One Step Forward...

Two Steps Back

Overlooked by large cliffs to the north and surrounded by tall trees to the south, the lagoon was formed ages ago when a tsunami hit the island. Since then, it's become an untouched beauty of the island... but be mindful of the lagoon's beautiful waters. You never know who might sneak up from behind and drown you in them.

(Jimmy Trejo continued from Falling Down)

Jimmy was still fuming when he arrived at the Lagoon. After all his time on the island, constantly encountering danger at every single turn, the half-blind guy had determined that enough was enough. If someone wanted to kill him at this pit stop, then they would find themselves under attack themselves. In the meantime, though, Jimmy decided that he would take a rest and get his bearings again. He couldn't allow himself to lose control to the point where he stormed right into a bullet. Not only would that accomplish nothing, but it would also be a terrible way to go. After surviving for so long, there was no point in losing his head and then, well, losing his head.

Whoever killed that kid better watch out though. If I find him, then he's dead. No talking about why he did it, no negotiating. Just BAM, and dead.

Sitting down on the ground next to the lagoon, Jimmy noticed that there were lots of bodies floating around in there. They were probably all dead, and that realization made Jimmy tuck his knees into himself. Every single place on this island was now defiled by the dead. There was no place to get away from it and relax. "This is sick," he mumbled. "How could people fall so low?" It made him feel somewhat sickened to think about how many potential murderers he'd sat calmly next to in class. If he'd known what would happen, would he have been able to be friendly with any of them? Probably not.

Suddenly, the loudspeakers on the island piped up, interrupting Jimmy's thoughts. Listening to the long list of names rattled off by this game's founder, the half-blind man was amazed. So many names of people he'd never even talked to. It sounded like more than thirty of them had died in the last two days alone. Staring straight ahead at the fuzzy shapes bobbing in the Lagoon, Jimmy stuck his head between his knees and rocked back and forth.

I wasn't in this class long enough. I should have gotten to know these people. Maybe if I had become friends with them, I would have looked for them. Maybe I could have saved them from dying. Maybe...

Who was he kidding? Jimmy couldn't save anyone. He could barely keep himself alive. If he had tried to save any of those people, he probably would have become a name himself to be rattled off by the sarcastic voice of this Danya fellow. It was for the better that Jimmy hadn't come into the semester too soon. That was likely how he had lived this long. It was also probably the reason why he had the friends that he did, because he hadn't inadvertently befriended anybody who would have offended his two companions. Speaking of which, where were Lyn and Eddie? Turning around, and trying to hide any tears that had come up, Jimmy called out to the woods at large, "LYN! EDDIE! Are either of you guys still there?"

{{continued from Falling Down}}

"I'm here."

Laeil emerged from the brush, approaching Jimmy. She had been following after him, keeping some distance between the two of them to let him work out his little anger problem, and as they reached the lagoon, she simply stood back until the screech of the nearby speakers signaled the morning announcements. The sheer number of casualties listed in the announcements surprised her. Things were really starting to pick up, and if they kept up like this, it wouldn't be long before they reached the end. She breathed a sigh of relief as Melina wasn't mentioned. If she got bumped off by someone else, she wasn't sure how she'd react. I'm going to have to find her soon...

As she stepped out from underneath the trees she noticed something strange about the rain. Namely, that it wasn't there. Looking up at the sky, she noticed breaks in the clouds, the sun shining through. "Finally." She muttered to herself, shedding the jacket she had taken from Anthony, tossing it aside and unzipping her hoodie, she sat down a few feet away from Jimmy as a ray of sunlight reached the two of them, the warmth that came with it a welcome comfort after the days after days of neverending rain that assaulted the island. With the rain gone, she would've preferred an opportunity to put on a new change of clothes, but unfortunately she had never gotten the opportunity to properly dry her last change of clothes. And besides, they were currently wrapped around her secret weapon, offering them a bit of protection from anything that might hit her pack, and keeping them from rattling enough to draw attention to them.

