Jason flipped up his phone to check the time and let out an almost inaudiable sigh. 11:03. He was supposed to be meeting Brook at 11:00 and this meant that he was late for the meeting. How do you even get on to a nature preserve anyway? He had spent the last ten minutes circling the streets to find the entry to this place and had finally given up and parked nearby at a CostCo.

Turning off the engine to his car Jason lent over to pull his backpack on and locked the car carefully. The silver 1999 Lancer had served him well so far and he didn't like the thought of it getting broken in to or stolen. Indeed, he had spent almost all the money his grandmother had sent to him on the car so he wouldn't be able to afford a new one if he did get it stolen. Entering a slow jog Jason reflected on the meeting purpose. Brook had asked if he wanted to come look for some flowers up on the reserve. Of course Jason had teased him at this point since, as everyone knew, flowers were for sissies right? There was no vitriol in his mockery since both boys new that Brook enjoyed gardening and it was his job as well, and within seconds Jason had agreed to come along. Flowers were not Jason's thing, but getting in to the outdoors was, and god knows that although Brook was proficient enough in the outdoors he really need a push to get, say for example, the flowers growing on the ledge a few metres higher than most would climb.

It would be good to get away from school and town for awhile, and a hike was always good. Hopefully they would get to climb up some cliffs and do a bit of exploring. Additionally it would give him some time to think. Jason had yet to summon the courage to ask Erin to the prom, even after Nathan's solid advice. Jumping the small gate in to the park proper Jason hiked his way towards the meeting spot. Prom, would, as he suspected, end with him going stag and without getting the balls to make a move. Still didn't matter now.

Reaching the split tree that Brook asked him to meet at Jason stopped and lent up against a nearby rock. His pack didn't weigh him down much, containing his water pack, small first aid kid, sunscreen and some snack bars and he hoped Brook had packed light as well. Adjusting his sunglasses Jason stretched a little, school was good, friends were good and love life was... non existent. That triangle of life was never perfect. Ah well, you can't keep thinking on the past, buck up and enjoy the moment.

A snap of a twig over to the south brought the Australian back to reality. "Brook, that you mate?" Jason called out, pushing off the rock and turning to face the noise.

Brook flailed his arms to keep from stumbling. His school backpack, his tool of choice for storing supplies to take on hikes such as this one, set off his center of gravity enough to make his balance worse than usual. It only stood to reason, then, that when the boy's foot kicked right into a protruding tree root, he stumbled forward at a dangerous angle and prepared to make face-to-dirt contact. Mother Nature decided to have tea with Lady Luck, though, and Brook barely managed to regain his footing, his final step snapping a dry twig clean in two.

"G'day mate!" Brook called in imitation of his friend and today's hiking buddy, Jason. "Hope I haven't kept you waiting, I saw your car parked over by the Costco." While he was saying this, he took careful steps closer to where Jason was leaning so the conversation didn't have to be so loud. "And uh... yeah, the big bossman's car is being a real clunker today, so I figured it would be best to stop there anyway. I looked around to see if maybe yeh'd stopped there, decided you hadn't, and walked to where we were meeting!" Brook said, smiling as he took a look around. "Trail entrance is just a little ways over here... let's get going!"

It wasn't very often that Brook had the time to go on a hike such as this one, and when he asked Jason, he hadn't expected the guy to actually say yes. Everybody was busy with things to do, prom was coming up, they were all getting older with more pressing things on their mind. But Jason knew how to appreciate something as small as this, something that when compared to the social scene held little to no relevance. That's what made the two such good friends, in Brook's opinion.

"Now... what we're looking for is relatively rare, but I've checked this online, and the conditions here are ideal for heather" Brook said, though he remembered Jason was an outdoorsman rather than a flower freak, so a little clarification couldn't hurt. "Okay, so heather is a mountain-dwelling plant, and is generally found from the floral zones four to seven. St. Paul is near the top part of zone four, so it's definitely a rarity up this way!" Brook grew more excited the more he talked. "If I can actually find some, I can leave most of it alone but bring some of it to the nursery, and we can make a killing off of that! Besides that, it's kind of liking finding a sort of rare treasure! Only, you know... it's a flower."

There was another reason to getting this flower that Brook didn't care to express, but it only mattered if he could ever actually manage to work up the courage to ask Tiffany to the prom. At this point, though, it looked like he was in the same, dateless boat as Jason. Oh well... at least he'd have somebody to eat snacks and hang out with, and they wouldn't have to do all those embarrassing dances!

