Full Circle

swings and roundabouts

The parish is set somewhat apart from the main village, and takes the form of a non-denominational chapel. Designed in a classic format with several rows of pews facing a raised stage, it nonetheless doesn't boast any traditional religious icons out in the open. Cupboards and closets contain an assortment of bibles, crucifixes, copies of the Torah, and other items of worship - as well as a few bottles of a particularly good brandy stashed behind the pulpit. Seems someone had their own way of getting closer to God.

((Teo Weinstock continued from Because I Can't Make it on My Own.))

and just like that Teo found himself where he had woken up just over a week ago. The megaphones had blared in the distance but Teo had paid them no heed. The distance and terrain had distorted the speaker and Teo's rage had engulfed him to the point where he just didn't care. If he was in the right frame of mind he might of headed to the beach. Proclaimed his innocence and implored the STAR team to take him on board, or at the very least ensure Simon was not allowed on. However, Teo was not in the right frame of mind. He had lost Simon somewhere along the road and had furiously continued running until he could no longer move at a decent rate.

The remains of the solitary building loomed nearby as Teo took a step out in to the open ground. The sand of the parish was dry from the heat, flecks of blood and disturbed ground gave the indication that there had been more than one scuffle here. Corpses lay strewn across the open ground. This was not a safe place anymore. This was the first place that Teo had truly seen the extent that the students had turned on each other. Bending down he methodically checked the pulses of those nearby, letting his rage bubble down to a low simmer. They were of course long gone from this world.

"At least my kills are clean." Teo murmured to himself. "No one deserves to go out like this. It's barbaric." He moved to another body, taking another overview of location. "What the hell happened here?"

The place was eerily quiet and Teo didn't' like it. It was if a whole bunch of his classmates had just up and disappeared. Before even when he was hiding or moving around the sounds of one person or another were almost always audible, but now, it seemed like like there wasn't another soul within a mile of him. He did some math in his head. There should still be plenty of his classmates still out there, at least 100 and those who were left were likely to be dangerous, smart or just plain lucky.

He finished his checks. Everyone was dead. Teo wasn't happy but he did breathe a sigh of relief. He wouldn't have to kill again. At least not here and not now. The whole thing made him sick. Sure he decided he was going to play, sure he had killed, but it was quick and deliberate. Nothing like the butchery he found here. Those with such a high kill count, Maxwell, Kris, Reiko. They were the murderers here. They were the ones who deserved to die. Teo balled his fists. The whole thing was bullshit, he needed to think.

Pausing by the ruined chapel's wall he let himself work through his train of thought. He was playing to win, that was the only way to escape, to survive, but at the same time he should bring justice to those who were killed brutally. He didn't know how someone could simply turn themselves in to a depraved bastard. He needed to take care of them. He made up his mind. He would explain himself to Nick, to Jessica, they would agree for sure. He pulled out his list of the dead and the killers, tracing his hand to the top of the list, those with the most kills to their names.

He would find these sicko's and hunt them down.

Every.

Last.

One.

[Boy #14 - Alex White. Continued from The Cavalry Arrives.]

Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck.

That fucking hurt.

Alex was limping. Every step was another burning, numb, cold, stabbing, throbbing jolt of pain. He could feel that fucking piece of metal sticking in his leg. Somewhere in there, somewhere deep, somewhere in the meat. Just sitting there, burning and freezing and being a right pain in the god damn ass. Alex didn't even care about the other cuts by now. The ones on his arms, the one above his eye, hell, even the other leg. None of those mattered. Just that one fucking wound.

Fuck it hurt.

Oh sweet Jesus that hurt.

Oh... Oh hell. It's a fucking church. It's a god damn church. He would have started laughing if the movement wouldn't make him want to hack off his leg. He limped to the door.

Checked his gun. One in the chamber, maybe four or five in the clip, he couldn't remember.

Check around the corners.

...Great. Just fucking great. He had to get the one church with someone by it. And to top things off, it's Teo fucking Winstock. Weinstick. Weinstock. That's the one. Another god damn giant of Bayville. Bayview. Yeah, Bayview. Seriously, fuck this pain. Fuck the little bitch that caused it. Fucking Andrea and her shit. Hope she's dead. Hope she got a few more holes too. He knew he hit her, just not how many times, or where exactly. Again, hope she's dead.