Opening up her pack halfway, she pulled out a tin of crackers (she stopped collecting the bread from the packs she scavenged, thinking it would just get wet and ruined,) pulling out about five or six crackers and eating them slowly, staring blankly out into the water...and the bodies half submerged in it. After a few minutes, she chased the crackers down with a swig of water from one of her water bottles before putting them all back, zipping the pack back up. Waiting a few more moments, she once again spoke up.

"Wade was the one that killed them. Mary was the one that killed Guy, but it was Wade that finished the job. That did..." She hesitated as she remembered what she had seen. "...THAT. So nothing's changed."

((Edward Sullivan continued from Falling Down.))

Somewhere through the jungle ahead, Eddie picked out the sound of Jimmy calling for his allies. He heaved a sigh of relief. For a minute, he thought he'd gotten lost. As an added bonus, the rain had stopped. Of course, he'd lost his change of clothes when he lost his duffle bag, meaning he'd have to stay soaked until he dried out. At least the mud would dry up soon.

Picking up the pace, he felt the hint of a smile cross his features. At least some things were starting to look up. For some reason, though, he couldn't shake the strange sensation of déjà vu. Adrenaline pumped into his back. He suppressed a shudder and absently began to grind his teeth as he felt his skin crawl. Something was very wrong, but he was hard pressed to say what.

Tightening his grip on the Remington, he swallowed hard. Probably just that dream. Keep moving Eddie. It won't be so bad once you're back with Lyn and Jimmy. Just keep moving and keep your ears open. It was a reasonable enough explanation, but something still didn't sit right with the boy. Why did this place look so familiar? And why did it make his stomach tighten so?

His stomach growled as his mind drifted in its general direction. Right. He was hungry. How long had it been since he'd eaten? At least a day or two, probably. He'd lost his pack about that long ago. An even more depressing thought: how long since he had an actually filling meal? His stomach gave another gurgling complaint. "You shut up," he mumbled pointedly, "We can eat once we find Jimmy and Lyn." At least being stranded on some nameless island, traipsing about to avoid being horribly killed, meant that he had to be shedding that extra bit of weight he'd always been too lazy to take care of.

He frowned at the very idea. He knew he wasn't fat, but he could have been much more fit. He'd often wondered... if he'd just taken the time to get a more physical hobby, maybe running or martial arts or something, and lost that little bit extra, would Jodene have noticed him? Maybe it would have helped him with his confidence issues. Maybe he'd have an easier time in working up the guts to talk to her. A voice inside his head scoffed dryly. Don't fool yourself. She probably wouldn't have liked you anyway. Maybe not. But it would have been better than trying, wouldn't it?

He brooded on the matter until he found the others. He'd arrived just in time to hear Lyn explaining Wade's involvement in the bloody scene they'd come across back on the trail. "Yeah," he included, "we're still going to find Wade and make him...." Eddie heard his voice trail off as he realized where he was. The lagoon water sparked in the sunlight, marred only by the bodies drifting lazily across the surface. He recognized one of them as Jodene.

The atmosphere of the place hit him like a blow to his chest. His legs felt weak, nearly buckling under the sudden weight of realization. He didn't feel sick, like he thought he should. His heart warred with itself unsure whether to be overcome with guilt, anger, sadness, or despair. In the end, none of the emotions could gain any real ground. Instead, he felt just felt tired.

In the bright flickering of the sun on the water, he distantly realized he was crying. Not the heaving sobs he'd let out in the graveyard, just after the event. Now, he just felt a steady stream of tears trickle down his cheeks.

((continued from Freiheit Unerreichbar))

The GPS indicated that Harry wasn't far from the coast, or at least he figured it did because what else could a vast expanse of blue mean? Really now. There was also a large chunk of land dividing the ocean from the lagoon, which he'd seen a day or two earlier whilst studying his map.

What interested him particularly was the small group of blips congregating at the shore. He was closing in on them, and from the looks of things the trees would cover his approach until he was relatively close by. Harry's (limited) experience suggested that the group probably wouldn't be very well-armed, but that didn't mean for a second that he'd don a kamikaze headband and swoop in like a glorious golden eagle moron.

Harry got on his stomach and crawled quietly nearer to the group, forsaking a little distance for better cover near some large rocks that jutted out past the treeline. His heart thudded steadily faster, every whisper of his body against the ground sounding like a large bass drum in his ears. Once he was safely behind the rocks he got back on his feet and risked a glance at the three students, not recognizing any of them personally but immediately noticing a rifle in one of the boys' possession.

