((Lori Martin continued from Who Wears Short-Sell Shorts?))

"Hi Toby" Lori said breathlessly, sliding in next to him at the table.

She was going to flag him down at Magic club later, but saw him at the cafeteria and decided now was as good a time as ever. She pulled out her phone quickly and scrolled on her notepad app. And scrolled. And scrolled. Finally, there was Toby. She confirmed and then shoved the phone back into her hoodie pocket.

"Do you wanna go with me to prom?" she said quickly, leaning in on him, elbow nearly stuck into a half a sandwich slice.

What did she know about Toby? Not much. She'd already run through her top picks, but he was cute and well-liked. Who the fuck cared about anything else. Her mind was starting to spiral. What was going to be this guy's problem? Already had a date? Dating a dude? Working that night? Washing his hair? Joining seminary tomorrow?

She stared at him with her tight rictus grin.

((Toby Underwood enters Prom)

Toby managed to not look like a deer in headlights when Lori suddenly appeared like a crazy ex. Not that they'd dated before, oh God no. "Hey, Lori. Prom?" Toby wasn't like, that judgmental of a guy, really. Lori was, to be generous, not very attractive. He'd be fine with hanging with her, at least, if she wasn't also just...upset about everything. Seemed she was so volatile she might blow up at any sort of slight.

She seemed pretty on-edge, more than usual at least. Maybe she was desperate, actually she definitely was, but like, oh well? Toby was already not thrilled she'd appeared to interrupt his lunch, but he could forgive that. It was just, he wasn't too thrilled with needing to spend a night with her. He didn't want her to end up dateless--he wasn't spiteful like that--but he didn't want to be her date.

Toby turned in his seat and folded his arms. How to go about this..."Hey, that sounds good, but, you know-" He'd just been talking to someone, had been thinking about it? "Tirzah, she asked me a little while ago, so lemme talk to her, then I'll get back to you in a little bit. If not, I'll see you there!" Toby grinned and packed up his mostly-eaten-anyway lunch and tossed it on the way out.

Lori stared at the spot where Toby was just a moment ago before he quickly collected his things and ran off. She just stared silently, in shock.

"T-Tirzah?" she sputtered to herself.

She knew who the other girl was, though it wasn't as if they were friends or anything. The girl was......pretty she supposed. And wealthy. But she was a weirdo and and an idiot. She was the type of person who never had to work for anything and got everything anyway. Tirzah was an irresponsible person who would wander out of a party stumbling drunk before heading back to her huge house and everyone just thought it was cute.

Lori's eyes started to well up.

What about Lori? She worked hard for everything and still no one wanted her. Why couldn't she have things easily like the Tirzahs of the world? Did it not matter what she did? No matter how hard she tried, everyone was always going look at her as coming from the reject pile. That was because life was unfair. Lori started to loudly cry at the cafeteria table.

If that was going to be how things were, then she would just have to work even harder, do more, be better, have more so that she could be the one passing over people. Lori got up, trying to frantically wipe away her streams of tears with her hoodie, removing swathes of makeup as she did.

Fuck everyone and fuck prom. She would spend the night volunteering at the homeless shelter instead of dancing in the gym to Taylor Swift and then getting drunk off Smirnoff Ice in someone's basement! She would actually be doing something important to benefit society! She would show them, and if anyone asked about her plans she would tell them and then they'd feel like the jerks they were when she would be sacrificing her night to help people.

Lori's blurred vision caused her to walk right into a blurred form. The tray tilted back and got what looked like mashed potatoes all over Arizona Butler.

Lori looked up and saw Arizona. She was another one. She could have called those girls Tirzahs or Arizonas and they would have been the same. Beautiful and had everything and were loved by everyone.

"YOU'RE NOT BETTER THAN ME YOU-"

Whatever the insult was going to be was choked in her throat and she ran away with half her makeup on her sleeves.
