Time is a treason || Private

Deeper into the second floor, the Intensive Care Wards can be found. These rooms were used to house patients who were deemed to require more concentrated and in-depth care than the low-risk patients, but who weren't considered a serious risk to themselves or others. Still, to prevent any chance of injury, a metal cot topped with a mattress is the only furniture in each room and bars block direct access to the windows. The rooms themselves showing varying signs of the patients that once lived within them. One in particular has scratch marks up and down the walls.

((They had all been eager to leave the roof behind.))

Unfortunately, the room they ended up in wasn't much better. Asha sighed, staring at the barred windows. The only bed was currently occupied by Jae, with Dot doing her best to sleep on the floor nearby. They had agreed that the bed would be used by the person who had the next turn at watch, in hopes that the extra rest would help them stay alert during their shift.

After their morning of forcing Jae to march up and down stairs, the three of them had spent their time wandering around the asylum; not wanting to be caught outside if another downpour started. Asha could still appreciate the building as a setting, but its confined hallways, sometimes littered with dead bodies, had quickly robbed it of the luster she had felt that first day; admiring it from the safe distance of the chain-link fences.

The atmosphere was subdued, or at least as much as it could be with Dot around. Jae especially had been quiet. Asha didn't pry. Henry had been her friend, of course, but nowhere near as close as he had been with Jae. They still hadn't found any more of their friends, or even Brendan; though at this point Asha wasn't sure how many of them were even still alive.

As she sat in vigil, taser in her lap and Dot's knife by her side, Asha spent some time going over everyone she knew, a melancholic list of the dead and dying. If only she'd a black notebook and quill pen to officially keep track. Would it give a sense of closure, to write down the names of people she'd never see again in this life? Accompanied by a memory or an informal obituary? Maybe. She'd never been the diary type, though. Prolonged introspection was for nerds.

Nathan was safe at home. Lucky jerk. It was a shame they'd never get to perform their final recital together.

Dot and Jae were with her, obviously.

Danny and Henry were dead. Iz was worse than dead, but she'd never been much of a friend, anyways.

Who was still out there, then? Bridgette and Ty. Probably a bunch of other people that Asha liked and would miss when they were gone, but evidently not enough to bring their faces to the forefront of her mind. She felt strangely guilty about that; even though it was only natural that not everyone could be her best friend. Was it wrong to selfishly mourn more for the people she had spent the most time around?

Come to think of it, hadn't that been where Dot had fallen in her mind, before they had woken up on the island together? Undoubtedly a friend, but one of many. Passing smiles and hugs, but no evenings staying up until 3AM together talking about how it'd be totally rad if the stars were actually the eyes of some cosmic horror. If she'd been asked who among her friends she'd ride shotgun with in some cliched apocalypse, Dot probably wouldn't have even been made the top five. It was a really shitty thing to think, but it was true.

Now? Asha would die for her. Funny how that worked. People were always more wonderfully complex than you thought at first, far deeper than any first impression or passing glance could convey. She idly wondered what would have been different if she had woken up elsewhere, found another friend to cling and be clung to. She wondered if Dot would still be alive, if that had happened.

Goddammit. Introspection. It had a way of creeping up on you during the late hours of the night, didn't it? AM thoughts slithering into your brain while you're trying to not sleep. Asha supposed that having time to think was better than the alternative, at least. Unlike the chapel, they'd had a hard time finding enough solid debris to fully barricade the door; especially given how late it had been when they finally decided to give up on finding a better place for the night. The room was depressing, but at least it was warm-ish and dry and didn't have a corpse in it, unlike some of the other wards they had explored. Poor Scarlet.

Time passed slowly, with no hands to guide it. Dot snored. Asha idly passed her taser from hand to hand, staring at the door. They'd be relying on seclusion to protect them, tonight.

Back in the asylum once again.

((Isabel Ramirez continued from Megalomania))

The intensive care wards were gloomy, and dim. Only some of the pale moonlight making its way through the thick windows dotted around the hallways.

The day had been uneventful travel between areas, not a single soul encountered along the way, presumably because nobody wanted to come near her. Lily stayed close, but didn't say nearly anything at all throughout the entire day. Only paltry single or double word answers to her various questions and attempts to break the ice. She thought that maybe Lily would eventually open up, given that she agreed to the whole plan in the first place and actually stuck around when she could have easily run away. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and Isabel was left feeling even more isolated than she felt before.

Eventually, the infrequent showers of the day ruined the bandages she had wrapped around her face, and even though she no longer needed them, she decided that the two of them needed to seek shelter.

