North Side

Chattanooga's historic northern district, which has experienced a revival of activity in the last decade thanks to refurbishing of its older buildings and the establishment of trendy shops and restaurants along its main road. Those who wish to get away from the more tourist-oriented parts of downtown can shop and relax here.

  • Amatore's Bar and Grille
Amatore's boasts a reputation for being one of the best dining experiences on Chattanooga's north side, as well as one of the most expensive. After moving from its original downtown location around ten years ago to occupy one of the refurbished buildings in the north side's shopping area, Amatore's has become a stock location for dates and celebratory dinners with its fully-stocked wine bar (available only to those 21 and over, of course), Italian-French fusion cuisine, and its elegant outdoor dining areas. Amatore's maintains rather strict security and has tossed out trouble-makers on more than one occasion, but the staff is always courteous and accommodating to those who behave themselves.

  • 34th Street
Named for the original small lane at its center, though it has gradually expanded to encompass several side streets as well, the shopping strip on 34th Street is a center of activity for patrons of smaller, privately-owned shops and boutiques. Notable locations include a bookstore, an antiques shop, and an eclectic Wicca-based store specializing in crystals, Tarot cards, and other odds and ends. Along the rest of the strip lie various clothing and jewelry boutiques, and food trucks are known to frequent the area to cater to those looking for a bite to eat while they shop.

  • Off The Record
Off The Record is an institution in the Chattanooga music scene. Opening in February of 1970 after Janie and Bill Mitchell had been to Woodstock the previous year, it has been going strong ever since. Originally stocking only vinyls, Bill showed good business acumen in quickly embracing new formats while strategically selling off any rare or out of print records they happened to have. This meant that by the time of his passing in the winter of 1990, the store had a good reserve of money to fall back on. Following Bill's death, Janie passed ownership of the shop over to their daughter Spring and while she doesn't possess the raw business skills of Bill, she's shown to be gifted at predicting trends in music and stocking the shop accordingly. The shop is still nearly identical to how it was when it first opened with aisles all arranged by genre, a special recommendations shelf and a space for new releases. The main difference is that they bought the offices that used to reside above them to serve as a second floor. Janie can still be found sitting behind the till while Spring is normally found moving around the shop floor helping people and giving recommendations.

  • The Blue House Cafe and Diner
The Blue House is half cafe, half diner but all relaxed atmosphere. Originally a Jazz bar, it was bought out in 2010 and renovated to become more of a hotspot for the younger population of Chattanooga. The cafe serves a large variety of fair trade and sustainably sourced coffee while the diner serves a variety of specialty burgers along with vegetarian and vegan options. The main attraction of the Blue House - besides the free wifi - is that it routinely hosts special sets from bands that range from short appearances of one or two songs to a full acoustic performance.
