Thank You For Being A Friend

A.K.A The One Where Carol Dies (maybe private? Ask first)

Once the students leave the mansion grounds they will find a small area used for athletic activity. It seems that the owner was one who enjoyed his fair share of exercise. Going north, students will find a tennis court surrounded by an unlocked plastic link fence. Those going south will find a sloped putting green as well as a small but deep bunker.

Thank You For Being A Friend

((Carol Burke continued from Lean On Me))

Resting. She should be calm.

And yet, she wasn't.

She heard the gunshots. Simon was most likely gone. That person got him. Carol knew she wasn't particularly bright, but even she knew that there wasn't a good chance he got out alive. She tried to keep her hopes up with things that she would tell herself, like "Maybe he managed to escape. Maybe he fought them off and is looking for us. Maybe he's safe". But her thoughts would loop back to the idea that he was... no more.

And it seemed as if their attacker had gone after them as well. She was sure that she heard gunshots in their direction. They weren't satisfied with just Simon. They wanted to kill them, too. Whoever it was, it wasn't someone who was simply scared. It was a truly bad person. Carol kept thinking that it was Kris or that guy that was with her, but was it really?

Simon... he was really gone, wasn't he? He just simply decided to die, right then and there. Died fighting. It was for them. He just wanted them to be saved, right? He didn't have to just let himself die! He could have made it out. They could have made it out, all three of them. And that person killed him, for no apparent reason.

Carol was too tired to cry. Her tears had only dried up some time ago, and now she was all worn out. As she sat on the ground of what appeared to be an outdoor sports area, resting after they came here just a few minutes ago, she couldn't help but think. Where was Jacob and Ben? They were doing well, she hoped. She had lost Rein and Kari, didn't she? They didn't get killed, did they? She and Simon had lost them around... the time Hermione showed up? She guessed so.

Hermione was gone too. She saw it happen, even cradled her head in her hands for a few seconds. Her smile had long since been etched into her mind. And yet Carol spent the last few minutes of her life being angry at her.

She shuddered on the spot.

God, did she really just let Hermione die? Hermione and Simon... they both died and she did nothing about it. All she did was run away.

What was worse was, she didn't even say "Thank you" to Simon. He had tolerated her all those days, and pretty much died in the hopes of stalling their attacker. She did nothing to help. All she did was scream and cry...

But, she saved Reiko, didn't she?

Reiko was clearly hurt, and she was in the middle of a fight when they found her. She could've died. Plus, now that she was here she had no reason to kill anymore, right? If it came time to defend themselves, Carol had a shotgun. She could just scare them all away with it. Reiko shouldn't have to kill, after all. Reiko, deep down, wasn't the type to kill. There was no reason for her to be forced to kill.

She'd protect her. Keep her from harm.

That's what friends do, right?

And Reiko was too hurt...

So, she needed help.

Should she take a look at Reiko's wounds? They might get infected or something! And she might be really hurt. Kris and that other guy, they seemed to have done quite a number on her. Carol could see a bunch of scratch and bruise marks on her face and she seemed to have trouble walking, and there seemed to be more problems she couldn't see. It was a good idea to at least patch her up for the time being.

A look at the tiny Asian nearby her. Yes, she definitely needed help. Why didn't she take care of that sooner, even if they just got here? She was going to be hurt even more! What if her leg had been sliced open? She heard that it was real easy to get gangrene out in the wilderness, what if it got it? She didn't know what to do then!

A deep breath, and Carol spoke again to her.

"Hey Reiko? I think we have first aid kits put in our bags. Do you need... y'know... patching up? I think they mentioned an Infirmary as well, maybe we could head on over like... I dunno... tomorrow morning?"

A look up at the sky told her it was getting much too late to do any more traveling. It was already starting to become dusk, and frankly Carol was too tired already. Plus, Reiko needed her rest. That was going to help her get better, right? Carol didn't know much about first aid, but she was sure she could learn.