Nice little present to bring home.

Right. Check around the corner. Step out, just one step. Try not to get shot. Not yet, at least. No need for more metal. Remember, two kills. Known only for two kills. Rena, and Will. Two kills.

Teo had one. Maybe more, if he'd been as busy as Alex. One kill. Maxwell Crowe. The same announcement Alex had made his debut on, Teo had made his own. Risky, but workable. Just don't get shot. Take a chance.

"Hey, Teo."

Sound hesitant. Sound weak. Keep the gun out of sight. Backpacks, the shit hanging from them, that's fine. Just hide the gun. Don't appear to be a threat. Exaggerate injuries. Lean against the wall... Good. That should do it.

That should do it.

Roll the dice.

Teo looked up. He had been expecting Nick, or even Jessica to be the first to reach him here but the figure before him wasn't either of the two. Clearly he had outpaced the duo by a large distance. They probably hadn't ran either so it wasn't too surprising. Instead the limping form of Alex came out on to the blood drenched sand of the parish grounds. Teo looked at him appraisingly. The boy was bleeding from multiple cuts and bruises and he was limping quite badly. An assortment of items hung from his backpack but he wasn't carrying any weapons visibly.

Careful though Teo thought to himself. He wouldn't still be alive if he was that stupid.

Teo rested one hand on the stock of the compound crossbow strapped across his back, the bow itself hanging neatly across his abdomen. He tapped the stock lightly, not enough to make a noise but obviously enough to demonstrate he could shoot if Alex tried anything tricky.

After taking his time reviewing the newcomer Teo continued to lounge against the wall. Casually gesturing at Alex he spoke softly, a slight grin on his face. "You look like shit Alex. Had a disagreement with someone?"

Teo considered his options. He probably could get a shot off on the kid, and Alex looked pretty banged up already, but once again it wasn't worth it in terms of risk, reward at this stage. Perhaps Alex had some food, or a gun. If so then something could be worked out. Plus Teo was hunting players now, and Alex wasn't really a player. Useful allies go far, but still... with that amount of blood Teo knew something had gone down. He wasn't about to let his guard down until Alex explained exactly what.

Worse case scenario Nick and Jessie weren't far behind.

((Nick LeMonde continued from Because I Can't Make It On My Own))

Nick was itchy. It was a brand new suit with a crisp shirt and he couldn't stop pulling at the collar. The feeling was getting under his skin and he shifted and fidgeted. He pulled at the material and squirmed. His mother slapped his hand away.

"Stop it, hun," she whispered.

He sighed and looked ahead. It wasn't a particularly good morning for him. He was tired from a match on Saturday and the new suit wasn't helping anything. He shook his head and tried to pay attention.

"Luke 23: Verse 39," the man at the pulpit announced. "One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: 'Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!' But the other criminal rebuked him. 'Don't you fear God,' he said, 'since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.' Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'

Jesus answered him, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'"

He cleared his throat and continued.

"And in so his actions on the cross, the good thief was forgiven by the Lord, Jesus Christ."

Nick wasn't a fan of the story; just another thing to make the morning mildly annoying. There was no telling what sort of person the good thief had been before; after all, he did steal and it was the single mention of him in the Bible. It rubbed him the wrong way that he could get a ticket into heaven just by doing the right thing at the very end.

He noticed movement all around him. Everyone was standing and so he stood too, straightening out his suit. Nick looked down at a Bible in the pew and then up at the empty pulpit.

Nick gazed at the empty pulpit. It sideways on the floor amongst other scattered debris. There were stray pages of scripture, strewn like confetti around bodies and overturned pews. It seemed like a lifetime ago that he'd started here. He was so happy-go-lucky. He thought they could talk things out and he laughed at Julian's jokes about ren faires. Nick was ashamed that his past self was so naïve.

He'd walked up with Jessica to the parish, trying to keep up with Teo. There had been some noise that sounded like a megaphone but he couldn't make out what the voice wanted. As he stood, leaning into the open door and taking in the sight of the gutted church he suddenly noticed Teo in front. There was some person slouching against the wall. He looked hurt.

