((Sarah Xu continued from 11th Meter))

It was midday Monday and Sarah felt good, walking down the almost-crowded main street with a roll of sticky tape in her hand and a bunch of posters in her bag. With lunchtime and a free period she had at least an hour to spare, so taking the opportunity put up some posters seemed like a brilliant idea. She'd already put up 8, leaving... 25 minus 8... 17, yep, 17, and when she was done everyone in the damn town was going to know about the upcoming climate rally. Everyone who walked down this particular street anyway, and bothered to look at posters, and weren't rednecks, and actually cared about the fact that widescale destruction was kind of imminent and, uh, yeah...

lots!

She walked up to the next telegraph pole and took a quick but unnecessary glance around for police. Satisfied, she performed a practiced but awkward posterising action. Holding the poster up with her cheek pressed against the pole, she blindly wrapped the sticky tape all the way around the top in a sort of adhesive hug, her fingertips barely touching on the other side, before cutting the tape with her teeth. Then she repeated the action to stick the bottom down. She took a step back, admired her work, and tried to walk off looking like that had been totally dignified and not unco at all.

She stuck the tape in her pocket and fingered the posters, counting them, just to, you know, make sure none had evaporated or something.

She probably should have been looking where she was going instead.

(Reiko Ishida introduction)

I never understand why people would willingly walk...

Reiko was, as usual, weaving her way through the crowded street on her roller blades, much to the dismay of others. Not that she would ever hit someone, she was too good for that, but for some reason, people didn't like it when someone who was smart enough to go faster like say, use a pair of roller blades, people felt like they had to be slighted or cheated in some fashion.

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed yet another poster had been put up, something about climate or something or other, she could really care less. The world was going to hell, and there was nothing she could do about it, so why should she care? One small group of activists or whatever they wanted to call themselves wouldn't be able to reverse the damage that millions cause daily.

Of course, by looking at this poster, her attention was not where it should have been. Namely, in front of her...

Sarah's tabbing was abruptly interrupted when Reiko's forehead connected with her face, the rollerblader's momentum throwing her to the ground. She blacked out completely for the moment between her head smacking the concrete and Reiko's full weight landing on her.

Dazed, winded, and with most of her body aching from trying to prevent her fall, Sarah opened her eyes and tried to work out what had just happened. Someone was lying on top of her and the fuzziness of her vision wasn't helping her work out who it was. Rubbing her eyes only served to clear some of the excess tears and make her painfully aware of the grazes on her arms.

She made a feeble attempt to grope around for her glasses. Then the migraine started.

As Reiko turned her head, she felt like she hit a brick wall. Well, to be honest whatever it actually was was much softer than a brick wall, as Reiko knew from personal experience the hardness of said brick walls. The point was, it hurt. Alot. Even with the added height from the roller blades, Reiko's forehead would hit the other person square in the chin, and due to her forward momentum, unless said person was built like a brick wall, which at the height they would have to be at for someone as tiny as Reiko to hit in the chin, was highly unlikely, they would be falling hard. Normally, Reiko would be able to keep her balance in a situation like this, but the collision greatly effected her equilibrium, and for the first time in at least 3 years, if not longer, Reiko found herself falling.

The tiny girl had about a moment to think Well fuck before landing on top of the unfortunate victim of this entire incident. Luckily for her, Reiko weighed all of about 90 pounds, so the damage could have been worse. She quickly rolled off the unfortunate girl, trying to minimize the damage she had already caused. Tenderly feeling her forehead, she had to close her eyes, due to the fact that everything around her seemed like it was under water. Vaguely aware that she was lying in the middle of a sidewalk, Reiko forced herself into a seated position, opening her eyes. It was through some miracle that her glasses managed to stay on her face, even if they were dangerously close to falling off the end of her nose. Pushing them back into place with a shaky hand, she placed her right hand on the ground beside her, and came into contact with something. Grabbing them, she realized they were a pair of glasses, and seeing as hers were on her face, she could only assume they belonged to the other person.

"Are... are you... ok?" she managed to get out, noticing the slightly metallic taste in her mouth usually associated with blood. Feeling her mouth with her left hand, sure enough, her lip had been busted wide open, probably from her own teeth on the way down.

Sarah didn't notice Reiko rolling off of her, she was busy experiencing one of the worst headaches she'd ever head. had. something. Fuck. She struggled to push herself into a seated position where she might have a better chance of finding her glasses, which between the tears and the hyperopia was still unlikely.

