How I Spent My Suspension

The second floor of the castle is actually where the main entrance is located. A decorative drawbridge leads in to a pair of glass double doors. Just beyond the entrance, there is a prize counter full of all sorts of knick-knacks that people can take tickets they've won through the arcade games and turn them in for candy, plastic toys and the like, all the way up to large plushie dolls and even mp3 players. Next to the counter are a row of ticket-counting machines which can condense tickets into vouchers to be turned in to the employee at the counter. At the other side of the door, there are token machines which take money to dispense arcade tokens, which operate almost all indoor attractions except the bowling alley and the laser tag. This floor features a slew of arcade machines, including mainstays such as skeeball (which has a whole wall dedicated to it) and games of chance. There are also many standard arcade cabinets on this floor featuring the likes of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear (because SOMEBODY has to have it), MvC2... the list goes on.

How I Spent My Suspension

((Adonis Alba continued from Think Before You Act))

Adonis Alba was still irritated about his suspension.  It wasn't so much the suspension itself, oh no.  He'd been suspended before, and it never bugged him this much.  The problem was that he had been banned from prom.  He was a shoo-in for prom king!  He was gonna party hard and end the night in a motel room with his super-hot date.  But now none of that was going to happen, and he didn't like it.

He fed a token into the Skee-Ball machine and picked up one of the balls that were released.  Adonis liked Skee-Ball.  Hell, who didn't?  It was simple, yet difficult at the same time.  The difference between 100 points and 10 points was a little skill and a whole lotta luck.  Maybe a couple rounds would help him clear his head.  He rolled ball after ball up the ramp and watched his points go up.  He was aiming for the high score, but it would take a lot of good rolls to hit it.  He watched the last ball go up into the small pocket in the upper right of the board.

Hell yeah, 100 points.

He fed another token into the machine and got ready for another game.  He was going to get that high score if it took him all day.

((Sean Mulcahy continued from Cicada Nights))

Sean scoured the second floor of the castle after a long day of school. The castle was a traditional after-school stop of kids from all four classes of Aurora High, and it was a common sight to see each floor of the arcade packed with recognizable faces. Despite this, Sean found himself not coming here all too often; he showed up maybe once a month, tops. Today, however, he had a mission.

Earlier in the day, Sean had heard about some fighting game that featured a pirate as one of the playable characters. This was nothing remarkable in itself; he knew of Cervantes from Soul Calibur and just how much of a badass that guy was, but the idea just didn't seem quite as hilarious as some cute pirate chick beating people to death with an anchor. Sean was looking for that game today. Maybe he'd do a little bit of bowling or laser tag before going home, but the mission came first.

Heading around a corner of arcade machines set into the middle of the floor, Sean instinctively picked out a few familiar faces and took a few moments to attach a name to them. Alex was around here somewhere, most likely. The two of them had talked before school ended, and they were going to meet here to have themselves a bit of a fun time before the usual grind of homework. Who Sean wasn't expecting to see, however, was Alba.

As he often did in situations such as this one, Sean immediately turned to walk away and remove himself from the picture. He hadn't even fully rounded the first arcade cabinet, however, when he remembered that Alba had been suspended recently. News like that flew all over the school, especially when it involved a repeat offender like him. Both Kyran and Gray were involved in that whole mess, and somebody had been pushed over a table. That's what the rumors said, anyway. Alba had already been punished by the school, maybe, but he was messing with Sean's buddies, and that just wasn't okay. Somebody needed a little talking to.

So, Sean turned right back around and walked over to the skee-ball machines, clearing his throat before calling out to the boy. The much... much larger boy who was one of the best players on the football team before dropping off. The boy who was a known troublemaker and wasn't exactly afraid to get physical.

Sean suddenly realized this was a terrible idea.

((Genie Banneman continued from Circle of Fifths))

Genie bounced in glee as she watched her little piggy sail through the flock of birds uninterrupted.  She let out a little gasp of excitement as the wee pink piggy ricocheting off a middle-distance spaceship.  "Go go go," she chanted under her breath, still gripping the launching see-saw tightly.