He ducked back down again, his heartbeat now racing. He was confident they hadn't seen him, so it looked like he had the element of surprise on his side. He'd only seen one gun, and he doubted anyone on the island in their right mind would keep their gun in their pack.

'If I can take the one guy out right away then this'll be quick. Just get up and don't stop shooting until the job's done.'

He checked the GPS one more time to cover his ass. Then, with a complete bypass of his previous hesitation at the showers Harry stood up and fired at the boy with the rifle. He wouldn't wait to see if it hit before firing again.

Jimmy was relieved to see that his two companions were still around. As they came up, examining the lake themselves, Lyn informed Jimmy of the details of the gruesome sight he had seen.

So that was Wade Wilson's fault, eh? Well, how wonderfully convenient. Basically nothing has changed.

"The sooner we find that guy, the better," Jimmy spoke angrily. Taking a water bottle from his pack, he uncapped it and took a couple sips. Setting it down again, he considered refilling it in the Lagoon, but figured that the bodies floating in the water would have contaminated it considerably. "How do you get people like that in high school?" he said, not noticing Eddie's grief over seeing Jodene's body. "For a guy like that to go this loco, he must have really gone off his meds." With an ironic laugh, Jimmy picked up his water bottle and leaned back for a large gulp.

With a sudden jerk, the water bottle flew from Jimmy's hand, causing his arm to sting all the way down. All at once, a series of rapid-fire shots rang out, followed shortly thereafter by the noise of something whizzing past Jimmy's head or slamming into the soft dirt. Gunshots! he thought in a panic. I knew I was asking for trouble, but I didn't really mean it! Fortunately for Jimmy, Harry Tsai had decided to fire an automatic shotgun at a distance, allowing the pellets to spread out a bit before finally passing by. If he had been firing at close range, with the firing speed on that shotgun, the three of them would have been turned into mulch in little time at all.

Still, their luck wouldn't last forever. Jimmy, fearing for his life, took the closest cover he could find, despite its likely dirtiness. Leaving his daypack on the dirt, he ran as fast as he could towards the polluted lagoon. Diving into the cold and mucky water, he found his vision obscured even further, but he could feel a floating body near to him. Raising his head out of the water so he could breathe, he placed the body in front of himself, and shook his head to get the water out of his eyes.

If I just stay here, he'll shoot Lyn and Eddie. Ed's got a gun of his own but Lyn...ah, to heck with it.

"Lyn! Get my bag!" he shouted over the gunfire, "There's a gun!" If she decided to shoot Jimmy with it later, it would be Jimmy's fault, but he wouldn't mind. After all, she was much better at shooting people than he would ever be, so the weapon was hers by right.

Laeil turned to look in Eddie's direction, just in time to catch him stopping mid sentence and staring out at the water, silently crying. It was certainly an odd reaction, seeing as they had come across another collection of bodies just earlier without something like this. Just then, she begin to wonder: why WAS someone as meek as this kid hunting after one of the biggest killers on the island. She looked back out to the water, and the bodies floating therein, and after a moment, curiosity got the better of her and she spoke up again.

"...Eddie, why exactly are you going after Wade-"

She barely had time to get the sentence out when the dirt exploded next to her pack, preempted by the sound of gunfire. Laeil almost instinctively dropped down behind her pack. Not the best of ideas, but it was better than nothing.

Shit! Caught out in the open with almost no cover. We're fucked! And there it was again. The feeling of powerlessness. She hated that feeling, and yet she had felt it so many times on this island. She gritted her teeth in frustration. It looks like I'll have to use my secret weapon. Zipping open her pack partway, she reached in for one of her molotovs. I just have to wait for him to get closer. Hopefully he'll go after Eddie first, since he's the one with the gun. Then I'll attack-

"Lyn! Get my bag!" Laeil could hear Jimmy behind her, somewhere in the water, most likely.

"There's a gun!"