So here they were, haunting the festering hallways of the asylum once again. They came to a corner, around which would eventually lead to the place where she had killed Conrad. Returning to the scene of the crime, as it were.

Scanning the hallway around the corner for threats, Isabel gave an all clear signal to Lily before advancing further down the hallway, glancing in room after room that they passed, making sure that nobody could potentially get the drop on them.

Then, a sound came from one of the rooms further ahead. Something hitting the floor. In a normal hospital, a sound like that wouldn't be heard over the sounds of chattering and the clacking of keyboards, but in the dead hallways of the asylum, a sound like that was all too deafening.

Approaching the doorway that the sound had come out of, Isabel signaled for Lily to stop and wait before readying her sword. More competition to eliminate. Preferably quickly, and quietly. No need to draw things out, just dispose of them and move along. The door handle turned slowly, before Isabel creaked the door open and came face to face with the last person she wanted to see again.

Asha.

An awkward silence and stunned glances were shared between the two of them, before Isabel quickly shut the door behind her and pressed her back up against it.

"Shit."

((Lily Caldwell continued from Megalomania.))

The day had been damp, awkward and just plain uncomfortable. Lily responded to Isabel as little as possible. She didn't know if she could do anything else without saying what she was really thinking. Lily had never been much of a talker, anyway. She preferred to listen.

Even if listening to Isabel was like being stabbed metaphorically in the ears. It was just that the alternative was being stabbed literally in her ears and any other number of organs and/or orifices. Probably completed with some kind of skinning, judging by Conrad's body. Maybe she should have taken the throat cut.

Isabel stopped at a door. There had been a noise. Lily took a step back. She waited, and hoped it was someone she didn't know.

She didn't see who it was, because Isabel closed the door too fast and swore. That was, in its own way, much more chilling than Isabel charging in. For Isabel, homicidal monster, to see something and say 'shit,' it had to be bad.

"...They have a gun?" Lily guessed hesitantly.

All it had taken was a moment's distraction as Asha occupied her hands with mindless motion, fiddling with the taser while trying to think of how she would have wanted to end her webcomic, if she had gotten the chance to neatly tie everything up with a black ribbon. Maybe let everyone live, for once; scarred but ultimately whole. As she contemplated the finer details, her fingers slipped and the taser clattered to the cold concrete floor.

She heard footsteps approach. Slow. Halt just outside. She slowly moved to pick the taser up again, scarcely breathing, wanting to be prepared for anything but not wanting to betray her presence any further. The door crept open, just long enough for Asha to see the intruder's face.

Isabel.

The way she immediately closed the door again kinda ruined the mood she had been building up, but Asha couldn't have said it any better herself - shit. Iz's reaction would have been hilarious if it had been coming from literally anyone other than her. Like, freaking Jason would have been a more welcome sight, dumb cash cow hockey mask and all.

Surprisingly enough, Asha could hear a second girl out in the hall, talking to Iz. Judging by the way she wasn't screaming and pleading for her life, it seemed like Iz had found a murder buddy. Good for her. For lack of anything else to do, Asha hesitantly knocked on the door. Shave and a haircut. Free of charge with any order of decapitation.

"No it's just... a friend that I'm not happy to see-"

Isabel jarred away from the door as the sound of knocking echoed through the halls. She sighed, and realized that there was not going to be any easy way out of all this. She turned to Lily, motioning for her to get closer, before whispering a little bit away from her. "Open the door and then stay behind it. There's no way this isn't going to get violent, but I'm going to try and talk her down anyway. Hide and you should be safe."

She didn't want to kill Asha, not really. Even though their last meeting ending with threats being exchanged, deep down she still considered Asha a friend. The only reason she threatened her like she did was because she was angry, and she wanted to scare Asha away so she didn't have to think about her anymore. It was hard to legitimately throw away that many years of time spent together after ballet recitals over just one disagreement. Even if Isabel didn't really care about how Asha felt about the whole situation, she was still more valuable to Isabel as an ally than a corpse.

Still... Asha didn't know all of that. All she knew is that Isabel threatened to kill her before leaving. Why would she knock on the door, as if trying to goad Isabel into opening it again? Certainly Asha didn't want to have a fight on her hands. Unless...

Danny.

Right, the announcements didn't describe what really happened. That he tried to take one of her weapons, threatened her life, forced her to act when she would have much rather kept him alive. Of course Asha doesn't know what actually happened. She probably thought that Isabel wanted to kill him rather than being forced to. That's why she was knocking.