Up and up the piggy sailed, a baffled expression on its little cartoony face.  Genie held her breath as one of the last spaceships zoomed past her skyrocketing piggy.  But the little pig held its course and careened into the mother ship.

Success!  The bonus jackpot was now hers!

She did a quick fist pump as the 'Pigs Might Fly' machine continued to belch out a string of tickets.  Okay, so it wasn't exactly the most digified game at The Castle, but Genie loved the 'Pigs Might Fly' game.  It required a little bit of skill with picking the launch angle and timing.  Plus, the whole slam-down-the-see-saw method of launching was a great way to let off a little steam.

And perhaps best of all, it seemed like only the anklebiters really liked the game.  So they came and did their best to peg the mother ship.  She had just watched a handful of the little goobers blow through their coins, hitting mostly the three and five ticket mid-level ships.  Each time they played, the mother ship bonus increased by two tickets.  On and on they played, building up Genie's ticket nest egg.  When their money was gone, they happily trotted off with a fist full of tickets and left her to play.

"Bless the anklebiters and their constant playing of this game.  It makes a great jackpot for people like me to collect," she murmured as the machine abruptly stopped dispensing tickets.

She frowned at the dispenser and looked up at the screen.  According to the readout, the game still owed her 42 more tickets.  "Hey, what gives?"  she loudly complained as she jabbed the coin return.

Genie banged on the cabinet with the palm of her hand.  "Piggy!  Give me my tickets," she demanded.  No more tickets were dispensed, and with a sigh, she gathered up her bounty and headed for the ticket counter.  She needed to tell an employee about the machine's malfunction.

As she approached the skee-ball area, she spotted Sean and someone who looked vaguely familiar.  "Hey Sean-bean," she called out, pronouncing his name so that it rhymed with bean.  Genie waved at them, her tickets flapping at the gesture.  "How goes?"

((Alex Ripley continued from Cicada Nights))

Well, where was Sean?

They were supposed to meet up, of course. They had decided to go to The Castle after school, and play some games. But she couldn't find him. Hmmm... where would she look if she were Sean? Perhaps a fighting game?

Wait, she had a phone on her, and presumably Sean had one. She pulled it out, only-

Huh. He was right in front of her anyways.

She put it back in her pocket. Well, there he was. Genie was running up to him as well. She knew Genie. They went to band together, and she played the trumpet. So yes, she knew her. She was notably dedicated to the trumpet, that she knew. Alex didn't know her that well, though. Did Sean and her know each other well?

Alex began to jog forward towards the two.

"Hey-"

And then she saw him, and stopped just nearby.

Alba.

Alba was one of the last people she wanted to see right now. People like Alba were just awful. Actually, "awful" might not be the right word. "Horrible"? No, needs to be something more extreme. After all, there were plenty of despicable things about him. He treated girls like they were just places for him to park his dick for the evening, he bullied people, he had poor teamwork skills, and the list went on. Therefore, it wasn't surprising that Alex would dislike him. Especially after what happened with Kyran.

God, she felt the urge to just run up and... well, for lack of a better phrasing? Bitch him out. Dear god, did she want to! She pictured herself getting right into his face and pinpointing every little thing wrong with him as a human being.

She stood in silence, a visible scowl on her face.

Well, Sean had called out to him, so they were probably going to have to deal with him.

((Sharon Elizabeth Austin: Start))

School can get tiring, everyone knows that. Sharon decided for today that she was going to take a trip to the Castle, alone. It wasn't that she didn't want to be with her friends anymore; she just wanted to have some alone time for a while. Was that too much to ask?

Not really having any specific purpose for being here except for having fun, Sharon had wandered into the arcade in an attempt to find something that would sate her boredom for the day. Her mind wandered back to the days in Scotland where she went with her friends to the arcade. Those were the days that she missed.

