What A Rush

G036 start

Along the northern edge of the living site, a small strip of stores run side by side. The strip includes a convenience and grocery store, a pub, and a small gym. Each of these is still partially stocked with necessary products and equipment, and because of the effort that went into their construction, they all look fairly presentable. There is a parking lot off to the side, directly adjacent to the convenience store.

((Alice Gilman: Continued from Where the Fuck is Here?))

Travelling to the power plant was easier said than done.

It'd been a long walk from the hospital. The most direct route cut straight through the forest, which Alice had deemed to be too big a risk. Too dark, too many potential ambushes, too easy to get lost. Instead, they'd had to follow a road that seemed to stretch around half the island.

It'd been a several-hour hike, and Alice felt like she was ready to collapse from exhaustion. She'd kept herself hydrated, of course, going through most of a water bottle. It'd just be embarrassing to be incapacitated by something as trivial as dehydration when there were so many other exciting ways to die.

Still, Alice had never been one for physical exertion, finding the controlled climate of her room and the warm glow of her computer screen much more welcoming. It was funny, the little things you missed when thrown into a life or death situation. Alice idly wondered if her sister had been remembering to feed Tesla.

That part of my life is over, now. If I keep dwelling on it, I'm not gonna last long.

Only trust your friends, only care about your friends. Everyone else had to become a statistic. Only one person was making it out alive, and if Alice cried for every fallen student along the way, she'd break within a day. No one mattered except for Alice and the people she cared for.

Thus was her new reality.

Alice had sighed with relief as her group approached what appeared to be a strip of stores north of the actual living space. She paused outside of the entrance to what appeared to be a convenience store, catching her breath. She examined the store for a minute, then turned to Casey and Carlos.

"Could be supplies in there, if no one else beat us to them. Place looks locked up, but shouldn't be too hard to smash in a window. No one left to care, anyway. Think we should gather as much as we can before we move on to the power plant proper. Sound good?"

((Casey Malkovich continued from Where the Fuck is Here?))

Shit, physical exertion was a lot worse than Casey remembered it being.

Now granted, she had never exactly been one to run three miles a day or lift weights, but Casey had always figured that she was decently in-shape. It wasn't as if she had ever had major problems in gym class or anything like that. However, this was too long of a hike. Casey wasn't even able to hide her heavy breathing, and there was an awful sharpness in her chest. But like hell she was going to ask to take breaks when Alice and Carlos were still going. Even though Alice looked as bad as Casey probably did, the other girl was keeping it together.

But it seemed that they had at last found their primary destination. Casey took a grateful swing of water, but even that didn't do too much to relieve the burning sensation in her throat. Well, at least they had walked the road, instead of the uneven and dangerous ground of the forest. And honestly, the dark trees there kind of creeped her out. With their situation, it would probably be better to start in a less foreboding area.

Yeah. Catch your bearings. On the hike, Casey had begun to compile a list of what they would need to survive here. She didn't know how much of that she would find here, but there seemed to be a lot of stores in this new area. If they were lucky, then perhaps there would be a good amount of provisions to scavenge. "Luck" wasn't exactly something Casey was ready to assume they had going to them, but who knew what would happen from here on out?

Uncertainty; now there was a new one. It was weird for Casey to think longingly of school, her boring old routine. Of going home and chatting on her roleplay site, working on her new projects after the East Coasters-a group that make up a lot of her friends- had already left for the night.

No, don't think about that.

Instead, Casey focused on Alice's words. She picked up what seemed to be a rock heavy enough to help them break in. "Sounds good to me. We're here pretty early, so maybe we'll get some untouched loot. It'll probably be best if we don't spilt up into different buildings, huh?" Casey pointed to one of the stores. "How about that one first?"

"I'll...see you guys."