But maybe she was still willing to talk things out. Asha wasn't the type to just run in guns blazing. Isabel was certain that she would try to talk to her, at least a little bit, so long as Isabel herself didn't immediately go for the violent option. Maybe they would be able to resolve this without the need for violence. They could just go their separate ways and leave all this behind them,

Part of Isabel knew that wasn't going to be the case as Lily opened the door.

Haha, wow did Iz sound uncomfortable; even muffled as she was through the door. Asha supposed that saying 'the last time I saw this girl I told her I would slowly and painfully kill both her and her little Dot, too' would make her sound bad, wouldn't it? Asha hoped that she was only lying to save face and didn't actually believe her own bullshit, 'cause if Iz still legitimately considered her a friend she might just have to throw up from disgust.

Asha waited, taser resting in her lap, knife quickly shifted out of sight. She glanced over her shoulder to confirm that Jae and Dot were still asleep. Good. If Jae had been awake and ready to shoot, well, Asha would have shaken her head and gone 'maybe that wasn't the best thing to do' but she certainly wouldn't have lost any sleep over it. There was something she needed to hear, though; and this could be her only opportunity. If it meant giving Iz a stage, so be it; but Asha sure as hell wasn't gonna give her any excuses to play the victim.

When Iz opened the door, she would see Asha quietly sitting, cross-legged, a forced smile on her face. She tilted her head.

"Why'd you kill Danny?"

No useless preamble. No pretense that time had healed any wounds.

Figures.

Asha always did cut right to the chase. "I thought you would ask that," Isabel began, choosing her words as carefully as she could manage. "Believe it or not, it was self defense. Maybe you won't believe me when I say that, but it's true."

Isabel looked at the faintly lit ground before turning her head back up towards Asha. "Originally I wanted to group up with him, strength in numbers and all that, sorta like how I wanted to group up with you." Isabel could not hide the disdain in her voice during the last bits of that sentence. "Then, for some reason, he decided I was too dangerous to keep around... despite knowing each other for years..." Legitimate hurt was evident in her voice. "...Despite knowing each other for years, he tried to grab my halberd away from me. And then in a panic, I stabbed him. He died."

"That enough of an explanation for you?" Isabel grumbled. "Part of me doesn't expect you to believe me no matter what I say."

Isabel stood, awkwardly, almost in complete disbelief.

"You..." Isabel began. "...Alright."

Isabel signaled to Lily to come out from behind the door. "We're going, Lily."

She started moving back down the hallway, Lily keeping near the wall a few feet behind. She was glad that was over so quickly and easily. She didn't want another fight on her hands, especially not after the disastrous fight with Kimiko the day before. The last thing she needed was to get a taser used on her by a former friend. Now it was time to just get to some place safe and hole up for the night.

((Isabel Ramirez continued else-

Suddenly, Isabel felt something hit her back, before pain erupted throughout her entire body. She hit the ground with a thud, the sickle and her sword clattering against the ground noisily, the halberd and her bag jostled into an odd and uncomfortable position. Her whole body felt like it was on fire, her heart racing, adrenaline flooding her system. Isabel screamed in agony. She could barely think, unable to muster up any coherent thought except for one.

Asha had betrayed her again.

"Let me be clear with you. I'm going to win this. Even if I have to personally kill every single other person on this island."

Poor, innocent Isabel. Asha couldn't think of a single possible reason that Danny would feel threatened by a girl who had said that just hours before she wound up killing him. A girl who had been fucking disappointed that she hadn't made the monsters happy enough to deserve a "best kill" award.

Why had he been trying to get that halberd away from you, Iz? It couldn't have been your fault at all, right? You hadn't been threatening with him or anything, not at all. Who would have guessed that Danny fucking Brooks had secretly been a bloodthirsty, paranoid wreck this entire time? What else would cause him to decide that maybe you and pointy objects weren't a winning combination? It was just an accident that he ran into the blade you'd been pointing at his heart. Several times. What a clumsy, clumsy boy.

Oh, Asha remembered Danya's informal obituary for Danny in full crime-scene clarity. How could she ever forget being informed that one of her best friends had been stabbed quote-and-quote a lot, repeated for emphasis? Sure, Danya was a murderous bastard; but if he was a liar, the whole premise behind his lovely game would be ruined from the start.

In the end, Asha was willing to believe that Iz hadn't originally intended to kill Danny. Hell, she was even willing to believe that the first stab had been an accident. None of that justified the blows that followed it. "In for a penny, in for a pound" didn't exactly apply when you were talking about the number of new holes you were violently introducing to another human's body.