Looking around at the arcade, she tried to find something to do. Not really a fan of the fighting game herself, she decided to go for something more casual. There was Skee-ball and even though she wasn't the best thrower of balls in the world, she did find them fun to play. She walked over to the wall where she knew the Skee-ball machines were, wondering to herself why there was a wall dedicated to the game, but then again this is America. She learned not to question these things after a while.

As she approached the machines, she stopped herself when she saw Adonis Alba. That stupid prick. She had heard that he got suspended for starting a food fight or something like that and when she heard it, she was so incredibly happy. She wasn't scared of him, even when he did love to take time to bully her. No, she knew he was an idiot. She was better than him. But the sheer sight of him irritated her to no end and she found herself clenching her fists in an attempt to keep her emotions under control.

"Take deep breaths Sharon." She said quietly to herself, trying to take her father's advice and attempting calming herself down. She wasn't here to start a fight or get angry at Alba. No, she was here to relax. The presence of Alba didn't help though and her anger towards him was still burning intensely inside her.

She did notice the presence of other students in the area and Sharon was expecting this. The Castle was a common place to hang out with all it's attractions and such. One of the kids seemed to want to confront Alba, but why should she care? It wasn't any of her business.

Going to one of the machines, she put in a token for the machine and picked up the first ball. If Alba was preoccupied with that other student, then maybe he would get off her back and she could actually have a relaxing time here.

She threw her first ball down the ramp with intense force, not really aiming anywhere, her power coming from her anger at Alba. The ball ran quickly down the ramp and smashed against the back of the machine. The sound of the impact made Sharon shiver a little. She wasn't expecting that.

OK, only 90 more points and I'll have the top score.  I need another 100-pointer.

Adonis rolled his last ball up the ramp and watched it launch towards the 100-point goal, only to bounce off the side and roll all the way back down to 10 points.

Damn it.

Adonis had just begun to reach into his pocket to find another quarter when he heard someone call out to him.  He turned around to see none other than the weird pirate kid,  Sean Mulcahy.  Adonis really wasn't in the mood to be interrupted, and he cartainly didn't want to deal with any shrimps like Mulcahy.  That was supposed to be one of the advantages of suspension, not having to deal with little pests pissing you off.  Adonis decided that if this kid was going to call him out, then he was going to have to deal with him personally.

"What?  You got somethin' to say to me?"

Huh? That sounded like-

Sean was momentarily distracted from his current dealings by the voice of somebody familiar. Said familiar somebody was a good friend of his, Genie Banneman. Now, in situations such as this one, Sean's first instinct would be to drop whatever he was doing, run to Genie and give her a big hug as he did with most of his friends. The circumstances at hand slugged this with the nerf bat until he could only weakly wave and mouth 'hi' to her while trying to put on a genuine smile (which he was happy to see her, but happiness overall left much to be desired at the given moment).

He turned back to continue speaking to Alba only to learn that he had been most effective at getting the guy's attention. Sean looked up to see Alba looking back down at him. Dude was big, around six feet tall and much heavier built than Sean could ever hope to be. Sean's right foot stepped back and then planted, but he leaned forward so it didn't look like he had backed off that much. He wasn't going to run away from Alba right now, no matter how much common sense was telling him to beat it.

"Uh... yeah, actually..." Sean started, then immediately berated himself for sounding so weak. Damn it, this guy was pushing around his friends both figuratively and literally, he wouldn't let himself be pushed around too! "Yeah, you're the one that got in the fight with Kyran and Gray, right?" That was much more like it. Sean felt his backbone returning to him. "Not cool, dude. Seriously, what's your problem?"

Genie stopped in her tracks at the expression on Sean's face.  He looked...off.  Something about this wasn't really right. Concerned about her friend, she continued to approach but with much more caution.

What he said next confused her. Sean was confronting someone?  About the food fight at school?  Genie thought that was a weird thing to be upset about. Well, weird to be upset if you weren't one of the people who got busted for it.  Personally, she had found the whole thing kind of amusing.  No one *actually* had major food fights at school. Things like that only happened in tv shows and movies.