Upon saying this, Joseph left the store to look for things that may aid him in not dying. He had left his textbook at the store, so that he would be able to carry more in his duffel bag. As he was walking through the streets, he began to wonder about his "game plan", per se. He paid little attention to the fact that he and almost all of his classmates would most likely die, as it was only going to terrify him and make that chance all the more certain. "I....if I'm going to live, I'll need to kill somebody." He shuddered at the thought. "Unless....unless I get rescued." That wasn't out of the equation, right? A more cynical part of his mind answered. Come on, Joseph. Survival of the Fittest was declared dead two years ago. The government probably won't even know what's going on until it gets streamed. By then, you'll all be dead except for one "lucky" person. Make sure that it'll be you. As much as he hated to admit it, killing someone was almost certain. I....won't kill anyone, not...for no reason. That's.....unthinkable! No...Joseph, there are other students not as intelligent as you. They will be the ones to attack, not you. You'll only need to kill out of self defense or necessity. He sat down by the wall of what appeared to be a gym of sorts almost unconsciously, as he was immersed in thought.

He took a breath, and began thinking about what he'd need to do.

There are bound to be people out there killing for notoriety, right? That's a horrible plan. It will only make you a target. No....just, avoid being on the announcements, killer or victim, and you'll turn out okay. You can't be hunted if nobody knows you exist, after all. If....no, when....you wind up on the final few......hide. Make sure that you'll only need to kill one person. The last person. His mind was really in no nonsense mode today, almost on an autopilot of sorts, only thinking about survival. You keep talking about killing, Joseph. Put a stop to it. Why....why would they make it a rule, anyway? That you have to kill someone to go home.. if you can really get through THIS alive without killing anyone, then that just proves how good you are. Well, I suppose that if you kidnap high school students and put them on an island to kill each other for a living, then you probably don't have much rationality to your thinking. Which...reminds me. Joseph then took on a darker expression, thinking to himself. Don't lose it, Joseph. Don't lose your mind. Don't lose your mind, because if you lose your mind, you lose your life. And then you die. The boy who had won before, that....Dodd, person, didn't lose his mind. He....he must've had a mind of steel, then. Slowly hearing your classmates dying every day, and then seeing them dying? The people you grew up with, all dead but you. A social outcast, forever...... and that's the best case.

With that being thought, he stood back up, quivering. I....won't be like the others. I won't let this place change me. If I die, I'll die as myself. Jessica and Logan are waiting. I'd better oblige their expectations.

He then walked into the gym through the front door, albeit slowly, looking for anything of use. He began examining the gym, anything to get his mind off of his previous thoughts.

The gym was in remarkable shape. The machines were rather dusty, but nothing was strewn about. It didn't smell of much, due to the fact that very few organic things were in the gym. It didn't look too far away from the convenience store, so he figured that he could pretty much just take anything he wanted from there and bring it to the defenses. At first, he began grabbing the large metal bars for the weights. These should make for decent weapons, he thought. He didn't dare venture past the strip, for fear that Theodore or god knows who else could be wandering about. Who was to say that several people weren't dead before he even woke up?

So, throughout the course of forty minutes or so, he carried out a majority of the (few remaining) weight bars from the gym along with a few other things, and made a quick search of the pub and grocery store as well, periodically informing the duo of Jessica and Logan about what he'd found, and stopping more and more frequently for rests. He was large, but only so much of him was muscle.

Once he was done with his search, he went to the back door and knocked. Sweating and tired, he had hoped to do little of the work, at least until he had a few minutes to rest..

"Do.....do you have....something to prop the door open with? There's...a rather, large, quantity of items I've gathered."

(Carlos Lazaro continued from Where the Fuck is Here? )

If Alice and Casey were beat, Carlos was damn near pummeled to dust.

The barest signs of muscle aside, Carlos was lanky as fuck, especially in his arms and his legs. Still, he was better off than Casey and Alice who looked even bone skinny than he did. The problem was that he lacked endurance. Carlos could blame that on his hours sitting in front of a computer screen.

Carlos never really thought much of exercising. He figured that he looked fine enough. At worst, he was a skinny dude who would never run a marathon in his life. At best, there was always that occasional moment at work where he hoped that the cute girl standing in his line was actually looking at him instead of the cigarette closet directly behind him. It was almost always the cigarettes, but hey, a guy can get his hopes up, can't he?

So, yeah, he didn't think much of the trek. Alice had shown them where the plant was on her map and it didn't seem all that excruciating. And Carlos didn't think much of it either, until they were at the halfway point, and he noticed that he was falling behind Casey. Casey Malkovich, the skinny girl wearing an outfit that looked heavier than she herself did. He wasn't exactly embarrassed but... yeah. A bit annoying all the same.