Nick had his katana with him, but this person didn't look like they were going to be fighting soon. It was so quiet.

"Teo," he said, just to let them both know he was there. He reached back to Jessica to stop her from going forward before he knew what the situation was. He didn't realize that in just swinging his arm backward without looking he bumped his arm against her chest. He cleared his throat, looked around nervously for a second and then moved his arm down to a more acceptable location.

"You uh... you could say that, I guess."

Alex's game of chance had paid off, even if it was only a small reward. Perhaps not worth the risk, but it was better than no reward at all, and Alex was willing to take whatever he could get. If all he could get was a few minutes of peace when someone else was around, he'd take it. At least, until he was patched up. Wait until he wasn't bleeding before getting another hole. He'd rather not get shot. Getting shot was not something Alex was keen on doing. He preferred doing the shooting.

"Got on someone's bad side. Came out worse for it. But I'm alive, and that's what counts, right?"

Keep up the act. Don't seek to escalate tension. Diffuse it for as long as possible.

"Mind if we take this inside? I'm kind of... bleeding everywhere."

The smaller cuts had long since stopped, but that damn hole in his leg was still going pretty good. He needed to get that thing out. Needed time to set his leg up, and go at it with the first aid kit. Making time meant keeping up appearances. Didn't need to make Teo suspicious. He looks suspicious already, but there is no point in making it worse. Things can get worse after he'd saw to the metal in his legs and the open cuts that were basically everywhere. At least his own blood was masking the stains of Rosa's, of Annaliese's. Hell, there probably was some of Isabel's on his pant leg, but that was soaked through by now with his own.

He still wondered how long it would take him to reach that very special hell.

"Friends of yours, Teo?"

Alex nodded in the direction of Nick and some other girl, someone he didn't quite recognize. At least not when she was red. He wiped his eyes again, blinked a few times. Took another look. Jessica. The names that went with the newcomers were few, but there was one. Mike Jeffries. Alex remembered Nick's name on the list, some time ago. What had it been, two? Three days? He didn't know. Didn't really care. As far as he was concerned, they were on even ground now. They would know of two, and he knew of theirs.

An equal amount of distrust, in his book.

"Ah, fuck."

Alex played up the injury to his leg, but it didn't need much playing. The muscles were tense, and every time he moved it even an inch, pain shot all the way up to his hip. It throbbed in his head, caught in his chest, made him grit his teeth and suck in air between them. He swore he could feel that thing in his leg, beyond the sheer pain. Could swear he could feel it just sitting there, jagged and twisted and bloody. He could picture the damn thing and the damage it had done. The damage it would do.

That one wouldn't be healing any time soon.

Alex took a step forward, stumbled, braced himself against the wall. And hid the gun. In his pants, under his shirt, tucked away as quick as he could manage. Within reach, outside of sight. Out of sight, out of mind.

Keep them in the dark.

"Little help?"

For a little while longer.

(Jessica Pentangeli continued from ...Because I can't make it on my own.)

Jessica kept quiet during the whole ordeal. She didn't have much to say, and she didn't want to bother Nick or Teo. She kept close to Nick, her hand laced with his like it had been for the past day. His hand felt familiar. It made her feel safe. She didn't need anything else, she had all she wanted. Jessica worried for a moment whether she was being cowardly, clinging to Nick like this. Then she brushed the thought aside, and didn't think of it again.

The inside of the church made Jessica cling to Nick even tighter. She could smell blood. Weren't churches supposed to be safe havens? Jessica felt a shiver come on. There really wasn't any safe place on the island, was there? Jessica did well to stick behind Nick and -

...

...

... Did Nick just...

No. It must have been an accident. Yeah. It was just his arm, that was all. She was worrying too much. She should stop worrying so much. Yeah. Wait. What if he meant to touch her? What if he was trying to be quiet about it? Was he... hitting on her? No. No. He couldn't be, not here and certainly not now! But what if he was? No, Nick was a nice boy, he wouldn't do that. No, this was all in her mind. Wait! Was she staring at Nick? Jessica quickly turned away before Nick could notice. Would he judge her for staring?! She hoped not!

Jessica stopped. She saw the other boy.