((Reiko Ishida continued from Lean on Me))

Shortly after the two girls made their escape, Reiko and Carol made it to some sort of outdoor recreational centre, where the two now rested. The small girl hadn't said a word, sitting away from her friend and lost in her own thoughts. The gun, the very one that took her sister's life, was being held in a tight grip in her left hand. Such a harmless looking object, and yet it had such lethality. Just pull the trigger and boom, dead.

She wanted to throw the thing away. Find a cliff or a body of water or something and get rid of the disgusting weapon. Yet at the same time, she didn't. The gun gave her a sense of... comfort she didn't feel before when she only had her sais. It was a different feeling having a weapon that didn't require much effort to use. Plus... something inside her felt like there was something more at work. Or maybe it was the lack of sleep. Either way, she was holding on to that gun, until she met Kris again.

She needed to survive that long first though. Reiko glanced over at Carol, who wasn't looking at her at that moment. Carol was a friend... Carol could be trusted.... but Carol just left a friend behind to die. That... didn't bode well. Maybe... maybe Reiko had been better off before, while she was alone. No one to take care of, no one to have to watch... she doubted that Carol was going to just let her leave though...

Just then, Carol started talking, saying something about looking at her wounds. Reiko... didn't want that. She would rather have Carol stay where she was... easier to keep track of her over there... besides, she was fine, fit as a fiddle! or whatever the phrase was. To prove the point Reiko stood up, stretching out as much as she could. She still hurt like hell, but she'd regained most of her mobility, the intense pain she'd felt that morning had dulled to a weak throb.

"I'm fine, see?" Reiko energetically did a couple of jumping jacks to prove she was fine and didn't need to be looked after. Those few jumping jacks didn't do much for her ribs, but she managed to hide the pain. As long as it kept Carol over there... away from her for now...

((Rizzo Vitoria continued from They F**king Work Because... ))

Rizzo walked in silence with OC for what felt like ages. He still had no idea where they were going, nor where their former-follower Carla had gone.

It wasn't important. It couldn't be important. Not when the other 200 of their classmates were after them, blades and guns flailing wildly in whatever effort they gave to slaughter... Sure, they'd only come across one Player - Nick. Was it Nick Reid? Thankfully he'd left them alone. But just because there hadn't been two hundred names read out as murderers, it didn't mean they weren't considering it.

He was lost in his own thoughts when he realised he needed to pee. He was so happy at the fact he had retained that much water, he put his bags down and unzipped his pants right next to the nearest tree!

Before he'd finished, he realised something. He didn't tell OC.

"Fuck..." he muttered - urinating didn't seem like so hot of an accomplishment when it left him alone and defenceless. He still had that headache, despite the sleep he'd managed to get, and his joints were aching like he had arthritis. If this was how arthritics felt...

"OC...?" he asked meekly. Perhaps the larger teen had noticed and come back. Yeah, just like they instantly turned back for Carla... He was probably long-gone now, glad of the fact the sickly, weak, midget had gotten himself lost! He'd make excellent time in finding whoever he was looking for whilst Rizzo was hung, drawn, quartered, shot, stabbed and set aflame!

"Bastard!" he spat, zipping his jeans back up and grabbing his bags. Though the sudden motion did nothing more than make his head spin again. He growled in annoyance as he started to walk again. He hadn't a clue where he was, where the Dangerzones were and he was pretty sure he didn't have a map.

After a few minutes, he noticed the trees were thinning. Perhaps this was the mansion area - or a golf course perhaps. Though, was an open space really the best place to wind up?

At her question Reiko rose to her feet, and started speaking, saying she was fine.

And, to prove her point, she started doing jumping jacks.

Carol couldn't help but give a sad smile. Oh Reiko. Really, what was there to expect from her? In a way, it was kind of entertaining to see her do jumping jacks like this in spite of her condition.

And yet...

Carol couldn't help but think that Reiko didn't trust her.

This entire time, it was as if she was trying to avoid her. Why? They were friends... right? There was nothing for them to be worried about. It wasn't as if she was just some random stranger off the street. She was Carol Burke. They knew each other from school. They hung out together all the time.