He was still beat when they finally reached The Strip. Carlos had neglected to drink any water during his trip, a stupid decision on his part. Carlos quickly stopped for a second to shrug his bag off of his shoulder, unzipping it quickly. He pulled out a bottle of water and was about to zip the bag up when he realized... he forgot to take his pills.

Finding his pill bottle proved to be a lot harder than simply unzipping the bag. He had to find his other bag, the one he actually brought, and find it at the bottom of that bag. He found it though, and smiled to himself.

And in that brief instant, Carlos noticed some movement. He looked up to find... nothing. At all. It was just his imagination, he figured. Yeah. The place looked dead... Dead.

"Creepy-ass town," he mumbled. "Creepy-ass island."

Once he finally caught up with the others, Alice was talking about searching for supplies. It was a sound idea. The convenience store seemed the logical place to head first, but when he saw Casey reaching for a rock, he stopped her.

"Hold on," Carlos said. "I'll see what I can do."

And then he smirked to himself and whipped the pull-saw from the loop in his belt. He spun it once in his hand and made his way towards the door. Carlos reached the glass door, lifting his hand up -

- before realizing his idea was incredibly stupid and would most likely butcher his hand.

Carlos lowered his hand, feeling rather stupid. He was about ready to turn around and tell Casey to throw her rock when he noticed something odd. Carlos put his head to the glass with his eyes in a squint. The glass wasn't old, but it was stained enough that seeing through it proved a bit of challenge. He could make something out though.

Or, rather, making out nothing at all. Things were propped up against door (the shelves, though Carlos couldn't wasn't 100%), making it impossible for him to see anything. He paced back and forth along the front of the store to no avail. He even jumped, hoping to be able to see something over the blockade. There was the faintest glimpse of the inside but it was impossible to see.

"Son of a bitch," Carlos spat.

Carlos went from smug to annoyed in five seconds flat. The pills weren't kicking in yet. He turned around and walked back.

"Don't think we'll be getting in through here," he said. He gestured to the door with a sneer. "Door isn't just locked - it's blocked off to hell and high water!"

Jessica cracked the door open just a bit to see Joseph yet again. This was the... she wasn't sure exactly how many times he had popped back now, but given his return trips, she could rest assured that Theo had completely left the area and didn't intend on going whacko on anybody. She hoped.

"So, what exactly do you have for us?" She paused, and felt like asking the question that was actually a little further towards the front of her mind. "And geez, how MUCH did you bring?" She dared to poke her head out for a bit past Joseph, then pulled it in. She felt like a frightful bird too afraid to leave the safety of her birdhouse, lest a snake spot her and get to her before she could take flight.

"Okay, that's a lot of stuff. Um..." Turning to her left, Jessica reached to take one of the bottles of chemicals off of the shelf and use it to prop the door. It was one of the bottles with the label work away by one method or another, but it was no doubt some chemical cleaner or degreaser. She wasn't sure what else would be in a place like this. "Just be sure to bring it in and find a place out of the way to put it."

She opened the door back to the store front and stepped through. She was just in the process of saying something to Logan when...

"... Do you hear that? Sounds like somebody talking... outside?"

Oh fuck.

"JOSEPH!" Jessica half-yelled, half-snapped. "Come in and shut the door behind you!"

Logan helped Joseph carry in several of the items he'd managed to procure. Logan had to admit it was an impressive haul. What exactly they were going to do with everything, he wasn't sure. But they had a lot of it, whatever they decided to do.

"Pretty impressive," Logan said voicing his earlier thoughts. "I officially appoint you procurer of all items." He stepped back trying to decide where they were going to put everything. And everything needed a place. He supposed that they could add some of the heavier items to their barricade.

Logan was so focused on the mental organization that he jumped when Jessica yelled at Joseph to close the door.

"What's wrong," he asked making his way towards her. He looked past her to see that there seemed to people outside. Wonderful, he thought, just what we need more crazies. I guess this is our chance to see whether or defenses are any good.

"Who's out there? Can you see," Logan asked approaching the front of the store. He moved to one side of the window and, cupping his hands around his eyes, leaned towards the window to look out.

Nothing's ever simple, is it?

