A tourist hotspot, the western beach has seen its fair share of actionand not without reason, either. Between the romance of the lagoon and the dangerous allure of the roped-off caves dotting the area, its understandable why so many would flock to the location, although rumors of people disappearing in the caves managed to dissuade just as many from it.
Spotting the beach in a series are deep, roped-off caves, some traversable on foot and others requiring strong swimming skills or the aid of a canoe. Any light source aside from natural pockets in the rock went out years ago, however, making it very easy for someone to lose their way in the craggy labyrinth, not to mention the threat of slipping into the deep, black water.
A ways down from the main beach is the rusted remains of a large modern day freighter, lore suggesting it was downed by the joint efforts of a bad storm and a drunken captain. Although heavily rusted, its still accessible and could be a decent place to wait out a storm.
Shelsons Beach, as the faded sandstone sign denotes, looks straight out of a postcard. With its sparkling blue waters and expansive white sand beach, its no wonder vacationers flocked to the location. There are several paved dog trails around the area, as well as a small gravel parking lot situated on a hill by the entrance, with only a single metal food truck in its confines.
Fed via the ocean and protected by small, moss-covered cliffs and tropical undergrowth, the inland lagoon, with its deep crystal clear waters, is both beautiful and dangerous. Unless one knows exactly what theyre looking for, its very possible to simply fall right into if youre approaching it from the cliff-side.
