Friday Night by Candlelight

"Order up!"

The hustle and bustle of the so-called "upscale" diner on a Friday night was not unrivaled. In fact, it was probably just as crazy at any restaurant in the tri-county area. The calamity and chaos that echoed out from the restaurant's kitchen reflected just how busy the little restaurant was getting. It was dinner time, after all, and it was what every single person in the United States seemed to have designated as "date night". In fact, the only place that was getting more business than local eateries were businesses like the movie theatres.

Viki Valentine definitely didn't envy those Malco employees right about now.

"What the hell is this shit?!" Jacqueline the expo girl screamed at one of the cooks, "Can you not read the fucking order? What are you, an idiot?! Redo it, now!"

Then again, it was just another Friday night in this place. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a Friday or a Tuesday, Jacqui still would've been screaming at the cooks, and the kitchen still would've been filled with waitstaff scrambling to and fro in an attempt to assemble their orders and transport it to the waiting customers.

CRASH!

Well, somebody's order was going to be late. It was so chaotic in the back between the running waitstaff, the screaming expo girls, the obnoxious cooks, and the overly loud rap music blaring from the speakers that one could hardly think in all the chaos. The best part was, all you had to do was walk out that door and it was an entirely different environment. The front of the house was quiet, calm, collected. Lots of couples were scattered in various corners of the dark restaurant, in solitary booths, conversing quietly amongst themselves.

"I need a runner to table twenty-one!"

A couple families were scattered in the midst with an occassional obnoxious kid tossing the french fries from his plate onto the ground. Of course, whoever got assigned that particular table was probably swearing inwardly right now. Once those things were mashed into the carpet of the restaurant, they were almost impossible to get out. Not to mention, ever since Jaime broke the Bissell, it had been a real bitch to try to get stuff out of the carpet with that old straw broom.

"I said I need a runner! Are you people deaf? Let's get this food out, it's getting cold!"

Viki slinked up from the back of the restaurant where she'd been idly rolling silverware. She was supposed to have been cut already. Actually, she was supposed to have left already, but that scenario was one for fairytales. She couldn't finish all the extra work she had to do before she could leave for the fact that most of the other waitstaff seemed to be doing, well, a whole lot of absolutely nothing on their busiest night of the week. In fact, she'd watched over half the staff sneak out the back one by one to smoke a cigarette. She totally understood somebody needing nicotine on a night like tonight, but really now, couldn't they go one at a time?

She grabbed a tray and the row of plates that were lining up along the expo line, checked the ticket sitting on top of them, and headed out the exit door and into the much quieter lobby. Making an immediate right and heading up a small set of steps, the table she was carrying the order to quickly came into view. Viki couldn't help but grin a little bit as she approached. It's too bad it wasn't her table, it was a group of college-aged guys, all probably just having turned 21 by the fact that most of them had beers resting in front of them. All in all, the table screamed "huge tip" for the moderately attractive. She couldn't help but be a little envious of whoever's section this was supposed to be.

"Hey guys!" she chirped, "Sorry about the wait on your food. Busy night. Who had the T-Bone?"

Everyone had their own job when they were in High school. Once you were sixteen your parents basically forced it on you. The only way to spend money was to make money. That's just plan fact. Serenity halos was no different. Her job was just as infuriating as the next person's. She was always rushing, always in a hurry, and always dead tired at the end of the day. Working at the best and most expensive restaurant in Highland Beach would do that to you.

Serenity liked her job, for what it was worth. She got good tips, and she usually had a nice table. The kitchen was always a panic room, (especially with Jacqueline constantly rushing everyone around), but she would always keep a smile on her face. She never had a bad day at work. Until today that is.

Who in their right mind goes to work during their menstrual cycle? Only an idiot. Serenity certainly qualified at this point. She was having a horrible day. It was a Friday night and she was stuck here, waitressing during her period. Sickening, isn't it? She tried to keep her upbeat demeanor throughout the day, but it was catching up to her. She only had a few more hours to go.... she could make it!

Her next table was table 21. She quickly walked over to the table. The table held four men, all only a few years older than herself. She stopped in front of their table and felt all four pairs of eyes move onto her. She was used to it by now, so it didn't bother her in the slightest that they were checking her out. In fact, that meant she'd get a better tip!

"Hey there fellas! I'm Serenity, and I'll be your waitress this evening! May I take your orders?" She smiled brightly at the boys and the most timid of them blushed a small bit. She found that amusing.

