After getting to know Lucy at school, Daniel had asked her one day to accompany him to the mall. He was dressed that day in a black tank top and a red leather jacket with jeans. Again he looked like a tough guy but he couldn't help it. Daniel just gravitated towards that particular style. He was looking around the store windows and noticed a few had prom dresses on display.
How do I ask her?
He glanced over at Lucy, wondering if she was looking at them too. Gazing down at her hands, he wondered if she'd be surprised if he held one.
After you ask her, shithead!
Daniel breathed a sigh, looking surprisingly nervous.

I wonder if I'm pretty enough to wear one of these...
Lucy was stood next to Daniel, looking into the shop window at the many prom dresses on sail, her hand at her mouth as she habitually pressed the skin of her lip with her fingers. It was a habit she had taken up to avoid biting her nails.
Daniel, the one who had invited her there, was stood next to her, his reflection in the window letting her see the first guy to invite her anywhere. His outfit made him look pretty tough and intimidating, but Lucy was able to overcome his nerve-inducing presentation by remembering the time they had in the music room: no matter how big or dangerous he looked, she'd remember him as the gentle person who had helped her out, and that was all she needed to know.
However, Lucy was too preoccupied to notice Daniel's own nervous behaviour, instead only focusing on her own worries.
I mean, the Prom's coming up, and I guess I would like to go. But still...
She had never seen herself as that good looking: oversized forehead; off putting glasses; ugly nose; squinty eyes; yellow teeth; not to mention her tiny breasts. Of course, these were merely the insecurities that accompany high school life, as in reality Lucy had little to complain about physically, even if she didn't realise it.
"The Prom's coming up soon, isn't it?"
He probably already had a date, since girls always seemed to be into those big, tough guys. Someone as big and tough as him would probably have had girls asking him out months in advanced. No-one had asked her, not that she was surprised though: who would ask out a girl with her remarkably uninteresting physique and her meek personality.
She still wanted to go to Prom though.
"I think I'd have fun if I went..."
But then how could she when she didn't have a date? Those things were for the attractive girls who could draw the eye, not the high school geek like her.

Daniel raised an eyebrow and looked down at Lucy. "You...don't already have plans to go?"
His original idea for that night was to spend the night at home with his family. Maybe play some board games or practice on the piano. His parents were always proactive on him gaining new skills. If they had told him to go, he would have went as a single guy offering any girl a dance who didn't have a date.
Something to make them feel special.

Lucy looked up at him with interest, before her face practically lit on fire as she grabbed her hand.
"We're going to make you queen for a day. I think it'd do you good to try some on, yes?"
What..? What?! He's holding my hand! Holding! Oh my god he's holding my hand and he's pulling me inside and I can't let him hold my hand he's too good and I'm not good enough and he's too good and OH MY GOD HE JUST WINKED AT ME!! What do I do!? WHAT DO I DO!??!!
Her inner voice was screaming in panic as she felt his warm grip around her soft fingers, whilst her cheeks grew brighter by the second. She had only known him for a few days, but he was already on the hand holding phase! Should she be this nervous?! Hand holding was good right!? But she'd only known him for a short time! Should they be on this part already!?
Lucy was not experienced with contact with another person, and already Daniel was holding her hands despite her inner protests. It wasn't so much that she was uncomfortable with him, she was just moving a lot faster than she expected.
"Any particular style you like?"
Hardly the main concern for her at that point, but if she didn't say anything then she'd look like a total spas who can't even hold someone's hand without fainting.
"I like green dresses! Yeah! Green ones! They're the best! Gorgeous green! Green for me! Green!"

Daniel wondered if this was an honest answer. At first, he was confused as to why she looked like she was panicking over something. His eyes glanced at his hand holding hers. Was she not used to this? This was normal, wasn't it?
Idiot! Remember, she's not used to this with other guys! Sure you might be with girls, but be gentle!
A crimson streak ran across Daniel's face as he loosened his grip on her hand. "I-I'm sorry. I guess I got overexcited." He glanced around the dress racks and the ones up on the wall. Now he felt deeply embarassed about holding her hand. Perhaps the wink overdid it too. Daniel's gaze turned to the floor.
"...I didn't hurt you did I?" He asked quietly, thanking god this was one of the store's slower days.

Daniel glanced to Lucy and then to the dresses. His mother had once told him that his father had won her affections with surprises. He wondered if the same could be said for Lucy. However, how could he ask her? On the knee? Casual question? The only other reason he let her practice with him was because he had wanted to do a duet with her.

Lucy watched Daniel anxiously as he spoke puzzling statements when not muttering incomprehensibly. What did he have to be uncomfortable about? It was Lucy that should've been nervous!
Lucy tensed up slightly as Daniel continued trying to organise his thoughts, apparently with the intention of asking something. What was he going to ask? To be his girlfriend? It was like he'd said, they'd only had one outing. Weren't you supposed to take it slower than this?
Oh please Lucy, you've always believed that being blunt is the best policy, even if you do suck at it.
Her anxiety grew as Daniel asked her the question.

Daniel stood there still nervous, but was forcing himself to relax for Lucy's sake. "It's all right." He repeated with a firm nod. "You don't have to. I realize I'm coming on maybe a bit too fast. I've actually been meaning to ask you for quite some time." He shook his head a little, trying to sort out thoughts.
"I just want to see you happy. Why miss out on something that happens once or twice in your life?" Daniel looked away and over to the dress racks. "Besides...I'd rather not go with a girl who will spend half the night fixing her hair and being fussy over everything. I'd...prefer to go with you."

Lucy reluctantly nodded her head. Daniel was right, after all: he was doing it wrong. It wasn't necessarily his fault, but the way he was doing it just made Lucy so uncomfortable, and for that reason Lucy felt like a huge freaky nerd.

Lucy looked at the floor throughout her monologue, unable to muster the strength to say the words aloud. She didn't want Daniel to think she was some stupid freak, even if she saw herself as one. She just wanted to be normal.

As usual, she had done something stupid, and she had blown another opportunity, and all she was doing about it was staring at the floor. Lucy Ashmore, no matter what she did, could never have the perfect outing.