Plus, Reiko needed her rest. There was no need for her to tire herself out further. Though, it was nice to see she was in better condition, of course.

She wanted to say something to her. Carol obviously knew that Reiko had killed. But that wasn't her Reiko, or Ben's Reiko, or Jacob's Reiko, or Reika's Reiko, or Paige's Reiko, or Amber's Reiko, or Sarah's Reiko. Reiko was most probably scared, like everyone else was. They probably attacked her, for whatever reason. She knew Reiko to be a good person, there was no reason for her to kill in cold blood. Carol always had good things to say about her to her friends back home. She didn't want Reiko to think she hated her, did she?

"Reiko..." she started.

What would get Reiko to stop distrusting her?

"I'm sorry."

Her smile remained.

"I just want you to know... you're a good friend of mine. I've never had anything bad to say about you that I can think of."

A pause. Deep breath.

"You don't have to... you know... if someone attacks us, I can fight them off. You don't have to fight, not... not any..."

Carol looked down on the ground. Damn it, none of them deserved to be here. They could have been at the campsite, talking as normal. The worse thing that would've happened was that they got bug bites. Everyone would have been friends again. Reika, Paige, and Amber would have still been alive. So would have been Simon and Hermione. It wasn't fair. Not only was Danya responsible for her friends' and classmates' deaths, but he was tearing them apart emotionally as well.

A tremble passed through her body as her smiled faded.

"I'm sorry."

She had no clue was she was apologizing so much. If she didn't know any better, she would have stood up and hugged Reiko, right at this moment. She knew she couldn't, shouldn't do that.

Reiko stopped her jumping jacks quickly after she started, not wanting to hurt herself in some foolish manner. Carol started rambling about something or other, saying sorry and stuff. She almost sounded cute, stuttering and saying how she'd protect her and everything. Poor little Carol Burke, she really thought she could help. The sentiment was touching, but it didn't matter to Reiko. Carol had run out on one friend, what's to stop her from doing it again? Trust only made you vulnerable in this game. Then again, who said anything about trusting? It would be nice to have someone to watch her back.

"Carol... It's okay. I understand." Reiko didn't quite know what she was saying, but it sounded sincere enough. Carol was probably the only person left on the island who didn't think she was a raving lunatic, no sense in chasing her away. Then again, maybe she just wanted to lure her in. Of all of her friends, Reiko knew Carol the least, although at this point the ones she knew the most had long since died. Not that she would have trusted those two gossips anyways.

The small girl found herself in a bit of a predicament. Having someone to look after you and help you out would be nice, on the other hand Reiko was quickly learning to trust no one. Or course, Carol wasn't going to leave, which meant Reiko would have to do something... drastic to scare her off. If she wanted to. She didn't know yet... Carol was nice... but was she trust worthy? She... didn't know yet, she needed more time to think. For now though, she would keep the girl around.

Rizzo walked out of the tree line and slowed down his walking speed. He didn't want to make too much noise...

He looked around the greens and heard voices. Two girl voices... Who was it? Frightened girls? Janet, maybe? Janet looking for a strong, friendly shoulder to cry on?

And when she laughed at his offer, then what?

He sighed and headed towards the voices. He needed to at least spy on them - find out if they were killers or just lesbians.

Lesbians... If only. And if only he felt up to it. He figured that, even with the deadliness of their situation, that he'd have had at least one unintended erection from a tree shaped like breasts, or a rock that reminded him of his one night of sex...

He was hidden behind a bush and couldn't really hear what they were saying, so he put his bags down and carefully moved closer. Just a few words such as 'we did not kill anyone, ever' and he'd pipe up.

"Carol... It's okay. I understand."

In spite of herself her smile appeared again.

Really.

They were together now. All they needed to do was find everyone else, and find a way out. She was still sure that they were going to be saved. The military knew things by now, and they weren't getting away with this. For Amber, Reika, Paige, Simon, Hermione, and everyone else who had died here, they were going to live. All they needed to do was find a way out.