Her head throbbed again, and she could smell copper chloride or something. Or blood. It was probably blood. Her nose must be bleeding. Eww, now she could taste it, it must be bleeding a lot. Another wave of pain sloshed through her head. She probably had concussion. She didn't want concussion, not with finals coming up. Then if she failed she'd have to spend another year in school. And, and she was sitting in the middle of the street bleeding everywhere, and she couldn't find her glasses, and everyone was probably looking at her, and her head really fucking hurt and she probably had concussion and she'd fail finals and someone had probably stepped on her glasses and now she was crying and she didn't want to cry in front of everyone sitting on the pavement but thinking about it made her cry more and and...

Sarah had pulled her knees up and hid her face in her arms against them while she sobbed. Blocking out the world didn't really work when you were sitting in the middle of a thoroughfare but she was going to give it a go anyway.

I don't see how this could possibly get worse... Reiko thought to herself as Sarah started to have her breakdown. Being the hard headed individual she was, Reiko didn't realize just how bad the collision had been on her, until she tried to stand up. Combining the vertigo she felt with the fact she had wheels on her feet did not make for a pretty scene. Reiko ended up falling backwards, landing rather hard on her backside, sending another shock of pain along her body.

At this point, a small crowd had begun to gather around the two young girls. A couple of them had their cell phones out, and Reiko could only assume what they were doing. Afterall, between the two, there was probably quite a bit of blood to go around. There would probably be at least 5 or 10 minutes before anyone even showed up, and hopefully Reiko could use that time to snap the other girl out of... whatever sort of state she was in right now.

She had to practically pry Sarah's hand out so she was able to place the glasses she found on the groud beside her. "I...I think these are yours."

Sitting around crying was pathetic, she was pathetic, what right did she have to cry anyway? She lived in the first world class warfare buffer thing where everyone was comfortable and stupid and she hated it, and she hated them but they didn't deserve it and they were standing there watching her cry and she was crying and and... and someone was putting something in her hand? It felt like her glasses. That was really awesome because she'd thought they were broken or cracked or lost or dead or...

She swallowed and looked up blindly despite still looking like a weeping blood soaked mess. "Ththnk Yu"

Ok hui, getting back together now. Sarah tried to take a deep breath but it ended up as more of a stuttered choke. She rubbed her eyes three or four times, wiped the back of her hand across her mouth and nose to clear some of the blood, and put her glasses back on. With her vision somewhat improved she looked up again at whoever had helped her. They were hurt too, and as well as recognition, suddenly she felt incredible guilt.

"Reka! Ah, Ah yu 'kay?"

How could she be so selfish? Sitting there wallowing in self pity like some sort of oww five year old and owwww...

Between the pain and her self loathing she'd started crying and had to wipe her eyes again.

Despite the situation, Reiko couldn't help but feel her usual annoyance at being confused for her sister. Pretty much all her life she had been trying to differentiate her from her sister. Wearing different clothes, pursuing different interests, taking different classes, and even then, it would still happen. Which is not to say she resented her sister in the slightest, far from it. It was just sometimes, Reiko wished she wasn't a twin.

"Wrong one." Reiko said. The initial shock of the impact was wearing off, and it wasn't such a struggle to talk anymore. "I'm Reiko."

Somewhere in her mind, it registered that her roller blades may pose a problem in the near future, and slowly but surely began to loosen the bindings, sliding her feet out, as in the distance she thought she heard sirens, probably no doubt from one of the stander bys.

Sarah started to blush, she'd talked to Reiko in class for quite a while, so she felt quite embarrassed that she'd gotten her name wrong. Typical. Though considering the situation it was forgivable, not remembering the name right. wait, she could have sworn... maybe the collision had messed with her memory. What if it was permanent? How could she tell!? Sarah felt a moment of panick before she realised that was a stupid idea, and she'd always been bad with names. That, and thinking existentially didn't help the headache at all. Owwwwww

"Ehk, mm srry."

At least Reiko seemed to be doing ok.

Sarah could feel her nose still running blood, so she pushed the back of her palm against it to stem the flow a little. She looked around to get her bearings again, and that's when she really took note of the people watching. One of them had gathered her papers up and put them back into her bag, which was nice, but many of the rest had mobile phones out. That meant one of two things, one, they were all ringing ambulances, and that was something she didn't OWW need. That, or they were taking pictures, which was even worse. She started to go a deep scarlet.

Sarah wanted to leave. Now.

She said "Thnku" to the person who'd collected her posters for her, told Reiko "I thnk we shuld g-go" and attempted to get up. She managed to get halfway onto one leg before losing her balance and falling sideways, stopping herself with her hand. The scraping made her hand sting more, and gave a mild jolt up her arm, but at least she hadn't done her head any more damage. She started trying for a second go.

Reiko managed to pull off her roller blades, revealing a pair of rainbow striped socks. Taking great care to tie the two roller blades together by the laces, she would make sure they went with her when the ambulance arrived. Which would hopefully be soon. Her head was starting to hurt slightly, a sensation not unfamiliar to her. She probably had a concussion, not to mention her lip was going to look pretty nasty for a couple weeks.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sarah struggling to stand, which was definitely not her best course of action at this time. She could quite possibly hurt herself even more than she already was. She appeared to be a stubborn one however, and was starting to make a second attempt.