Wait a second, he said 'you're the one who fought with Kyran and Gray'.  There was only one person who fought with Kyran that day.  As she swung around to stand next to Sean, she realized that the person Sean was talking to was Adonis.

A momentary spark of fear ran down her spine as she looked up at the towering boy who was scowling at her and Sean.  He definitely didn't look happy to see them.  Well, really, he didn't look happy to see Sean but she was there now, so this was probably going to be a team effort.

Without thinking, she transferred her tickets to her left hand.  She reached out with her newly free right hand and clasped Sean's hand.  The familiar grip was comforting, although a little damp.  But that was to be expected when a person was standing up to the resident bully.  Although, she and Sean should be fairly safe since even Adonis wouldn't be crazy enough to hit people in public.

Well, she was pretty sure he wasn't that crazy.

Genie bumped her hip into Sean, trying to get his attention.  "His problem probably has a long, complex name that is difficult to pronounce," she muttered so softly she wasn't sure Sean could even hear her.

She continued in slightly louder voice. "He's already kicked out of prom.  Sending a salvo across his broadside in public is not our best plan, compadre."  She squeezed Sean's hand meaningfully while beaming sunnily at Adonis.

Alba raised his head in response, and he didn't look too happy. Oh boy. He wasn't saying anything "bad", but she knew of the chaos that was about to start. Alex could only watch from where she was standing. No one in the group seemed to notice her, or at least she thought. Alex could only frown as she examined Alba's face from her distance. The guy looked like an angry monster that had been woken up, or interrupted while feasting on some prey. Skeeballs weren't good prey, but still, the point remained.

Alba? Looked dangerous.

Alex tilted her head slightly to the side, as Sean called him out further. Of course, everyone knew what Alba's problem was. He felt like he had to demonstrate his masculinity to everyone, so he hit on girls and harassed pretty much everyone (not even the poor referee was safe!). Oh, and he had a godawful first name as well. No wonder he had to demonstrate his manliness. She wouldn't dare say that aloud, though.

She saw Genie gently gesturing towards Sean, as if trying to pull him away.

At that point, Alex decided to step forward.

"Sean, you know his problem", she gently hissed. "He feels like he has to show off how manly he is in the most overblown ways."

Okay, that wasn't a good way to say "hi". But still.

As Sharon continued to play Skee-ball, she couldn't help but overhear the conversation. Wow, seems like someone was actually standing up to Alba. That was odd. He was smaller than him plus he sounded weak. This kid was probably way over his head. Though she did admire his gusto, she felt that the kid was biting off more than he could chew. Alba probably wouldn't hesitate to completely demolish the boy and right now Sharon was wondering just how sane the other boy was.

She picked up her last ball and was about to throw it as 2 girls moved towards Alba and the kid. Though she recognized that they were school, she doubted that she knew them particularly well. She may have seen them in passing or something like that. Whoever they were, they seemed to be friends with the other kid as they moved closer to him.

Well at least the kid has a better prospect of surviving. She thought to herself as she turned her attention away from the game, focusing on the scene unfolding in front of her.

One of the girls seemed to want to get out of there, a smart move in Sharon's opinion. This can't happen here, in public. In school would be fine, but definitely not here. Causing a scene here would mean bringing disrespect to the school. It also made them look like a bunch of idiots. Sharon had to calm the issue down, even if it meant siding with Alba for a moment. The thought of doing so sent shivers down her spine, but she had to do this.

"The lass has a point there." Sharon called out as she made her way towards them, skee-ball still in her left hand. She looked calm and confident as she walked towards them, even though she was smaller than all of them.

"Alba's already been suspended from school as well as prom. Though we all know he is a massive dick, it still doesn't justify confronting him in a place like this, where we're supposed to have fun. Just leave him alone and maybe he'll be less of a dick when he comes back." Sharon continued to say as she finally approached the group, standing in between Alba and the kid.