Even then, Asha would have been willing to believe that Iz had enough humanity left in her to genuinely regret the murder. Sadly, the fact that she blatantly lied about it made it pretty clear that any regret she felt was only that it made things awkward when she ran into someone who might actually be a threat to her. Asha knew that if she had been empty-handed, she and her friends would be having a pretty bad case of the dead right then.

And even then, while she was trying to convince Asha that she deserved any scrap of sympathy, she still miraculously found the time to throw in a little bit of guilt-tripping, too. "Oh, you would never believe me, and I can't see any possible reason for that except you having some inexplicable grudge against me."

Oh, how she hated serial killer tears.

After she dismissed Iz, she turned around to look at Dot's sleeping, peaceful face; absentmindedly hoping she wasn't having another nightmare. Asha knew she wasn't going to be around forever. She knew that sooner or later, one of the many murderers she fearlessly smiled at would take a bite out of her.

Asha knew that Iz could hold one hell of a grudge, even against the dead. She knew how she had looked at Dot, the first time they met. She knew there was an easy way to make the island a safer place for Dot, if only just a little. A safer place for anyone on the island who didn't deserve their last moments to be filled with agonizing pain and a Cheshire grin.

She knew that she couldn't think too hard about what she was doing. It'd be over with soon. No reason to bother the others.

Out into the hallway, then. Quietly. Taser in one hand. Knife in the other. Tiptoe towards the monster. Thank ballet for keeping you light on your feet. Shoot her in the back. As she falls, throw your now-useless taser at her friend, to keep her off your back for a few seconds. Feel a bit bad about it, but know that any concern is misplaced for someone who willingly traveled with Iz. Kneel down over her seizing body. Hold your knife firmly with both hands. Plunge it down into her brain over and over over again to make sure that it'd be over with quickly, to make sure that there would be nothing left that could feel, to make sure that it'd be quick, to make sure that she was better than Isabel, even when she was murdering-

Asha's shaking hands froze, unbloodied knife still hovering over Iz's head.

What the fuck was she doing?

The sword and sickle were on the ground.

Lily could take them. One of them. Finish the job she should have completed last night. Make up for what she'd let happen. Just in case this girl, Asha, couldn't do it herself. She was in a good position for it.

But Isabel had just said what happened to the last person who touched her weapons.

So Lily moved back, pressing her back to the wall and trying to hide as best she could in an empty hallway. She watched. She waited to see if Asha could do what four—five, if Lily counted herself—other people couldn't. She hoped Asha could. But she could see from how the knife froze that Asha didn't have it in her.

So despite the inherent stupidity in such a thing, Lily shut her eyes, covered her ears and did her best to block out what she knew would come.

((Min-jae Parker continued from I swear I'm not a jumper.))

Noise.

Jae's dreams were gray-washed and muffled, but noise was seeping in from somewhere. Voices. Asha. Somebody else?

He half-woke, turning over in the bed to slur out a question towards the place where Asha had been sitting.

She wasn't there.

"Asha?"

Jae sat looking at the open door in dull confusion for several moments, brain still trying to claw its way to full consciousness so he could work out what exactly was wrong with this picture.

The scream yanked him into reality. Asha gone, door open, someone in the hallway screaming-

Jae jolted out of the bed and grabbed the crossbow from where it was leaning against his bag, swearing loudly as he stumbled over Dorothy as she started to stir on the floor on his way to the hall.

"Asha!?"

((Dorothy arrived from somewhere she'd rather not think about.))

It was a first.

For once, she wasn't having a nightmare or a weird dream. Her mind was somewhere peaceful, somewhere were there was no hurt and no evil. She was on a cloud looking at a city from above, the building's lights lit up the scenery, making it festive and beautiful as the snow twirled around them and spreading the snowflakes around on the ants below her.

Is that how it felt to be flying? To be free? Was it how the birds saw her as she trecked around the island with her friends, meeting corpses and killers? She wish she could grow wings and fly far away, somewhere safe and somewhere peaceful. She wasn't blessed with that genetic abnormality, however. If she did though, chances are her parents would have her put down or something. Evolution was a weird thing but she enjoyed it, always made her think of funky stuff that could happen.

If she were to make it out, would her babies grow anti-collar neck? Would they grow something to defend themselves if they were put there like their mother? That'd be super, super weird, and really cool.