She was sure they could do it.

They just needed to work together, is all. No problem.

So they should just rest here, then. Go find everyone once morning came.

Simple as that.

A thudding noise came from a distance.

Was that someone else?

Oh god, please be Ben or Jacob or someone else like that. Please!

"Reiko, stay put. I'm going to take a look", she whispered, grabbing her gun off the ground where it lay. Lifting herself off the ground, she went over to where she thought the sound came from.

Was it those bushes?

Okay, see who's there. Then fire on them if they're another attacker.

Now, there are a lot of rules that someone should remember if they are operating a gun, for safety's sake. First, do not keep a loaded gun around without putting the safety on. Second, you must concentrate on where you are pointing it as much as possible. And third? For the love of God, do not place your finger on the trigger unless you are about to shoot something on purpose.

Carol Burke as of right now though, was pretty much breaking all of them right at this moment.

Yes, the gun was loaded. Yes, the safety was off. Yes, Carol was a tired and scared teenage girl, who had been previously shown to have trouble paying attention. And yes, one finger was gently touching the trigger, and with one little pull...

Of course, she didn't know any of this unfortunately.

Her heart started to beat as she held the gun with both hands, one on the handle and the other on the pump. That's how you held it, right? She'd never fired it before, so she had no clue.

As she approached the bush, she pulled the pump back out and in, just in case. Okay, let's just hope she was doing the right thing with this gun.

"Who's there? We have guns, but we mean-"

Her grip was unsteady, and she couldn't concentrate on where to point it. Carol was simply too tired and scared. Oh god, please be someone who could help!

Her trigger finger slipped.

For a second, she heard a loud sound like a small firecracker bursting near her. The gun's recoil pushed it back, causing it to hit Carol's chest and for her to almost drop it. It felt like a large boxer was punching her in the chest!

The good news was that Carol wasn't hurt significantly.

The bad news was that what was on the other side of the bush wasn't so fortunate.

Rizzo froze when he noticed one of the girls start to get up. He didn't dare to move - what was she doing? Walking towards him? Why!? She heard him?

His mind raced, not wanting to make a decision on this. Fight or flight, she looked like she was holding a gun. A gun! People were given swords, guns, bigger guns... And he had a fucking boom box. He hadn't even bothered to turn it on and find out what was in the tape deck. What if he never got to find out? What if he was wrong - these two were Players who had kill lists so big, the morning announcement wasn't long enough to fit all the names in?!

"Who's there? We have guns, but we mean-"

Rizzo was shocked by the speaking, but even more surprised by the quite loud 'snap' that caused him to yelp, jump back and fall onto his back.

He did jump, didn't he...?

Why was there a new pain along with the aches and pains of the past few days? And why did he wet himself? He only just went!

He looked down at his leg where the hot prick of pain had begun stabbing. What happened...? He felt his crotch - it was dry. He peed his thigh downwards? How the fuck did he do that? He wasn't exactly hung like a racehorse.

"Wh-what's going on...?" he muttered as his breathing began to come in pants and gasps, touching the painful area. It was hot and sticky - and there was a hole in his pants. "I don't..."

There was a growing, loud throbbing noise in his head and everything was starting to get fuzzy. And he was peeing quite a lot now... No - he was peeing the not-pee, from his thigh. It couldn't be blood... Right?

Reiko was content to let Carol go do whatever. If she got herself killed then oh well. She doubted that Carol would get killed. That would be unfortunate. Still, there's not much that she could do if it happened. Reiko was just about to sit down when she heard the gunshot. she jogged in the direction Carol had gone, curious to see what had just happened.

What she would was not a pretty sight. Carol was staring at someone on the ground with a look of horror on her face, they recently shot weapon in her hands. The thing she was staring at happened to be a male, who's leg seemed to be gushing blood. The boy looked familiar, Rizza? Rizzo? Something like that. He was mumbling something while clutching his leg, each passing second the puddle on the ground increased in size. The boy wasn't going to survive.