(OoC): MK has godmod rights to Jason until I return.

"Hey" Jason grinned as Brook emerged from the bush. The duo were unlikely friends, when they first met they had both discovered that although they shared similar interests, it was almost always different facets of a topic. Take for instance track: Brook loved cross country, but Jason was more of a sprints kind of guy, in matters of nature, Brook had a natural affinity for flora and fauna while Jason loved the idea of surviving away from civilization and the adventure of exploration. Still these differences meant the two were a perfect combination on any of their activities and could come at most problems from different angles.

As easy going as the two boys were it really didn't take too long for them to hang out together and thus became firm friends, despite Jason's harmless taunting. It was quite possible that Brook's relaxed nature and ability to play along with it made him a great friend to Jason since a lot of people didn't 'get' his humour. Plus, Brook could give as good as he got.

As the two boys set off for their trek Jason made sure to orient himself properly. He did have a natural knack in terms of orientation and was usually pretty good at heading to where he needed to go. Because of this he rarely took maps or a compass with him. This had backfired once or twice in the past but his ego stopped him from being more prepared although he knew it was the right thing to do. He hoped that Brook had packed a map just in case. It wouldn't do to get lost.

"So," Jason began as he hopped on to a rock next to the trail and walked across it before jumping down the other side. "This Heather, is it for Tiffany? You've mentioned she liked it before, and uh, despite your love of the girly things you don't usually go this far out to grab flowers." It really was a good idea, girls loved flowers and Jason had a flash of thought about picking something up for Erin on the way through. Wasn't going to happen though, firstly because any flowers Jason might pick would be dead by the time he talked to Erin and secondly he didn't think it would work anyway.

Leaping over a small trickle of a stream Jason motioned for Brook to jump across. While the American paused at the slippery rocks Jason looked around the area and continued "I mean, just last week you told me you decided to grab those roses from Mr Rickman's yard instead of heading over to your usual digs."

Absently kicking a pebble in to the water Jason raised his hand to his eyes, shielding them from the sun. "Hey, that looks kinda like what you said, we should check that out." Over in the distance a jutting cliff edge hung through the forest. A small patch of flowers seem to be growing at the tip. Mind you, at this distance it was impossible to tell what kind they were, and Jason wouldn't be able to even if they were next to them, but he was more eager at clambering up the rocky surface, his mind already thinking about clambering up and holding the flowers aloft in triumph, yelling out something ridiculous like "Heather? HEATHER? THESE. ARE. DAFFODILS!" and then hurling down the flowers at Brook before leaping back off. A wry grin briefly cross Jason's face at the thought of this, admittedly far reaching 300 reference.

"All she needs is a simple token of earth and water right?"

Brook scratched the back of his head as Jason pressed on the reason that they were looking for such a particular flower. Yeah, sounded like Jason, actually... you give him a slight lead and the guy runs with it. Brook finally realized that it was rather silly to hide his ulterior motive from his friend, regardless of whether or not he'd figure it out. After all, what did it matter if he did?

The rebuttal to the previous statement, just as mental as the first, was that Brook wasn't sure himself if he could really bring himself to ask Tiffany. What if somebody already managed to get to her? Then he'd ask and she'd bring that up, and he'd end up looking very silly. Typical male insecurities, everybody went through this in high school... not that it means that's how a teenager usually thinks; that would be far too rational, even for somebody who was as collected as Brook often was.

"Yeah, alright," Brook said offhandedly as he reached the stream that Jason lept over. It wasn't particularly spectacular in terms of width or depth, but since hiking in wet shoes sucked to no end, Brook decided not to chance it and carefully stepped on each stone, checking to see if they were stable before putting any weight on it. He didn't respond to Jason's follow-up until both of the boy's feet were safely back on Terra Firma, at which point they could continue.

"I suppose, uh, yeah, I generally wouldn't do something like that..." he started defensively, letting Jason lead the way. He was almost certain that Jason knew this mountain far better than he did, anyhow. "But it wasn't like Rickman was actually taking care of his damned garden! Besides, those roses had a very strange hue to them, a bit darker red than usual but not completely dull-" it occurred to Brook that he was rambling on about a subject that probably would've left Jason with an almost-visible question mark floating above his head. "But yeah, they were certainly special, right?"