Alice frowned, putting her head to the glass to confirm what the incredibly irate Carlos had said. The door was, indeed, barricaded, strongly enough that Casey's rock and Carlos's saw wouldn't have much of an effect. "Damn." Alice sighed, stepping back away from the door. "Guess the owners really didn't want anyone getting in while they were away. Bit excessive."

This put a rather inconvenient damper on their plans. Alice had no doubt that, with time, they'd be able to break through, but it would take much more time than she had anticipated. Time better spent finding and securing an area to stay the night, time that could very well get them caught out in the open, defenseless.

They still hadn't exhausted all their options, however. Most buildings had more than one entrance, after all. Alice adjusted her glasses. "We should look for another way in. Windows, back door, whatever. Don't wanna leave empty handed if we don't have to."

Alice froze as she heard a girl yelling to someone from inside the store. That explained the barricades, at least. She quickly crouched by the corner of the building, beckoning Carlos and Casey to join her. Best to stay out of sight until they figured out their plan.

"Should we just make a break for it?" Alice whispered, glancing around to make sure that no one was approaching. "Supplies aren't worth confrontation."

Casey was about to start breaking things before Carlos stopped her. As he approached the building, she really didn't know what the guy was planning. It looked like he was going to use the saw to break in, but wouldn't that...hurt? Casey was about to yell for him to stop, throat still raw as bloody meat, before Carlos apparently re-thought the plan. That was probably for the best. She didn't want to deal with blood and broken glass already, and hell, Casey didn't want to see Alice or Carlos get hurt.

Fuck, her remaining lifespan was going to be like five fucking minutes if she didn't shape up.

Trying not to think about her impending demise, Casey walked up to examine the barricade or whatever that was. The rock was still in hand, but her arms were now crossed as she tried to deal with the problem in front of them.

"Damn, things can't ever be easy, can they?" She hissed. Breaking into this place was going to take more effort than expected, and effort wasn't exactly Casey's thing. If she didn't enjoy something or get it right away, then as far as she was concerned, doing it was too much of a bother. That was possibly a mindset that needed adjusting in this new situation.

At any rate, Alice's suggestion seemed to be best. If there was another way in, they could easily plunder whatever was hidden inside. And there had to be something good in there, or what was the point of the barricade-thing?

"Yeah, I'll go around and check it o-" And oh shit, it seemed like the fortifications suddenly made a whole lot more sense. Somebody was there and, more importantly, they knew that they were not alone. On instinct, Casey crouched down at the sound of the girl's yell. From that position, she quickly joined Alice in the corner.

The other girl had a point. There wasn't a supply in the world that was worth picking a fight with another group, especially since they had basically nothing (she really needed to check her bag at some point). But at the same time, maybe running wasn't the best option either, as much as 'flee from everything that looks like an issue' was Casey's original goal.

"If we book it, we might look like we were planning bad shit." Casey's eyes were fixed on the building. "And we leave our backs exposed, which isn't much good if these guys are panicky and happen to have something with a trigger. I say we make it clear we're all reasonable people here. It's gotta be too early for them to have completely lost it, right?"

She scotched away from Alice and held her hat up like a flag. "Hey! It's Casey, Casey Malkovich! I don't mean any harm, alright?"

Sometimes in life, there are choices to make. This was not one of those times. With the amount of urgency in Jessica's voice, he could only assume that there was trouble coming his way, and fast. Without hesitation, he jumped into the store, wasting no time in closing the door behind him and crouching down. He did not feel like taking chances with his life on the line. As he was doing so, he had heard the voice of a classmate, identifying themselves as Casey Malkovich.

Ah yes, Casey. He knew about her enough to know that she wasn't some unintelligent jerk who'd try to attack him, nor was she physically intimidating, either. Based on this, her claim that she wasn't going to harm anyone was most likely legitimate.

Nor was he planning on harming anyone either, especially with his "weapon". His textbook was useful, but just not in a combative way. Even IF he had a useful weapon, he would only take it out if he felt threatened, telling them to leave first.

The only thing that bothered him was that the people she could be with may not share the same characteristics. With that being said, he began speaking to no one in particular about their next course of action.