This was really strange. She was thinking about boys while someone is bleeding to death in front of her.

Teo narrowed his eyes as Alex walked past. The boy seemed hurt enough and despite Teo's suspicions Alex neither lunged at him or drew any kind of weapon. He let himself momentarily relax as he spotted Nick enter the outskirts of the parish along with Jessica. He glanced momentarily at Alex before moving towards the duo.

"Nick, can I have a word real quick." He placed his free hand on Nick and led him slightly away from Jessica. Leaning in close he nodded towards the chapel. "By my thinking there's less than a hundred of us left on this island, which means whoever is still alive was either smart, brutal or," he paused for a second glancing over to Jessica, "just plain lucky." He looked back at Nick. "Alex is in that chapel but he's wounded. We need to make some decisions here bro. If we're going to survive this isn't going to be easy and we're going to need to figure out how to do this step by step."

Teo sighed for a moment, composing his thoughts. "Nick, I know you were friends with Jessica in school, hell maybe even more, but the thing is I wouldn't say Jessica is lucky you know? She wouldn't of got this far without doing something. Sure, she's not on the list but with a face like that I'm sure she could convince someone to do her work for her." Teo gave Nick a quick pat on the shoulder. "Look, I'm not saying we should off her, just, keep an eye out yeah? This is a win or lose scenario and we can't take any risks, not this close to the end."

"Anyway," Teo said, speaking louder now so that Jessica could hear. "We have an injured in this chapel, it would be rude not to see if he is alright."

Moving towards the doors he motioned for Nick and Jessica to have their weapons at the ready. Teo gently pushed open the door, stepping over the corpse that lay still just outside before making his way through the pews, his fingers drumming against the side of his crossbow.

The hidden speakers crackled in to life. ""Hi there. My name's Greynolds..."

[Skipping with permission from Ruggahissy.]

Well, expecting help was a little much. But it didn't hurt to ask. Alex stumbled and limped his way into the church itself, through the doors and to the pews. He took a spot near the front, lying back on one of the pews, thankful to finally take his weight off that leg. Thankful to finally have a moment to rest. But he didn't have long. It was only a matter of time.

He could hear them talking.

"Gotta get to work."

He muttered to himself, pulled the backpacks off of his back, dug through them. Pulled out the first aid kits. There were a lot of them, but he only needed two. His own, and one of the others. Soon enough, he had the contents spread out in front of him. He lined everything up next to his leg. Bandages and gauze, tweezers and scissors and butterfly stitches. He held a bit of cloth in his teeth, folded and rolled and thick. Already, he could feel his heart racing. His breathing picking up. He hadn't even done anything yet, and he was panicking. He wiped his face, shook his head. Tried to calm his nerves.

Cut open his pant leg, and peeled it back.

Fuck. His leg looked like it had gone through a meat grinder. Bloody as all hell with cuts all over. A great hole in the side where the biggest hunk of shrapnel had hit him. He cracked open one of the bottle of water, poured the contents over his leg. Cleaned away the blood. It didn't look too bad when it was cleaned. He wouldn't be winning any contests any time soon. He should be fine for walking, but running?

He breathed deep. Opened the gauze. Grabbed the tweezers.

Bit down.

Muffled screams.

Cursing.

Fast, heavy breathing.

And another try.

Again.

Again.

Again.

It took a couple tries, but he finally got it. Finally worked it out. He was bleeding again, but he had plenty of gauze. Sweat and blood stung his eyes, but he was done. The hard part was over. His heart was pounding in his chest and he could barely catch his breath, but he was done. Things could only get better from here.

He closed the wound as best he could, layered on the gauze, wrapped it tight in bandages. He didn't care about the smaller cuts. They'd long stopped bleeding, and he was fine with that. He stripped off his pants, tested that leg. Put hit weight on it. Winced, took a step, and limped. But it was good. It was better. Sat back down and checked his other leg. Pink, with flakes of red, but pink. The cut Ray had left him with had healed. Another scar. Alex went to worked, replacing bandages, placing new ones. The small cuts on his arms and legs taken care of with little more than band-aids. He closed the cut above his eye, cleaned the blood off his face. Rinsed his eyes.