A sharp pain from her rib cage stirred the clouds away, making her fall straight to the ground. The haze around her slowly left her body and she was able to open her eyes. She was still where she was sleeping, somewhere that wasn't safe nor peaceful. She took control of her body when her survival instinct stroke her.

First, the pain. It was from her rib cage. It didn't feel like it was broken or pierced. It wasn't bleeding either. Now the source, she saw a shadow crawling away from her. From the sound it made and how it moved, it was either Jae and his leg or if Asha hid an injury. The latter wasn't really a possibility. She maybe was a bit nihilistic but not a machoschist.

She helped herself up, using the bed beside her as a prop. She heard Jae screaming Asha's name. Oh no.

Oh no, oh no, oh no, ohno ohno oh no o h n o o h n o o h n o o h n o o h n o ohnoohnoohnohnoohnoohnoo

It wasn't happening, whatever happened, it wasn't happening. She must have tripped on something or slipped or something dumb and benigh. Dot had to be sure she was fine, and she was fine. She was okay, she couldn't be hurt. It won't happen before Dorothy died. When she'd die, Asha could die. Dorothy needed her, she needed her alive and well. She needed her, she needed her support, she needed her love, she needed her friendship, she needed her help, she needed everything she was.

If she were to die, what would happen to Dorothy?

Nothing. She'd be nothing. She'd be hollow, worthless, ugly, disgusting, trash, lonely, everything that made her worthless and stupid and dumb. She needed her alive, she needed her friend. Asha couldn't leave her like that. Dot would die before then Asha would die so like that, they'd both be fine together.

So it was a relief when she saw Asha, alive, crouching over something.

Alive and fine.

Then why everything felt so wrong? So horribly, disgustingly wrong?

A moment of clarity.

The searing pain stopped after what felt like an eternity, only to be replaced by aching muscles and a weight on Isabel's back. It was almost certainly Asha, trying to... wrestle her? Get the final blow? She didn't know, all she did know is that she had an annoyance to eliminate.

Isabel forced herself upwards with all the might of her arms and legs, relieving the weight on her back. Scrambling to her feet, Isabel's bag and halberd fell to the floor next to her as she made sense of the situation she had been thrown into. Lily was cowering. Someone else was shouting Asha's name. Her sword was too far away to immediately reach. The halberd was too entangled with her bag to use. The sickle was sitting next to Asha.

Most importantly, Asha was still on the ground, trying to get up.

Isabel ran over and kicked Asha full force in the side of her head, returning her to her prone position.

"I was just going to leave, you know. You didn't have to do this." Isabel reached down and took hold of a handful of Asha's hair, yanking the girl up and backward. "Honestly, I never even thought I would see you again. I didn't want to kill you, I just wanted to keep you away."

She slammed Asha's head into the hallway wall. "Deep down, even after our last meeting, I still thought you were a friend."

Isabel reached down and grabbed the handle of the sickle with an iron grip, full of rage, her hand still pressing Asha's face to the wall. "...But I guess we never really were friends, huh?"

She readied the sickle for the finishing blow, Asha's face contorted in pain. "Now you're just another mistake that I have to correct."

By the time Asha realized that Iz was starting to recover from her terrible shock, it was too late. She was taken by surprise as Iz forced her back, caching a punch to the gut for good measure. She caught a glimpse of Jae as she was knocked back off of Iz, onto the floor; thought she heard him scream her name. Quickly got distracted by the stars in her eyes and the ringing in her ears as Iz kicked her.

She should have remembered that she had made her decision as soon as she had left the safety of their room - her head slammed against the wall, replacing split-second thought with a stunned nausea - oh, how she had fucked up - words words words, even now words, a constant vomitous stream of malice as soon as Iz had gotten the upper hand, as if she didn't even realize that she'd be dead right now if Asha had been like her - face rubbed against the rough wall, teary eyes blurring - Dot would be next - this halfassed amputation of a humanoid cancer hadn't helped anyone -

Asha's fingers were still curled tightly around the knife. Early-onset rigor mortis, probably. One last chance to still make things right. Iz hadn't noticed. Probably too wrapped up in her monologue. Arrogant to the end. It had given Asha enough time to recover just a bit, just enough to make one last effort to break free -

With a sudden burst of strength, Asha broke out of Iz's grasp. Blindly slashed upwards as she forced herself to her feet, getting a bit of distance between them. Still unsteady on her feet, she held her now-bloodied knife at the ready and watched for Iz's next move. Her breaths were heavy with adrenaline and pain and no small amount of fear. She said nothing. The time for irreverent quips had long passed.