Trailing off with his rhetorics, Brook looked to where Jason seemed to be spending all of his attention, and spotted a small rocky outcrop. Yeah, it was a bit picturesque, but such a place was exactly what they were looking for. Mountainous terrain, sunny spot, nice crisp weather conditions... if there was a better spot to find a perfect specimen of heather, it would be there. "Ha... a token of earth and water, huh? Damn, Jason, that's pretty poetic of you!" Brook mused with an outright jolly tone. "Who'da thought you'd be capable of such girly stuff, eh?" The words came out with a smirk at his playful rib, Brook's feet keeping in line with where Jason had tread. This outing was about to reap some fruit quicker than he had expected.

Jason paused for a moment. "It's from 300 mate." Brook could honestly be so clueless sometimes, despite the fact that it was a perfect burn. "Still, you know, I am a poet, mainly cause girls love that stuff." To be honest, Jason was a little interested in creative writing, but he found traditional poetry somewhat boring an pretentious. His mouth widening in to a big grin Jason looked at the immediate area.

The outcrop itself could be easily climbable if the duo looped around a little and cut around the small cliff that curved around this area, but that could take at least another fifteen minutes. Jason was impatient even though he was enjoying both the company and the surroundings. That little niggling in the back of his head prompting him to just do something. Spying a overhanging tree his mind sprung in to action. A little climb up the trunk, swing across and grab on to the branch of the closer pine then shimmy his way up and a small jump to the outcropping would mean he would be right next to the small tuft of flowers. Plus this was an opportunity to do something he knew Brook would hesitate on although most would call Brook's hesitation common sense.

"Right," Jason stated "I'll head up there yank a few out and you can tell me if it's the right flower and if it is I'll throw em down to you k?" He could almost hear Brook's sharp intake of breath but him was already away. Charging to the first tree Jason ran up the trunk, only a few feet, but enough to grab one of the lower branches. Digging his feet in to the trunk he hoisted himself up, bits of bark giving way. Sitting up on the branch about 6 feet off the ground he grinned and Brook and waved, snapping off a smaller twig and hurling it playfully at his grounded friend. "How's the weather down there?" he inquired before pulling himself to the next branch, this one reaching out to the nearby pine.

Doing an exaggerated tightrope walk Jason heard Brook yell something from down below. Momentarily his foot slipped and he stumbled slightly to one side but grabbed a hold of some of the other branches. A small twinge of fear gripped the boy. He was now about 12 feet up and although athletic Jason wasn't the most graceful of people. Indeed, he had be called outright clumsy a few times before. Suddenly there was a loud snap and the whole branch gave a little and Jason gulped. "Ok mate, don't look down, this is easy, you've climbed mountains, it's like... two metres up, no probs." He resisted the urge to look down and concentrated on his objective. To get to the pine it would just be a little jump. Breathing in Jason closed his eyes for a second before focusing. Taking a short run up he pushed off the still sturdy branch and launched himself across the two foot gap.

For second Jason's hands grasped nothing but air and he felt a momentary sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach he flailed wildly before his arm grasped the branch he was diving for. The impact hit him hard and he let out an "oofff" as the air released from his lungs. Clutching on with his arms now tightly wrapped around the 6 metre high branch as well as his legs Jason released that he looked absolutely ridiculous and blushed furiously.

There hadn't really been any danger, heck, worse thing that could of happened he would of fallen a few feet and torn his shirt. Propping himself up he looked down at Brooks face. Grinning slightly Jason laughed. "Behold, the amazing feats of strength and dex" - CRACK The tree branch he was sitting on gave way with a loud snap and the boy lost his balance. A loud ripping sound signaled the tearing of his shirt and was accompanied his surprised yell as he frantically attempted to grab on to something, anything - as the the branch plummeted to the ground. Reaching out he felt his hand grab on to the rough bark of the closest branch for a second as it tore away his skin. A sharp sting of pain coursed through his palm and a jarring jolt of pain ran up his arm at the sudden stop but Jason held on. The momentum swung him towards the trunk on the pine and a fresh wave of pain flooded his senses as his arm impacted on the tree's core.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaarh" Jason screamed out as he forcefully resisted the temptation to grab his pained arm with the hand that stopped him from falling. His mind, fighting the blinding flashes of pain ran through his limited medical knowledge. He could still move his hand and the arm didn't feel broken, but it sure hurt like someone had just crushed it under a car. Hanging 18 feet up, holding on to a thick branch with just one hand, his other arm incapacitated, at least for now. Jason looked downwards "Brooooooooook" Jason yelled out, inhaling heavily in an attempt to control the pain. "I think," Jason closed his eyes and breathed out before looking at Brook ashen faced, "I'm going to need a hand here."