Without saying anything, Reiko walked over to the injured boy on the ground, who made a feeble attempt to move away. It didn't amount to much, after all it was hard to move with one useless leg and massive blood loss. It was almost sad seeing him struggle. She would be doing him a service if she put him out of his misery.

The moment that thought crossed the girl's mind, her hands were already moving, almost of their own accord. Gripping the pistol in both hands and taking a firm stance, she leveled the weapon at his head. The look on his face was almost pathetic, to the point where Reiko felt the need to say something comforting. "It's okay, you won't feel a thing." she said in the sweetest voice she could muster. With that, she placed her finger on the trigger and pulled.

Bang.

"Wh-what's going on...? I don't..."

She could hear that soft murmur.

So someone was nearby! And they heard her. So, they knew she was here, right? It wasn't as if she startled them, didn't she? Their voice seemed quiet, though... like talking was difficult. It came from the bush, didn't it?

And that's when it hit Carol.

She further approached the bush, and looked at the other side.

Carol could remember Rizzo Vitoria. She had heard rumors that he took things out of the dumpster on a regular basis, which she wasn't sure of but was supported by his ratty clothes he always wore. What was he doing though? He was on the ground... was he in pain?

She saw that he was bleeding from the leg.

"N-no..."

Did she do that? But... but... she didn't mean to! She was just being clumsy! Holy shit, she just wanted to see if who was there, and scare them off if they attacked them! She wasn't trying to kill him!

Carol quietly placed her gun on the ground, and stepped towards him, trembling.

"Are... are you okay? I mean, I didn't mean to- I was just-"

Reiko stepped beside her.

She began talking, saying things like "It's okay, you won't feel a thing." It reminded Carol of how someone would talk to a dying pet, in a way. Something about the tone was both comforting and unnerving at the same time.

A look towards her, and Carol's eyes widened.

She was pointing a gun at him.

No, she couldn't... she shouldn't... she mustn't...

"Reiko, don't- he might be able to-" Carol began. But a somewhat similar cracking noise interrupted her.

She quickly put her hands to her face, not wishing to see it. And soon after she fell to her knees.

Oh god, she didn't. She couldn't have.

Even without lifting her hands away, she knew what happened. Reiko had essentially mercy-killed him. No, she didn't. She couldn't do that. Right? He was alive, safe and sound... they'd bring him over to the Infirmary and patch him up, just like she had offered to Reiko-

She wasn't supposed to kill anymore. Carol was supposed to protect her. Just because she was injured and so she wouldn't have blood on her hands anymore. That's what friends did, right? They protected each other in times like this. That's why she had gone to investigate, so that she didn't have to worry. Reiko didn't need to do something like this. Rizzo could have made it out okay. They just needed to stop the blood flow and put bandages on it. It was simple. And now she- they- shot someone, it was going to be on the Announcement, and people would view Reiko as some sort of psycho-killer when she wasn't.

Carol burst into sobs, crying into her hands and sleeves.

"Reiko... what are we going to do- what are we- no... I think we-"

She couldn't get the next two words out, but she knew what they were. "Killed" and "him". She wasn't able to say it, going coming out in choked sobs. But she knew it. Oh, she knew it.

Reiko was her friend, this wasn't supposed to happen. They were supposed to escape with all their friends and bring Danya to justice. Nothing like this. She never expected this. This wasn't happening... no...

Rizzo began to shiver, a twitch making itself apparent in his arm. He WAS shot. But it didn't hurt... It just ached, like the rest of his body did. But why?

He looked up and saw a fuzzy shape approaching him.

"I think I was shot..." he muttered weakly just as his vision cleared on a single object. A gun.

He whimpered and pushed backwards with his good leg. She was going to shoot him again! Maybe shoot him... Dead!

"It's okay, you won't feel a thing."