Though I doubt that would happen. She added mentally, not saying it in risk of sparking a fight. Then again she did call Alba a dick. She really should of considered her choice of words next time. She hoped that something bad didn't happen. She didn't want to have to misuse a skee-ball anytime soon.

Well, Sean was mad at Adonis about the fight in the cafeteria.  Great, just when he was starting to get over it, someone had to come up and remind him of it.  Still, Adonis had to give Sean props for having the balls to come out and tell him off instead of hiding like a wimp.  If Adonis were in his situation, he probably would have done the same thing.

What Adonis didn't appreciate, though, was the fact that a small army of girls was beginning to surround Sean.  The last thing that Adonis needed right now was even more people telling him how awful he apparently was.  He wasn't too familiar with most of the girls, but there was one in the group that he was all too familiar with.  That was Alex Ripley, Miss Bully-Hunter herself.  She was always getting in his hair whenever he was having a little fun screwing with people, and of all people to be on his back right now, she had to be one of them.

Great.  Just freaking fantastic.

Adonis looked at the group of students confronting him.  "Look, I know you're pissed and all, but I really don't wanna have to deal with this shit right now.  I just wanna play some skee-ball and forget all this crap, so can you just do me a favor and get off my back?"

The mood and gravity of the situation had flip-flopped about three separate times, leaving Sean in a real bind as to how to feel about things. First, both Genie and Alex had come to his aid, and by then it looked like Alba wasn't really keen on messing with the two girls, both of whom Sean had to admit were tougher than him.

Then along came Sharon, a girl with striking red hair which tended to make her stand out even among other gingers. With his own bit of Irish heritage, Sean had learned to draw connotations between 'red hair' and 'hot temper', and it looked like Sharon wasn't going to disappoint. She had to have called Alba a dick at least three times in that little speech of hers. Each instance left Sean looking between Alba worriedly and Sharon with something of an incredulous stare that said 'are you even trying to help?'

Sean felt his back tighten as he braced for Alba's response...

Which was pretty reasonable, actually! Particularly when considering the scathing remarks given by Sharon.

The smaller boy was left at a loss of words for a moment, not expecting somebody with such a reputation for bringing violence to the table (literally, as it just so happened) to ask for a quick and peaceful resolution to a given situation.

"Well, uh..." Sean looked to Alex, then back to Alba as he gave a quick squeeze of Genie's hand. "Just... just as long as you know that we didn't take too kind to it. We'll lay off if you do, I guess."

Genie could only stare at Sharon in horrified silence.  What on Earth was she thinking?  Why was she getting involved in this?  It had nothing to do with her.  Even more to the point, on what planet was it a good idea to loudly and repeatedly call the guy who was suspended for fighting a dick?  Maybe in England or wherever she was from doing that was a good idea. She was holding on to that skee-ball pretty menacingly.  Was she looking for a fight?

'Wow, way to throw the rest of us under the bus,' she silently grumbled.  Genie opened her mouth to say something, realized that calling Sharon out would probably escalate things which wouldn't do anyone any good, and abruptly closed her mouth as Alex arrived.

'Well, hey.  At least there's more back-up to scream for help if fists start flying,' she thought as she dipped her head in greeting at the other girl.

Things took a really unexpected turn when Adonis didn't flip out.  In fact, he was pretty reasonable about this whole thing, all things considered.  He did have a point that he was minding his own business when Sean confronted him.  She flashed Sean a sheepish expression and shrugged slightly as he squeezed her hand back.

Crisis averted!  They really should let Adonis get back to his game and address the other pressing issue at hand. Still holding Sean's hand, she pointed at the prize counter. "Hey, you want to come with me to the counter?  The piggy game ate my tickets.  I was on my way over there when I spotted you.  I'll even split them with you and Alex."

And suddenly, Sharon Austin out of nowhere.