Laeil's eyes lit up at the mention of the word 'gun'. Glancing at Jimmy's bag, lying a few feet away, she immediately dove for it, ripping the zipper open and diving in, her hand touching cold metal. Pulling it out, she discovered an old Western-style revolver.

The greatest handgun ever made. The Colt Single Action Army. Six bullets, more than enough to kill anything that moves.

This was what she was looking for. Power. With a few well placed shots, she could drop this fucker. And not just him. When she's finished, she could have three more kills to her name, and a formidable arsenal in her posession. Anyone looking to start anything with her wouldn't even live long enough to regret it. All she had to do was aim and pull the trigger...

"Anybody who knows you, anybody that could help you, they'd rather just watch you die."

"Hey, who are you? Are you okay?"

"Are you hurt at all? Can you walk?"

Laeil's insidious thoughts of betrayal were quickly silenced. God dammit... Fuck this. She plenty of time to sort this out once this guy was out of the picture. Pointed the gun at Harry, this would've been a prime opportunity for a witty one-liner, but all she could manage was a loud "MOTHERFUCKER!" before sending two shots his way.

Back here again. The bloody starting point. Everything he'd done so far had come from right here. Eddie wondered if this was how abused children felt when they returned home. A familiar place that made you sick to your stomach when you thought about it. A place that stole your strength when the memories hit you like a blow to the gut. His legs finally buckled under the weight of the atmosphere. Before he hit the ground, something went wrong.

The stinging in his face and left shoulder hit him before the sound of the shot, white hot needles jabbing his cheek and arm. Hitting the ground harder than expected, Eddie tucked up, his arms clamping over his head and knees rising to his chest. The rifle lay next to him, ultimately useless without someone with the will to use it.

He pulled himself taut and screwed his eyes shut, hoping everything would be safe when he opened them again. He'd used the same trick when he hid from the monster in his closet, as a child. Come on, Eddie, move! Stay here and you're gonna die, do you want that?! He didn't move, still quivering in the mud. If he opened his eyes, he was going to die. If he moved even an inch, the monster that had once been his classmate would get him. Get up, you fucking waste of space!

His left eye slowly opened as he vaguely heard Jimmy yelling to Lyn about something. His eyes flew open as they settled on Jodene's already decaying body. Something clicked behind his eyes and between his ears. Yeah, that's right. You lay here and you'll just let Wade skate. You want that? Not yet. Eddie couldn't just lie down and die yet. Lyn hefted Jimmy's hand cannon and fired.

Grabbing his rifle, Eddie pressed against the mud, madly dashing for cover as the revolver cracked in response to the shotgun. Diving behind a large rock, he curled up again, his heart ready to burst from his chest. One problem taken care of. Now, Ed, stand up and shoot that motherfucker. He unfurled and kept behind his cover. What if he hit the attacker? What if he killed the attacker? Aren't you planning on killing Wade? the voice reasoned, What's the difference with this guy?

Closing his eyes again, Eddie rose just enough to bring to Remington to bear. He hesitated only a moment before pulling the trigger and feeling the rifle kick into his shoulder. Stumbling from the sudden force, he flopped to the ground behind the rock. Curling up again, he wondered if his blind fire had done anything. He imagined a faceless student lying with a bloody hole in their chest. He felt sick. "Don't let me have killed someone," he mumbled to himself weakly, "Please, don't be dead, please, please, please."

Immediately the kid with the rifle fell, signaling Harry to move in and make quick work of the other two before they grabbed their fallen comrade's weapon. He scrambled up onto the rock and squeezed off a shot at the other boy in the group, who was retreating into the water. The sand kicked up some feet away where his shot had landed, indicating a miss, but he had no time to cry over wasted rounds.

Next target. The girl. She was digging into her rucksack, and Harry wasn't about to wait around to find out what it was. He quickly turned the barrel of the Jackhammer on her, only to do a double take and aim back at the boy hiding behind a corpse in the water as he was yelling something about a gun. Harry figured he was talking about the rifle and turned the gun on the first boy again, only to find that he was retreating behind a rock with the rifle in hand.