"Please..." he whispered, his voice sounding hoarse and dry. The collar was particularly choking right now. He kept trying to back away, but he was going at a less-than-ideal pace. The gun raised - he couldn't even see his killer's face. What could he do to get out of this? Offer sexual services? Be a slave? A human shield?

He was always good at finding things for people. Things they need, they want... But he couldn't even find the words to beg now he was faced with a gun. What do killers want? To kill.

'Bang'

Rizzo didn't even feel the bullet hit. He was on the ground all of a sudden, a round of metal ammunition buried in the middle of his brain.

As blood and thought leaked away from him, he thought - why wasn't his life flashing before his eyes?

B107 - Rizzo Vitoria DECEASED

Reiko stood in place for a long while after pulling the trigger. Here eyes didn't leave the now dead body of Rizzo Vitoria, the gun still pointed in his direction. Blood pooled around his head, and his eyes stared back at her, almost in an accusing glare. They looked at her as if to say "I could have survived!why did you shoot me?" It took all of Reiko's willpower to pry her eyes away from the body, looking at the ground at her feet.

She did the right thing, didn't she? In normal circumstances he might have been able to survive, but that was when there were ambulances and doctors and nurses and stuff. Out here.... out here they were just a bunch of high school kids with no medical training. He was going to die anyway, Reiko just made sure he suffered less. She would want the same thing in that situation. It was just the right thing to do, like putting down an injured animal.

Reiko could hear Carol crying behind her. She didn't dare look at her friend. Carol wouldn't understand that it was the right thing to do. If she hadn't done it, then they would have just left him there to live his last futile moments in pain, or at the mercy of some other student, free to have their way with him. At least now... Now he was gone. Now he didn't have to worry about this horrid game. But Carol wouldn't understand. She would just see that Reiko had shot him.

"It had to be done." Reiko found herself saying, still staring at the ground. "He was going to die anyways, just like the rest of us. Saving his life would have been futile. He would have just been a burden."

"It had to be done. He was going to die anyways, just like the rest of us. Saving his life would have been futile. He would have just been a burden."

No... he couldn't have just died on them.

He had a future, didn't he? And friends. Everyone had someone who they cared about and who cared about them, right? She wasn't sure who Rizzo was friends with, but someone out there was looking for him, wondering where he was, crying for him. She was sure he had a family and friends. He had to.

And Reiko... Reiko didn't seem to believe that things were going to be okay. That Rizzo was only a burden. That they were all going to die. That it was necessary. But... they could have patched him up, they could have just stopped the blood flow, they could have just tended to him until they were rescued...

It was her fault. She was such a clumsy idiot with the gun that she had no idea what she was doing. And now Reiko thought he had to be put down. If she had just been more careful, this wouldn't have happened. Rizzo could have lived. Heck, Carol might have gotten to know him better and they could've become friends, and he could've helped them get out of here. He was just minding his own business, he didn't need to be shot by a clumsy idiot and then mercy-killed by said clumsy idiot's friend.

It wasn't fair.

She just wanted to go home. Meet her Nevadan friends again. Go to college. Become a chef like she always dreamed. Maybe start a family.

She had a life ahead of her. Every one of her classmates had a life ahead of them. It was being taken away by-

No. She shouldn't think like that. It was horrible. She wasn't going to die here.

"Reiko..." she gasped between sobs. "It's... it's not hopeless."

She lifted her hands away and stared up at her friend.

"We're NOT going to die here. We're going to be saved by the military, they know things. Everyone who died... Paige? Reika? Amber? Simon? They're not going to die in vain. That guy... he can't get away with this a fourth time. They have a bunch of information right now, right in the Whitehouse. Plus, there has to be a loophole somewhere, right? He seemed pretty confident.... and..."

She took a deep breath and more emotions and more tears began flowing.

"We're going to make it. Not everyone is going to die here. Reiko, we can find Jacob, Ben, and Sarah, and we can escape. Never look back. It's what I want. Reiko, it's not hopeless."

A few more choked sobs.