"Sit still and wait for the ambulance to come. You're in no shape to move around." Reiko attempted to say in a nice manner, but unlike her sister, she wasn't very good at that. So it came out more as a command than it did a friendly request.

Sarah's second attempt didn't get her any further than the first. The sheer failure convinced her to follow Reiko's suggestion and just stop. Stop and sit there and bleed and cry in front of everyone. Fine. She could do that.

She pulled her knees up again and tried to hide her face, contain some of the blood flow, and ignore the headache. There was already blood all over her shirt and arms, some on her jacket, that was going to be a bitch to clean, and her face of course. And she felt nauseous and she couldn't think straight and she was tearing up again.

She pulled her satchel in towards her, partly to keep it safe, partly just to do something she felt capable of.

As Sarah began to close herself off from the world again, the ambulance finally pulled up to their location. The two person paramedic team exited the vehicle, each one attending to a different girl. The one who looked after Reiko was fairly young, no more than 32 or 33, dark skinned and fairly muscular. When he spoke he had a deep, yet comforting voice.

"What happened here?" he asked Reiko. No doubt the other paramedic was asking Sarah the same thing, but good luck getting much out of her at this point.

"We ran into eachother. Really hard. She got the worse of it though." Reiko managed to say.

"Can you stand?"

Reiko shook her head, which she realized in retrospect was not a good idea. With the Paramedic's help, Reiko managed to get up, leaning heavily on the arm that was given for support. Slowly but surely, they made it to the back of the ambulance, where she was helped into the back. The paramedic then left, presumably to help with Sarah. When he did come back, she noticed that he had brought her roller blades to her. Reiko smiled at him, then waited for the inevitable ride.

Sarah's self pity was once again interrupted, this time by the sound of van doors and a hand on her shoulder asking "Are you ok?" She looked up to see some white paramedic crouching beside her. The state of her face must've been enough to answer his question because he moved straight onto the next one.

"Can you hear me?" Of course Owww she could. She responded with a wince and a nod. Her headache wasn't getting any better.

"Can you tell me your name?"

It took her a moment to think about that one. "Srah"

Another paramedic came up to them and asked about getting the stretcher, Sarah wanted to say "No, thank you very much" but all that came out was a "Nnngh". What the hell, at least it'd be comfortable, she could use a nap.

"Yep, grab it. Now Sara, we're going to take you to the hospital, is that ok sweety? Can you tell me your surname?" Sweety?

"Ng... Shoo."

"Do you mind if i carry your bag?"

"Shr"

The other paramedic came back a few moments later with the stretcher, which they laid down and helped her onto. A few seconds afterwards she was in the back of the ambulance with Reiko and the first paramedic.

The back of the ambulance was blessedly dark. Sarah was on a stretcher, while Reiko was strapped into one of the benches, while the paramedic was on the other side, attending to Sarah. Reiko spent much of the trip holding a wad of tissue to her lip, which had more or less stopped bleeding, but there was still some trickles. Suddenly, it occured to her that she should probably tell someone that she was on her way to the hospital. Pulling out her cell phone, she flipped it open and started texting her sister.

Had an accident. Going to hospital. Don't tell mom.

Of course, this would just make Reika worried enough for the both of them, but at least she would know where to find her.

When they started moving, sarah felt a lot like sleeping, something that the paramedic deliberately seemed to be making difficult for her. He'd mostly cleaned up her face and given her a bunch of tissues to help with the nosebleed. "Now can you pinch the bridge of your nose sweety? Right here, no up a bit, perfect."

"Now that should help stop the bleeding, do you mind if I get your parent's number? Do you have a mobile?"
"Ess. N beg"
The medic started rummaging around in her satchel for her phone.
"Oh, Biology eh? going to become a doctor?" She just smiled, then gave him a sidewise glance when he added "It's funny, I didn't take you for a senior" Wait, did he just take a shot at her height? She added a glare to the glance.
"Hehe, sorry. How're you feeling?"
"Trred"
"Okay, I don't want you to fall asleep on us okay? I'm pretty sure you've got concussion and we wouldn't want you going into a coma."
"Nghkay" Jeez, he sure knew how to reassure someone, at least she understood why he kept talking now though.
"Now should we ring mum or dad?" She just shrugged as he wrote the numbers from the phone down. Mum was probably busy teaching unless her school was still having lunch, and dad was almost definitely occupied. Either way she was being burdensome. Great.

((Sarah Xu continued elsewhere. probably the hospital unless the ambulance crashes.))