Letting out a frustrated growl at the mere fact that he'd hesitated thrice in the confusion, Harry pointed the barrel swiftly back at the girl again, only to find that she'd pulled a handgun out of one of the packs and was pointing it in his direction. He reacted by frantically ducking, which was the best tactic he could think of with less than half-a-second to react, and it seemed to work because neither of the shots that rang out were accompanied by searing pain. He quickly fired a shot in the girl's direction and fell back behind the rock again, his heart leaping as he felt another projectile whiz by his head. The resounding bang behind this one was from a different angle though and lead him to the conclusion that the boy with the rifle was finally fighting back as well.

Crouching behind the rock again Harry took a quick look at the GPS screen. The element of surprise had been squandered; he'd failed to even neutralize any of them and now they were fairly spread out on top of that. He cursed through gritted teeth, his mind racing.

'Six minus two, the revolver's got four shots left.' There was too much at stake to assume that her gun was anything but fully loaded, even though he wasn't aware that revolvers weren't exclusive to six-round cylinders. Personally he was glad he'd kept on top of keeping the Jackhammer and the extra ammo cassette full. He'd need a few seconds to reload after the next six shots, but it wouldn't take nearly as long as it would manually reloading the revolver or the rifle. 'The rifle, I have no idea...and he's got cover. Keep shooting at the girl, she's the closest anyway.'

Harry popped up again and fired another shot at the girl.

Watching the firefight rage on, safely hidden behind his makeshift cover, Jimmy suddenly realized how useless he was being. Even when Eddie fell down for a short while, he found himself unable to move from hiding. Instead, he had stayed frozen where he was swimming, doing his best not to cry out in fright every time somebody fired. This was simply not acceptable.

Getting this far in the game, and I'm still unable to fight anybody. How the heck did I make it to this point with this attitude.

Looking around, Jimmy saw the shape of something that looked like his axe where he had dropped it at the edge of the lagoon. Steeling himself, he gritted his teeth and swam out from his body cover, stroking like a madman. Reaching the shore of the Lagoon almost instantly, he swung out a hand, grabbing onto some grass in the process, and pulled himself out of the water enough to grab his axe. Almost the instant his hand closed around the handle of his weapon, he let go of the shore and dove underwater again, not wanting to risk getting shot while out in the open.

Coming back to the floating body, Jimmy saw that there were a number of other human-shaped objects floating alongside him. Suddenly, an idea struck the half-blind fellow. Hiding behind the body still, he reached out and dragged over another body and went behind it. He could see a cluster of rock-shaped objects at one edge of the forest, and judging by where his friends were firing, that was where the would-be killer was hiding. The trees were reasonably close to the Lagoon, so all Jimmy had to do was move the bodies along as cover, and he'd be close enough to the forest to use it as cover to take his foe from behind.

Shifting the floating corpses, Jimmy realized that he was making a noticeable amount of movement, but it didn't matter. With the large fleshy objects blocking him from harm, it didn't matter how much noise he made. And once he made it into the trees, he'd be able to hide among those as well. Assuming their attacker didn't shift his position, everything would go smoothly and surely. Jimmy hoped that whoever was shooting at them was just as scared as he was, because he would soon have a reason to be.

Laeil cursed inwardly as both her shots missed entirely. Then their attacker pointed the shotgun her way. Fuck! Diving back to her pack, she managed to avoid the majority of the buckshot, though some of it still managed to graze her right ankle, sending a wave of pain up the leg. Forcing herself up and throwing herself behind a nearby rock herself.

Just as quickly as power was gained, it was lost. The greatest handgun ever made though it may be, she still had to aim and shoot to hit anything, with a shotgun all you had to do was just point in that general direction and shoot, and you were bound to hit something. At least Eddie had the resolve to return fire himself. Now he had to deal with gunfire from two different directions.

Seeing the boy pop up to fire again, she instinctively popped up herself to get a shot off first, the sight at the end of the barrel inadvertantly lining up with the metal box around his neck before she pulled the trigger, though whether it would hit would be a different matter. Meanwhile the shotgun went off at the same time as the revolver, and while the majority of it hit the rock she was taking cover behind, some of it digging through her right shoulder and cutting a few gashes along her left cheek, causing her to fall backwards, the revolver falling out of her hands, clutching at her shoulder and growling in pain through gritted teeth.