Brook looked to Jason and then the ledge, blinking. "Hey, dude, there's probably a side trail that'll head up that way if we keep walking, and then we can reach that ledge to ch-" Brook cut himself off upon the realization that Jason was running ahead. Confused at first, Brook used his eyes to trace a path from Jason to the ledge, wondering how the hell the Aussie planned on reaching it without just going to long way around. The only possible way anybody without a grappling hook and a rope (or being a ninja) could reach that ledge was...

No way.... He isn't. He won't really.... Oh. Oh my god, is he really...!?

Brook shook his head as Jason began to scale up the tree in his insane little endeavor, hissing something to the effect of "You're crazy... abso-fucking-lutely crazy". He knew that sometimes Jason liked to be off the wall and do little stunts like this every now and then, but there had to be a limit. Then again... that was right, Jason did stuff like this ALL the time. He didn't have to be a member of that annoying new parkour club that seemed to spring from out of nowhere to understand his way around a slightly complex obstacle. At least, this was what Brook told himself in order to not worry his head completely off of his shoulders.

"How's the weather down there?"

"Real funny, by the way...I just want you to know that St. Paul asylum called, they want their favorite straightjacket model back!" Brook yelled, swatting the twig away and giving a short, nervous laugh. Jason seemed pretty confident in his abilities, if anything else, to the point where he allowed his friend to relax and loosen up a little bit. The tightrope walk was a bit much, though, and the moment it looked like Jason was having trouble, Brook yelled up from the ground. "HEY! Either stop goofing off or come down here!" He shouted, concerned all over again.

Brook took his eyes off of Jason for a moment to see if he couldn't eyeball another path to the ledge that they needed to reach. He was almost certain that by heading on up the path to the mountain summit, and then branching off to the side along the way, they'd be able to backtrack and reach the outcropping, and thus their goal. Of course, that'd be too simple for Jason, hence why he was playing around right now. Taking another sweep of the ledge side, Brook found that about forty to fifty feet away from the outcropping, the slope was far more gentle and peppered with stones, probably set there from some landslide or... something. Hell, it could be a glacial formation for all Brook cared at the moment.

Just then, Brook heard Jason saying something down to him. As he swung his head up to look, the boy was horrified when he was met with a loud cracking sound, and then the sight of the branch giving way under his friend. Brook clamped a palm over his mouth from the shock of what he just saw, frozen in place. Don't fall... don't fall... Brook thought over and over, repeating this mental mantra as though he could keep Jason from falling by the force of sheer willpower alone. If only willpower was enough.
At least partially answering his prayer, he saw Jason latch onto another branch, but then a scream, and one of the boy's arms was hanging limp. This looked far from good... worse than good, this looked grave. From Brook's point of view, Jason was quite far up from the unforgiving ground, and could very likely break a leg if he feel... or worse.
"I'm... I'm coming, Jason, I'm coming!" Brook yelled, but his mind continually skipped a beat. What was he going to do? He didn't have any rope, he couldn't fly up and grab Jason, he couldn't use a magic ring to take the form of a giant trampoline. What could he do!?

Taking deep breaths rhythmically in order to try and stay calm, Brook realized that Jason was fairly close to the ledge that they wanted to reach. Maybe even close enough for Brook to get to him with his height and long arms... but how to do that without killing himself in the process? Working on this 'plan' as he went along, Brook kicked into full gear and ran to the rocky slope as fast as his legs would carry him. He was so focused on speed, in fact, that he only stopped by throwing his palms out in front of him, smacking them against a couple rocks. The hot blood pumping through him told him to ignore this pain for now, and Brook began to climb.

Hardly huffing upon reaching the top thanks to his own athleticism and his near-fanatical devotion to saving his friend, Brook began shimmying across the narrow ledge, counting the seconds and staring at the path that his feet would have to trace, his back pressed against a wall of rock, in order to keep from falling. "Hang in there, Jason, I got you, I got you..." Brook tried to assure his friend, finally reaching the outcropping. Turning, Brook quickly glanced at the flowers (they were heather, but that hardly excited him at the moment), and saw that the outcropping only looked remote from down where they were standing before. Luckily, it attached itself to an upper portion of the mountain trail via a reasonably traversable strip of land, which Brook would need.