"Do.... you think that they're dangerous? Because.....if not, they could prove to be.....rather....valuable. More likely than not, they're sane. Besides.....we need all the people we can get. Though.....this is just my opinion. "

You were always good with strategizing, Joseph. Good thing, too, because this is when you'll need it the most. 6 people is better than 3, after all. What other choice do you have?

Carlos gave Casey the look. The look that said "what the hell are you doing Casey?" in all-caps. A look that Casey wasn't going to see.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with booking it. It wasn't cowardly at all! What if there were crazy conspiracy nuts held up in the convenience store and thought Alice, Carlos and Casey were the reptilians? There was no way of telling that! Someone was screaming at the very least but he couldn't make heads or tells what they were screaming about. He would hazard to guess they were yelling about 'them', Casey, Alice and himself. That alone made Carlos weary.

That did not appear to be the case for Casey. She didn't appear to be concerned so far as Carlos could observe. He had to hand it to her, she was probably a lot more optimistic than he was. He still thought it was a dumb move.

Then again Carlos did nothing to really stop Casey so it wasn't like he had any say in the matter. Back in school it would have been pretty easy for him to get upset, but he managed to show some restraint. Besides, Casey went ahead and announced her presence anyway so fat chance of them making a quick getaway.

It occurred to Carlos that he could have introduced himself as well, since Casey had gone ahead. He thought better of it. His reputation was pretty shitty back home, and he had no idea who the hell was in the convenience store. It could be anyone! So he sat back with his arms crossed, huddling over the corner with Alice as Casey waved her hat around.

"Do you really think this is a good idea?" Carlos asked Alice in a semi-whine. "They barricaded the frig out of the front, yeah? You saw it for yourself. Not a great first impression if you ask me."

They were already locked in a box four strong, with just enough supplies stretched across them to maybe stick it out for a couple of days, and more people were showing up and trying to get in on the goods?

Yeah. Okay.

Jessica pressed against a wall close to the door, up as far as the barricade would let her be. She heard the muffled voice of a girl identify herself as Casey, who was... who else? A girl from school. Of course she was from school. They were ALL from fucking school. It shouldn't have come as a surprise at this point, but each person that made themselves known to Jessica was just increasing the scale of the problem in her head, scratching another nerve. To go from dealing with these guys in math class and gym class and through petty rumors or talking about the latest fashion or music craze to having to play fucking warfare was a transition almost... surreal.

Yet, here they were.

Joseph tried to add his advice. He meant well, Jessica supposed, and she could somewhat trust him or at least disregard him as a threat... no, she COULDN'T do that. But she didn't have to be super nervous around him and treat him like a liability. Yet. What he was saying at the moment, however, simply wasn't helping her think.

"Joseph, shut up," Jessica said flatly while keeping her ear pressed to the wall. It was a little silly, doing that. Pressing her ear to the wall of the store was likely doing very little in actually helping her hear what was going on outside, so she heard nothing beyond Casey simply calling to whomever she presumed to be inside. Jessica wasn't looking through the glass doors either (and they were pretty much entirely blocked off by shelves, making that hard in the first place), so she couldn't even see if Casey was still there.

Smart money bets yes.

"Alright guys," Jessica called out with a raised voice, "This is Jessica Sanders. Maybe you've heard of me!" Her cheap attempt at a joke failed to make even herself smile. "We've got, like... three, four people in here. We kinda want to keep it that way. We're just holding out, so could you... go somewhere else?"

Logan glanced over his shoulder at Joseph. He really couldn't mean that. Logan wasn't an expert on these things, but he knew that just because someone said they weren't going to hurt you, wasn't cause to trust them.

"The more people we bring in the more people we have to feed, the fewer rations we get. We also increase the risk of getting someone like Theo showing up again. And I'd rather it just be the three of us, then have to worry about someone sneaking up and killing me while I'm in the bathroom. That'd just be an embarrassing way to die," Logan explained keeping his voice low.

He turned his attention back towards the trio outside that just seemed to be standing around idly. They're never going to get anything accomplished if they just sit around waiting for others to make decisions for them. He thought and then frowned. The group standing around was good, although leaving would be the best. At least, for now, they weren't trying to come in.

"Well, said my little maple leaf," he said nodding when Jessica decided to answer the group. "That will surely scare them away.

What the hell was Casey thinking?

