Camping Out

OPEN

The residential area used to house the miners, loggers, and mansion staff. Houses, mainly ranch-style and small, are arranged on one half of the U-shaped town. The other side of the U is home to a pub, a grocery store, a small convenience store, and a recreation center containing a gym and a small movie theater.

Camping Out

((Reiko Ishida continued from Serendipity))

Reiko Ishida found herself retracing her steps a bit too much recently. First she was in the mountains, and now back in the only place that looked even remotely civilized on this island. Hell, she'd even found the same house she had stayed in last time she was there. The small blue two-story house was nothing special to look at, which was perfect really. All this wandering around had begun to get tiring. Maybe it was time for her to just start camping out. Barring any dangerzones of course.

Entering the house, Reiko turned the deadbolt on the front door, locking it. Anyone who happened to be looking for shelter would hopefully just assume it was locked to begin with and move on. That or check the back door, which the girl left unlocked in case she needed a quick escape. The inside of the house was cozy enough, with a small kitchen, living room, and a few beds upstairs. Unfortunately most of the food in the kitchen had long since gone bad, but at least the place had running water.

Inside the bathroom on the second floor, Reiko washed her hands in the cold water running from the sink. She considered trying to wash her face, but decided against it. The swelling had already begun to go down on her face, which was good. Finishing in the washroom, the girl entered the room she had stayed the night in many nights before.

The last time she was here she'd made a tearful plea to her parents to stop watching. She wondered if they actually listened to her. Removing the pistol from her belt and placing it on the nightstand, Reiko sat down on the bed, opening her day pack. She removed the weapon from within, throwing the shoulder strap over herself. A few adjustments later and it was sitting comfortably on her body. Propping herself against the headboard, Reiko waited. She hoped no one would try to use the same house as her for protection, but if they did, she was ready.

She didn't know exactly how much time had passed since she had holed herself up in that house. Probably not more than an hour. Of course, when you spend an hour doing absolutely nothing, it starts to feel far longer than sixty minutes, and she was getting boreder with each moment. Finally, Reiko just couldn't take it anymore and got out of the bed. Surely there was something around here she could keep herself occupied with.

Searching the room she was in, she quickly surmised that it was where the parents of the house's family had slept. The closet was full of suits and dresses and other such things, the drawers various bits of clothing. None of it particularly fetching, and sadly nothing that helped alleviate her boredom. At least, that was until she checked under the mattress. Reiko almost had to laugh as she produced a pair of old Playboy magazines. She didn't think people actually did stuff like that, but, well, apparently she'd been wrong.

Sitting down on the bed, she began to flip through one of them, not particularly feeling anything from looking at the various topless models. She didn't really see the appeal, but then again she wasn't exactly the target demographic. Though maybe she was just spoiled because she had Sarah. Reiko was kind of wishing she had thought to bring some of the.... pictures that she'd let her take, but she hadn't exactly expected to end up stranded on an island of death. There hadn't seemed much point carrying around photos when she was meant to be spending the weekend camping with the object of her affections. Sighing, the girl sat back in her original position, doing that thing every man claimed they did, and read a few of the articles.

Even more time passed, and Reiko had already gone through the magazines she found. They actually had some interesting information, it was just a shame that she'd probably never get to use her new-found knowledge. After finishing those, she had searched the house for other items of interest, coming across a few books and other less risque magazines, which were now piled up on the bed beside her.

Reiko was never a big reader. She always spent her time outside or on the rink, only reading when she absolutely had to. Which isn't to say she didn't enjoy it, she just never had time to do it. Funny how it was now, at a time when she could die at any moment, that she was finally reading some of the 'classics'.

It was really interesting how many of them seemed to have themes of death or loss or some other concept that Reiko had never really considered. The thought of dying or losing loved ones had always been a distant concept that other people worried about. Of course, things were different now. Her sister was dead. All her friends were dead. Sarah would forever be out of her reach, even if she won. There was too many people out there who would want to see her dead if she survived, feeling that she didn't deserve the life she earned to live.