"Okay Jason, wait for me!" Brook yelled as though his friend were liable to go somewhere (besides down), and he ran up the path. Trying to find a branch of some sort. Luckily, even though the tree line was a short walk up, a relatively green branch had been ravaged off of its parent tree by a storm, and was just laying there for him to use. Grabbing it and dragging it back, Brook threw off his backpack and unzipped it. He pulled out a trowel that he was planning on using to dig up the flowers with and jabbed it into the ground as deep as it could plunge, wiggling it to make sure it was nice and firmly in place within the rocky soil. Pulling out some twine next (in order to mark trails in case they got lost; there was rolls and rolls of this stuff at the nursery), Brook lashed his left ankle to the trowel, hoping that would be enough to hold him. Inching out to the edge of the outcrop, Brook set the branch under him and laid on it, gritting his teeth and inching it out little by little until the end of the long branch was within Jason's reach.

"Come on, damn it... man up and use that other hand, come on, Jason!" Brook screamed.

Jason winced as another spike of pain shot up his arm. Brook's reassurances seemed to fluctuate between unbearably loud and the faintest whisper. Swerving his head around Jason looked to see Brook's location. Despite the pain and his vertigo Jason couldn't help but smile for a second.

He had never seen the boy run so fast. In a better position Jason would of asked Brook why he never ran so fast in sprints on the track. For a brief second of absurdity the Australian had a flash of Brook reaching the finish line and winning a gold medal. The digging of a piece of bark into his arm brought him harshly back to reality as he redoubled his grip on the branch.

By now Brook had driven the trowel in to the ground and lashed together several rolls of twine. Reflexively Jason's left eyebrow arched up. Brook. Mild mannered, 'lets take the smooth and long road', 'lets not kick the soccer ball in to the girls sitting on the bench' Brook was now in the act of a desperate rescue attempt, carrying a branch that must of weighed upwards of 25 pounds across a gap with only a trowel and some twine to keep him for falling.

"Come on, damn it... man up and use that other hand, come on, Jason!" Brook screamed as he inched out closer to the edge with the branch.

Jason closed his eyes for a second as Brook's branch waved less than 3 feet away. Gritting his teeth and sucking in a deep breath he willed his arm to move. "Son of a Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch" he yelled out as he swung it out half way before retracting the arm as the muscles spasmed violently. "Fuck, fuck, fuck." The bark dug deeper in to his arm as Brook moved even closer to the edge. The taller boy was almost leaning over the drop by now. "Careful mate, if you can't reach just," Jason paused mid sentence, wincing in pain, "just call for help, don't do anything stupid."

Inwardly Jason's heart was beating like a drum but he was trying to remain calm. A thin trickle of sweat ran down his forehead, giving his worry away. Glancing to his arm; the one clutching the branch he saw a thin stream of blood start to make it's way down his arm. He knew Brook was not exactly fond of blood so he rotated slightly and stared at his friend. "Brook look at me, I'm going to be fine, but I need to ask you a favour." Jason concentrated on drilling his gaze in to Brook's eyes. He knew he had probably gone in to shock from his first aid training, and was guessing Brook may of as well. "I need you to take your shirt off and," A twitch sent another spasm through Jason's limp arm and he grimaced, trying to focus on spitting the words he needed out. "and tie to the the branch. That way we've got some more length and a loop so if I lose my grip it'll catch me."

Pausing Jason grinned again. "You get me outta this and I swear I will hook Tiffany and you up!" He decided not to mention the faint splintering noise that he heard from the branch he hung by, or the minute jerk of the wood as it gave way.

Brook did not need a reminder of just how incredibly stupid his actions were. Jason's life could be in danger (granted, how he got to be in that position was profoundly stupid as well), and it was up to Brook to save him. So, here he was, hanging a good deal of himself precariously off of a ledge with a branch wedged uncomfortably underneath him and outwards, reaching towards his friend. The thought never occurred to him that perhaps Jason was heavy enough to offset the branch, break it, or even tip it up and cause Brook to tumble down to a certain broken neck.

None of that mattered now. Just a little further, another inch or so and he'd have Jason to safety, he was sure of it. Sweat running down his eyes, Brook did his best to focus as he tried to save the guy hanging precariously from the tree branch. It practically felt like the climax of a summer blockbuster movie when Jason reached out for the branch that Brook was holding, his scream of pain causing at least one heart to leap and skip a beat.