Sat back, half naked, relaxed and thankful for the time he'd been given to rest. But he didn't have long.

He dug through the bags, and found some clothes that fit, that he hadn't turned into cord or rope. The shirt was a little tight, a little long, and the pants were a little baggy, but some quick work with the scissors fixed all that. He cut the pants down to shorts, and removed the sleeves from the shirt. Tossed the scraps into the bag, closed it all up. And heard the rattle of his pills.

Alex actually smiled when he heard that sound. He picked out the bottles, poured a few of the pills into his hand. They were exactly what he wanted. Exactly what he needed. Popped them into his mouth, downed them with a swig of water, and went back to work.

Got ready to make a break for it.

Just in time, too.

It wasn't Danya, but he knew what time it was. The announcements. He knew he'd be on them. He knew that his name would be out there now. A lot of people liked Rosa, whore that she was, and Alex was pretty sure that her brother was still around. The more pressing concern, however, were the people that were less than a hundred feet from where he was. Teo, and Nick, and Jessica. Alex may have been tied with Ilario, and may have been on more than a few shit lists now including Ilario's, but the threats he knew were more important than the ones he didn't.

Teo, and Nick, and Jessica. All armed. Right there with him.

"...Fuck."

Alex turned to face the rest of them. No use trying to deny any of it. Deep down, part of him welcomed it. It was a rush. The greatest fucking rush he ever felt. He was good at this. He knew success in this. Success that he didn't have very often with anything else. Yeah, this was his game. He knew how to play it, he knew how to survive it, and he'll be damned it he was going to let it end yet.

He watched them.

And smiled.

"Time to go again?"

And he listened as Greynolds read off the list.

Listened as his name was called out.

That grin returned as Annaliese and Rosa were called out as his.

"Let's do this."

Oh, that familiar rush.

Nick's hand dropped down to Jessica's stomach. He felt her beneath her shirt gasp just a little bit, and then meet his hand again. She must have been surprised. There had been a an agreeable softness when he'd swung his arm. Jessica was a pleasant tactile experience, he concluded. The implications of that started to sink and he was about to look back at her to see what her reaction was when suddenly he was pulled away. The tips of his fingers grazed along the ribbing of her tank top until he had to let her go all together.

It was Teo. He wanted to talk to him. He nodded when Teo said there would be decisions. He knew that well enough. Nick was stood up straighter when Teo mentioned Jessica. "Her....face?" He looked back at her. She as was cute as a whole industrial block of button factories. He shook his head. The thought of having to kill her never crossed his mind. But.... he couldn't deny Teo had a point. There would have to be a point where one of them would die.

He liked her, but what if Teo was right? Maybe there were other boys that liked her. When they found her she was alone, but uninjured and in good shape. What had she done to keep all of that? Was it possible that she was using him?

He held his breath and looked at her again. Nick nodded his head in the direction of the chapel and walked in after Teo. Inside the kid was sewing himself up it looked like. Nick was about to say something but when he opened his mouth, the loud speakers spoke instead.

The corner of his mouth tugged into a frown. "Girls," he said. "Not murder-y ones. You killed girls."

... Surprised didn't even begin to describe what Jessica was feeling. and yet, Jessica didn't make a move to pull away from Nick. In fact, she subconsciously let Nick's hand rest against her stomach. His hand was firm, but gentle. The touches had sent her heart tumbling, and Jessica had moved her hand to meet Nick's... but that was when Nick was pulled away, and Jessica was left alone.

She was blushing. She didn't have a mirror, but then again she didn't need one. She moved her hand to her cheek. Her heart was fluttering. She followed Nick and Teo a few steps away. Jessica was worried. Were they taking about her? What was there to talk about? Jessica was only the useless girl who sat in the back of class. She was paranoid though. She took a step forward, turning her ear. Nick looked at her and Jessica froze, but he quickly turned away. She got close enough to hear.

"Look, I'm not saying we should off her, just, keep an eye out yeah?"

... Jessica didn't like Teo. She didn't like him one bit. She narrowed her eyes and turned away. She sighed loudly and pressed her hand against the back of her neck. The speakers turned on. Her mind was numb like always.

She only knew two things. Nick's name wasn't on there. Someone else's was. Jessica gasped when she heard.