"You don't have to fight anymore. I know what happened with those people, I heard on the announcement. But you know what? You know what? I trust you. I did wonder at times whether or not you did it on purpose to be honest. But, this entire time... this entire time..."

She couldn't get the words out again. After another deep breath, she got them out.

"... I thought you were still good, deep down. You're my friend, right? I could never see you doing those things on purpose. But, you don't have to fight anymore. I made a promise to myself to keep you safe. You just have to trust me."

Carol continued staring up at her friend, who was still holding the gun she had only a minute ago shot Rizzo with.

"You can do that, right? Promise me we'll make it. Please? Both of us will make it, and so will Sarah, Jacob, and Ben if we just find them. You just have to have hope..."

Hope.

Hope was what was going to keep them alive.

Even after everything she went through- woke up on a beach with a gun, heard about the deaths of her friends, watched someone commit suicide, had to scare off someone who was threatening to blow up a friend, ran away from an attacker who seemingly killed her new friend, and accidentally shot someone so they had to be put down- she still had hope. Not as much as she did back at Bayview. But hope was still there.

She was going to make it. They were going to make it.

Her and Reiko.

All they needed was to trust each other.

Reiko didn't look at Carol as she gave her little speech. Talking about finding their friends and escaping and the army coming and being big heroes and saving them all. And where would that leave her? Reiko had killed five people, all of which was no doubt caught on camera. Even if they were saved, she would no doubt be institutionalized or jailed or shot on the spot or something. Of course, that wasn't going to happen anyways. Danya was too smart for that.

And her friends? Her so called friends who she hung out with at school? Well, Reiko didn't want to see any of them right now either. Ben only hung around with her to get laid, and well... he succeeded in that. Why he continued to hang around with her after that, she didn't know. Maybe he was hoping for another night alone or something. Not that it was ever going to happen. Jacob was only there because of Paige. Paige who was dead, dead along with her best friend Amber. Reiko didn't have any friends she could truly call by such a name.

What about Sarah?

Reiko clenched her empty hand as the thought of her girlfriend entered her mind. Poor, sweet Sarah. How heartbroken she must have been to hear precious little Reiko's name come up time and time again, having to hear the details about how her innocent little love was killing people. She probably gave up on her a long time ago, more intent on some sort of crackpot scheme to try and get herself out alive which would ultimately fail. Any feelings that she may have had for the little figure skater were probably long gone....

...Right?

"Carol..." Reiko said, still refusing to look at the girl who claimed to be her friend. "Things... things aren't going to work the way you want them to. No-one's coming to save us. Even if they did, I'm not coming home with you. They'll shoot me on sight. I've... I've done horrible things on this island." Reality bit, but she continued.

"You heard right? On the announcements. About Cyrille and Sally and what's his name and Raina? They all died because of me. Their blood is on my hands. I, I fought for my life, and I came out on top. That's what it's all about right? Survival of the Fittest. It's the name of the game. The strong survive and the weak die. And I'm not... I can't be weak."

Reiko finally turned and looked Carol in the eye. "I've always been strong. Ever since I was a kid, everyone counted me out. 'Oh look at Reiko, she's so small, she'll never be good at skating. There goes Reiko, she'll never get a boyfriend with that face.' On and on and on and on. They didn't think I heard them whispering but I did. I used those taunts, and they fueled me. I vowed that I would show everyone that I was better than them, and guess what? I did. Every single little prissy bitch, bitches like Sally Connelly, I proved to them that I was superior. This is no different." She stopped, trying to find what to say next.

"Look, Carol. You have to ask yourself." Reiko couldn't help but smirk slightly as she said the next line. "Do you want to die?"

No, that was... that was bullshit! Someone was going to save them! They were going to escape and get out of here!

Reiko... seriously believed this.

She seriously believed that if she wanted to live, she had to kill people.

This wasn't right.

Everything was going to be okay, right?

Any minute now the army will come in and do something, or one of her classmates would figure something out. And... and...

No. This stuff cannot seriously be coming out of her mouth.