More gunfire cracked on the other side of Eddie's cover. If the attacker was still shooting, that meant he was still alive! A relieved sigh escaped his lips. Yeah, great he's alive, wonderful. He's also shooting at you! He shook off the thought and peeked around the corner of his rock. Jimmy was making a move to get his own cover and had already managed to get a hold of his axe. Craning his neck to check on his other partner, Eddie watched as Lyn rose quickly, aimed her revolver and fired. Her head snapped to one side, sending her backwards.

Calling out to her, Eddie rose to his feet before he realized what he was doing. A quick flash of black cloth told him that Lyn was moving, indicating that she was still alive. Sending a quick glance at the gunman, Eddie dropped behind his rock again. Standing up like that was a good way to get shot. Yeah, like Lyn. Clenching his fists tightly, he swore sharply. What the hell was he going to do? Inwardly, he sneered at himself. Just gonna sit here and wait for this guy to kill them too? Gonna hide, like when Wade butchered Jodene? His fingernails dug into his palms hard enough to draw blood.

Those two were kind enough to help him find Wade. They hadn't asked for anything in return. He didn't have anything to offer them, but they still went along without any complaints. Maybe it was a stretch, but they were his friends, damn it. He didn't want to have to hurt anyone, but there wasn't any choice left in the matter.

Leveling the rifle on top of the rock, Eddie peered down the sight. He made sure to hold the butt tightly to his shoulder, remembering to sharp kick of the last shot. Lining up the sight, he hesitated only a moment before pulling the trigger.

Something caught Harry in the shoulder as he popped up, eliciting a loud yelp of pain from the wounded boy as he fell sideways, clutching the area with one hand. The spot burned white hot like a crazy motherfucker.

Harry gritted his teeth and hissed through them, tightening his grip on his shoulder. At the very least he hadn't been popped in the head. In a way he was lucky. The small precipice between him and the others would at least give him enough time to recover from the shock and think just a little.

'Oh God it hurts...which one of you bastard fucking cocksuckers was that!!??' All Harry knew was that two nearly simultaneous shots had rang out and one had hit. Did that mean the bitch was down to three? It had been too sudden and confusing to tell where they'd come from this time. 'Doesn't matter...I'm going to kill all three of you American shitholes...'

Crouched safely behind his cover, he turned his head and lifted his bloody hand away for a moment, taking a cursory glance at the wound. It was messy, but from the looks of it the bullet hadn't entered his shoulder so much as deeply grazed it. Still, he really didn't have the time to do anything for it at the moment, so Harry grabbed the GPS and took a look at everyone's position.

He didn't expect anyone to move as drastically as one of the blips had. Somehow the motherfucker had gotten almost directly behind him. Startled, Harry let go of the device and clutched the Jackhammer again with both hands.

Those sneaky bastards.

The trio's risky plan became obvious in an instant; the two stalemate him while one sneaks behind and takes him down...

...but they'd failed to take into account Harry's secret weapon. He would have grinned in triumph but he was in pain and quite scared for his life, so grinning wasn't exactly coming naturally. Not to mention he couldn't be sure this other kid wasn't packing some third gun that had until now remained hidden. Harry would have to chance it. He grabbed the GPS one more time and waited for the blip to get close enough. It made him all the more uneasy that he couldn't hear a damn thing behind him.

...

........

.....now!

Harry dropped the GPS and did a fast 180, landing on his ass with his back against the rock and his hand back on the barrel of the gun. He already had the general angle of the ambush advertised from the device so there was very little guess work in aiming at the approaching student. Harry snarled as he pulled the trigger, hoping that a surprise attack on a surprise attack was twice as startling and unpleasant.

Jimmy had mostly succeeded in his plan. Walking in a crouch, his clothes and hair soaking wet and slightly dripping, he ducked from tree to tree, watching the firefight pan out. Everyone appeared to be getting clipped by bullets by the way the gray shapes were firing and stumbling. This would turn fatal very quickly if he didn't act soon. Gripping the axe hard, the half-blind fellow crept up on the figure firing from behind the rocks, while repeating to himself the necessity of doing the assailant in without hesitation.