"Careful mate, if you can't reach just... just call for help, don't do anything stupid."

"There's... gah..." It was clear that they didn't have a whole lot of time to work with. How much longer could Jason keep hanging from that branch? "There's practically nobody else up here, Jason. Just come on, hold on, hold on..." Brook muttered, trying to inch forward. Almost there... I've got you, almost there! I'm going to get you!

That's when he saw it. A dribbling line of blood running down Jason's arm from his hand. He wasn't sure how Jason was still holding out by this point, but Brook began to imagine the wound that he couldn't see. It was deep, it was gruesome, and it was full of blood. It was full of lots and lots of blood that was flowing deep and gushing all over anything it could. Jason's voice pulled him away from the deadly lull of the blood before it was too late, helping him to focus on the words of his friend. It was only a little bit of blood... just a bit, just a scratch. Nothing to have a fuss over.

"Okay... my shirt? Take my shirt off" Brook repeated, inching back and pulling the branch with him, standing up. His eyes closed and his breathing stayed as rhythmic as possible, doing everything to keep regulated and calm. Pulling his shirt up over his eyes, then up past his head and messing his hair up in the process, Brook went to work tying his shirt to the end of the stick. Remembering what Jason said about putting a loop in it, he made sure to include one. Something nice and easy to hold onto, though if Jason feel, it could still very well pull Brook off the cliff's edge with him. He was aware of this, but didn't care.

Now bare-chested, Brook laid on the edge once again with the stick under him, rough points and blemishes in the bark threatening to cut and scrape him with even the slightest twitch. He was fully aware that looking down was a horrible idea, so his eyes stayed on Jason. Shift closer, once more, shift closer again, nudge the branch closer, sway the shirt into reach. They were little steps towards helping Jason that Brook ran through his head over and over again.

"Grab on this time..." was all he could say, and it came out in a low mutter. "You gotta grab on this time."

Brook has seen the blood. This was not good, not good at all. Still Jason knew Brook was doing much better that he usually did with blood. Last time that happened they were in bio and someone had cut themselves while attempting to dissect a frog. Brook was off quicker than a bucket of prawns in the sun. Still, now was not the time to reminisce. Jason tensed as Brook carefully knotted the shirt in to a loop watching carefully as he pulled the fabric tight around the branch.

As Brook edged closer Jason glanced down again. He was a fair way up. A drop could kill him but wasn't likely. Probably break his leg though from this height. He was more concerned with the smattering of rocks that laid below the cliff's ledge. In reality the ground below was sandy and full of fallen branches from the tree, but from Jason's view nothing had seemed more deadly and dangerous.

"Grab on to it this time" Brook called out. His voice sounded metered as if he was focusing on something distanced from reality or turning the situation in to something abstract. Jason nodded almost imperceptibly and stared at the branch. With the addition of the shirt and the extra few inches Brook had crawled out grabbing it should be no problem.

Breathing deeply Jason prepared for the grab. His head swam for a second and he paused. "Now's not the time for vertigo" he whispered to himself as he shut his eyes tightly before looking back to the branch. "Ok, you can do this mate, you can do this." Swinging slightly backwards the boy pushed off and reached out with his bad arm. The comforting feeling of Brook's (surprisingly sweaty) shirt embraced his limb and gave Jason the confidence to let go with his other arm and grab on to the end of the branch. A downward stress came to a sudden jerky stop as he felt Brook tense to hold Jason's weight. Brook had him. The years of abseiling and rock climbing instantly kicked in to effect and Jason reflexively pushed his legs in to the cliff edge to give him more support. "Too easy right Brook?" Jason grinned. He couldn't see his saviour from his current vantage point but he assumed that Brook was doing just fine as he hadn't fallen quite yet.

It was still a precarious position but Jason was in a much better location than before. The was still no response from Brook yet and Jason tried to crane his neck up. "Right Brook?" he called out, this time a little more cautiously.

The blood was definitely there, both with Jason and under Brook, but it never even crossed his mind. His entire focus was on the shirt that he could just barely see, hanging precariously from the branch. Jason was swinging, this had to be it! Brook took a deep breath to brace himself for impact, squinted his eyes shut, and tensed up.