"Yeah babe, your number with a side of a date!" The one sitting closest to her said. She felt her eye twitch but didn't let it faze her.

"Very funny. What'll you guys have?" She asked again.

The four gave their orders, and she had to check their identification when they asked for beer. She'd lose her job if they were underage. She quickly walked back into the kitchen and hung the order. She grabbed a few mugs and quickly filled them with beer. She returned to the table and handed them out, not before flashing another smile and seeing the timid boy blush again though. She returned to the kitchen and went to grab the orders. She felt a sudden urge of pain in her vaginal areas however, and had to retreat into the bathroom to take care of a little problem.

By the time she got back, her order had been taken out by someone else. She walked out to the table to see the other waitress handing out plates. She recognized her immediately. Viki Valentine was a lifesaver. She walked over when Viki was finished and winked at her. She asked if the boys were alright and then followed Viki to the kitchen.

"Viki! Thanks so much for that save back there! I can;t thank you enough!"

((I thought the Aphronator was going to join us, but I don't wanna wait. :)))

So, Serenity Halos was the culprit. It had been her order that had been sitting on the expo line and had ultimately prompted Jacqueline's screaming fit about the waitstaff not paying attention to the orders, or something like that. Viki shrugged nonchalantly and smiled at Serenity. It wasn't like it took much effort for her to walk up front momentarily and carry a few plates out to a table. Besides, Serenity hadn't acted quite "right", so to speak, since she got to work that afternoon. Viki could only imagine that she wasn't feeling well, or something. She'd expect someone else in the restaurant to have her back too, if she was sick.

"It was no problem, really."

It wasn't a problem. It was a routine. It was just the way things were done around here. It didn't matter if it was the slowest hour of the slowest day of the slowest week of the slowest month of the year in this place, when things hit the expo line, they were supposed to go out of the kitchen. Thus, Jacqueline the Nazi had proclaimed, and thus, it was so. After all, this place was high-scale, or at least that's what they called themselves. People didn't come in here expecting poor service. It was the same speech that every member of the staff here had had drilled into their heads from the time they were hired.

Viki'd worked here for quite a while. In fact, she'd been employed with the restaurant since she turned sixteen, and she'd done a little bit of everything in the time she was here. She started off as a hostess, which wasn't a bad job, but the pay wasn't quite up to par. From there, she moved to serving, where the increased money due to tips was quite the nice adjustment. After a while, Viki got tired of being a server and made an attempt at the expo line, but it was very shortlived. She'd never be as aggressive or tempermental as someone like Jacqueline, and that seemed to be what it took to keep the restaurant in order. Eventually, she went back to the front of the house as a server.

Basically, Viki was about as familiar with the restaurant as you could get. It was her home away from home, and its employees were like her family. Sure, they had disagreements and spats sometimes, can you say any different? Still, overall, she was quite satisfied with her part-time job. She'd held it for a lot longer than most people she knew. In fact, her parents were amazed at how long she'd held a steady job. Most high school kids don't last more than three months in the same place. Viki had long since broken that record.

"All the servers bailed at once," she laughed, "The next thing I knew, Jacqueline's head was spinning on the expo line and she was screaming for someone to take their food out this instant. Judging by your table though, it could be the wrong order and show up cold and moldy, and they'd still leave you a huge tip."

Sad, but probably true. You didn't have to do much to be a server, it was an easy job. Basically, all you had to do was show up, look cute, and act really, really ditzy. It never failed. When you had a group of young guys, like Serenity happened to chance upon that evening, they couldn't possibly care any less if you wagged their food out while it was still mooing, as long as you gave them a smile and a wink and wrote a fake number on the receipt or something. If it was a couple, the girl probably wouldn't like you, but it never failed, her boyfriend would leave a really big tip on the table after she went to the car if you flirted with him while she was in the restroom. And then there were the older couples. The stupider you acted, the "cuter" you were, and the bigger tip people left.

All these things were tricks of the trade that had been learned and passed down by servers to trainees for as long as Viki could remember. It seemed ridiculous, but it also seemed to work, and why question what works? Viki let out a bit of a yawn and leaned nonchalantly against the workstation near the bar. She contemplated whether or not to remain on the floor for a bit or head back to the back and finish her sidework so she could head home for the night. She had a mountain of homework to do, as always, but she just wasn't in a hurry to get to it.

"Need some help?" she inevitably offered to the bartender, who seemed to be trying to balance drink orders with those ever annoying to-go orders.

It was going to be a long night.