This is no different."

No.

Why did she seriously believe this? It wasn't true. There was no need to prove to herself that she was "the fittest". That was what that guy thought was good! He was just some terrorist, sitting back and laughing about people getting killed! Those people weren't just nameless faces! She was only proving that to him, and not to anyone else!

She sat in stunned silence.

What was she supposed to do? What now? Reiko seriously, genuinely believed all this. What was there to do? Here Reiko was, telling not only Carol but herself lies. She was so wrapped up in the "kill or be killed" mentality that she didn't understand that escape was most likely possible and that she didn't have to defend herself so much.

She was delusional.

No, she couldn't describe Reiko as that.

The world wasn't as bad as Reiko made it out to be. Simon, Kari, and Rein... they didn't attack Carol on sight. Hermione and Rizzo didn't, either. Even when there was bad people there were good people, right? There wasn't a reason to let this sort of thing happen...

"Look, Carol. You have to ask yourself. Do you want to die?" Reiko continued.

Her eyes widened.

Was that a veiled threat?

But, she couldn't do that to her friend! Friends were supposed to protect each other and make sure they were safe and be nice to each other and work as a team! If anything they were supposed to at least stick around each other to make sure nobody attacks them! They shouldn't threaten each other! That wasn't right! It wasn't going to get anything done!

Carol said nothing, reaching for her gun still lying on the ground, and lifting herself to her feet. It would seem that even after that harsh lesson, she still wasn't paying attention to where she was pointing it, because for a few seconds it was pointed in Reiko's direction as she fumbled with it. She stared at the smaller girl for a few more seconds before finally speaking.

"You know, you're not as strong as you think you are. Sometimes you need help."

She turned, heading towards the direction of where they had been sitting previously.

"I'm... I'm just going to get our things and head on out."

And within a few seconds, she had arrived at where the bags laid, still waiting for them after all that. Carol stopped and stared at the one labelled "B072- SIMON GREY". She could remember him asking that they took it and Reiko grabbing it in the commotion. He... he trusted them, trusted them with his life. There was a reason why he said he was going to hold the attacker off. He thought that they were worth fighting for.

But, this wasn't what he would have wanted, was it?

The thing that hurt Carol the most, though, was the fact that even though she wouldn't admit it, Reiko was hurting. She seriously thought that she had to compete to live by killing everyone. She kind of bought into the game without realizing it. What she didn't know was such thoughts were hurting everyone which included herself.

Carol wasn't a stranger to feeling pressured and alone, to be honest. When she first got the news that she was moving all the way to Minnesota because of her parents' jobs she was a wreck. She remembered feeling homesick a lot once she actually made it there, and often worried that people were going to bully the new kid. And the fact that she had left everything she grew up with in her home town- her friends, extended family, her favorite hangouts. But, she made it out fine. However, she didn't make it alone. She had her friends back home, she had her family, and she, most importantly, made friends with Amber, Paige, Ben, Jacob, and yes, Reiko.

Reiko wasn't the only one who felt pressured and alone. Everyone felt alone, didn't they? It's just that doing this sort of thing hurt everyone, not only the people she killed- the person's loved ones, Reiko's loved ones, and Reiko herself. This wasn't a good way to do things. There had to be a solution, right?

And suddenly, Carol didn't want to leave Reiko.

Maybe they could actually indeed find everyone who would help them. Maybe they could find Rein and Kari. Maybe they could find Jacob, Ben, and Sarah. Maybe they would be like Simon; at first suspicious of her but still help her. Maybe they could actually find a way out.

Perhaps Carol could just simply follow her, not alerting her of her presence, but sneaking right behind jumping in whenever she got into trouble again. She didn't want to lose Reiko so soon after finding her, did she? Did she?

Placing the gun onto the ground again, she reached for the bag, her fingers slipping from the straps each time due to her shaking hands. Her face and eyes were still red from crying, and her features were streaked with tears.

She didn't know what to make of her life anymore. Carol just wished this sorted itself out.