Everything virtually happened in slow motion, as though somebody had decided to be a prick and flip the bullet-time switch on the wall to 'on', even though there was a label that clearly showed not to hit that very switch in regarding everybody's sanity and well being. The branch lurched up under Brook, stabbing him painlessly and giving him more superficial wounds that may as well have not been there, for all the adrenaline that was now pumping. A horrific scene ran through Brook's mind where Jason's weight was too much, and acted as a lever on the branch to hurl him over the cliff, sending both himself and Jason to their dooms, which elicited a sharp whimper.

Things had steadied out, though, and while, the branch was trembling, it had not oh-so-brutally gotten them both killed. Brook laid where he was, since he could now hardly see Jason, even with his own head almost over the cliff. Yet, his voice was calling to him, sounding unfittingly calm at first.

Too easy, right Brook?

He couldn't possibly respond. The adrenaline was still pumping through him like winter-to-spring sap, though it was now in the sense of hope rather than fear. Right... things were going to be okay, they'd make it. Well, he was probably going to kill Jason after, but one of them was going to make it.

Brook snapped out of it when he heard Jason repeat the question, this time sounding a bit nervous. "R-Right! Uugh..." Brook stammered, not daring to get off the branch just yet. He inched back, then forward, then back again, trying to figure out how this was going to work. "How are you... going to get up here?"

"Ok Brook, I'm uh... I'm uh" Jason looked around realising that he wasn't out of the woods yet. "I'm going to push up with my feet but you're going to have to pull at the same time other wise this may not work." Taking a quick once over of his situation he couldn't help but grin. This is probably the closest he was ever going to get to death - well in the next sixty years or so unless of course he got cancer or something. In the worse case scenario he was going to have an amazing story to tell the other guys at school. Nath wouldn't believe it for one, but Brook would back him up, although come to think of it Brook was going to come off better than he was in the retelling.

Still maybe it was something to tell Erin about. A conversation starter might just be what he needed to get her interested and if he phrased it right he might look a little more awesome to her than his usual timid self. With this in mind Jason turned his mind back to the situation at hand.

Jason planted his feet solidly on the side of the cliff and tensed his muscles. "Ok Brook, on the count of three." Looking up he got ready to push upwards as soon as he felt Brook pull on the branch. Given his weight and Brook's upper body strength this shouldn't be to hard to get Jason back on to solid ground. "One." He yelled upwards. "Two, THREE!" Feeling the tug on the other side of the branch he pushed off springing upwards and outwards reaching out with his good arm to get a better grip.

Surprised at the upwards force Jason had only a second to grab on the ledge as it rose about his eye line. "Nice."

Brook's body ran cold. He wanted to yell at Jason, tell him this was stupid and that he better be kidding, but... really, was there any other choice? If Brook had stopped and thought for a moment, he'd see that it was probably the most sensible idea either one of them had thought of all day (and definitely the most sensible one of Jason's). However, in order for this to work, neither one of them could fail. Gardening had made his back strong, but he wasn't THAT strong; there was no possible way that he could hoist Jason up in this situation by himself, and Jason certainly couldn't either with the one arm he had still usable clutching onto a sweaty shirt.

"Okay... okay, but let me stand up first!" Brook practically begged, pulled his legs under him. First his knees, which scraped along the ground without hardly a car by this point, then the rest of each leg. Holding onto the branch while still straddling it, Brook stood up uncomfortably and gulped. The weight was not as bad as before, but still significant, and that meant the branch was driving up towards his crotch. That... sucked, to say the least, but it couldn't waver his focus enough.

"One... two..." Brook counted along under his breath, digging his teeth into his bottom lip.

THREE!!!

Brook heaved his entire body backwards, pedaling back as fiercely as his feet could possibly manage against the thinly-soiled ledge. It had to be enough to pull Jason up, it absolutely had to be or...

It's hard to describe the amount of force two teenage boys can generate if they are working at the same time. It would be easy to explain in sense of the mass moved and newtons but not to describe the feeling. The upwards motion Jason felt was far beyond anything he had experienced before, it's one thing to fall with gravity and indeed Jason had done that many times before, bungee jumping, abseiling, booting off kickers, but this sudden push against gravity was a new experience for him.

Jason's entire body was propelled half from Brook's pulling on his arms and half from his own legs propelling him up and outwards. From the perspective of any bystanders it must of looked like Jason had just did a half aborted back flip up the cliff face. It was anything but graceful.