Not wanting to leave your back exposed was admirable, but the way you accomplished that was by making a break for it before the others got organized and went after you, not by loudly announcing your presence, allowing them to pinpoint your location!

Alice also highly doubted the truth of Casey's final statement. There was always some idiotic waste of space that immediately jumped to the conclusion that violence was the best and only answer. It's what the terrorists were banking on, after all. All it took was a few panicked, paranoid students to murder a fellow student, which lead to even more students mudering, and so on. A vicious cycle that only one lucky killer would escape from.

As it was, there was no guarantee that the inhabitants of the convenience store hadn't already decided to shoot at anyone who got too close to their base. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done, and all Alice could do was scowl at Casey and shake her head at Carlos.

"Not a good idea. Not close to a good idea." Before she could say any more, she was interrupted by a voice coming from inside the store. Jessica Sanders. No one Alice knew very well, no one Alice cared about. No reason not to listen to her. Luckily for Casey, Jessica was reasonable. The missed supplies would hurt, but a bullet or stab wound would hurt even more.

Alice turned to Casey and Carlos. "You heard her. Need to get out of here, find a place to settle down. Getting late." If they waited too long, they'd end up having to explore the nuclear plant in the dark, and there was no way that could end well.

Casey didn't' realize the damage she'd done until well after she had spoken. There was danger on this island, she knew that, but there was no way that the majority of the students had completely lost it so easily, right? Casey wasn''t exactly a shining example of mental health herself, and she had yet to rip out some kid's heart with her teeth. Besides, they knew that there were multiple people inside the building, and while it was possible that one psycho could be hiding in there, wouldn''t two or more psychos have tried to kill each other by now or something? She feared panic from them, shots fired at unknown silhouettes, but not an outright attack on an established non-threat.

It wasn't until after Jessica Sanders had spoken that Casey allowed herself to turn back to her group, and therefore it wasn't until then that she saw their faces.

Oh.

Oh. She fucked up.

So alright, the group in the building was a defensive collation, like she figured they would probably be. Jessica seemed decent-minded enough, and the others with her would probably be the same way. As long as Casey and the rest left now, there most likely would not be any form of retaliation.

But that wasn't't the issue, was it? There had been a possibly that things would have turned out differently, and Casey had put Alice and Carlos' lives at risk without even speaking to them about it first. No matter how certain she was that speaking out was the correct choice, she could never have been certain enough to take that risk for them.

Back at school, Casey didn't make boneheaded decisions. Well, okay, she did, but she never really had to take responsibility for them. She could stay up to 3am talking to people on the internet and still ace her physics exam the next day. Her parents were always overly forgiving of her, and it wasn't as if she was out drinking or doing drugs anyway. Things had just...never turned out horribly wrong for her before.

It was a stab of panic to understand that things would turn out horribly wrong for her here. And another to understand that things would turn out horribly wrong for the people she was with.

Well, apologizing wasn't't going to solve anything, and Casey was too scared about how Alice and Carlos would respond to do so anyway. So, until they brought it up, maybe it was better just to...not mention it.

God, she was a fucking coward.

"Yeah, we'd be best off finding shelter before night falls." Casey agreed with Alice, glad to have a point of conversation other than her screw-ups. "Don't want to cause these guys any more trouble, anyway."

Joseph had never really considered the possibility of running out of food. Though, it would make sense, seeing as how the terrorists wouldn't want this sick game to drag on for TOO long. Combined with the fact that neither Logan or Jessica seemed to agree with him, it was a safe bet that this group was going to stay at 3. "I suppose it's for the best"...he thought to himself. "Larger groups are less stable."

He turned to Logan. "You're right. What was I thinking? I'll....tell them to leave, now." He had said this almost apologetically.

With that settled, he speed walked to the entrance.

There appeared to be 3 people, though it was hard to see due to the barricade. Jessica had told him to shut up, though he didn't take it personally. Would telling them to leave be redundant at this point? He had wanted to drive the point home, so he figured that he should voice his opinion, too.

He began speaking, in a sophisticated manner with the lowest voice he could safely muster, though not so low as to be unbelievable.

"I'm....sure that you are all nice people, but it would be preferable that you leave, now. It's.....nothing personal, really."

He knew that they would likely leave already, but what he said couldn't have hurt.