So why was she still fighting to stay alive? She didn't know. Maybe it was just her latent competitive spirit keeping her going. Maybe it was because she felt like she had something to return to. Her sister was dead, and she'd done some heinous things on that island, but her parents would still love her. Sarah would probably still love her, and even if she didn't at least Reiko could live with the fact that she was still alive. So she would fight to the end. Or die trying.

For now though? She had some Gatsby to read.

((Ericka Bradley continued from Failing to Reappear))

When she had been there, the town center had looked like a good area for a shootout at high-noon scenario, so that seemed to like it was a likely place for this to end. Which is why she needed to stay close to it, so she could get in early and find a good place to entrench herself until it was a good time to make a move and go home.

Since her thoughts were on the subject of fortifiable positions, Ericka decided that perhaps she should find someplace to hide until it was time to move again. And one house in particular stood out as a particularly good spot, indeed.

She walked up to the door and tried to open it. It wouldn't open. It took a few seconds of trying to force it open before she realized that it wasn't jammed, it was locked. Ericka figured that if the terrorists had come across a locked door they would've broken it down, so either they missed one, which was unlikely considering how comprehensive their camera coverage was, or someone was already hiding inside.

What to do? If Ericka tried to run and the person was the shoot-on-sight kind then she would have her back on the person while in the person's sights. If they were the paranoid type then just standing around here was likely to make them suspicious. If they were the manipulative sort then reveling herself further would be a bad idea.

There was only one thing she could think to do.

Reiko's eyes turned away from the book like a shot, placing it on the bed beside her. What sounded like a voice came from outside, and this was something she wasn't really expecting. I mean sure, she expected there to be other people looking for houses to hide in or something, but she wasn't expecting people to go to this exact house. Shuffling off the bed, Reiko grabbed her bag and the pistol from the end table.

Now she had one of a few options. She could return the call in kind, and hope that they wouldn't blow her head off. She could try to sneak out of the back, but there was a chance that they'd see her. Which again, had the issue of them being aggressive. And given her reputation, she was almost certain anyone who she met at this point would want to shoot her on sight. The last option was to hide in the house itself, and if the person turned out to be aggressive, then maybe she could ambush them.

The girl decided on the last one. It was he best option at this point. If the person outside decided to come in, then at least she would have something of an advantage. If not, that was fine by her as well. Opening the closet in the room, Reiko stepped into it, closing the door behind her but leaving it open a crack. She wanted to be able to see if someone was about to enter the room.

No response... maybe no one was there? Or maybe they were just as scared as she was. Worst case scenario would be an ambush... There was really only one thing to do, run. Run quickly and hope no one was waiting at the windows to gun people down. Go somewhere unexpected and hope they don't follow, or that if they do follow the path loses them.

Ericka scanned the area. It was a little to open for her tastes, but there wasn't much she could do about that. When she decide which direction to run she readied herself and sprinted until the house was out of sight.

Reiko wasn't sure how long she was in that closet, but by the time she dared to leave it the sun had started to set. Whoever had been outside hadn't entered the house, which was fine by her. She really doubted anyone else would try this house, and with the sun setting it seemed as good a time as any to get some rest.

Making her way back downstairs, the girl decided to lock the back door in addition to the already locked front. She figured the extra protection of a locked door outweighed the need for an escape route. Making her way back up the the room she had been occupying for the last little while, she cleared the bed of the various magazines and books. Making sure her weapons were close at hand, the girl crawled into the bed, pulling the covers over her and almost immediately falling asleep.

---

Reiko was woken up by the sound of the announcements, feeling refreshed from actually sleeping on a bed for the first time in a long time. Said announcements mentioned that there was very few of them left, which was simultaneously depressing and relieving. Many of her classmates had been killed in this sick game, but at the same the less people there were then the closer she was to going home.

Once the announcements were over, Reiko collected her things. As much as she wanted to stay where she was, the longer she stayed in one place the more likely it was someone would find her. With the town center reopened she figured that she might be able to find some useful items no one else had come across. Going back downstairs, Reiko unlocked the front door of the house, and after making sure no one was waiting to shoot her, took off in the direction of the town center.