THUNK

Jason scrambled for grip as his legs dangled off the edge of the cliff. He needn't have bothered though since his body was planted firmly on the soily ground at the top, his face full of some sort of plant he didn't really recognise. Pushing himself upwards slighty Jason looked around for Brook. Spotting his friend getting up from the ground he tried to catch his breath. "Jesus. Fucking. Christ." Jason panted heavily as he moved in to a sitting position, a little further away from the cliff. Fumbling with his shirt for a second Jason pulled off his sunglasses which were hanging precariously from the collar. Glancing at Brook and then back at the tree he had just come of he grinned.

"I guess that's what they call..." he paused as he unfolded his sunglasses and placed them on his head. "living on the edge." The words had barely come from his mouth before he started laughing. All that anxious energy had suddenly been released and he couldn't stop. Flopping back to the ground he stretched his good arm out while his injured one shook in time to his uncontrollable laughter. Now this would be a great story to tell his kids, if he ever had some. The laughter started to die down as he glanced over to Brook again. One look at his face and Jason started up again rolling over in a fit of laughter.

With the sudden force the two of them had put behind their efforts, Jason was hoisted to safety. The force was a bit too sudden, however, causing Brook to reel back from the momentum of his pulling. He landed right on his ass, and rather hard. Collapsing on the ground on his back, Brook groaned in a mixture of pain and relief, though he couldn't decide which one outweighed the other with a myriad of pebbels and dirt grinding into his back, providing little to no comfort.

It was this least comfortable landing pad ever that prodded Brook to sit up, still panting. Jason was safe... who knew how badly he was hurt, but the fall to the ground could have potentially killed him. Anything was better than that; Brook didn't need any nightmares about his best friend's death plaguing him alongside other dreams of being fired or a frost killing all of the gardens he's ever worked on. Or that other, OTHER nightmare featuring the pillsbury doughboy...

Brook lowered his scraped, slightly bloody hands and strained to push himself up so he could stand, his knees shaking as he still felt the massive adrenaline rush from the precarious cliffside situation. After giving himself a once-over as a double check to make sure he was alive, he lifted his head to look at Jason. Maybe scold him for being an idiot, maybe hug him for being alive, maybe rip his face off, or maybe... listen in shock as he recites a Horatio Cain one-liner.

"Are... you kidding me?" Brook panted, straightening up and glaring at the buffoon he was friends with. "Are you FUCKING kidding me!?" Brook took a step towards Jason, but he was already collapsed on the ground, laughing his stupid ass off. "I'm going to fucking kill you, I'm gonna kick you right off the cliff, then jump down if you don't die, land on you, and beat you to death!" Jason still laughed. "Stop... stop fucking laughing!" Brook tried to scream, but his words began to degenerate into giggling halfway through that final warning. Upon trying to repeat himself, he just laughed and laughed and laughed some more alongside his friend.

"You're such a damned idiot..."

It took at least five minutes for the two to stop laughing. Jason couldn't even formulate a response to Brook's accusations. In fact the laughter died down with just enough time for Jason's endorphins to wear off and for the pain in his arm to set in. Grimacing slightly he stood up, clutching his hurt arm with his good one. "Well looks like I bit off more than I could chew, thanks for that Brook, I owe you one." Looking downwards at the vibrant pink bush near him, half destroyed thanks to the rescue mission that Brook had enacted, Jason carefully stepped over, plucking a small branch from the bush. "So, is this what you were after mate? It's very... pink."

There was still some blood coming down his arm but it was really from the copious amounts of scrapes that had befallen the boy on his way down, rather than anything serious. Flexing the limb he tested his range of movement. It definitely wasn't broken, but he couldn't rule out fractures. The best bet was to see a doctor as soon as possible and immobilise the limb. He remembered that much from his outdoor education classes. Looking around Jason spotted the branch that had been used to pull him up. Walking over in a semi-daze; exhaustion was now creeping in, he picked up the stick and pulled Brook's shirt off it, throwing the garment to his friend.

"If that's what we're looking for we probably should grab some. I need to splint this arm just in case I think and get to a doctor." Jason's usually up beat tempo was now a little more metered; he didn't feel so well. "I think I've got some strapping tape in my bag still, we could use that. All in all it had been an eventful day, and Jason wouldn't forget his promise to Brook, he'd talk to Tiffany and get her to at least dance with Brook at prom, but for now all he really wanted to do was sleep; it hurt even to move the arm. He would deal with the rest later. Looking over wearily at Brook he forced a smile. "You lead on the way back ok?"