If I don't kill this person, they'll die. Both Lyn and Eddie will die if I don't do something right now. Sorry, buddy, but it's them or you.

Slowly, carefully, Jimmy walked up to this man. It would be easy to do it. One strike to take him down, and however many additional strikes to make him stop moving. All he would need to see was the first one, and then he could just flail away at him. He was getting closer and closer now. Placing both hands onto the handle of his axe, he raised it slowly above his head...and then the man suddenly turned and fired. Ever since the firing started, Jimmy had been wondering just what was being fired at the group. Well now, with the pellets penetrating his arms, left leg, and stomach, he knew just what it was.

Shotgun.....crap.

Blown backwards by the sudden blast of the Pancor Jackhammer, Jimmy flew onto his back, his axe falling out of his hand and landing next to his leg just out of his reach. As he tried to move, the half-blind fellow suddenly experienced a sharp and agonizing pain in his gut, causing him to writhe around on the ground before curling up into a shaking ball. Never before had he felt such agony.

How....how did he know....what did I do wrong?

Laeil shuddered as a sudden chill swept over her leaving as quickly as it came, as if Death's invisible hand had passed right over her. After a moment, she was able to get over the pain of getting shot, rolling over onto her stomach as she reached for her pack. Judging from the cry of pain, either her or Eddie's shot (or both of them) must've hit their assailant. However, judging from the movement she could see from behind the rock, he wasn't down for the count. Looks like she really WAS going to have to use her secret weapon.

Pulling a molotov out of her pack and a lighter out of her pocket, she tossed a small rock in Eddie's direction to get his attention, and then, using hand signals as best she could, relayed her plan to him.

She'd wait until the right moment, then light the molotov at chuck it at Harry. Then the two of them would rush in to attack from opposite directions. Even if a sudden fiery explosion didn't distract Harry well enough, there'd still be no way for him to shoot in two opposite directions at once.

However, the opportunity for attack would come a lot sooner then she expected, when Harry suddenly wheeled around to shoot behind him. Not even thinking about who or what he might be shooting at, she quickly lit the molotov and got up from behind cover, throwing it in his direction. "Now!" She dropped the lighter and quickly snatched up the revolver, moving at a diagonal for a brief moment before rushing towards Harry, firing off another shot in his direction.

Eddie winced as the rifle kicked into his shoulder again. That was going leave a nasty bruise. Beads of sweat traced lines down his face as he fought to keep himself from shaking. Blinking to clear the stray droplet that stung his eyes, he focused solely on the place he'd seen the villain rise from. Villain? Are you being serious? This isn't one of your books. Just focus on what needs to be done.

What needs to be done? Could he really kill someone? It should have been an easy question to answer, but Edward Sullivan wasn't as sure of what he might do as he once was. These students weren't really evil, right? Nobody could want to do the things they did. They were just between the proverbial rock and hard place. But so was he, and he had managed to keep from being violent. And now Jodene is dead and you're getting shot at. Nonviolence sure has some ringing endorsements, doesn't it?

But, just because other people were willing to kill, did that make it okay for him to do the same thing? Evil just begat evil, didn't it? And then there was the matter of the vengeance to be wrought on- His thoughts stumbled and collapsed as a small chuck of rock struck the side of his head. Eyes snapping around, the boy nearly squeezed the trigger in his surprise. It took him a moment to realize that Lyn was trying to tell him something. She didn't need to throw the rock so hard...

The thin streak of black held up a bottle with a rag stuffed in it and motioned sharply with her hands. Eddie was at a loss for what she wanted, shrugging at the instructions. The thunderclap of gunfire tore his attention back towards the attacker. A bright flare arced across the gulf between the shooters. "Now!" Lyn cried, leaping from behind her cover. She made a mad dash for the enemy, firing while on the run. Eddie could take a hint.

Rushing around his own cover, he pushed his body for all it was worth, moving to catch his foe between himself and Lyn. Holding his rifle as steady as possible, he squeezed off a round as he ran. He pumped another round into the Remington's chamber as he gave a short mental prayer. If this doesn't work, you're going to die, you know? Eddie decided he didn't want to think about what would happen, if the rush didn't work.