Alex...

Jessica popped her head back to Nick. Her heart sank. Alex had died? Trying to escape? That was... it... it served her right. Served her damn right. Leaving Jessica alone like that. Jessica had never been so scared in her entire life. Selfish... Jessica felt a tear run down her cheek. She wiped it off. Alex was the one who hurt her! Even so, she had lost her best friend. She was empty again.

Nick was the only one left. She turned to look at him.

"Uhm," Jessica just realized the silence in the room. She looked around nervously. "N-Nick? T-Teo?"

((GM'ing approved by a council of jedi))

Teo froze as the announcements crackled over the speakers. The next ten seconds seemed to feel like he was caught in slow motion. He could see every wrinkle of Alex's face as a smile blossomed across his face, every cog turning as a dark realisation crossed Nicks face, the echoing crisp snap of the debris under Jessica's foot as she stepped into the building. He reached for his crossbow, arm moving slow, too slow.

Alex's hand seemed to move on command around the grip of his gun as it appeared from the waistband of his pants. His own weapon was agonizingly heavy in his hands, impossible to pull up in time. Every details of Alex's gun was seen in crystal clear clarity. The thin sheen of the metal, the cold ominous darkness of the barrel, the firm compression of the trigger as Alex's finger squeezed the firing mechanism.

The pew Teo was standing behind exploded in a fine mist of splinters and sawdust as he dropped to one side, firing off a bolt from his crossbow as he did so. He heard the scrambling of Alex as he swiftly rolled in to cover from his position.

Shit. That kid is no where as wounded as he was pretended to be. Teo thought as he pushed up from the ground and quickly considered his options. Nick was going to be protecting Jessica which effectively put him out of this one. He could move to one side but he needed to close the distance and fast. The pew in front of him was bolted to the ground and far too large to utilise in any mobile capacity.

No cover then, but Alex will probably shoot at that bloody sitting duck, he wouldn't be thinking Teo would push him

Jessica wasn't exactly the fastest girl out there, a bit chubby by Teo's standards and honestly he didn't see what Nick saw in her. Either way Alex wasn't going to be just sitting around so Teo had to move fast.

Well that's that then. Over the top

Taking a deep breath Teo vaulted the pew

[Sorry for the delay. Been working on things so I can move.]

This was going to be fun.

Teo went for his weapon, and Alex didn't hesitate. Sure enough, before Teo even got a chance to aim that crossbow of his, Alex had his gun out from his belt and was staring down the sights at Teo's horrified face. Yes, the truth finally came to Teo in full, stunning clarity over the loudspeakers. Alex had killed more than just two people. Alex killed in more than just self defense. Alex killed without clear cause, without hesitation, without holding back. He may have lost control at first, but he got it back. Oh how he got it back. He did so well in this game, it seemed, that he was being rewarded for it. He may have not been the only one to receive a reward, but he got a reward and all he needed to do was go and pick it up.

After he was done here, that's just what he would do.

Alex pulled the trigger, and Teo went down. Did he get hit? No, no. It was reflex. It was survival instinct. Find cover behind something, even if it was only wood. Even if it wasn't decent cover at all when faced with speeding lead. When Teo went down, Alex could swear he felt something zip by him somewhere nearby, but this was no time to sit and wonder. Before Teo got a chance to fire off another bolt, Alex slipped behind the pews, shoved away the trash, and moved. Away from where he was standing. Off to the side, and further, staying behind the pews.

He could hear movement. Certainly couldn't see it, but he could hear it. Teo moving, Nick moving, Jessica moving, taking cover and hiding from him. He heard them move and he moved in kind, further down the pew, away from where he had been standing. If they opened fire, if they had anything to open fire with, they would shoot there. But it wouldn't take them long to figure things out. No, Alex needed to think fast, needed to act faster. He needed a way out. They were by the door and he wasn't, and he needed to get past them.

Take inventory.

Gun with maybe five bullets.

Two grenades.

One spear.

A sling he hasn't used, and a bunch of glass pieces for ammo.

Two heavy ass bags full of shit.