Alex knew Sharon. She was in the Book Club. She was short with red hair. And most importantly of all, boy, did she have a temper. Of course, Alex herself did occasionally did have a temper, that she knew. But Sharon was pretty well-known for being rather... temperamental, for lack of a better word. Alex, of course, knew about her outbursts. It wasn't a secret, really.

That said, she couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

Was she seriously defending Alba? Really? Saying they should back off? Well, to be honest, she did have a point that Alba might have already learnt his lesson. Though, he apparently didn't learn after getting kicked off a sports team. You'd think he'd learn his lesson after that point. But apparently not. If he did, he wouldn't have tossed one of her friends onto a table. Maybe it took getting punished twice. But really, you could never tell with Alba.

What did surprise her, though, was the fact that Alba was... surprisingly reasonable. That was new. Perhaps he did learn his lesson. Or perhaps there were four people right in front of him, meaning he was outnumbered. Maybe. She had no clue. Either way, that was an unusual reaction.

Sean mumbled out a response, and Alex felt like she needed to add on.

"Sharon, we appreciate the effort, but please step back."

She turned to Alba.

"As for you..."

Deep breath.

"I'd leave you alone, I'm okay with that. But you know, it's kind of a stupid move, getting into fights with your old team mates. What were you trying to do? Whatever it was, it wasn't worth getting suspended. Trust me."

Alex crossed her arms.

"But you're taking it pretty okay-ish, right? So... I guess we'll be off."

She looked towards Sean and Genie. Well, that was that, she guessed. For now? Maybe. She wasn't sure if Alba was going to do something overblown once again, or if Sharon was going to toss that skeeball at someone if he did. She had no clue if that sort of thing would happen. There was that possibility, though.

Judging from the looks of utter shock on the other kids' faces, it would seem as if Sharon killed a puppy or something. What was wrong with defending Alba in a situation like this? An idiot he may be, but no one deserves to be confronted like this after the punishment he was given. He couldn't even go to prom, which must've really sucked for him. Sharon had no idea what she was going to do for prom. She even considered not even going at all. The prom scene really wasn't her thing. She had better things to do anyways.

She was surprised and relieved by the fact that Alba didn't flip his shit which was a nice change. Maybe Sharon was right in that Alba had changed for the good. Then again, she realized this was Alba they were talking about. Sharon doubted he had changed that much.

It was then that one of the girls told her to step back. As she took a step away from the little crowd they had formed, she recognized the girl in front of her. Alex Ripley, famous throughout school for being the "Bully Hunter". While she did think it was admirable, Sharon always did wander about why she bothered protecting people who were bullied. What was her justification for doing so? It was something that she always wanted to ask her.

Then again, Alex was just plain weird. She had this thing about wearing the most ridiculous accessories possible while still keeping within the rules of the school. Sharon didn't understand that about her at all but then again, she didn't understand anything about her. She remembered the time that Alex wore motorcycle goggles like a headband which just looked really stupid and was really distracting. Luckily, the teachers sprung into action and made Alex take off those ridiculous goggles while in a school. In her honest opinion, that was one of the better decisions the school made.

"Oi! You're Alex, right?" Sharon called out, wanting to make sure that her assumptions were correct. She basically ignored the other two students that were with her. She guessed that they were her friends or something. Begrudgingly, she realized they were all taller than she was. Everyone was taller than her. It was one of the things that annoyed her to no end. She looked forward to the day when she could find someone her age that was shorter than her, but she felt that this would probably be impossible. Sharon was gifted by her parents with the gift of shortness. It wasn't a gift she particularly liked, but she had to live with it.

"I've got a question for you. Why'd you go and protect people from the bullies that inhabit our school. Though I'm not saying that people who do bully don't deserve it, I'm just curious." Sharon asked, playing with the skee-ball in her hand as she threw it up and down. Her right hand was in her pocket as she approached them. An intrigued look was on her face and she wondered how the girl would reply. She did have an interest in people, but only when they weren't pissing her off. Hopefully, Alex wouldn't make that mistake.
