knowing it probably wasn't fair game against....a SPEARGUN, of all things, she looked directly towards...

"D-Dominica Shapiro," she said, trying to keep her voice calm and even. Julie hoped for the sake of NOT looking like easy prey that her eyes and face weren't too red from crying. This girl, for whatever reason, had killed a number of times... whether or not she was a player, well...Julie would soon find out, surely enough.

"....What do you want? Are you looking for someone else to off? I think you should look elsewhere. I'm NOT in the mood for dying right now."

Dominica wasn't here to kill anyone. She was conflicted, her mind a cage filled with fluttering birds that were pecking at her thoughts. She was lost. She came to the coast because she just arrived there. Dominica, for all intent and purposes, had no evil intentions. No, she was sure killing was out of the question. The thought never crossed her mind.

Are you looking for someone else to off? I think you should look elsewhere. I'm NOT in the mood for dying right now."

Until Julie sent Dominica crashing back down into the real world. That was when the thought crossed her mind. In fact it was hard to stop herself from pulling the trigger right then and there.

"Don't. Patronize. Me." She flashed her canines at the other girl in a sudden rush of anger, her aim with the machine gun coming to rest dangerously close to Julie's head. "I don't know who the hell you are but if there's something I do know, it's that you're in no position to be snide. I think a bullet from this gun, just one, could end you. Don't want to, but my finger might accidentally slip."

A thought occurred: Dominica could just kill the woman. After all she did hint at the fact that Dominica had killed before. Why not give her what she so desired? Besides Julie looked dreadful and five-to-one she wanted someone to end all of her suffering. If Dominica did kill her maybe it would be considered honorable. But that would be dishonest, and Dominica had promised herself that she would not kill anyone else who was helpless or (in Julie's case) cornered, like she had the first two. So no matter how much Dominica (or Julie for that matter) wanted to, killing was not an option. Not at the time, anyway.

"..." It was awhile before anyone said anything. "Who are you? You seem to know my name, know what I've done but I can't say the same. What's your name?"

"You know what?" Dominica growled. "Forget it. I have no time to deal with the likes of you." And she turned and stumbled away towards the sea of trees in front of her.

Joseph Hurst was crouched in the thick foliage of the jungle, the coastline just up ahead. All around him Squad 3 remained motionless, blended into the jungle itself. They had been like this for almost eight minutes now, and the men were beginning to grow restless. They would have to wait though, because Joseph was known for his precautions and safety. He didn't want to see anybody die, for at the age of sixty four, he had seen his fair share of bloodshed.

Sixty four and leading a squad. Newcomers, if they didn't respect authority would always challenge Joseph, and he would put them to the ground easy enough. For while he was old, Joseph did what he did very well. Exceptionally well he thought. He didn't take unnecessary risks, but he wasn't a coward either. He would face any enemy, anywhere, and one look into his old brown eyes and you would see years full of hatred, and at the same time compassion. It was that compassion which led Joseph to keep his men at a hold for going on...nine minutes now. They were on an island full of armed students, and while the squad themselves were heavily armed and armored, accidents could happen.

Joseph had deep wrinkles in his face, and while he kept his gray hair cut short, he also had a large full facial gray beard, which he kept as trimmed as he wanted to.

The reason for the stop was because he had heard someone moving through the jungle, and when he was satisfied whoever it was had moved on, it was time to head onto the beach. Maybe Garnett was there. Holding out his hand, Joseph motioned for everyone to stand up. He then motioned silently towards the coast. It was time to move out. Moving silently through the jungle, Joseph and his squad appeared on the coast, and Joseph's eyes shot towards Julie Mikan.

Julie was alone, and after Dominica took off, she thought of where to go. Maybe getting off this beach was the smart thing to do, but where? She wasn't heavily armed, only holding her butterfly sword. She would have to move, as hard as it seemed to be, she had to find others. She had to find safety.

That's when the armed men seemed to float from the jungle. Standing before her, Julie's mind raced. Help? The terrorists? Gripping her sword, Julie raised it and pointed it at the men before her. They were too far away for her to even make a threat to them.

"Who are you!?"

Joseph glanced at his men.

"Hold your fire, she may know something."

Joseph, leading the squad silently moved closer to the girl. His assault rifle was aimed at her, and so was everybody elses.

No accidents.

Joseph looked at Julie and studied her. She was tall, she could be a dancer. Maybe not. Joseph didn't like to think about what the students. Whether he agreed or didn't agree, the fact was he was being payed to do what he did best. So he would do it to the best of his abilities.

"Have you seen another squad of soldiers like us? Have you heard of anyone named Garnett before?"

Julie backed away, fearful, her sword still pointed at the men before her. She shook her head.

"No...Who are you? Are you going to hurt me?"

Joseph looked at the girl and said, "Sorry, you must return to the game now."

With that Joseph signaled for his men to return to the jungle. The hunt for Garnett wasn't over yet. As everyone turned around and preceded to march back into the jungle, Julie called out for them.

"Wait! Are you with Danya!?!"

Joseph stopped. Damnit, the girl was easy pickings on this island. If a true psycho found her, she would be tortured. That was no way for anyone to go.

Joseph Hurst muttered under his breath, "I'm sorry about this...it's easier for you this way."

With that, Joseph turned around and took three steps forward. Julie didn't even have time to react before Joseph brought his assault rifle up and pulled the trigger, the rounds tearing into Julie.

She didn't feel a thing.