Right. He knew what to do. He had time enough to do this, but not much else. It would have to work. One bag held his stuff, his clothes, his rope, his cordage, that damn army helmet. The other had everything important, the maps, the food, the water, the name tags. He needed to lose some of the weight to run, needed to make it easier on his leg. It would hurt like hell, dear god would it hurt, but he was going to have to make a run for it. Time to lose some dead weight.

He pulled the heavy bag off. Left it there on the ground. Pulled one of the grenades from his belt.

Pulled the pin. Tucked it somewhere safe.

Alex stood up as Teo was vaulting, making his way over pews, making his way to Alex. And he held up the grenade.

"Smile. You're on candid camera."

And he stared down the sights. Gun in one hand. Grenade in the other.

"Now back the fuck off, or we all die today."

((Sexual harassment and weapon grab approved))

There was a moment of crystallized silence. Teo and Nick were looking at Alex while Alex's eyes shifted between them. From beside him he heard Jessica's small voice. She only said their names, but it was a question. The tension made the room claustrophobic and set Nick on edge. As soon as he saw the gun, Nick threw his mass to the side. He saw Teo fire off a crossbow bolt just seconds after a deafening shot resonated back and forth through the small parish.

Nick wasn't very agile or graceful, but jumping sideways and pretty much tackling Jessica to the floor seemed to have worked. The two of them had landed behind the relative safety of a row of pews. His limbs were tensed in a sort of hug around her body, cradling her head inwards. Above them he saw some of the wood splinter out. Slowly he unwound his arms from around her and pushed up so that he was looking down on her. He inspected her. She looked unharmed. He didn't feel any pain, he supposed that meant he was also unharmed.

"You're okay," he sighed.

He breathed deeply and felt something odd. He looked down and discovered her chest was pushing against his. He could feel her heart beating through him. He swallowed.

"I was just..."

He'd used himself as a shield for her. What if Teo was right? What if she'd played him. Her face was getting to be a rather interesting shade of strawberry red.

"I just..."

Alex broke the silence by threatening to kill them all. Nick scrambled upright and yanked Jessica up with him, grabbing the fabric of her tank top. He peaked over the edge of the pew to see Alex waving around a grenade. He held his breath hoping he'd leave them in peace. Guy was a nutter, but he wouldn't kill himself with them, would he? Next to where Jessica fell was her rifle. He grabbed it and held it ready, just in case.

"Go on. Get going. We don't want to get exploded any more than you do."

... oh god.

Jessie's heart pounded. Her head felt light. What just happened? Well she knew what happened, she had watched the whole scene unfold with her own two eyes. Her head was dizzy, and piecing it all together was a challenge. The one thing that she did know, the thing that stuck to Jessica's mind, was that Nick was pressed up against her chest. Her face bled a fine, red blush and she froze. Nick was... on top of her. TOUCHING her.

She didn't tell him to stop, or for him to get off. She was much too confused for that. She could have registered how comfortable she felt, how she was more freaking out over how she was so close to Nick. That wasn't it though. Her heart pounded in her throat, and she quickly curled her shoulders up.

"It... It's fine."

Nick helped her back up, but Jessica didn't rise all the way up. Nick had grabbed her tanktop so hard that she was afraid he was going to rip it. She quickly fiddled with it, staggering behind Nick as he spoke. She really had no clue what was happening, but the way Nick was talking scared her. Better to be safe.

Perhaps she shouldn't have been close enough to touch Nick but... well, she had to hide. And Nick was really tall.

(Just a short one, waiting on rolls)

Teo froze in mid sprint as Alex pulled the grenade from his side. This was not a factor the boy had taken in to account. He let out an exasperated growl and stared at Alex.

"I don't think you're stupid enough to pull that pin, but then again I didn't expect you to have a grenade in your pocket."

Teo didn't have a ranged weapon at the ready which meant that Alex had the advantage and once they reached a certain distance he could just turn and shoot. Teo took a slow step backwards, his eyes darting to one side to assess the possibilities of cover. Nick spoke up from the other end and Teo nodded grimly.

"Better do as he says Alex. Rest assured I will find you and I will wipe that smug grin off your face."

Teo took another cautious step back. He probably could get behind some of those pews if Alex actually decided it was worth killing himself right then and there, but he wasn't sure about the cover that would provide. Better than nothing though.
